Today there are confirmation hearings for members of President-Elect Obama’s cabinet: Arne Duncan (Education), Steven Chu (Energy), Shaun Donovan (HUD) and Peter Orzag (OMB director). Last but not least, Hillary Clinton’s confirmation hearing will be the most interesting to watch today.

She is expected to tell the Senate that if confirmed as Secretary of State, her goal will include “a renewal of American leadership and revitalization of diplomacy” according to her peeps. Overall it is expected to be a smooth confirmation process, but Congress has lingering questions regarding donors to former President Bill Clinton’s foundation and his int’l activities.

Also, given the situation in the Middle East, there could be questions on this crisis as well as other challenges facing the US from overseas and Senators may ask Hillary to lay out her thoughts/agenda with regard to our most pressing foreign policy challenges. We’ll be watching and bring you the highlights tonight!

P-E Obama also heads to Capitol Hill today to press his case with Senate Democrats over obtaining the remaining $350 billion from TARP, the financial industry bailout passed late last year.

Dems want more accountability this time around if they are to release the cash–and the money to go to struggling homeowners. What does Obama want to spend the $350 billion on? Where did the first-half go and what impact did it have? We’ll have these answers tonight.

Nic Robertson will be live from the border between Israel and Gaza where the fighting continues. Israeli tanks rolled into Gaza city from 2 directions overnight trying to stamp out Hamas militants, meanwhile UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is calling on both sides to “just stop” the fighting. Ban heads to the Middle East for meetings beginning tomorrow.

PS: One week from today, P-E Obama will be sworn in as President of the United States and you can watch the Inauguration with lap-top at hand, because our network is teaming up with facebook to provide coverage. Go to www.facebook.com/cnn to rsvp!

All this and more, see you tonight!

I truly hope the Dems hold firm with regard to how the next bail-out funds are going to be distributed and to where. The banks were told not to sit on the moeny and that’s what they’re doing.

Can’’s wait for next Tuesday!

Hillary will be a great Secretary of State. She has the wherewithall to do the job.

It looks like Israel is trying to put the finishing touches on Gaza city.

I think Candy Crowley said it best power shift.
I will be tuning in to CNN for the inauguration
before and after. There is so much to know.
Where to go ? What to do to move around DC ?
It is my hope that CNN will provide as much
coverage of the events leading up to and during
as well as after the inauguration. For the first
time in my life I will bear witness to living history.
