Editor's Note: See Anderson's full interview with President Obama tonight on AC360° at 10PM ET.
Anderson Cooper
The Oval Office is smaller than I thought it would be. Maybe it’s just because it was filled with lights and some of the furniture was moved around for the cameras, but it was more intimate than I had imagined. I’d heard President Obama likes to keep the Oval Office warm, but I was still surprised to feel the heat emanating from the open door. Katie Couric was just finishing her interview when I got there, “Wow, it really is hot in there,” I mentioned to David Axelrod who was standing nearby. “They’ve actually cooled it down a bit,” he said.
I’d met then-candidate Obama a couple times over the course of the campaign. I moderated the YouTube debate that he took part in, and I spent a day with him on the campaign trail, but this was my first time talking with him as President. I never interviewed President Bush. I’m not sure if it was my coverage of Hurricane Katrina or what, but the Bush White House never seemed to respond to our requests for interviews. Go figure.
Today, like all the other network anchors, we were told we only had ten minutes to interview President Obama, so I stayed up late last night and spent most of today whittling down a long list of questions. I also consulted with a number of our great political correspondents to see if they had questions they would want asked. I went into the interview with eighteen questions written down, but the truth is once the conversation started I found myself asking things I hadn’t planned on, and ignoring other questions I was sure I was going to ask. I think the best interviews are genuine conversations, and with the President I tried to just listen, and then respond based on things he brought up. Sometimes I watch interviews on tv and I feel like the questioner has a list of topics to cover and is simply checking them off as they go along.
In addition to asking him about Tom Daschle, and the economic stimulus plan, I also wanted to hear him talk about some subjects he hasn’t discussed lately. I asked him what if anything keeps him up at night, and was surprised by his candid response, a response he actually came back to later in the interview to talk more about. It’s rare for a President to ever say he made a mistake. President Obama not only said that today, he said, “I screwed up” when talking about the Daschle nomination. That surprised me. Though it was clearly a tough day for him politically, the President, in person, is remarkably poised. “Cool” is the term often used, and it does apply. The other words I found myself thinking about to describe him were, “calm,” “sharp,” “on point.” He was dressed neatly, and his nails trimmed. I still occasionally bite my nails, and long-term nail-biters like me tend to notice when someone else doesn’t.
When you interview the President someone stands in your line of sight and gives you hand cues counting down the minutes. It can be distracting. At times as you are listening to the President respond, you want to ask him to hurry it up so you can get in a few more questions, but thankfully I resisted the impulse. At the end I wanted to make sure to save a few minutes to ask him some lighter more personal questions. I called it a lightning round, and he was nice to play along. I asked him about the dog search, what he likes most about his new high tech car, and whether or not he’s had a cigarette since becoming President. I think you will be interested to hear his answer to those and many other questions tonite on 360 at 10pm.

February 3rd, 2009 8:29 pm ET What would I prefer???? $20.00 a month in my paycheck... or my mortgage at 4%. Hummm Now that this option is voiced ...My hands are firmly in my pockets, waiting for a mortgage rate reduction. I do not think the economy will improve til we get this...No one will buy or refinance with this carrot pending!!!! Thats the way to get the housing market turned around!!! not more spending!!! |

February 3rd, 2009 8:29 pm ET Hi Anderson, I’m glad that you got to interview Pres. Obama after his first two weeks in office. I hope that this will be one of many, recurring interviews because he said that one of the keys to his success, especially in solving the economic crisis, is frequent and open communications by him and his administration. I’m also glad that you got to ask him lighter questions in the end. After all, he does have other things going on in his life besides leading the country. Sounds like you both had a great conversation. I look forward to seeing it tonight. Lilibeth |

February 3rd, 2009 8:35 pm ET I'm glad that President Obama is accepting interviews from all news networks. It shows us the American people that he is willing to actually talk to us and not down upon us. Thank you Anderson for interviewing him (your my favorite anchor!). Keep up the amazing work! |

February 3rd, 2009 8:35 pm ET Anderson, Looking forward to your full interview tonight. What I have seen has been very good. I too, was surprised by his candor, admitting he had made a mistake and that things kept him up at night. I think that makes him a lot more human. Congrats on your interview with President Obama. I imagine you are right that you didn't get an interview with President Bush because of your great, heartfelt coverage of Katrina. |

February 3rd, 2009 8:36 pm ET Fix housing. 4% mortgages for qualified borrowers. Americans will not return to spending while their home values erode. One foreclosure affects tens of homeowners. How can the sum total of political leadership in this country miss this? I campaigned for Obama. But the Republicans are way ahead on what is needed here. Take the $800 billion, guranantee mortgages and buy up forclosures holding them at a sale price that reflects good confidence in that neighborhood. That will get this economy back on track. And anything else you do that doesn't fix housing WILL NOT WORK. Paraphrasing Carville and at the risk of not seeing this post: it's the housing market, stupid. |

February 3rd, 2009 8:38 pm ET wow..the interview sounds really interesting and exciting ...it looks like you covered President Obama both politically and personally...and also...i do not think you missed out on anything for not interviewing Pres. Bush...there's was nothing positive you could talk about.... Regardless,.i am hoping, in the near future, i could hear about the issues of how our immigration problem could help our economic problem, Middle East Peace, College Education, and Health Care. always tuned in, Hana |

February 3rd, 2009 8:39 pm ET Goodness... how many people in Political Office pay their taxes? After three of Obama's selections for office, all three had a problem with their taxes. IRS should investigate the can of worms that has been opened. |

February 3rd, 2009 8:40 pm ET I am so sick and tired of the media and the other party attacking our president and his decisions for his cabinet picks. He chose and continues to choose "true america" to represent government. Okay there are those who failed to pay their taxes on time or whatever the media wants to call it. I say take every single person in Congress and the Senate and audit them and I guarantee you their are others who owe taxes as well. May them pay what's owed to the government and help to offset some of this debt. People in glass houses should not throw stones. Heck, I represent a true picture of America, I work every day, am barely keeping my d |

February 3rd, 2009 8:43 pm ET Thanks for the "behind-the-scenes" look! I'll be glue to the screen, and my laptop, for the interview at 10. (And glad you resisted the impulse to rush President Obama. Probably wouldn't have turned out well for you. |

February 3rd, 2009 8:44 pm ET Anderson from the bit of your interview I saw on The Situation Room I thought it turned out great, at least President Obama answers questions instead of answering them with a laugh or a smirk. Can't wait to see the entire interview tonight. |

February 3rd, 2009 8:46 pm ET Anderson Glad the interview went so well. I guess Bush never got back to you on an interview because of the "Keeping it Honest" theme of your show – he couldn't afford to let you come in! I was impressed by the clip you posted. I don't think I have ever heard a President say he was wrong or that he screwed up with no coercion behind it. Wish you had been able to have more than 10 minutes but I guess everyone wants to interview the President. He sounds like he lives up to his reputation the way you describe him – calm, poised, deliberate. I am looking forward to seeing your interview (I hope the whole thing) tonight. Should be a good show. Annie Kate |

February 3rd, 2009 8:49 pm ET Anderson, Looking forward to seeing the interview. I know it was tough asking the right questions with only a 10 minute time frame. I had trouble with a 15 minute limit when I interviewed the late John West who had been Ambassador to Saudi Arabia and S.C. governor years ago.I applauad your ability to always end up with the best interviews because of the type questions you ask. Keep up the great job. MJ from SC |

February 3rd, 2009 8:52 pm ET Anderson, I was hoping you'd blog some behind-the-scenes interview tidbits and I am not disappointed. I initially found your noticing of Obama's trimmed nails a little odd, but on second thought, there's something strangely comforting in knowing our president's calmness even extends to his nail care. Isn't it refreshing to have a leader own up to his mistakes with no hesitation? Quite the change from that other guy. I look forward to seeing the rest of the interview. |

February 3rd, 2009 8:53 pm ET Anderson, Well really what else is Obama going to say but that he was wrong about Daschle. I mean really. Plus that is nothing compared to a real major issue that Bush faced. Let's see if he still admits his mistakes when it really counts. Cindy..Ga. |

February 3rd, 2009 8:53 pm ET I am sick and tired of the media and the people in general trying to make our President and his decisons look bad. So what he chose people who had tax issues, they paid them and that is what matters. Should they had paid them before now, probably, but them paying their taxes has nothing to do with their ability to do the job. Suggestion, Mr. President, write and pass a bill tomorrow for every single Congressman/woman and Senator, to be audited for personal income taxes. I guarantee you, the government will find a whole bunch of overdue payments and penalities that will help offset some of the debt that we have. People in glass houses should not throw stones. Our President and First Family truly represent what America looks like and it's killing people so they are doing everything they can to try and discredit him. His choices just once again prove that people at all levels have problems. Heck, I'll work for Mr. President. No, I do not owe back taxes, but I have debt, am barely keeping my daughter in college, have another one to get in, and daily pray that I keep an income so that we don't end up out on the street. Does that make me a bad person or Mr. President wrong if he chose to give me a job under his administration. Open your eyes people, this is a "NEW" America. |

February 3rd, 2009 8:54 pm ET Thanks Anderson. I look forward to the interview. I agree with your observation concerning your interviewing style. February 3rd, 2009 9:03 pm ET Real discourse? Honest dialogue? A relationship where the press asks the tough questions and the President responds with pertinent answers? What a great beginning! It's hard to believe he has only been President for 14 days! |

February 3rd, 2009 9:15 pm ET My management professor asked me during class last week if I think Obama is charismatic. I had to be careful with my answer so as not to infer that he is only charismatic and little else because I don't believe that charisma is always a good thing. But in President Obama's case, I believe he embodies everything that an effective leader should be-and his charisma is...well... as we Cajuns call it "lagniappe." His sincerity and honesy have impressed me immensely. |

February 3rd, 2009 9:16 pm ET Obama is doing the 'I take the blame for my son having broken your window with a baseball'. That's about the seriousness of it. Let him say he made a mistake when its a national defense issue, something where people's lives are on the line. |

February 3rd, 2009 9:17 pm ET It doesn't surprise me, Anderson, that you got the chance to interview President Obama, or that you did so well, from what I hear. Your style, your honesty, and your gift of engaging an interviewee, asking just the right questions, has always been superior to the rest and right "on the money." It must have been an amazing experience for you! |

February 3rd, 2009 9:17 pm ET Anderson – Thanks for sharing the "behind the scences" of your Oval Office "experience." I have seen a bit of the interview on "The Situation Room" - and I'm looking forward to seeing the whole interview on 360 tonight. I loved the fact that he said, "I screwed up" - how many people are actually willing to admit that publicly, especially policitians? I like that you described your interview as more of a conversation - too often I feel that interviewers are not listening to responses, but rather worried about getting to the next question. I'm especially interested in what you referred to as the "lightening round" of questions. I think it's good to see the more personal side of our president. It helps us to remember that he's human. Apparently he really is "cool under pressure" as today could not have been a fun day for him – Good post - thanks for sharing your experience. Hope you got a souvenir photo, since it was your first visit to the Oval Office. |

February 3rd, 2009 9:19 pm ET Reading Anderson's blog I was expecting a political or news analysis of his interview with President Obama, but I have to say that I was delighted to read Anderson's more personal insights on the experience. There certainly can be too much of this kind of blogging. After all, the president is the news here, not Anderson Cooper. Yet in this case, I appreciated the opportunity to learn something about what it's like to sit down with a new president in the Oval Office and Anderson's impressions of the man himself. Thank you. |

February 3rd, 2009 9:21 pm ET Anderson, I must admit i did not vote for Obama. I disagree with his handling or his allowing the mishandling of the Pelosi/Reid stimulus bill. Its no stimulus its PORK if I've ever seen it. That having been said, his candor and honesty will go a long way with the American people. The fact that he will stand up and take the hit for his appointments and say hey "I messed up" shows a lot. To that, my hats off Mr. President...I wish you well..we are one America and I want you to succeed. If you succed we all do! Great Interview Anderson! |

February 3rd, 2009 9:27 pm ET I do not believe those who have lost their jobs recently, which caused their homes to go into foreclosure and now have to pull their child out of college, really care about a cabinet member tax problem. None of us are perfect by any means. |

February 3rd, 2009 9:29 pm ET I'm a journalist, too and I agree the best interviews are conversations. I rarely prepare notes – just let the questions flow back and forth based on the responses. (I probably would have made a few notes before going in to see Obama, though!) I hope Obama retains this openness with the media - and this candor. If Bush had said "I screwed up" 5-6 years ago, he might have left office with better feelings among the public. I like that Obama has returned to the old adage "The buck stops here." That makes him a good role model, regardless whether his decisions are successful or not. |

February 3rd, 2009 9:34 pm ET Cool can't wait to watch tonight. I wish you got to ask him how he feels about everybody attacking him for every little thing he does. Did you ask him if he thought about hiiring personal body guards to work with secret service to protect him and his family? |

February 3rd, 2009 9:41 pm ET Anderson, I could tell by your post today that you got caught up in the moment of being in the Oval Office. I think the fact that it is “oval” makes it seem cozy, but I don’t think I ever heard anyone comment on the temperature. Since you keep the 360 studio chilly, I am sure you felt a bit uncomfortable in its warmth. Like George W. Bush, Obama seems to prefer to be interviewed by journalists who have been favorable to him in the past, and who he feels will be less likely to challenge him. I was impressed with some of what I saw of your interview on TSR tonight, but I will reserve my final judgment until after it is aired in its entirety. I agree that although journalists come in with a list of questions, they should be flexible. However, based on what you said in your post this evening it sounds like Obama used his “lengthy” responses to limit the amount of questions you could ask and to direct you away from any controversial or “negative” topics and questions, keeping you focused on where he wanted to lead you. The time limits they placed on the interview and the “countdown” distractions also put you at a disadvantage. Given the state of the union and the short period of time you had, I was surprised to hear that you used the time to ask him “lighter” questions, but I guess it is what some people want to hear. I will be interested in watching your interview tonight. Jo Ann |

February 3rd, 2009 9:41 pm ET Well I guess if Obama thinks it's OK to keep the Oval Office so warm, then he won't dare ask Americans to lower their thermostats in the winter to "conserve" (Like he mentioned during the campaign). Just one more example of "Do as I say, not as I do" Democrat. |

February 3rd, 2009 9:42 pm ET What a fascinating inside look at interviewing the President. Extraordinary post; thanks Anderson. I totally agree with you that it should be a "conversation" and not just a rapid firing of questions. When folks have a genuine chance to converse, much is gleaned about the person involved. Good deal. All throughout the day, I was thinking of your interview and how horribly nervous I would be, should I be fortunate enough to be in your shoes. It surely would be an incredible experience, but "up late" would have been the least of it. There is no way I would have been able to sleep. At all. Anxiously awaiting tonight's program. February 3rd, 2009 9:51 pm ET Congratulations again on getting the interview! I'm sure you did a fantastic job and I can't wait to watch. I admire your approach and I have always enjoyed that your interviews sound like conversations. I also love reading your blog entries–it always reads like a friend wrote it. You strike a great balance between being casual and friendly while still sounding incredibly professional. I feel your pain about the nail-biting–I did it pretty regularly as a kid and I have managed to curb it to the point where I only do it when one of them breaks and I try to make it even...shades of OCD, I guess. Anyway, I'll stop rambling–congrats! Get home safely and soon! |

February 3rd, 2009 9:57 pm ET teresa has a good point. People shouldn't give Obama a pass because he admitted it. February 3rd, 2009 10:00 pm ET Anderson, I realize you were not able to get in all the questions you wanted, but thanks for trying. Many thought you were going there to interview the president and put him in the hot-seat. Turns out, it was you in the hot seat, literally. LOL! What? Weren't you able to catch a little breeze from "His Coolness?" LOL! Sorry for laughing Actually, I would have been quite comfortable in the room. I love heat. Not to go racial or anything, but I think most black folks do. LOL! About the nails, thanks for clarifying why you were looking at his nails. February 3rd, 2009 10:02 pm ET One of the most impressive things about President Obama during the primaries was his ability to keep calm and steady as he dealt with the more controversial aspects of his campaign, such as the Reverend Wright issue–it's good to see that with the additional pressures of the presidency, he's been able to maintain that. What a refreshing change it is to hear a leader take responsibility for whatever mistakes they make. |

February 3rd, 2009 10:04 pm ET Anderson: It was refreshing to read about your experience today interviewing President Obama. Too bad you only had 10 minutes to ask him questions. I hope you get a chance to interview him again soon so you can ask him those 18 questions you had lined up. I'm curious as to what the questions were and of course, more interested in how the President would have answered them. |

February 3rd, 2009 10:10 pm ET Remember when Obama said we couldn't keep our thermostat at 72 degrees during the primaries? "We can't drive our SUVs and, you know, eat as much as we want and keep our homes on, you know, 72 degrees at all times, whether we're living in the desert or we're living in the tundra, and then just expect every other country is going to say OK, you know, you guys go ahead keep on using 25 percent of the world's energy, even though you only account for 3 percent of the population, and we'll be fine. Don't worry about us. That's not leadership." ~~ Barack Obama Well, he's right, that isn't leadership. Apparently he thinks keeping the whitehouse even warmer than 72 degrees is leadership. At least he is comfortable while my family keeps our thermostat right at 65 and throws on a jacket. |

February 3rd, 2009 10:11 pm ET Excellent article, Anderson; and from what I've seen of the interview, well done, too -- but did you ask him about the "Buy America only" clause in the stimulus bill? Believe it or not, it may turn out to be the single most important question for American jobs, homes, hopes and futures that should have been asked, in the whole of 2009, since if that clause stays in the stimulus bill, Americans and the world are GUARANTEED to repeat the economic results of the 1930's Smoot-Hawley Tariffs i.e. the recession turns into a GREAT DEPRESSION! Other countries, including wacky sidelined opposition political leaders in Canada are already advocating trade retaliation against the United States! Some people, as in the 1930s will listen to them. Oh well, perhaps we are always doomed to repeat the past, since we never seem to learn from history. Good luck, World! |

February 3rd, 2009 10:15 pm ET Tom Daschle wasn't turned down because of not paying his taxes! If that was the case there would be other nominees turned down! February 3rd, 2009 10:16 pm ET President is doing a great job in talking about problems. Needs to really work on re-doing the stimulus . Nancy P. should be ashamed to put something like this out to the American people. |

February 3rd, 2009 10:17 pm ET President Obama is my president and I support him. I did not vote for him but I will support him in these difficult times. It is clear to me that his party leaders are much of the problem and that the president and the republicans are going to have to craft the "Stimulus Bill". The democrat congress with few exceptions are totally out of touch with working Americans struggling to keep our jobs or keep our businesses alive. God help us all. |

February 3rd, 2009 10:19 pm ET I can wait to watch your entire interview with the president Obama, because what is matter with america is matter to us, especially in Europe, I was very impressed by your comments about the president being "CALM","SHARP", "POINT" during the interview even though he admitted his mistates, i beleived he is an honest and open president compare to his predecessor, I hope you keep him in line and most importantly ask him the right questions. |

February 3rd, 2009 10:19 pm ET I just realized why President Bush never granted you an interview. You would ask questions that he wouldn't be able to answer. President Obama is really answering these questions, and he doesn't have a teleprompter. I doubt Bush knew how to answer anything... He was a C student in school and he was a D leader for our nation. |

February 3rd, 2009 10:23 pm ET Anderson I commend Obama for being so forthright in saying how he feels, admitting he make a mistake. February 3rd, 2009 10:24 pm ET The world probably has never seen a president, who can be too honest to his fellow citizens and willing to accept if things go wrong. Pres. Obama is here to change the way politics is done and stands as an example to the world politicians. Can't wait to see the changes he is about to bring to the country. All the best president! |

February 3rd, 2009 10:27 pm ET It's sad that Americans are so desperate that they will excuse tax evasion on the part of politicians in the hope that said politicians will propose legislation to alleviate their distress. It matters not that Obama admits that he "screwed up." The Presidency is not the place to "learn on the job." |

February 3rd, 2009 10:27 pm ET I cannot get enough of President Obama's interviews. He is a great interviewer and has shades of being diplomatic and shades of being point-blank, straightforward. Thanks Anderson. |

February 3rd, 2009 10:28 pm ET Anderson, good interview. There was no way the Bush White House would have allowed YOU do an interview with "W". You would have insisted on asking tough questions and that was not allowed. Remember how the interview with Carol Coleman from an Irish tv station nearly caused a diplomatic incident? "W" looked like a fool and a subsequent scheduled interview with Laura was cancelled as Colemans punishment for asking 'real' questions and not the 'soft' ones "W"s handlers prefered. |

February 3rd, 2009 10:30 pm ET It was a nice interview Anderson. As you have pointed out, asking questions as a follow up on the natural conversation brings out lively interview (as opposed to the prepared questions). Thank You Mr.President. Can we pose questions on how we could reduce the dependency of the free market economy on the big player finance companies? The Game theory talks about how things can level out, if there are more players. How to create more players? With regard to bonus I still hear that Fannie Mae employees still got minimum $5K and a billions of dollars in wall-street firms. How do we control this? |

February 3rd, 2009 10:33 pm ET So what if the president is still smoking? I can't believe you even asked this question. It's nobody's business, and he can smoke as much as he wants as far as I am concerned. Leave that man to have a vice. Gees. Stupid question! |
|
| Danny |
February 3rd, 2009 10:35 pm ET First off, this is a good start for Obama. Now if he would only do it for the other people he appointed to office. I find it amusing that yesterday he was standing behind Daschle 100%, expressing his confidence in him. Now finally, after Daschle himself admits a mistake and rightfully steps down from consideration, does Obama admit he was wrong. The only reason he did this is to protect his image. If Daschle doesn't admit his mistake, Obama never would have either. Timothy Geithner is a perfect example. I haven't seen the interview yet, but I sure hope that one of the questions that made the cut was his lack of transparency and exceptions to the "rules" about lobbyists he has made. I would rather know this than whether or not he has smoked a cigarette. I would also like to hear his explanation to some of the items in the stimulus package, such as the money for "paid volunteers" and hybrid vehicles for the government. |

February 3rd, 2009 10:40 pm ET Anderson – great job on the interview – and VERY cool that you thanked the researchers who supported you. Hey – you really oughta refer to him as President Obama rather than Mr. Obama – I think! |

February 3rd, 2009 10:47 pm ET Please stop asking the President if he has smoked. Leave him alone about that! Next you'll ask him about his personal relationship with Michelle. Just don't put him on the spot about an occasional smoke, if you were under that kind of stress you might do worse. |

February 3rd, 2009 10:49 pm ET Hi Anderson. Good questions, and a good interview. The pup search looks like it's still on hold. Perhaps the President will have a light bulb moment and make a decision before the girls go to college! Lorie Ann, Buellton, Calif. |

February 3rd, 2009 10:53 pm ET The President should be able to walk, talk and say what he wants to say. Too bad if the truth hurts but I applaud anyone who admits their mistakes. Whose ever doing your investigations into the pending staff needs to do a better job, they aren't digging deep enough. Too bad you can't find people who haven't rob their own Gov't while collecting a Gov't check. THANK YOU MR. PRESIDENT! I know have a reason to pledge the flag. |

February 3rd, 2009 10:55 pm ET Good interview, and enjoyed the questions,,,It is nice to have an articulate, thoughtful response from a President. I enjoyed your comments on your blog..and I don't think President Obama is on TV too much,,,but these last 2 weeks seem like years..I think we need to continue to hear from him and be kept appraised of what's going on with the economy. |

February 3rd, 2009 10:55 pm ET Cooper, if you actually read all these responses and get to mine...well, you're beyond any journalist I know and border on the cusp of superhero. I have to admit that I'm about halfway through your book – seeking some sort of inspiration as a journalism/poli sci major...and it just hit me again as I read your blog. My point is: I've never read writing quite like yours. I don't know how to describe it...it sinks into you. Anyways, I have to congratulate you on what a candid and thought-provoking interview you did with President Obama. (And you're better off not interviewing former Pres. Bush – your coverage of Katrina was much more meaningful). I have my first televised interview tomorrow, and it was quite a nice guideline, if you will. Keep up the good work and I'll keep watching. February 3rd, 2009 10:56 pm ET At least he has the balls to say he "scewed up". Bush would not even acknowledge all the major screw ups he pulled and there were many. We're all only human. We all make mistakes. Just be man enough to admitt it. |

February 3rd, 2009 11:02 pm ET "teresa has a good point. People shouldn’t give Obama a pass because he admitted it. If Blagojevich admitted it, should we say , “Well, we’ll keep him around – at least he admitted he screwed up !” You have to look at WHAT THE MISTAKE IS. He almost put ANOTHER tax cheat in a Cabinet position, but GOT CAUGHT!" so? What are we supposed to do about it? It was done, the guy withdrew. At least he apologized, which is something your Bush pres. couldn't do. Whether he means it or not, he said "I screwed up", and that goes a long way into showing that he knows Americans are disappointed. |

February 3rd, 2009 11:02 pm ET I am happy to know that we had 2 of 3 pull out. The bloggers who feel that we are too hard on our president need to realize that we voted for a change in Washington. If this administration does not walk the fine line they will be eaten alive. It is all of us who voted for him that need to not make excuses for him but to remind him of his promises and keep him true to the campaign. Besides the errors of the past administration, we also do not want a replay of The Emperors New Clothes where people are afraid to speak up if there are problems. We are not criticizing as much as ... errr "Keeping them Honest" I still support our President. Thank God I live in the USA where I can disagree with someone even when I support them and not fear a rerun of the "Dixie Chicks" retaliation. |

February 3rd, 2009 11:03 pm ET Anderson, you did great. We love you Anderson. We love you even more with the President. Can't you be appointed to Communications Director or something. OK, back to the issues. We'll get there. It has only been 2 weeks. I think his whole admisnistration plans to get down to business. I have confidence that things are being worked on in order to clean this mess and also minimize the possibility of this type of fiscal situation happening again You have to do more interviews of him. You really brought out the some good stuff, that only you can. He should definately keep you close. He knows you have intergrity and will be fair. I sense that you see that in him as well. Great first interview. Look forward to the many more in years to come. |

February 3rd, 2009 11:04 pm ET I think President Obama was too candid when he admited he screwed up. That was a shocker. Some view it as a good dose of honesty, some vew it as a weakness. Weakness is not what you want to portray to the foes of the world. The American people have to understand that when he is talking the world listens....and we want our president to be strong and powerfull. |

February 3rd, 2009 11:06 pm ET I'm so fed up with most of the reporters at CNN's lack of objectivity, it is quite refreshing that yours sir. Great interview with President Obama! Of your panalist during your show...David Gergen is ALWAYS on point! His voice is always one I make sure I listen to whenever he is on CNN. Why? Because he is logical and doesn't play the Democrat or Republican game when giving his viewpoint of a situation. Though I respect Ed Rollins, I can't always say the same for him. |

February 3rd, 2009 11:06 pm ET How in the world does Barack Obama expect the American public to accept Timothy Geithner as Treasury Secretary especially following the mea culpa and admission on the Tom Daschle "screw up". One would think Timothy Geithner would resign his post in shame, given what Barack Obama said during today's interviews with the network talking heads (including Anderson Cooper). If Timothy Geithner doesn't voluntarily go, Barack Obama should show him to the door. |

February 3rd, 2009 11:06 pm ET Wow, Anderson, I'm not sure if words can express how incredibly jealous I am that you got to do this interview and that you got to be in the Oval Office...it just sounds incredible! And it was an amazing interview. Your question were great and you are right the best interviews are the ones that are just a conversation. It almost sounds almost too rehearsed (if there is such a thing) when the interviewer is so stuck on the questions that they want to ask instead of just letting the interview go where it may! Wonderful job today, Coop! You are an incredible reporter! |

February 3rd, 2009 11:09 pm ET Anderson, please tell me why, in your interview with the President, he was wearing an ear-piece in his left ear? Who was feeding him info? I've never seen a President wear one during a TV interview. |

| Deborah Abernathy-Smith |
February 3rd, 2009 11:09 pm ET President Obama, Please do not lose any sleep over the economy it is a long haul and Rome was not built in a day. You are an upstanding person with character, integrity, humanity, and honesty, most of your Cabinet can use half of what you are made of. Every morning and every night you give the United States issues to God for directions, do not become a doormat for the American People or to the World. You will make mistakes, and you will make some successes. We Americans have your back and front, we may not agree, but I do know you will promote dialogue among the people of the World. The Republicans will fight you all the way, because they had eight years of their failures, and so will the Democrats, because they agreed to the Republican failures. You won the seat they did not have the guts to run (except for H. Clinton, Kerry and McCain), and because of this it will bring jealousy for many of men. Please continue to be determined to help the little people, and continue to be a Husband, Father, Commander and Chief, and President, follow through with your plan, and keep dialogue between your enemies and your allies. You are an excellent public servant with the heart; do not forget that your family is #1 (First Lady Michelle Obama wonderful with the same qualities you have (equally yoked for sure)). Remember 90% of United States has your back and your front, we as serious Americans know the problems and have the patience to go through the worst to get to the prize. Fox News, CNN, ABC, CBC, NBC, and the tabloids cannot take your strengths from you, they can pick out the issues that seemed to be a failure in your 100 days, but can anyone say they made the effort to help the economy, the only Presidents and men with that record is Jesus Christ, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Kennedy, Martin Luther King (he is the President of Civil Rights) and Clinton (despite his mistakes). When it comes to helping the builders of the United States you will receive opposition from both ends, even your counter parts. Remember to say the Our Fathers prayer, take hold of your family and enjoy the ride. Also remember to view Mr. Smith Goes to Washington on DVD and watch it at least once a once a month. View this DVD, because you remind me of the Famous Jimmy Steward, or Henry Fonda (Ox Bow Incident), viewing these movies will allow you to remember, that these are the people you will have to deal with everyday. I have your first stimulus bill in a binder and will never forget that you and the House Democrats had a plan to make the world a better place for growth for the middle people. Continue to do Gods work and you will always shine. God Blessed You President Obama. for a reason. |

February 3rd, 2009 11:09 pm ET At times as you are listening to the President respond, you want to ask him to hurry it up so you can get in a few more questions, but thankfully I resisted the impulse. Good decision Anderson. |

February 3rd, 2009 11:13 pm ET "Oh-oh, Anderson is nervous, his face is perspiring," I thought, at first. But, after watching the interview, I read your blog and now know the oval office was baking. How did President Obama stay so calm and dry? Anyway, loved the interview, you did a fantastic job! During the interview, I marveled at how different this president is from others past - he doesn't come across as defensive or as a politician trying to polish up his image. He's a "working president." David, Ed and Roland - are THE BEST. Could listen to them all night. |

February 3rd, 2009 11:14 pm ET Anderson..President Obama has to get the next pick right. We can't hold on much longer. I'm supporting him, we all should, but my family is running out of time. February 3rd, 2009 11:15 pm ET Anderson, I wish you had asked a follow-up on the war on terror question. Yes, we are at war with terrorist organizations. However those organizations can't exist without significant support of the populace and passive acceptance by the majority. We NEVER hear moderate Muslims condemn the acts of Al Queda or Hamas. Throughout history 'guerrilla' groups needed popular support to survive. How is Obama going to get the so called moderates to step up and denounce the terrorists. Because when they do that, and cut of their support, the battle is 90% over. |
|
| Kimberly Chance |
February 3rd, 2009 11:16 pm ET Many people have commented on how courageous it was for President Obama to admit that he "screwed up". I think an important question is to ask him WHY he thinks he messed up. Is it because he truly believes that the vetting process was flawed with Daschle or is he simply sorry about the amount of heat he received over the nomination? I am still trying to understand what motivates President Obama. When you better understand what motivates someone it is easier to put the decisions they make into context. The one thing that your interview highlighted is that President Obama is a smooth, calm talker. There is more to man than his words. I am still waiting to see the "real" Obama. |

February 3rd, 2009 11:20 pm ET The facts are: This is a massive (30%) increase in spending . Nancy Pelosi (who is keeping a low profile) wrote this. NOT Obama. He doesn't have the experience. He doesn't know what he's doing. Obama PROMISED not to appoint or nominate anyone who lobbied for what they would do in Obama's administration. He broke that promise in Tom Daschle's nomination. I didn't occur to Dashcle or Obama that they might get caught in not paying fed. income tax. This administration is beginning waive the rules for each tax offender who wants to run this country with Obama. Shouldn't that bother people? |

February 3rd, 2009 11:28 pm ET Anderson, Just saw your interview and I thought it went well and, of course, too short. You and he seemed both respectful of each other which is very important to me. Glad you did not take a "gotcha" stance. I think he'll call you back for another interview. |

February 3rd, 2009 11:28 pm ET Thanks for the great interview with President Obama! I'm glad he's a real person and isn't afraid to own up to mistakes he may make. I think he is doing a great job so far! He's very transparent which I think is missing from politics in general...especially in Canada where I'm from. President Obama is an inspiration to us all! Thanks too, for telling us about the interview and what it was like for you. I really like watching every weeknight as I appreciate your honesty and genuine desire to bring us unbiased news and giving us a taste of who you are also. You're real. I appreciate that! Thanks!!! February 3rd, 2009 11:28 pm ET Anderson, Great interview. I agree on the commonly used term "cool" for the President but nobody ever mentions that he is philosophical, which I think he is. His background as outlined in his books demonstrate that he faced up to deep existenial questions and thought them through. I believe he has thought through issues like the meaning of life, suicide, love , etc. When you live through these questions as they apply to your life with feeling and reflection no question is a shock and you come across as 'cool". In this regard I suspect his faith is much more nuanced than came across in the campaign. I mean one cannot elected in the US without believing in God and being very black and white about it. But I cannot imagine this man being black and white about such a deep and complex issue. In this regard I think his choice of Lincoln as hero rather than any of the 20th century Presidents who put God up front and center is significant. I hope one day to hear him talk more openly about the big philosophical questions that have been there throughout the ages. When he moves on to his post Presidency we should look forward to such contributions. Right now he has other stuff on his plate. But bottom line : he is the most philosophical President I have seen over the past 60 years. Hence he is "cool" Patrick Hennessy |

February 3rd, 2009 11:32 pm ET Hey Anderson! So I really enjoyed your interview, with President Obama. However, I noticed that CNN cut to a clip as you were talking with The Panel, a clip of President Obama, scratching, then picking his nose! I tried to comment on the live blog, but my comment was not approved! What happen to accountability Anderson?! |

February 3rd, 2009 11:32 pm ET Hello Mr. A.C., You should not have mentioned the president’s nails…i find myself checking them out instead of listening. Thank you and COngratulations on you interview. |

February 3rd, 2009 11:32 pm ET I really do not buy Obama's lame "apology." Consider: a whopping total of THREE individuals were nominated by him in succession over the past few weeks, EACH one of which had serious tax evasion issues. There is absolutely NO WAY even a rookie politician doesn't delve into every aspect of a nominee's past. Particularly for the Obama handlers, who ran him on an almost angelic/saintly squeaky clean image. No. This was a slap in the face of the millions who got suckered into the "whole new way of doing business in Washington" shtick. And I have EVERY reason to believe it will continue. Two of his tax evaders 'fessed up only when presented with the prospect of being nominated. Obama only 'fessed up today–when a large New York Times editorial expressed extreme displeasure with this hypocritical act that one would expect from a political hack rather than Obama, whose whole campaign was carefully crafted on the rhetoric of "elevation." Yet we have at least one person here who is "happy" because Obama "accepted responsibility." Duh...that isn't the point–he was aware of their tax evasion when he nominated them. Business as usual in the Oval Office. This guy's guile is going to wear thin over time in my opinion. |

February 3rd, 2009 11:34 pm ET The Government should have paid off all mortgages under 250K and give low interest rates to first time home buyers who purchased a foreclosed home. This would free up spendable cash, jump start the economy and probably cheaper, than the current stimulus... |

February 3rd, 2009 11:36 pm ET It's sad, but I'm never surprised by a tainted politician. It seems to go with a job in Washington. I don't think that anyone really blames Obama for his picks that have failed. Congress is viewed at an all time low, and padding this stimulas package didn't help. We all want to help the country, but at what cost. With all of the economic geniuses hard at work, I hope that we can come up with a plan that speeds up recovery, but doesn't bankrupt us all. So what was the White House really like, AC? I always wanted to take a tour, but didn't take advantage of my time in DC. I don't think that you can tour anymore. Hope you get invited back soon-nice job! |

February 3rd, 2009 11:39 pm ET Anderson, It would be nice if you could do a report on how many more Congress Members didn't pay their taxes or pay them late or etc. And to change the subject a bit ~ Love your show!! |

February 3rd, 2009 11:41 pm ET I noticed tonight your guest stated there will only be a 1% of money not used for the stimulus package. Could you please clear up where the rest of the money is being spent. I also heard that illegal immigrants will be entitled to the same money as American citizens is this correct? I would like a response. Thank you |

February 3rd, 2009 11:42 pm ET I disagree. I found that aspect of the interview to be quite interesting. The president not only admits to having this "vice" but also publically displays his efforts to rid himself of it. He could have avoided the question entirely but chose to answer it openly and honestly. Not only has my respect for the president sky-rocketed but my admiration for him has as well. |

February 3rd, 2009 11:44 pm ET Excellent job on the interview. I love the personal topics you covered - it was certainly more interesting that the interviews other reports have had with President Obama. You are truly the BEST in the business! Susan Lemarie |

February 3rd, 2009 11:45 pm ET Good job Anderson, you asked the questions that most people wanted you to ask him. I was a little concerned about some of the projects added into the stimulus, but he did state that several were non-negotiable. They really need to work together on this stimulus, we have never seen anything like this before, and I'm affraid if democrats and republicans in the senate and congress, do not work together, something will get passed that will make things horrible worse. |

February 3rd, 2009 11:45 pm ET Cooper ... I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate this interview because it seemed so unbiased, fair, and comfortable. Thank you for good reporting. You seemed to enjoy and appreciate it too. I know it was a lot of pressure, but you handled it so well. I am a Democrat, and an Obama supporter, and I just want this country to be healed. Keep up the good work. Maybe you can interview our new President on a regular basis! Again, thank you. |

February 3rd, 2009 11:46 pm ET Did you think President Obama's answer to the cigarette smoking question was odd - he said he hadn't had a cigarette "on these grounds" - does that mean he has had one but just not at the White House? |
|
| BRENT |
February 3rd, 2009 11:49 pm ET great job Anderson....Do you think he is still smoking>? |

February 3rd, 2009 11:54 pm ET Dear Anderson, Glad you got the interview – it's always good to see President Obama responding to questions. He is refreshingly informative as well as intelligent, competent, able to multi-task, and cool under pressure – to name but a few favorable attributes. I do suggest you keep working to focus on substantive questions and highlight the most important issues versus flashy items – examples: how many times and minutes did CNN have to flash the "I SCREWED UP" headline? We don't need to know if he gave up smoking yet – ask next year maybe. Also, he should be referred to as PRESIDENT Obama, not MR. Obama – the office should be respected. |

February 3rd, 2009 11:57 pm ET I was lucky enough to remember to set my DVR to catch this, Anderson I think you truly did a superb job. If President Obama seemed cool, sharp, or on point, it was merely due to your relaxed personality and ability to execute an interview to please the American public all while appearing to simply have a private conversation, great selection on the questions! I think it was awesome! |
|
| Jon Bell |
February 3rd, 2009 11:58 pm ET Andersen, you seemed to have the knack, talent, poise, and presence to bring out the best in President Obama. He is indeed a very complex man but, it figures, and is pleasing to know that you are just the type to bring it all out to comprise a commendable, and informative interview. Now, if only I knew how to convince CNN to allow you to interview everyone that I am interested in (that are in the news!)!! Thank you for a great interview! |

February 4th, 2009 12:00 am ET Hey Anderson.. Great interview. It's nice to see someone ask questions that are more interesting and engaging. You strike the perfect balance of toughness and lightness with ease. Well done! I think you were able to get him to relax even if was just a little.. Not an easy task.. and nice to know that he knows more about you than you probably realized? It would be very interesting to ask him about New Orleans and his plans for reconstruction, as well as NAFTA. Maybe a future interview? Many Canadians like me are very excited that he is coming here for a visit. I think his vision of the world is a breath of fresh air.. And I do hope that air will eventually be "fresh"...... |

February 4th, 2009 12:03 am ET Dressed down, dressed up has nothing to do with integrity nor ability but the outward appearance and ego. The President has already demonstrated his ability to handle himself and situations with tact. Using slang, "I screwed up". If you pinch him he's an human being. Lets let that be and again stay focused. However, Anderson we the Americans do not want the buckshot effect, we really want to know what's going on. I saw a few items today the Republicans said were wastes i.e. $1b to youth jobs, HUH!. Will they stop treating the American public like we are idiots and blowing smoke in our face. I watch CNN a lot recently especially over Fox News (they are soooo over the top) and find some remarks inflammatory. Please report the news and DO NOT be sensational like Fox. Murrow would roll with what some call journalism. |

February 4th, 2009 12:05 am ET I disagree with mark. Its not a stupid question! I was interested in the answer as a former smoker and current avid gum chewer! My two favorite men (other than my wonderful husband and fabulous son), in the same room together almost made me need to smoke again. You know-one of those realy good ones just after a satiating meal or...what have you. |

February 4th, 2009 12:06 am ET Awesome Job Anderson! Love our President and his candor...I'm certain this was just one of many interviews to come between you and him. Make sure you send him a follow-up hand written note. |

February 4th, 2009 12:11 am ET Anderson, I like how you gave thanks to the people who did research for you and how you note it is a team effort. I enjoy your notes on trim nails and the intimacy level in the Oval Office. I don't bite my nails, but I always notice little details. As soon as he said, "not on the grounds," I smiled and I was glad you brought that up, but didn't press him. Almost always you ask follow-up questions that I would ask and that's another reason why I thoroughly enjoy watching you. During this interview I noticed President Obama's comfort level. I thought about when he was running for President, and after he was elected, how frequently he said, "ummm..." Maybe he's just getting enough sleep now, as I am sure he was neglecting during the primaries; but probably, he is relaxing into his presidency, even with all of the pressure on him. He is making me proud as he epitomizes an intelligent, confident, kind, moral, thoughtful man (among many other things). I believe in him and his determination to change our country. I find it hard to believe that his popularity has reduced 20% since he has taken office. |

February 4th, 2009 12:13 am ET I am a faithful fan of Anderson as always you do a great job on anything you take on, my biggest problem is the way that you refer to the president as Mr. Obama,he is no longer Mr Obama, or president elect he is now President Obama!!!!!!! |

February 4th, 2009 12:22 am ET If the president had to personally pay a heating bill of more than $600, perhaps he too would walk around like the rest of us layered in sweats, wool socks and anything else to stay warm while we keep the thermostat at 55 degrees!!! |
|
| Diane - IL |
February 4th, 2009 12:24 am ET Great interview Anderson! I was surprised to hear the president admit to being wrong, hopefully he won't be making any more mistakes like that. One thing that bothers me, it's a relatively minor issue, but why does Obama keep the Oval office so warm? Does he not realize how much more energy he is using? During the interview he talks about winterizing homes to save energy while creating more jobs. Obama needs to set an example for the rest of America by turning down the thermostat and save taxpayers the cost of his heating bills. |

February 4th, 2009 12:34 am ET Great interview Anderson! I appreciate the fact that President Obama is making himself so available and the more I see of the man he is the more confidence I have in him as our president. You truly helped bring out the best in him today. Thanks! |

February 4th, 2009 12:37 am ET Anderson, I only got to see blips of the interview, but what I did see was great, I love that you dont stick to a scripted interview and follow your instincts. Yes, we want serious questions and answers, but our quirky curiosities must also be addressed. Great job. I'm a nail biter, I'm always looking at others to see if they do it too!!! |

February 4th, 2009 12:40 am ET The interview with the President was very interesting. It's funny he stated staying up sleepless nights about the economy and probably takes a smoke somewhere. I'm thinking that our former President was never the same mentally after 911 and it's been overlooked by everyone. Blowing crapp up while under his Presidential watch had to be devastating with permanent mental inflictions. Has current President ever thought about temporarily raising minimum wages by $3.00 for several years to help the economy get going? Giving tax credit to those company's participating. That's better than just handing out rebates. The wage increase would come in handy with the fast food industry workers and many others. Maybe the unemployed would fine it more appealing to consider working at the places. Thanks For letting me comment. |

February 4th, 2009 12:56 am ET hello anderson, i find that virtually everyone's soft on the new president. good or bad, i can't tell but i honestly don't expect much from leaders, that way if they end up makin good strides, it's more a pleasin surprise. just please don't get too carried away, he's good sure, but is that all that qualifies him as suitable? |

February 4th, 2009 1:21 am ET @Sohail: It is idiots like you that make me purely sick! Can you fix the Economy??? If you could, you wouldn't be making sarcastic remarks on a blog. You'd actually be in office trying to do something about it. You need a life!! How much debt are you in? Nobody held a gun to your head and made you get in debt. Do you have a job? Are you even a citizen? Be careful about throwing stones, they tend to boomarang and knock your brains out. Oh excuse me, too late, that has already happened! |

February 4th, 2009 1:25 am ET The problem with most of the nay sayers on this thread is that they all think in blank and white terms when it comes to solutions. President Obama was trying to roll out a recovery package in stages. First the stimulus, next help homeowners and middle class, next healthcare. But no, no one can have patience it has to be the Repugs way or no way. I say, tell the republicans to sit in the corner, don't even let them come to the table. If they try to filibuster, let them know that you remember the nuclear option and either help us get this economy going or be left sitting in the station while the train moves on. They lost, they have no good ideas, they are bankrupt. Now they want to take credit for helping homeowners. I seem to remember a few months ago the Democrats wanted to do that and all these Bush hacks fought it to steal our money for the rich bank barons. |

February 4th, 2009 1:32 am ET "People in glass houses should not throw stones. " I don't see why President Obama should regret his choice. Mr. dashchle should be the one apologizing to the president. He knew he had some crocodiles in his closet and pretend not knowing. I bet if majority politicians are investigated concerning their taxes, this country wii be in trouble. We will have very few leaders Please Washington clean -up your mess. Greed is what will bring this country to its knees. |
|
| Mike |
February 4th, 2009 1:45 am ET Yeah he admitted he screwed up....what else could he do? You would think they he would have done some research before making this choice. So why isnt the media tearing him a new one? Are all his decisions going to be like this? ...no thought or research |

February 4th, 2009 1:51 am ET One of a kind interview although you really don't need it to hear from me. The incorporation of personal questions alongside with a very issue-focused Q&A has TV watchers (which includes me) feel as if I am actually there asking the questions that are relevant to me. It also reminded me how human President Obama is just like any everyday American. The only difference is his name is preceded by President. Hands and heart down to you, Mr. Cooper and the CNN crew. Thank you! |

February 4th, 2009 2:00 am ET Hi Anderson, I absolutely love president Obama because he's cool and he knows what the american people needs. He's on a path to making a big impact in this world. He's destined for greatness. I have confidence in him because as I pay attention to him I can see he's confident in himself. I know no one isn't perfect but as we move forward we are all learning from the mistakes that still affects our lives daily. God always knows what he doing when he do it. I truly believe it!!! |
|
| Amanda |
February 4th, 2009 2:13 am ET I'm so proud that we have a competent and caring president that knows what he's talking about and admits when he's wrong. If he can admit this I know that he would be able to admit whenever he's wrong. Something that Bush never did! Of course you never got an interview with Bush, not surprised at all. Their administration didn't thrive on transparency. I still heavily support President Obama and he knows exactly what he needs to do which puts me at ease. Well done Anderson, with your cute self!!!;-) |

February 4th, 2009 2:25 am ET Its nice to hear that President Obama is just as cool, on point, and sharp in person as he seems to be to us watching him every step of the way during the campaign and since. If there's anyone as cool, sharp, and on point as he is, its you, Anderson. That's why AC360 is the only news show I watch every night. February 4th, 2009 2:28 am ET Hm... the conspiracy theorist in me is at work again. I wonder if these nominees accepted the offers as cabinets members while willfully withholding damaging information was some kind of intentional, sordid, sleazy attempt to disgrace and shame president Obama. Hm... |
|
| Jacqueline |
February 4th, 2009 2:42 am ET P.S.: As well, what about the F.B.I. and C.I.A., the internal Revenue? The president's vetting team? Are they the same people from his campaign? How is it they are fouling so when they seemed to have done a much better job before he became president? What's going on? Are there enemies within? |
|
| Gina |
February 4th, 2009 2:54 am ET Even you, Anderson, who are always so calm, sharp, and on-point seemed a bit nervous walking into the oval office to meet President Obama. Maybe it was the heat in the room? You were great with the questioning and listening. Love your style...you are the best! |

| Peter A. |
February 4th, 2009 2:57 am ET Anderson, Regarding the stimulus package – if the Republicans believe that investment in Education, Health, the Environment, the Arts, Roads, Bridges, Housing, Energy are all categories of wasteful spending, can you you please ask their spokesmen to enumerate the areas they believe are worth investing in? Can you please ask them to explain how government projects that employ people of all skill and training levels will generate fewer jobs than tax cuts (for those who are fortunate enough to be taxed on their income). They have been allowed to get away with indefensible slogans. No one tests their logic. That's why we're in the mess we're in. |

February 4th, 2009 4:52 am ET i got to watch the interview and i'm glad that i read the blog because anderson's interview felt like there were fewer questions thanfrom what i saw of matt lauer's but i can never compare right? the blog explained everything. it was overall a great insightful interview. one other thing, ac 360 is a 2-hour show right? well from what i read anyway since i haven't been to the states in almost 4 years. i only get to watch 1 hour of ac 360 here in southeast asia, in the philippines specifically. |

February 4th, 2009 5:28 am ET Anderson did a great job! 2 of my favorite men in one room...I would have loved to be there! I don't think President Obama is to blame for Others Tax problems. I am sure he has better things to do then do back checks on the ppl he nominates for certain positions. |

February 4th, 2009 6:20 am ET Anderson, A fine interview. Since I stumbled on AC360 several years ago, I tune to CNN for my news. You do good interview, man. I believe you asked and followed questions in your mind and ones I wanted to listen to and felt good with the answers. The more I listen to the man, the more I feel confident he is the President for the time. I very much give you credit for having mentioned you political consultants in prep for your interview. May I just add, David Gergen ROCKS. The man is fair, poised and informed. It helped you went to the panel as you played your interview. You get A+'s from me. Anyone that has Erica Hill as part of their program ROCKS... keep her!! Wellness to you and yours. |

February 4th, 2009 7:17 am ET I am very unsure about this urgency to lend money to businesses. I own a small business and you know why I need a loan from the bank? To pay off my debt, close down said business and go out to look for a job (yes, that in itself should be fun – NOT). Let's face it. Businesses need consumers. If you're going to borrow more money but no one is buying your product, then I think it's pretty obvious that you'll just end up with more debt. Unless they figure a way of making the money reach the basis of the economy (the consumer) fast, we're not going to see a why out of this anytime soon. |

February 4th, 2009 8:31 am ET The best times of our lives are ahead of us as Americans. We have finally learn to save and not spend every penny we make. No matter how much money you give to the banks. I would not borrow a cent from them. For the most part , you can get a better interest rate from the Mob. The money would be better spend by giving the American taxpayer a cash gift say about $10,000. then you would see some immediate simulation of the economy. The President is already doi ng some very important- he's being honest with the people. |

February 4th, 2009 10:43 am ET My two brainy hunks in one room...WOW! While watching the interview, I was trying to figure out why you looked different. Could it be the lighting? Change of make-up artist? HD TV? Perhaps the heat from all the spot lights? OHHH, it's the heat at the Oval Office! Funny how Pres. Obama still looked his usual cool, calm, collected, and concise self in spite of the 10-minute ticking limit to your session with him. And I thought you were sweating from the pressure! LOL! Anyway, AC, I truly enjoyed watching your first interview with the president. For some reason, I feel very instinctively good about him. There is really something there... |

February 4th, 2009 10:45 am ET Hi Mr. Anderson Cooper and Producers, I admire your reporting techniques you always appear to be in the moment and present with the interview very conversational. Thanks! I am a big enthusiast of your show and the President in fact after posting your interview link on facebook the comment says, “Two people I'd love to have over for dinner" I went to the gym last night a little later just so I could spend my cool down time on the treadmill watching the interview. I understand you only have 10 minutes to talk, but I found myself wanting more continuous interview time and less production. I enjoyed watching the interview, but it comes off as if this man is still on the campaign trail. When do the media concede with the trial for office and proceed with respecting the President of the United States of America. Slow it down some. I understand it is CNN, which I love and watch faithfully. It is just that sometimes it moves like a game show rapid fire with no time to digest its content or sincerity; sure, you will blast it 20 more time in the next 5 minutes, programming the viewers mind to think he makes split second decisions. Lets be real he is not making split second decisions, yet the production of the interview plugs him like a minute man. Please producers a little respect for the President of the United States of America. Lots of Love, |

February 4th, 2009 11:09 am ET Hi Anderson, great interview! But what I like best is your observation about his nails.)))It is not often to get more informal picture of some event like interview with President. February 4th, 2009 11:53 am ET Hi Anderson, Since you only had ten minutes, it would've been great if you had ditched all the questions, and just had a chat with the president from your heart, you know, forgetting you're a news guy. He is such a genuinely kind, affable person, and it looked like you were grilling him, maybe because you were so obviously nervous. He might've put you at ease if you weren't racing along in that CNN hardball style–never seems that's who you really are at all. Anyway, I enjoyed the interview; you are two of my favorite, and beautiful men. |

February 4th, 2009 12:31 pm ET Great interview – well executed and obviously well thought out. It was refreshing to see Anderson thank all the behind the scenes people who helped make this happen, and great to see a different President come through. I liked the lightening round, it made it all seem more amenable ... Ten minutes is obviously not long enough, but Anderson you made the most you could with it and the result was very noteworthy. Two smart men interacting with each other, exactly how it should be. Moments like this, is what keeps me tuning in time and again. |

February 4th, 2009 12:45 pm ET As a completely heterosexual male, and not in the Ted Haggart sense, I love you and your ability to penetrate respectively such a high profile interviewee as our very own Pres. Kudos! I'm constantly impressed by our president's candor and attempts to fulfill his promises with integrity. Like you and our president, I am seeing a growing number of people in the main stream media 'keeping them honest' and being more honest. Good man! |

February 4th, 2009 12:51 pm ET Hi Anderson, I wish you would of mentiones to the President yesterday during your interview that perhaps he needs to have every member of the House, Senate, and Congress audited. I bet the trillion dollars that we need to stimulate this economy will be paid for! Best, Huntrev |

February 4th, 2009 1:03 pm ET Hi Anderson, Good interview. I liked the overall mood of general, straightforward conversation. I think you learn much more about a person when you allow them to speak when they are at ease. I really liked this conversational interview. There might be one explaination of why you were allowed an interview with President Obama. He owes much of his political success to the young demographic which is your audience. So, if he wants to continue to use public support to put pressure on congress, then appearing on your show would give him some political leverage. It would be interesting to see if you would get such an interview when that political leverage was not needed. Perhaps that is being overly suspicious of me, but we are afterall dealing with a superb politician. My hope is that he just plain felt like talking! Maybe he keeps his office warm because he is undiagnosed with low thyroid, that would make him feel cold all the time! That might be why he is so calm too! |

February 4th, 2009 1:05 pm ET Good job Anderson! I saw the clips from 360 last night and just finished watching the full interview. As always you and President Obama were on point which made the entire interview very informative. I also like the personal questions at the end...very cool! I'll see you tonight on 360. Keep up the excellent work. Q. |

February 4th, 2009 1:07 pm ET to James on Feb 3rd commenting on Pres. Obama keeping the temperature too warm when asking us to conserve: The temperature is too warm because of the camera lights and keeping them on for 5 interviews – which hasn't happened in the white house for a while... but if that is the worst critisizm you can come up with, I think the "Democrat" in the white house is doing just fine. |

February 4th, 2009 1:16 pm ET Anderson you are the best. A President that admits he made a mistake !!! The quality of a good man/President that admits when he is wrong, Lord help him and US thru this mess. United we stand and divided we fall. |

February 4th, 2009 1:19 pm ET Anderson, That was a brilliant interview with President Obama. You should do this more often because yours was the best of ALL the five. And please, see if you can get your colleague DANA BASH, to start referring to the President as such. It should be President Obama or Mr President... Cheers. |

February 4th, 2009 1:23 pm ET Anderson, The interview was great! Sensational! You were perfect, very safe and quiet (even if only in our eyes because interview the President must give a cold in the belly). I think your routine should be done in much sweat, study, dedication, and discipline. But worth it! Your work is admirable! |

February 4th, 2009 1:48 pm ET How many of us didn't hear or understand the meaning behind the many times President Obama said that the changes we hope for aren't just going to happen overnight? Have we forgotten that key aspect of his many speeches on the subject? Furthermore, I am more than puzzled as to why Tom Daschel's withdrawal is continually coined as an embarrassment for our president. I would venture to say that it is a great "disappointment" for President Obama. Shouldn't the embarrassment belong to Mr. Daschel and the so-called expert vetters that let our president down? I wonder if those who have changed their positive opinion about our president and now poll against him, were ever fully on his side to begin with. |

February 4th, 2009 1:56 pm ET Anderson I enjoyed the interview, but I have to ask, why the media seems to focused on what the "Republicans like, dislike, care about" etc. The media seems to care more about what the Republicans like and dislike regarding the Stimulas, how to govern etc., I guess you all didn't get the memo in November. People overwhelmingly voted for Obama and the Dems. Were sick to death of the Republicans and their views, their trickle down economic policies, their WAR, their feelings etc., Maybe if the media paid more attention to what the Dems are doing and how Obama is attempting to save this country from it's total demise then the Stimulas bill would stand a chance of passing. I blame the media for this mess. You all carried Bush and the GOP water for nearly eight years, well it's over, they lost, time to move on already! So give us a break, I for one don't give a crap what Mitch or Bohener think, their ideas as well as they are irrelevant! |

February 4th, 2009 2:00 pm ET Hi Anderson Cooper, So many questions with so little time. The most I enjoyed was the part when you mentioning Abraham Lincoln and President Obama eloquently simulated his economic situation in comparison to Lincoln's civil war, He and he seeks answers by constant learning. Great job, Mr Cooper, nail-biter. |

February 4th, 2009 2:02 pm ET Good interview. It showed a side of President Obama that the other two I watched didn't capture. You just have a way of making connections. That's why I watch. I also appreciate you giving credit to those behind the scenes. Hope there are more opportunities like this in the next four (or eight) years. |

February 4th, 2009 2:10 pm ET Anderson, I wish you had asked a follow-up on the war on terror question. Yes, we are at war with terrorist organizations. However those organizations can’t exist without significant support of the populace and passive acceptance by the majority. Why do we never hear moderate Muslims condemn the acts of Al Queda or Hamas? I would have liked to see Obama say it's time for these moderates to step up. Five points to Obama for admitting his mistake. Minus twenty points for knowing about the issues with Geitner, Killefer, Daschle, and Richardson before nominating them but doing it anyway. |

February 4th, 2009 2:14 pm ET I understand the anger of individuals who have lost value in their homes and due to the impact it is having on the economy will support whatever is deemed necessary to get the housing market back on track. That said, what is to be done for those of us who chose to invest in our 401ks that have now been cut in half, rather thatn buying a house we knew we could not afford. I don't see anyone jumping to help us – yet our loss is just a big since that, rahter than a house, was our savings for retirement. |

February 4th, 2009 2:17 pm ET Hi Anderson, I just want to say congratulations on a terrific job last night. I keep hearing from other folks that your questions (compared to other anchors’) were the most thoughtful and concentrated on the most important issues. All the research paid off. It goes to show that one can never be too prepared for these things. Kudos! Lilibeth |

February 4th, 2009 2:26 pm ET As a strong supporter of President Obama I appreciated the interview. My only comment is the Republican Party continues with their divisive tactics and I am frankly sick of them. Instead of trying to solve the crisis in a spirit of cooperation, they have chosen to focus on 2012. I don't appreciate nitpicking and criticism from the very people who stood by during the last eight years of deregulation and greed. |

February 4th, 2009 2:30 pm ET Thanks for doing this great interview Anderson. President Obama is a doing a great job so far and deserves the chance to talk about what his goals for this administration are without interuption. I enjoyed President Obama's nod to AC360. |

February 4th, 2009 2:33 pm ET Good interview but I wish you had more time for more questions but you only get what they give you! I am not surprised the President admitted to making a mistake it makes him more human and I wish everyone would quit assuming he is some demi God! He is a man trying to do a job and he is doing the best he can but I think he should have taken control of the situation before the guy backed out it would have seemed more like Obama was in charge then just letting it all sort of happen the way it did! Anderson one more thing Yes you can stop biting your nails, I used to do it when I was younger but I stopped and started growing long nails but I'm a woman, not sure you want long nails! Keep up the Good work Anderson! |

February 4th, 2009 2:45 pm ET Everyone please take a deep breath and give Mr. President Obama a break!!! He’s only a couple of weeks into his administration and every idea, decision or out of the box thought has been and is being dissected to pieces and in most cases negatively attack with no regard for the good it will do. There are caveats associate with everything we do in life as anyone with sound judgment knows. Stop listening to “Mr. Rush Know Nothing” who has never been asked to face up to any of the mindless things he has uttered from his tongue with no rudder tie to it. Enough Already…. |

February 4th, 2009 3:21 pm ET Hey AC, Congratulations on your interview with President Obama. It was an interesting one. Got me glued to my seat and eyes on the screen. I loved his poise, charms and most especially very eloquent way of speaking. He is human and very honest. I guess that was why he admitted making a mistake. No one is above mistake and thats what makes us human. I am very proud of him and admire his courage. Best wishes, |

February 4th, 2009 3:56 pm ET Anderson, I saw it last night, you did a great job, it's ok that you did not interview President Bush and you should never apologize for standing for the american people, we are the one who watch. February 4th, 2009 4:19 pm ET I think we live in a very sad world when u have a President that is really for the people and you have all these republicans that aren't. They showed us this when Bush was in office it's so amazing that any bill Bush wanted to pass they were for it whether right or wrong they just vote hands down. Now here is something that will help me and so many others like myself and now you want to debate about it. Come on Republicans what is really wrong with yall. Can yall do something good what you don't realize is American are looking at all of your reaction it's leaving a bad taste in our mouths |

February 4th, 2009 4:20 pm ET It seems to me that if as much as 90% of the stimulus package is widly areed upon by the senate then we should immediatly imploy that 90% and simply keep the other 10% in reserve to be used at the senate's discression. (I think it should be given to the indudustry that can demonstrait the largest job creation, let them compete for the money). It makes no sense to hold up this badly needed stimulus for this petty and small disagreement. sorry for the spelling |

February 4th, 2009 4:45 pm ET The Government should create a savings bond that doubles in value in the course of 1-3 years. They can use part of the bail out funds to pay people when they cash them in. You will need stipulations on the amount you can purchase of course. Trust me this would make people spend.People feel more comfortable spending when they know money is guarenteed to come back their way. |

February 4th, 2009 5:00 pm ET 1st, it was a great interview, and now i've seen some of the competitors, it was really good stuff, he actually looked like he was talking to U...however, u should not be allowed to wear a blue shirt, to distracting with those dreamy eyes... stick to white so we can focus on what your saying! 2nd i'm kind of over all the kicking of the wall street people, now that Wells Fargo cancelled their plans for Vegas, how may reservations got cancelled, meals not eaten, tips not shared... the working people did not get PAID there ... getting to be McCarthism ... when everyone was making money it was ok, now its like evil to even have $$$ ... how is this going to help the economy! PEOPLE NEED JOBS! same as w/ the tax cuts... or the $5000 car stimulus, if u don't have a job, cutting taxes doesn't help... if you don't have a job $5000 towards a new car ... doesn't help! |

February 4th, 2009 5:04 pm ET I enjoyed watching the interview with President Obama. I don't recall this kind of attention or scrutiny being given to President George W. In fact, didn't George W. spend his first hundred days at the Ranch? It is refreshing to hear someone so articulate, someone who considers all the issues. President Obama has an incredibly difficult job ahead of him. Unfortunately, many appear to be spending all their time looking for missteps, give the new President a break. When President Obama signs the bill extending healthcare to more children, it will be a great step. I cannot believe Republicans would use scaremongering tactics to prevent something so essential and caring to occur. Whatever happened to compassionate conservatism? Every new plan offered, merely increases the administrative costs and jobs instead of increasing coverage, Extending an existing plan makes sense. Keep up the good work Mr. President. |

February 4th, 2009 5:19 pm ET Anderson, I loved your interview with the Prez. Thank you. I ask because we have a PWD and absolutely LOVE her! It's our first dog as a family and, due to the kids' allergies, we had limited options. Am I glad we got a PWD. The kids have absolutely no allergic reaction to her. She is just the right size, loving, and protective of all three kids. It would be neat to have the same dog as the Prez & his family. nI'd love to hear back from you. Do you have a dog? |

February 4th, 2009 5:23 pm ET I watched your interview with President Obama. I understand his plan. I know that democrats have a lot of ideas on how to help or save our economy, but some of their items they put in this bill I don't agree on. I'm worried that this is going to back fire in Obama's face. We need to focus on Americans getting work, so that they can pay their debt or bills, or as Washington would say shop. It doesn't matter how much extra money you give someone on their taxes, because they are going to pay bill or debt. I know I do. I'm a single mom. Any extra cash I get goes to my kids tummies, bills and or debt. I voted for President Obama, but at this point I'm worried he is going to give into the republicans. |

February 4th, 2009 5:26 pm ET Anderson, I apologize for being such a cynic, but I will always believe these interview snippets are PR junkets the White House sets up when the president wants something from Congress and needs the American people to rally around him. The Bush administration did too good of a job with it before and during the Iraq conflict. It seems yesterday was a grand manipulation to make America feel good about this president and his economic stimulus package. You did an awesome job regardless. You still rock. I'd love to see you in an anything goes real interview-no handlers, no prefab White House rhetoric answers, Obama having to be real, you getting to the honest answers as only you can. That is why the Bush administration probably never wanted you around. God forbid we get true answers about the Katrina debacle. Then again, those of us who worked with the survivors know the answers anyway. And none of it was pretty. At any rate, I'm glad you had your first of probably many more invites into the Oval Office. That is until they have something to hide and don't want you getting at reality |

February 4th, 2009 5:27 pm ET Hey Anderson, Sorry so late – changes have happened. I agree with you totally – a conversational interview is so much more sincere – it ends up being more truthful, and more enjoyable to watch. I have to tell you though – I was not shocked at all that President Obama was so cool about the mistake he made. He's a good person with a good heart – he will obviously admit when he's messed up, and as an intelligent person would see it – he does not see if as a failure but progress – He admires Lincoln because he kept on learning – you have to fail to learn – it's how progress is made. Thinking about him fixing the economy – I look forward to him in office -and know he will do great things for this country – I have to slow down -everything in good time – but honestly right now anyone being able to fix the ecomony is as hard sometimes as faith. Recently there was an article in our local paper about his choice of dogs – Portuguese water dogs are so cute and loveable – I hope the family picks one. Thank you. Karen |

February 4th, 2009 5:57 pm ET Given the unnecessary programs that each Senator has stuffed into the 700+ page Stimulus package, it would seem obvious that these elected officials are just as oblivious to Main Street as the Corporate CEO's. Wouldn't it be more logical to pass one program at a time, like unemployment or health care benefits for the unemployed, to ensure that no "pork" squeeks thru? And please explain to me why President Obama and his "team", can't achieve this by scheduling a mandatory meeting with the Senators and Congressman, during which they all push up their sleeves and discuss one issue at a time, then vote on it. No lobbyists, no back-door meetings, just hard work dealing with one issue at a time. It seems pretty simple to me, but maybe my 15 years of experience owning and operating a manufacturing business hasn't given me enough experience yet on how to eliminate pork and operate within my means. |

February 4th, 2009 6:27 pm ET I'm really upset with the media and some of the reporters who demonstrates on a daily basis the problem they face with having an African-American president. They continuously disrespect President Obama by when reporting always addressing him as mr. obama and notice the phrase is written in small letters because that's the indication it gives when they say it. Why is it so hard to give President Obama the respect he earned and deserves. The mess that the nation is in is not his fault he inherited that mess from someone else and we all should have common sense to know it won't go away in one hundred days nor three hundred sixty -five days. You guys need to lighten up. President Obama did'nt put himself in office clearly Caucasians as well as African-American's and many others are now on the same page their wallets are not as large as they once were. They can't spend the way they use to. We are now barring the same pain. The people chose President Obama obviously he was the best person for the job. So, I say to the Caucasian Republicans and the Afrrican-American Republicans give the man a break because we must remember it was the leadership of the Republicans that landed us in this awful "MESS" in the first place. |

February 4th, 2009 6:35 pm ET Dear AC, (copy of my comment to Cafferty) That happened at a time when both my husband and I were each due to get a raise. We had 4 school age children and we eagerly were waiting for our raises as it would have made a huge difference in our already modest incomes. Our raises amounted to no more than five and 10 cents per hour but as we were living very frugally, a raise meant everything. Now, why aren't the "concerned" Republicans making negative references to that "edict" from their own party? |

February 4th, 2009 6:40 pm ET If Bush had done just half of what President Obama has done in his first 2 weeks in office, perhaps we would not be in the crisis we are in now! Where was the whistle blower in the past 8 years? I have seen him 4 times today on the news. |

February 4th, 2009 6:47 pm ET Our president is with us as we face the next great depression and I believe in him and our country. Every American must make himself valuable in some unique way to our common good! February 4th, 2009 6:49 pm ET The intimate interview setting ... was interesting. It is strange to see a relaxed, cool, & confident President sitting in office. Have been so use to Bush & instantly turning the channel after awhile, it was a bit of encouragement to see you & the President toe to toe. Thanks for a good interview, as much as they can be in 10 min. & thanks for giving us some insights as well. Although I tend not to trust such news coverage, at least you kept it interesting. |

February 4th, 2009 6:50 pm ET Keeping them Honest .... honestly(?) "I’ve got to own up to my mistake, which is that ultimately it’s important for this administration to send a message that there aren’t two sets of rules. You know, one for prominent people and one for ordinary folks who have to pay their taxes." - President Obama quoted in the NY Times Does this mean Geithner and Rangel don't get a pass? Since the mainstream media played a huge role in outcome of the elections; what objective part are you playing in making sure they are really keeping their words and walking with integrity? It really looks like CNN is giving this government a huge pass. How will CNN prove that it is the "Most Trusted News Source"? |

February 4th, 2009 7:12 pm ET Anderson, Thank you for so quickly confronting the President on his extremely worrisome Cabinet choices. February 4th, 2009 7:21 pm ET It's funny what we notice about others isn't it? I'm still trying to get used to the transparency of this new President. It's refreshing and very sociologically healthy. After all the years of dysfunction at the hands of Bush it's hard to get used to the new way of doing things at the White House. The President talks to the American people with a reasonable degree of humility befitting a leader. How weird! I was in an Oval Office copy at the Reagan Library once. I don't think it was true to size-I think it was 1/2 or 3/4 size or something like that. It's not a huge space but the rest of the house is great, or so I've heard! |

February 4th, 2009 7:22 pm ET Dear Anderson, Please, would you and all the rest leave Obama alone about the cigarettes? It's embarrassing to him and could lose him respect in some quarters. Right now a green card applicant have to wait 4-5 years to become a citizen to apply for spouse. People who're married before green card application they don't have any problem. I wish our new president will change this rule and people who applied for green card and married after they'll able to apply for spouse and bring them here , don't have tow ait long to get citizenship . |

February 4th, 2009 7:39 pm ET I have been a long time fan of yours and CNN in general, but your interview increased my admiration of you and President Obama exponentially. Your conversation with him seemed natural, and you asked the precise questions that I believe ordinary folks would inquire. The genuine honesty and sincerity President Obama displayed reinforced why I supported him so strongly as a candidate. Congratulations for another job well done. |

February 4th, 2009 7:54 pm ET Anderson, Excellent job as always. Winterize home. ok idea. what about improving very large buildings. The amount of energy to cool and heat large building is out of this world. The hydro-carbons from the refrigerants in the cooling system are terrible to the environment. If we want jobs now: Engineers and designers investigate building conditions; design systems that are energy efficient; construction teams make the changes; manfacturing equipment to be installed. win-win. healthly buildings, jobs, help the environment.... this list of improvements and benefits could go on and on. |

February 4th, 2009 8:09 pm ET I hope President Obama prays at nights because it seem like many people are wishing him failure. I thank the Lord for him. At least, he knows how to own up to his mistakes. First Lady Michelle was right but I wish him no more mistakes. |

February 4th, 2009 8:33 pm ET Personally, I felt it was no need to apology; however, spring is just around the corner. It's time for spring house cleaning. If you know what I mean. That was interesting. I enjoyed the interview. "Oh my, Anderson, you interviewed the President!" Good job! The interview was calm and relaxed. I watched it over and over and over and over. February 4th, 2009 8:58 pm ET Hey Anderson I am an avid news fan; and I really appreciate you doing this interview. You letting President Barack Obama flow during this interview really shows the kind of journalist you are. You followed his lead and in return, that made the conversation very free and respectful. And even though the conversation was laid back, you got the answers the American people have been searching for and which they deserve. |

February 4th, 2009 9:34 pm ET Hello Anderson Cooper, President Obama looks back at historical events that helped the American people in times of crisis. What about the bonds that helped so much during wartime? Whenever there is a national disaster, many people step up and a higher order seems to take over. Maybe President Obama would sleep better, if he implemented a new "American Pie" sort of savings contribution/bond. If Americans had the opportunity to invest a small amount each month toward a bond (and donate a small fraction to the national deficit), it seems it would be a win win situation. The government would have money coming in- with time limits for the bonds to mature and a percentage as a fee to be donated/contributed. People, even the small guy, would have a sense of building toward a better future. I am living on a limited income, I would welcome the opportunity to save or invest , without having to put down a huge sum upfront., especially if it benefited my children. Heck, the government could even offer extra tax write-offs or maybe even matching funds after a substantial amount is saved. It seems everyone mentions spending, and I haven't heard anything about saving. We need to start somewhere- "brick by brick, my dear Romans". |

February 4th, 2009 9:37 pm ET AC, I need an answer to this important question. I am very close to purchasing a property (townhouse, primary residence) but I don't want to miss out on any stimulus help in the form of lower interest rates or tax breaks. What are congress and the Obama administration doing to make sure those of us that are in the process of purchasing don't stop the process due to fear of missing out? I realize that the tax break ($7,500 or $15,000) is applicable to 2009 returns but I'm not sure about the govt backed 4% fixed rate that was being proposed. I think many people would like to know the answer to this because, while all the bickering is going on in Washington on whether the package should cost $1 trillion or $800 billion, more and more consumers even those of us that are ready to purchase are getting nervous. Thanks much |

February 4th, 2009 9:57 pm ET Anderson, I would like to ask why it is that CNN and other news outlets are saying the Wells Fargo Las Vegas trip should not happen. the larg portion of the employees make well under 30,000 a year as low as 24,000. this is part of team members pay to have events simular to these. Today CNN was bragging that they made Wells Fargo cancel thier plans. What happened was a years worth of work was ripped out of the hands of alot of "little guyes" Why doesn't CNN and other news reporters investigate more before they report untrue things. in addition remember wells fago did not ask for or want the govt money. how then can they be done this way? Wells Fargo has been paying large returns to the tax payer on the money the Govt forced on Wells. |

February 4th, 2009 10:05 pm ET Hello everyone - So, is the President doing the right thing to limit the salaries of top executives at companies that get future government bailouts? And do you think he is on the right track with the stimulus plan? |

February 4th, 2009 10:12 pm ET Is this cap going into effect for the next set of recruits as CEO? They already might have committments though they are earning quiet a good take home pay. Does this mean all over there will be a slash in salary. If the CEO is given 500K as salary then the homes they are going to buy is also going to reduce – does this mean there will be a change in the cost of living? If the CEO is going to get 500K, what about the VP and especially for IT industry developers? |
|
| Miriam Sukanya |
February 4th, 2009 10:15 pm ET So, even CEO's will be able to afford only reasonable cost homes, so I am worried about the rest of hierarchy ? A normal upper-middle class can afford a 350K dollar home in the current salary range. So, does this mean the upper-middle class people will be able to buy only around 200K. I think 5 million sounds a max for all career oriented lines – as you gain experience your income is going to increase. We can leave entertainment/sports sector out of this as of now. But 500K doesnt make much of sense when we will gain experience as years pass by. |

February 4th, 2009 10:21 pm ET Anderson; Dare to Post this.... Why don't you keep yourself honest first and take your camera crew to Gaza and see the real Holocaust? It is so hypocritical to ask others to be honest. Go and witness how 1.5 million people live under embargo (air, land, sea even underground!) for 2 years with no way of getting their food and water only through tunnels and daily killings by Israel! On top of all that they are accused of smuggling to survive or even to defend themselves against the F16’s and phosphor and depleted uranium bombs. Let’s be honest first and show America what we are doing with our tax money before we make 1000 of Bin Ladens. Take a chance; you don’t seem that person who cares about money or losing a job, just be honest first before you demand it from others. Peace for all man. |

February 4th, 2009 10:22 pm ET I agree with salary cap for CEOs and top executives. The difference between the current salary of these executives and salary cap can be used to run payroll for those employees, who are on layoff lists. This may result in : 1. lower unemplyment numbers |

February 4th, 2009 10:23 pm ET Humble people are low on arrogance, but high on true confidence. When you are comfortable in your own shoes, it's easier to compromise, stay strong when you need to, and there's absolutely no reason to disrespect or degrade others. Catholic texts view humility as annexed to the cardinal virtue of temperance. If Obama has one virtue that is noticed by all it is his temperance. Anderson and Gergen both seem to share a fair amount of temperance and grace themselves. They both have other individualistic strengths as well.. but sharing a virtue, in healthy amount with Obama leads to a nice chemistry. Anderson and Obama do very well together. Honest and friendly but still cleanly professional. And Gergen seems to be able to get a good read on Obama and give great insights. |

February 4th, 2009 10:23 pm ET Anderson – saw your interview of President Obama yesterday; it was good! There was a level of comfort and humor between interviewer and interviewee which makes for a better flow of answers. It makes viewers feel as if we were there with you. February 4th, 2009 10:25 pm ET Interviews like yours open Obama up for much criticism, but on second reading reveal great courage......to take such strong leadership on a very controversial bill that can easily fail.......is risking a lot. It is refreshing and I hope CNN will reflect such risk in kind, not daily obsessing about trivia and scandal, but encouraging and exploring new ideas and ways of doing things that will move this country forward again. |

I am sure we can break the ice – I dont think there is a 'terrorist' in this world? Nobody is born a terrorist, nor a democrat , nor a republican. I guess situation has made them so – some where the communication link fell – The only way to resolve these issues is to talk to the boss – the leader of the team !!!! February 4th, 2009 11:13 pm ET There are two 2 things that were awe inspiring during your interview and one surprising. The two inspiring things are: one, how relaxed and flawless was President Obama. Two, he admitted mistake candidly. How often do you see that? February 4th, 2009 11:25 pm ET I think limiting the compensation that people are paid when their companies have had to come to us (since it is our money that is being used) is appropriate. All this talk about losing "top talent" seems ludicrous. If they were such "top talent" then why would their companies need the bail outs? They can't blame everything on the economy when many of their institutions were considered the foundations of the economy. Let them get off their corporate jets and stand in the unemployment line with many of their former employees. We are lucky in that both my husband and I work full time. We had to so we could send our children to college, make house payments, buy groceries, etc. It is time that the people making millions of dollars get in touch with the reality of where our economy and country really is! |

February 4th, 2009 11:46 pm ET The executive pay scheme by the Democrats demonstrates exactly why they haven't a clue about how prosperity is created in this country. The government creates no prosperity, they only take from one and give to another. Only private sector productivity – the manufacture and creation of goods will pull us out of this Jimmy Carter like malaise. Limiting pay in the private sector is lipstick on the government produced downturn. It achieves nothing and will probably be counterproductive -killing the golden goose. Do you think Barney Frank (of Fanny Mae fame) knows better how to run a large bank or do the directors and the executives there. Those banks would not be in such trouble if the feds had not threatened them for not loaning to the "POOR" then when they did and the loand defaulted once again the DEMS blame the banks for the poor judgement that was foisted upon them by legislation. |

February 5th, 2009 12:05 am ET Anderson & Ali, You're about to loose a loyal fan. If you splash pictures of Dick Kovacevich from Wells Fargo on 360 possibly you should get your facts correct first. When you place him next to the others and call it a bailout, you're also dead wrong. There is a distinction between the other banks and Wells Fargo. Other banks needed and asked the government for money, or those banks just failed. Wells Fargo tried to decline the funds the day all the chairman's and CEO's were asked to sit down with Hank Paulson in 2008 to take TARP money to ease the credit crisis. Dick stood up in that meeting and said "I don't need it and I don't want it". Hank gave him the God & country speech during that meeting and the rest is history. Wells Fargo didn't need the money – so much so – that they turned around and bought Wachovia with their own money. Then took Wachovia's bad debt, and bad loans off the hands of the treasury where it would have ended up. One could spin that and say Wells Fargo bailed out the treasury if there really was any bailout at all? You could also check to see that when the government gave Wells Fargo those forced funds for easing the countries credit crisis that it wasn't a "bailout". Wells Fargo was forced to issue 25 billion dollars in preferred stock with a 5% coupon and provide the US government with a 25 billion dollar equity position in their company. Wells Fargo has to pay the coupon payments to the treasury for money they didn't want. What about the Washington politicians wondering why more regulation with these banks wasn't done when funds were disbursed? It's called taking an equity position, and you own a piece of the company. If you buy a share of GE stock do you get to sit at headquarters and help run the company? Of course you can't have too much regulation with a fire sale of forced equity positions in public traded companies. This isn't a third world system. If financial institutes really needed the money to survive this crisis then limit the executives to a glass of water and a tooth pick until they get their houses in order, and make them work weekends as well. I'm keeping you honest Anderson & Ali, and when you decide for yourself that Wells Fargo is not one of the corrupt Wall Street crowd then you can apologize to me. Please do it by e-mail because I just changed the channel. I'm completely insulted by CNN, and I am one of your biggest fans. I started working for Wells Fargo in 1995, and if I thought I was wrong about what I just said than why am I not feeling ashamed that my company did something wrong and they should be accused? Why am I not worried and trying to find another company to work? If we are the type of company that you and others say we are, then why don't I feel the same as Lehman Brothers employees must have felt? I don't feel ashamed because of the truth. Why don't you ask Dick on your show and get your facts straight? You might just find one of the most patriotic companies in America. When you attack someone in my company and especially the chairmen who is forced to walk a fine line politically, a line I don't have to walk, then you're attacking me personally. Respectfully, Mark Rizzie |

February 5th, 2009 12:08 am ET Hello Anderson, I just want to say I am extremely impressed with the interview you had with Pres. Obama. Overall, I am impressed with the President's ability to take responsibility for his actions. It really shows what kind of man he is in the ethical and moral sense. It is time we got a President that can share and understand the pains of the average American people. I love his passion for the job and the sencerity he holds. Never have I seen a President crack down on big (irresponsible) companies and their actions the way he did. He is indeed the right man for the job and I'm proud to support him 150%. He gives me confidence to hang on through this dificult economic crisis and to continue dreaming and hoping! |

February 5th, 2009 12:15 am ET Where was all this concern for the economy when former President Bush was stealing our children and grandchildren's future? Was anybody in Washington paying attention to anything!!! Oh, but now it is finally coming out about all the GREED, misconduct, lack of integrity on our elected officials part and I am GLAD about it. These people who we have elected don't think that they have to abide by the laws that they create; but they think that WE must abide or go to jail. Has the senator from Alaska gone to jail yet? Probably not! You don't hear about him anymore. What about these CEOs who have lined their pocketbooks and offshore accounts with "bailout" monies from the American people. They should be FIRED instead of REWARDED for their criminal acts. And, where is Hank Paulsen now! Somewhere in the CARRIBEANS with all of those bigshot friends of his and former president Bush spending their payoff monies received with no strings attached. I pray that within these 100 days President Obama will have time to bring these FINANCIAL TERRORISTS to justice! |

February 5th, 2009 12:17 am ET Even the Nobel winner in Economics rejects the "stimulus by tax cuts" pushed by the Republicans. It is unreasonable to expect Pres. Obama to give concessions when all that is being offered is failed policy. BTW, how are Americans who are hurting most – the unemployed – supposed to benefit from a tax cut? We need to put people to work and invest in our future – investment in infrastructure, health, energy, and education is what this country needs. Also those tax cuts will increase the deficit big-time, and what will there be to show for it? My guess is they won't create many jobs or long-lasting value. |

February 5th, 2009 12:18 am ET I think that a $500,000 cap on executive pay is much too high in many cases. If a company needs taxpayer money to remain solvent, then its employees are working for the taxpayer and should be paid at the rate of government employees. |

February 5th, 2009 12:35 am ET We in America don't have to worry so much about outside terrorism; we need to focus on the FINANCIAL TERRORISM that our own people are committing against us, the less fortunate ones who try to do the right thing and pay our taxes and exert integrity in our daily activities. You would hope that those who sit in HIGH places would have HIGH integrity, but it is just the opposite. President Obama should not put a cap on these FINANCIAL TERRORISTS, but a striped suit for what they have done. This is only the beginning of the end for those who think themselves more highly than they ought to think. I would love to have the job that Ms Sillfer refused today. You see, it is going to take someone who really has had to oversee every penny in their own budget to buy a house, buy cars, raise 3 adult children and 2 grandchildren and remain honest in their civic obligations to our country and our government. RICH people just don't "GET IT!" But, they will one day! "It will be easier for a camel to go thru the eye of a needle than for a RICH man to get into heaven". So, they will eventually "get it". It's not impossible for them to get to heaven, but highly unlikely because their "GOD" is their financial portfolio, bank accounty, and their Congressional position. |

February 5th, 2009 12:54 am ET How is it that Dick Cheney is so sure that we are going to be under more attacks because President Obama is against human torture? He was probably just as sure about 9/11 as well! We didn't have war until he, Cheney, Rumsfeld and former President Bush came to the White House after all the illegal voting was done in 2000. Hmmm, something had to happen to take the minds of the American people off of the criminal activities of that time and well, 9/11 did it. We readily forgot about the crooked election and focused on something even more devastating. Hince, we were thrust into a time of fear, lies and eventually a war that never should have happened that has killed so many of our young men and women who deserved to live a little longer than they did. And yet, these terrorists of opportunity are allowed to just fly away, walk away and roll away without ever giving account of their deeds and efforts to bring America to their knees. For that, (bringing us to our KNEES and our NEEDS, I am truly grateful. We can begin to fight our way back to a great nation with honesty and integrity and Love for each other and for those in other countries who are far less fortunate than we are here in America. |

February 5th, 2009 1:22 am ET Having been elected President doesn't mean that he can elect to be WRONG. It IS business as usual. Most of this package does NOT create long lasting jobs and is just a liberal's way of getting the left wing trash they want. The CEO's of these companies should receive no more than $100,000.00 like the CEO of Japan Airlines. Once again, the Japanese set the example. |

February 5th, 2009 1:29 am ET For anyone in this country to be making millions a dollars a year is crazy. That is why we are in this mess now. The upper management is being paid more than the banks/major companies are bringing in a year. If everyone makine over $500,00 a year would get paid only that about in 2009, they would not need a stimulus package rom tax payer's money. Another thing who could possibly need that much money a year. It is the greed that has bought us to this point. |

February 5th, 2009 1:38 am ET PLease carry our voices to the president to stick ONLY to jobs creation. Do not let the stimulus package burns you, just like the TARP was a failure because it was rushed in. Make the stimulus package Lean & Clean . Stop this mascared of porc. You will not have another chance Mr. President |

February 5th, 2009 1:42 am ET "Whether You Say It or Not!" Following the inauguration of President Obama I have been shocked at the number of political television personalties and pundits alike who suddenly find it so difficult to refer to our President as such. Maybe it's the down home, personal manner in which he seems to speak to us that has relaxed us to the point where we feel like such "good buddies" that a single name or a mister suffices. I am not so reverent about politics myself but I do feel that a certain level of respect is due to the President of the United States. Specifically, referring to the President as such when you are reporting, editorializing or otherwise hawking his every move and hanging on his every word. For me, the "double whammy" occurred this week when I heard two of my favorite personalities refer to President Obama as Mr. Obama. One did so twice on consecutive shows/days. What's more ridiculous is that in the next segment a story was run about Dick Cheney and, sure enough, he received the "proper" reference, Vice President, oh well I can't even write it but you know what I mean. What's even more ridiculous than that is the two personalties (2 of my favorites??) I'm referring to are John Stewart and Anderson "AC 360" Cooper. Oh, well! I guess I'm gonna just hope for some change from Mr. O to get us out of this Bush....el! |

February 5th, 2009 2:11 am ET With all due respect to all the druggies of the world including Rush Limbaugh, Bill, and Shawn, I hope President Obama succeeds. He is the man chosen by our democratic system and it is indeed in the best interest of our country that he can put our country back on track. The track that we lost in the last 8 years of who we are, why we are and why we are because of who we are! |

February 5th, 2009 2:34 am ET Limiting salaries of the CEO's doesn't even begin to address the real problem. we should tie all compensations to top executives to company's profit. In small companies, bonuses are paid from profits not from loses. Congress should protect shareholders from this criminal behavior of public company's managements. Awarding bonuses when companies are loosing money is unethical and in an ethical society – would be nothing short of thievery. Elie Balas |

February 5th, 2009 2:37 am ET Sorry folks but this is the first time I have posted. I just had to let out my disgust and rage. Dick Cheney SHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUT UP! If you love your country -SHUT UP! SHUT UP BECAUSE ENOUGH ALREADY!!!!! SHUT UP! Anybody got a big shoe out there, one with metal in the toe-industrial variety? Send it airmail to Cheney. PLEASE. We voted. We won. Obama has his turn now. The majority of Americans voted against you Cheney. You were a giant failure. YOU ARE OUT NOW! SO SHUT ALREADY!!!!! I hope you end up in jail. How about we disappear YOU to some undisclosed location and you get no writ of habeus corpus and we torture you with all those acceptable methods to get you to SHUT UP! Totally valid approach under your morality. YOU wouldn't like it much WOULD you? Human rights only mean something when someone has taken yours away, right? Lord deliver us from evil . . . . . .. . I need to take a shower. What a slime ball. DOESN'T HE JUST MAKE YOU SHUTTER AND PUKE.? |

February 5th, 2009 2:50 am ET I think the interview was ok, The presidents lengthy responses are likey ment to limit the amount of questions. I wish Anderson could've asked why the banks are holding on to that money they were given. It seem like they're balancing their books and not giving out loans. I think if it seems that Obama allowed to much "pork" in this stimulus package its because he understands that the bill will be revised in the Senate. I have to give AC credit he consistantly relates a personable and impartial (as much so as cnn can be hahaha) interview of our newly elected president. We should take a step back and realize its a little over two weeks in and we'll be lucky if the recession is over in two years. We should all stay infomed and remember that all of our elected officals have email adresses, if something (relavent) is on your mind you should let it be known. |

February 5th, 2009 3:06 am ET I have been following the whole presidential campaign and all i here is how to create more jobs. I only have one major question. How many politicians, judges, people in power are over the age of 65. I am sure if you were to tally it up over all 50 states their would be thousands and thousands. Wy is it the average American has to retire at 65 and yet there seems to be a different standard for all the above mentioned. How many jobs could you create by letting new younger people replace them. It just seems there's always a double stand when it comes to politicians and people in government. Yours Truly |

February 5th, 2009 5:06 am ET I always enjoy seeing President Obama whenever I can. Mr. Anderson your interview with the President was insightful, however I find your interviewing techniques to be very irritating. I maybe wrong in what I am about to say, but I sense that you are very jealous of President Obama. Most of your questions were designed to put the President down. You constantly referred to him as appearing "weak", etc. I have watched you interact with President Obama prior to him winning the presidency and you were rude and disrespectful then as well. Mr. Anderson, stop being so jealous and pray for our new leader. |
