That's the funny thing about our freedoms. There are no laws against what this woman has done. However despicable it may seem, she has the right to have as many children as she wants. The doctor is not in the business of ethics in this either. However, we do have child care laws that can take those children away and give them to homes that won't try to exploit them.

@JoAnn, why should we care about the GOPs, other than the three who put the american people ahead of the nex election, since they’ve proven they couldn’t care less about anyone but themselves?

You could say the exact same thing about the House Dems who loaded the bill with pet projects without caring what it did to the chances of passing it. Pelosi is the biggest problem in DC right now for bipartisan action.

If you love children so much then ADOPT. That way with the regulations you can make your life better while making another person's life better.

    anderson,

i agree. what this doctor did was totally unethical, he has no clue what kind of care these children are going to get. i wonder if IVF was the only way she could conceive? i heard that was how she became pregnant with the first 6 children as well. very concerned about those babies.

I predict Octo-mom's publicist will drop her soon. The only people interested in Octo-mom will be tabloids and they won't have to pay big money .... Her story won't be really ripe until about 5-7 years from now when what she's done has really sunk in.

That mom does not have her kids' best interest in mind. It is her own fame and glory. Unfortunately with us discussing it we are giving her what she wants. We have 3 children two incomes and it still is a struggle to provide what they need. What was that doctor thinking.

    Goodnight everyone! Be safe!

The mom is mentally unstable! By virtue of being born in the U.S., these kids are U.S. citizens. It is our responsibility to look out for their best interest and their best interest is NOT to allow them to be in the custody of a mentally sick and disabled person., even if it happens to be their mother.

    February 10, 2009 at 10:56 pm |
  26. Mike, Syracuse NY

Octo-mom is just an extreme case of people who have children they can't afford then expect the rest of us support them. Maybe some of the stimulus should pay to have welfare recipients 'fixed' after 2 kids.

I think Anderson's question is very valid. Social, emotional and financial situations should be taken into consideration for the implantation of fetuses. They are when a person/couple is trying to adopt a child. The standards should be equal.

I dont think that its a matter of who gets tax breaks. People need to do their fair share. Im just sick and tired of people getting free rides from tax dollars no matter what class of wealth you are considered.

"This octuplet thing is ridiculous if a woman is on welfare there is no way she should be allowed to be implanted with embryos or fertility drugs."

what disabilities do the older children suffer from? are the disabilities a result of her being fertilazed with multiples?

That medical ethicist (sorry, missed his name) couldn't have said it better. That doctor had a very obvious ethical duty and he flagrantly disregarded it.

Hi Anderson, Randy K., crew and bloggers!

Thank you Gary Tuckman for the fire story from Austrailia...truly a nightmare...genuinely hope the arsonists are caught and prosecuted! (The picture of the Koala bear is pricesless and telling).

The story on the octuplets is outrageous. I am a single parent and know how very difficult it is to afford and raise children alone. This woman should never have been allowed to have this many children! I think it is not unreasonable to assume that she expected the have the story picked up so she would get help from individuals and companys of baby products to totally support her and her many children.

The eithics of this story need to be examined at many levels!

Doctors make decisions like this all the time. For instance in sex reassignment cases. They don't just give it to them because they want it.

14children??? Why is this story so big? I don't understand how this mother can have this all over the news. We already have enough unwed mothers in the world.

Doctors in our conservative community already make health decsions based on the financial costs to the community. They avoid diagnosing chronic health problems to prevent local school from having to provide resources and support to students with special needs.

This is an extension of the very same conversation...who has the right to assume that Doctors are automatically ethical.
