Senate Democrats may vote on a potential WH request for the 2nd half of the financial bailout money: $350 billion worth. If President Bush submits a request authorizing the release of these funds and Congress agrees, the money would be available 15 days later and therefore fall into P-E Obama’s term which begins in 8 days.

P-E Obama has told Congress that he wants this money to help homeowners dealing with foreclosure and that it won’t just go to banks w/out assurances. Given how little accountability there’s been for the first half of this bailout money, Congress will need convincing. (and so will we, for that matter).

Today P-E Obama meets with Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon following a tradition starting from 1980 in which the incoming US President meets with our neighbor to “underscore the important US-Mexican relationship.” Candy Crowley will be following this meeting and all other P-E Obama news tonight.

President Bush holds his last press conference today. We are told “the President is looking forward to discussing the important events of the last 8 years as well as issues in the news.” We’ll give you the skinny tonight.

The UN’s special envoy to the Middle East Tony Blair says the framework for a cease-fire in Gaza is in place. Meanwhile, Israeli soldiers and Hamas militants continue fighting, and the Israeli military made its deepest entry into Gaza City yet this weekend.

Overnight they did pause for a 3 hours to allow Gaza residents to pick up humanitarian supplies according to the Israeli defense ministry. Israeli officials also said they are in their final days of the military operation but the fighting doesn’t seem to be letting up just yet. Nic Robertson will have the latest from the border.

A raid at a polygamist compound in British Columbia. Pre-trial hearings for polygamists accused of crimes in Texas. A trial date set in the case of a young girl alleged to have been married to polygamist leader Warren Jeffs. Many members of the fundamentalist Mormon breakaway group known as the FLDS think the government has a campaign to squash them. Gary Tuchman has this story tonight.

And if you don’t find the Morning Buzz tomorrow, it’s because I’ve decided I will transform into a polar bear to survive the coldest air of the season which is hitting the eastern half of the U.S. this week. Not that we needed to know what life is like in the Arctic Circle. Can spring come fast enough?

See u tonight!

Well I hope that they are better at keeping up with this $350 billion than they were with the first that was just squandered away it seems. Actually I hope that they hound whomever it will go to asking for all sorts of boundaries like they did the auto industry. And I would love to know how Obama is planning on giving some of that money to people that are getting foreclosed on. I don’t see how he can possibly do that. He will be bum rushed by people. And the ones that don’t get any money will go crazy about it doing only God knows what.

I hope that this Israel/Gaza conflict is over soon. Too many innocent people are being killed and hurt for nothing. They should have already agreed to the cease fire and continued working on a plan that both agrees with.

Crisis in Gaza:
When I analyze the current situation, I see that Israel has no regards for human life. To rob humans of hope and make it easier to die than live and when they fight back they are terrorists. Flying over cities and dropping bombs on civilians, though more sophisticated weapons, is a form of terrorism.
Hamas came into power with the support of Israel and the US. They supported corruption and eliminated hope amongst the Palestinians and then they asked for elections, and the people spoke. At that time instead of trying to bring Hamas leaders into the political arena we/USA decided to support a non-elected official and create a civil war. So democracy is only conveniant when we have the people we want in power.
To end the crisis the leadership that is needed does not yet exist, b/c it requires elimination of blind support and intense international intervention which might require international troops and allowing the people Palestinians and Israelis to be heard and through true democracy get rid of there recycled politicians, that waste precious human life to achieve ther political aspirations, after all it is election time in Israel.

Geez, cold and snowy here in Denver. It took me over an hour and a half to get to work. It usually takes me about 20 minutes. There wasn’t all that much snow, but the winds up by me were blizzard-strength.

I hope you warm up. We’re kind of used to it here, but the high winds can stop anytime.

Bush’s last speech – what a lovely ring that has to it. I guess if he concentrates on the important things he did right it will be a pretty short speech. If he concentrates on the things he did wrong then the speech may take us to inauguration day. I really kind of feel sorry for Bush – from reading several things you get the sense that he really wanted to accomplish great things for the country, the GOP, and the world – and it mostly went terribly wrong. It has to hurt to know that so much of the country can hardly wait until he goes out the door. Of course I feel sorrier for the country and the people because we have to suffer with the messes he left until Obama can clean it up. Perhaps history will judge Bush a little less harshly than we are judging him now, but I wouldn’t count on it.
