Rositta, people like us don't necessarily have to be dumb to not know something. 😉 Stereotypes and prejudices can be regional, what can pass unnoticed in one country or area can be completely offensive in another. That's why there's diplomats. 😉

@Karyn, I agree. He was either very stupid or he knew exactly what he was doing. Either way, he should not be in office.

Hey Anderson and Erica...and the rest of the show....I think Bush started something that will never end. We took the only man that had any control in Iraq out...now there is no one over there that can keep that country in check. As soon as we pull out the terrorist groups will take over...and kill everyone that favored the US...I'm all for bringing the troops home...because we shouldn't have drew first blood in the first place...but I fear that we will have to go back....

How can you live in America (long enough to become Mayor) and not be aware of the sterotype associated with watermelons and African Americans? Give me a break !!!

no wonder why the us is not into helping people get higher education so poor and uneducated people can still vote for republicans to their own detriment and the worse of all they do not know that..

America has its first black President. Were there any Americans that honestly expected not to hear and see slanderous images, remarks, jokes, and stories relating to any stereotype there may actually be regarding black people in general? Dead monkeys shot by police and watermelon lawns are just a couple of many. America must conquer racism by ignoring our differences and seeing people for their true greatness.

The Mayor who sent the "Whitehouse/Watermelon" email should be fired, and not solely because of the blatantly racist content of his correspondence; but because he was too stupid to come up with a more believable excuse for his actions.

Oh Anderson, you are so dear...ou just cannot let that go, can you? Your competetiveness is showing again. LOL.

Don't overthink! Every time that I do that it ends in disaster.

PS: You are FAR from stupid!

Have fun tomorrow! Lighten up. Ha! J/k

    Goodnight all.

Now Anderson your facial expressions said it correctly. For a mayor of a city in the US not to know that to reference watermelons on the White House lawn would be considered racist is totally unacceptable. To say he didn't realize this is totally unbelievable

It is a disgrace for anyone to disrepect our president with a cartoon such as this. Sadly, this supposed leader is being a bad example for present and future generations.

While we debate over budget dollars, we should put into perspective the comparatively trivial nature of it when compared to the violence in Mexico and in the American southwest.

Unlike someone else who commented, I do care because I know some good people in Mexico and they want to live lives of peace and tranquility just like everyone else.

Well you almost redeemed yourself! 🙂 So close! If it helps, I was guessing that the Trump had never used a public bathroom too! I did like the cocky look on your face after the President question! 🙂

10 pm already? Have a great night Anderson, Erica, Chris, Megan, Esma, Vanessa and all my fellow evening conversationalists! Have a great night and a fabulous Friday!

Ha! Another Kelly RIpa / Anderson Cooper quiz competition! I can't believe Anderson missed the last question....Rosie O'Donnell? Looks like Anderson is still the underdog.....

Have a great evening. Nite all!

    Anderson,
I am a proud 62 year old black patroit...served my country in Vietnam...my point is i paid my dues..

Idiots such as the CA mayor who sent the watermelon email of the Whitehouse lawn should have had to walk in my boots, and he would understand some things...

That CA mayor is full of crap. If he didn't know the stereotype about watermelons then that picture wouldn't have made any sense! He must have had a great big chuckle about it that he did a mass mailing. To lie and say he had no idea is just insulting. It's bad enough that you're racist, don't go lying to our faces to cover your rear.

  30. Michelle Reno,NV

The California mayor must think we are all Black History dumb lol.
If he did not know that watermelon was a racial typical vice than why did he use watermelon, and not lemons or pumpkins and/or any food from the five food groups? He needs to be firmly verbally chastised and spend a semester or two in a Black history class or maybe just ask someone Black about his racial thoughts that now speak loudly

I believe that CNN would be doing us all a great service if they were to do an indepth report on the state of the country's infrastructure as well as the health service and the schools, since so much of the money from the recovery package is being chanelled in these areas.

Re: this cartoonist who claims he was unaware watermelons might be indicative of some sort of racial slur, I'd like him escorted off the planet. Failing that, I hope he earns over $250,000. a year.

Whoa! Wait . . . . Really Anderson?! Watermelon patch on the Front Lawn? “. . . Had no idea . . .?” And this was from the mayor of Los Alamitos, California? No . . . this is just too sad. Sometimes I’m just flat out embarrassed to say I’m an American.

    February 26, 2009 at 10:57 pm |
  38. Gloria Handley

The Major from California felt it was okay to post the White House picture with the watermelons online because he knew it wouldn't get much coverage from the national media, based on the limited amount of coverage that was given to the cartoon with the police shooting the monkey. As Eric Holder said, "we are a nation of cowards," when it comes to discussing race relations.

The mayor in California was well aware of the message that such an image would send. What's really embarrassing is that he expects the public, as well as the President for that matter, to believe that it was unintentional and harmless. I know who won't be getting re-elected 😉
