good evening everyone… breaking news out of the un tonite… and a very dangerous day in gaza.. we’ll focus on that tonite.. as well as the stimulus plan Obama talked about today… should be a good broadcast tonite.. let us know what you think.

anderson cooper   January 8th, 2009 9:59 pm ET

oh yeah, and David Gergen is back! And Candy Crowley is back from a well deserved break this week as well!

CurtisJo   January 8th, 2009 10:00 pm ET

Good evening Bloggers!

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   January 8th, 2009 10:01 pm ET

I’m glad Gergen and Crowley are here to give their treasured two cents worth.

Ashley - Hamlin, NY   January 8th, 2009 10:02 pm ET

I wish I could say good evening all…apparently it’s not that kind of a day.

Retirement homes? Schools? A war in any sense is a waste or resources. They never solve any thing. But a war that kills the elderly and children? That’s not a war – it’s murder.

Lori from IL   January 8th, 2009 10:02 pm ET

Hi Anderson, Erica and Fellow Bloggers!

Sad news on the war opening up on two fronts in Israel.

Yeah, David Gergen is back! I’ve missed him. Hope he was on a well deserved vacation.

Looking forward to tnight’s show.

Donna-Montreal Canada   January 8th, 2009 10:02 pm ET

Hello everyone

Vanessa, El Paso,TX   January 8th, 2009 10:02 pm ET

hey anderson good evening i saw the breaking news last night so sad about that

MaryBeth   January 8th, 2009 10:03 pm ET

Well, Anderson, let’s hope this ceasefire goes through and works. It would be great if the conflict could be solved by something more permanent than a ceasefire…

As for the stimulus plan…how is Obama going to get it through Congress? All these Dems who supported him are now opposing him. Too bad he can’t force it through like FDR did during the Depression.

Maureen T   January 8th, 2009 10:03 pm ET

Good evening Anderson…My heart breaks for those young children! Let there be peace soon!

Hannah Marner   January 8th, 2009 10:03 pm ET

Evening, all! Sounds like an interesting evening. It will be nice to have everyone back tonight.

Ah, Anderson. I have to love your odd punctuation. Even though the stickler in me laughs at it every time! ;)

holly, overland park , ks   January 8th, 2009 10:03 pm ET

evening bloggers and hiya AC! glad to see Candy and the Gerge back, now i know who can make some sense out of todays politics.
Its going to take a force way beyond any human to sort out Gaza.

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   January 8th, 2009 10:03 pm ET

But will a cease fire come now from both sides?

Pati Mc   January 8th, 2009 10:03 pm ET

Hey Anderson,

Sounds like a great program tonite. David and Candy, welcome back!! You guys were missed, but we know for certain that you deserved your time off. Hey, hey the gangs all here!

xtina, chicago IL   January 8th, 2009 10:03 pm ET

isn’t the “stimulus plan” the same as “let’s spend our way out of the recession”? Is that smart?

Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA   January 8th, 2009 10:03 pm ET

Hellooo Anderson, Erica and best bloggers!!!!
Ouch!!!! not day for me to see this 2 sides are now still war……… too hard to watch or to hear from Israel……. And Welcome back David and Candy!!!! we missed you!!!!

Dulcie - Denver   January 8th, 2009 10:03 pm ET

Excellent! I’m excited to see both David and Candy tonight.

News is still really scary all over. Thanks for keeping us updated

Jana, Indiana   January 8th, 2009 10:03 pm ET

Good evening Anderson. Things really look bad in Israel and Gaza.

Ashley - Hamlin, NY   January 8th, 2009 10:04 pm ET

Ah, Gergen and Crowley are back – so some good news. I also enjoy their discussions, ideas, and thoughts.

Kathy, Chicago   January 8th, 2009 10:04 pm ET

I met 2 women from Israel. We prayed for peace together.

Candace from Canada   January 8th, 2009 10:04 pm ET

Good Evening Anderson, Erica & Bloggers!

Welcome Back David Gergen! Happy New Year I hope you had a great vacation.

Lets hope this new year improves soon.

deborah s., oh   January 8th, 2009 10:04 pm ET

Good evening, Anderson.

It’s really good to have Candy & David back, & Anderson home in one piece.

And, it does look like it’s really getting dangerous in Gaza-it seems they are shooting rockets from everywhere!

leah   January 8th, 2009 10:05 pm ET

Once again Israel breaks a UN agreement that soldiers must give humanitarian aid to wounded civilians. Why didn’t Israel first go to the United Nations and get France and Egypt involved before they started this war?

Bea   January 8th, 2009 10:05 pm ET

Hey Anderson, and everyone! Welcome back all!

EJ (USA)   January 8th, 2009 10:05 pm ET

I thought we saw Candy yesterday.

MaryBeth   January 8th, 2009 10:05 pm ET

I’m so glad David and Candy are back. Missed David’s sound advice and insights.

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   January 8th, 2009 10:05 pm ET

Anderson, The conflict seems to be escalating at an alarming rate. If anyone has any ideas they had better put politics aside and speak up now.

Dorothy-CA   January 8th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

Hi Anderson and Bloggers

Looking forward to hear more on Obama. I liked what I’ve heard him say so far today, but missed bits and pieces. Looking forward to hearing more. I’m sure looking foward to him coming into office!

Rikki, Fargo, ND   January 8th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

Good Evening Anderson, Erica and bloggers! Welcome back Mr. Gergen! Its great to have you back.

Clarence Albuquerque   January 8th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

Prolonged misery… why didn’t they just give one million to each citizen?

xtina, chicago IL   January 8th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

Can anyone justify Hamas’ side? After all, they sponsor Islamic-fundamentalist terrorism. What am I missing?

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   January 8th, 2009 10:07 pm ET

Today I heard that Macy’s is closing 11 stores.

Mike, Syracuse NY   January 8th, 2009 10:07 pm ET

My concern isn’t doing too little, it’s just throwing money at it without careful thought where it needs to go.

Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA   January 8th, 2009 10:07 pm ET

But will a cease fire come now from both sides?

Yes! I think it will be happen soon as possible cease fire 2 sides.

MaryBeth   January 8th, 2009 10:07 pm ET

How is Obama going to get it through Congress? All these Dems who supported him are now opposing him. Too bad he can’t force it through like FDR did during the Depression.

deborah s., oh   January 8th, 2009 10:07 pm ET

I’m sorry–still don’t have that much faith in the un’s ability to solve or help anything. I hope I’m wrong.

Ashley - Hamlin, NY   January 8th, 2009 10:07 pm ET

You’d think that the UN would be taking a more active role – especially considering some of their schools have been hit.

Bea   January 8th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

Obama is going to have to use the bully pulpit.

Jacqueline, NY   January 8th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

Greetings all!

Hey, Anders, you’re back home! David and Candy are back. Yay! Welcome back all.

Perry   January 8th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

I want to ask him a question. How can one increase one’s credit score (FICO) in the current depressing environment?

Martina   January 8th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

Why are the Democrats bad mouthing Obama’s plan, no one else has one…they didnt say anything for eight years when Bush was running the show…now they are soooo vocal.

Rikki, Fargo, ND   January 8th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

Oh my goodness that was my Senator! Not very often you see a ND Senator being interviewed for anything.

This stimulus is not going to work. The last one didn’t work and this will not either.

xtina, chicago IL   January 8th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

I propose giving the Amer. people back more of their taxes now. I think we as individuals can better decide how to spend it/donate it than those goofs in Congress

Maureen T   January 8th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

I heard that Macy’s is closing the 11 stores. Makes you wonder which stores are next.

CurtisJo   January 8th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

I agree with the sentiment that the focus should absolutely be to make certain not one more person loses their job relative to the inaction of our elected leaders. Our leaders do not care about us as much as they care about themselves which is morally criminal.

Ashley - Hamlin, NY   January 8th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

xtina – both sides can be justified. There’s never just one side or story of a conflict. Hamas was democratically elected…and only a handful of nations recognize it as a terrorist group. Also, look at death tolls numbers…and Israel isn’t allowing ambulances to pick up the wounded. Both sides are trying to push into each other’s boundaries.

Lizzi Davis, Longview, Texas   January 8th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

Ugh. This whole thing going on makes me sick. The Israelies say they have reasons, and so does Hamas, but their reasons mean nothing to me when they kill women, children, elderly, and overall anyone who can’t fight for themselves. It’s just not right, no matter how much people try to justify it.

deborah s., oh   January 8th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

And the economy-my niece tells me Walgreen’s is ‘restructuring’. God only knows what that means.

Cecilia C   January 8th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

Oh my!! They have apparently reached an agreement for a cease fire!! can this be true? I just saw it on cnn international

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   January 8th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

Obama is going to have a long wait if he is waiting for Hamas to denounce violence!

Pati Mc   January 8th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

PE Obamas speech was awe inspiring. He made sensible points and had thoughtful solutions. He already sounds much more competent than what we have been dealing with IMHO.

Aw, there’s David Gergen! Hi David!!!! *waves*

Mandy   January 8th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

Hi gang! David G is a superstar!

xtina, chicago IL   January 8th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

Rikki in ND is right. Government spending won’t help us; only lessening the tax burden on all people and all businesses will solve this crunch

Jana; Louisiana   January 8th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

Gupta for Surgeon General, thats incredible!

Imani from Maryland   January 8th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

Oh noo…please not sorry Pahlin… just when i think shes out they pull her back in !

Clarence Albuquerque   January 8th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

Why would Sarah Palin even be concerned about what the current political bantering? She’s not set to be in the limelight for another 4 years.

Bea   January 8th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

Palin is so funny! She doesn’t want to say anything is sexism. But she’ll complain about everything else to keep herself in the news. Too funny!

David, Indiana   January 8th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

Hi Anderson, Erica, everyone. Sounds like that three hour window for humanitarian aid is not enough, obviously. Don’t armies have to attend to civilians who are wounded or in distress?

Lori from IL   January 8th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

To me it seems like Obama can’t win these days, not matter what he does or doesn’t do — critics on all sides. Let’s give the guy a chance. He’s not president yet.

I like the fact that he has a plan — whether all agree with it or not, at least he has a plan. And he’s talking to us and explaining himself. What a refreshing idea!

xtina, chicago IL   January 8th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

Mike is Syracuse is also right.. Quit throwing OUR money at problems; just give us back our money from the git-go

Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA   January 8th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

I thought we saw Candy yesterday.

EJ,
Candy was there yesterday……. of course.

Minou, New York City   January 8th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

I know a cease-fire is needed to get the people of Gaza humanitarian aid. But I doubt that either side will cease the fighting. Both are too stubborn.

CurtisJo   January 8th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

The only “class” issues pertinent to Sarah Palin are those related to her diatribe and treatment of some Americans as second class. Treating others as less than you are is low class.

holly, overland park , ks   January 8th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

i dont have any faith in the UN either. I think perhaps Egypt needs to be seriously involved seeing as the weapons for hammas are being brought in from there. I also dont think we need to recognize a terrorist group to negotiate a treaty, there has to be a better way.

Mike, Syracuse NY   January 8th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

This recession is not anywhere near as bad as the one under Carter. Unemployment, inflation ans interest rates are all lower. It seems there is a mob mentality and panic that is causing us to just throw money at it, rather than letting things take their course.

leah   January 8th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

PE Obama and his team doen’t expect to get everything they want. They are looking for a bipartisan bill and Congress is doing its job by reacting to it. It’s called democracy and working out differences and analyzing the components.

Perhaps the Congress could make a symbolic gesture by turning down their $5 000 raise especially those against giving some tax relief for middle class and working people no matter how small they think it is.

Rania in VA   January 8th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

I am sure the un would take more of an active role if the US didn’t block any criticism it may have of the IDF’s tactics

Imani from Maryland   January 8th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

Lizzi Davis I agree… in the end is it really that serious, i mean if you really think about it.

Anonymous Joe   January 8th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

It is a shame what Is happening in Gaza. I hope the conflict is resolved soon. The world has a way of working itself out.

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   January 8th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

I think PE Obama will have his hands full of know it alls in congress and elsewhere. I doubt whether anyone will have the 100 percent correct solution. And that includes Obama and his team.

Paula, Colorado   January 8th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

Anderson,
Hi! Though a Mid-East cease-fire doesn’t erase the conflict behind the damage already done, it is good news. I hope progress for a peaceful resolution continues, in spite of it all.

jim   January 8th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

Anderson
We need your voice if spending is 2/3 of the amer economy….. WE are deep trouble ….. PLEASE we need a shot in the arm… and not 500 dollars……. we need 5- 10k ASAP….. tarp like money

come on A/C

Brent Phillips   January 8th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

Ok here is the deal. No matter how bad Obama’s proposal may be. There is no way that It can be worse than the plans of the last 8 years. The reason he won the election is to move this country in another direction. I think that we should just give him a chance, and ANYTHING that he comes up with has to be better than Bush’s plan!!!!!!!!

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   January 8th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

Obama is not going to be able to make everyone happy in regards to the economy so the best thing he can do is to do what is best for the country and let the chips fall where they may.

Chris Sosa - Boston, MA   January 8th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

Hey, Anderson! I’m glad you have chosen to continue the focus on the Gaza situation as I’ve noticed the tone has become more relaxed from many sources in the last couple days, in spite of the fact that the war and suffering is still ongoing.

Anthony, Dallas   January 8th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

Hopefully the new stimulas will give something back to the people, not the corrupt corporations that are responsible for the mess we’re in.

Mike   January 8th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

I agree with the stimulus and President Elect Obama. I voted for him, and I feel that he is the only one who could possibly get us through this difficult time in America. At the same time, I am so skeptical that this is going to work because the economy seems so far gone.

Maureen T   January 8th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

Great to see David Gergen back on the show! His words of wisdom are always welcome!

xtina, chicago IL   January 8th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

Anyone can propose spending more of the American peoples’ money. How about cutting stupid gov’t programs and wasteful spending and cracking down on welfare fraud. Why is Obama afraid to say these things?

Dulcie - Denver   January 8th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

I think that Obama’s got the right idea, but I’m afraid it’s going to get bogged down in Congress for a long time. And I think it’s going to take much longer than anyone thinks for things to turn around in any meaningful way.

As far as Palin is concerned, is she just now realizing that she was participating in her own mocking? I guess she’s even more naive than I thought she was. Accusing others now, after the fact, just sounds like a lot of sour grapes.

jorge A.   January 8th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

its so good un can find a solution, welcome david gergen and your good comments. this is a good broadcast!

Ryan Wraight   January 8th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

I hope Lebonan knows that Israel has nukes and not afraid to use them. Lets hope they don’t have to use them.

sam   January 8th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

the un voted to stop the fighting in the middleast, yet israel have no respect for the whole world and keep killing the women and children.

Ken in NC   January 8th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

Good evening Anderson and Erica and all Bloggers. I think David gergen is right on the SPOT about PE Obama’s intentions.

It will be a big battle but we as a nation will have to pull our selves up out of this hole. No other country is going to come to our aid

Bea   January 8th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

Bloomberg said something important today: he said the money has to go to cities (and I’ll add towns) not to state level folks. He said it’s the cities who really fix and maintain things.

Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA   January 8th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

Gupta for Surgeon General, thats incredible!

Yes! Jana in Louisana…… He is great doctor!!!!! he will choose as soon as possible.

Candace from Canada   January 8th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

Anderson – great to see you back in the studio.
:)

Thomas Lusciatti   January 8th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

I just want to see the tax cuts on the wealthy repealed and I really don’t want the few hundred dollar tax credit.

Clyde   January 8th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

I agree that the initial financial “bailout” was nothing more than panic and throwing money at a problem, without thinking it through and with no controls on top of that.

Dave Hollister   January 8th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

The key to the stimulus is to start the process of creating the new energy economy so that there is a lasting effect on developing the manufacturing and execution infrastructure which will be the foundatrion of our economy in the future. It’s a solid investment…mush better than propping up out dated financial and industry models.

Clarence Albuquerque   January 8th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

Obama’s speech was effective because it was a thought out response…. as differentiated from an automatic shot from the hip. I don’t believe he has a silver bullet and should rely on the experts he has in the background.

Najia K.   January 8th, 2009 10:16 pm ET

I believe that both sides of the conflict in Gaza need to stop fighting. It is obvious that fighting for the last 60 years is not working. Both sides need to sit down and actually try to understand each other as they have done before Israel’s creation. They used to live in peace many years ago and both sides want this. As a Muslim, I understand the oppression that is felt by those in Palestine, however the acts of Hamas is against the laws of Islam. This is being an oppressor and not following the teachings of Prophet Muhammed. Both sides need to discuss and reach an agreement. All 3 faiths are involved and all 3 find the land equally as important. We need to settle our differences and fight for peace, not war.

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   January 8th, 2009 10:16 pm ET

No one should criticize what is proposed unless they have a better plan. If they don’t have a better plan they have no business complaining.

Joel Sparks, Indianapolis   January 8th, 2009 10:16 pm ET

Anderson –

I have rarely seen a mention about giving the money to the people, maybe twice tops from a public official. Is there something that I am missing, why isn’t this being talked about? To me it seems like giving people 5 – 10K (or more) would greatly improve the ecomony and resolve both banking and auto industries problems at the same time.

I and others need $$ to pay for the homes and cars that we now have. :)

Regards,

Joel

Daisy21   January 8th, 2009 10:16 pm ET

We should feel sorry for those poor children in Gaza. It’s unfortunate that the terrorist government their parent’s have chosen to elect have put them into such danger. It’s too bad that their leaders chose to put weapons in neighborhoods.

xtina, chicago IL   January 8th, 2009 10:16 pm ET

Sarah Palin is one of the few state executives who gave tax rebates to her people. She puts Obama to shame, financially speaking.

Peter Jacobson   January 8th, 2009 10:16 pm ET

Why not give the rich tax deduction on NEW second homes. puts builders, brokers, plumbers, etc to work.

Paige   January 8th, 2009 10:16 pm ET

Surgeon General would be awesome – but Dr Gupta would be giving up what I ,as doc in the trenches , consider a dream job at CNN

Cheryl , South Africa   January 8th, 2009 10:16 pm ET

Morning all, AC360 interrupted by news of cease-fire on CNN international. Lets hope this cease- fire is more than just a break to regroup for more fighting…which it normally is.

Ashley - Hamlin, NY   January 8th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

The problem with the individual stimulus package is that a lot of Americans are in debt. Serious debt. And unless they get a substantial amount of cash then they aren’t going to go out and go on a shopping spree. They’re going to pay off bills and store it away.

tonette   January 8th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

i really appreciate the way your pres.elect. acts early as possible to serve your country we from out of your world can see how ddcated he is but critics in your own country is killing that good cause he is trying to do…..something is wrong..

beth   January 8th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

great work!

can you speak to what other arab nations are doing to assist the Palestinians during this humanitarian disaster? I am refering to those countries that are most vocal about the Palestinian issue as an explanation for some of their own anti-west policies. Are they providing humanitarian support or trying to gain global support for a ceasefire?

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   January 8th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

I think the country has waited long enough for the economy to right itself, now it needs some serious intervention.

Mindy   January 8th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

@Mike Syracuse, NY –

Who gave you the idea that we are going to just throw money at the problem? If you listened to Obama’s speech, that’s not what he said, in fact he said precisely the opposite.

He wants specific conditions and accountability as to how and where this money is spent. It’s not like he is asking Congress to just give him a blank check and let him start throwing money all over the place. That’s ridiculous.

Every economic expert agrees that we need to spend our way out of this economic mess. Or would you prefer that we wait and do nothing and sink into another Great Depression?

leah   January 8th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

How can anyone who has driven over American roads and bridges say that rebuilding infrastructure is throwing away money?..or improving the grid, improving schools….let’s just bury our heads in the sands and hope that like magic everything will get better!!

Daisy21   January 8th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

If Anderson thinks it’s odd that Republicans are speaking up against deficit spending now, does he think it’s also odd that those who whined about deficit spending in the past are now all for it now that a Democrat has been elected?

Diana Howard   January 8th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

I love to watch your show and comments. I think David Gergen is the most level headed political ananlyst that I have heard. He does not show bias but looks at the facts and discusses them for in depth analysis. I also love all the rest of the show.

xtina, chicago IL   January 8th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

I wish people would focus on issues and not Sarah Palin’s personality. She is a leader, not a politician; she actually gave money BACK to the people. Shouldn’t all our leaders be doing what she’s doing?

Ryan   January 8th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

where will the trillion dollars come from?
china?
we better respect china!
china will own us? whatevah!

Bea   January 8th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

Lord, just think. We had a huge surplus when Clinton left office.

John Bergquist Newtown, CT   January 8th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

Something major needs to be done to invigorate the economy. We should not be concerned with the deficit at this moment in time.

Rose   January 8th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

Unfortunately I was at work today when the speech was shown on tv. I really wish I had been here to see what he had to say. Especially since by 2:30 I was called into the office and was told I was being laid of for an indefintie time. Is there a place where I can see just what his proposals were today. I really need to know what he has in store for me and my family and others especially in light of my recent situation.
I worked in a factory which is directly afected by housing it makes windows. I live in arural area and there are few things to do and no real future doing anything else. We are also losing one of the two grocery stores and one hardware store in the next 3 months they are being closed so things are not good. Any help as to where I can read what his plans were I would appreciate it.

Shandle Green   January 8th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

Personally, I think the way out of this mess is the way in. They need to very deliberately reset mortgages to reflect realistic values. Let’s face it people are paying for the roof over their head first – and it’s costing too much right now.

Clarence Albuquerque   January 8th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

You pay for all that is proposed by writing a check…. where is any of this money coming from?

Imani from Maryland   January 8th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

Anonymous Joe: I wish it could but this has essential been going on for so long that if it were going to work its self out it would have by now.

Cherise` from Gburg, PA   January 8th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

Yay the Gergenator is back!!
sorry Mr. Cooper but we need a Gergenator 360….he always makes so much sense….
Btw… why are they hatin on our Sanjay Gupta???

Today you can write off home loan interest. The Governement should consider going back to the day when all interest including credit card and car loan interest could be written off when you file your taxes. That would give the tax break to the consumer instead of the bank.

Candace from Canada   January 8th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

I think Dr. Gupta would be a great Surgeon General!

Alicia Myers   January 8th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

Our government needs to stop spending money overseas. Stimulate our economy by improving OUR lives. Reduce overhead. Everyday Obama announces another head appointment. Consolidate some of those offices.

john c, los angeles   January 8th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

first stop the rockets launches into isreal then peace can be demanded. the united states would require same.

leah   January 8th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

Unfortunately America is the one holding up the cease fire and we were the ones who went to war with Iraq when the UN was against it.

percy   January 8th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

I for one could use the tax cut.

Jeff   January 8th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

I support Israel and the fight against the terrorist group hamas. The Palestinian’s need to stand up and fight!

Ashley - Hamlin, NY   January 8th, 2009 10:20 pm ET

Wow Daisy, that’s quite possibly the coldest thing I’ve ever read. They’re children. They have no say where they are born or how they live. They are innocence. There is no excuse for their death. It’s disgusting.

MaryBeth   January 8th, 2009 10:20 pm ET

How could Gupta not have enough experience? He is so involved in what is going on in the country, health/wellness-wise….he could do so much as Surgeon General.

jorge A.   January 8th, 2009 10:20 pm ET

no so bad they get aresolution now. its so good un can find a solution, welcome david gergen and your good comments.

Lori from IL   January 8th, 2009 10:20 pm ET

Oh, how I’ve missed David Gergen sharing his wisdom. Glad you are back on the program tonight.

Ryan   January 8th, 2009 10:20 pm ET

i like dr, gupta!
i hope he doesnt ruin his career by taking the job!!!!

carl - new city, new york   January 8th, 2009 10:20 pm ET

The people of Gaza VOTED Hammas as their government body knowing the agenda of Hammas. Isreael MUST defend itself. When do you hold people accoutable for their actions instead of pointing fingers. The solution is simply, Hammas MUST stop attacking and killing, periord. Then there can be a start for a peaceful solution.

Matt   January 8th, 2009 10:20 pm ET

Lizzi …. what if Longview, texas was being bombarded from Mexico with over 4,000 rockets in the past year …. Hearing 4,000 sirens in the past year giving you 15 seconds to hide yourself and your children or potentially get struck from flying sharpnels…. it would make you absolutely paranoid, afraid and depressed. Do you have any idea what the israelis go through? how can they stop it peacefully?? The problem is that they can’t!!!

John Bergquist Newtown, CT   January 8th, 2009 10:20 pm ET

Sanjay Gupta will make a fabulous Surgeon General but I will miss him on CNN.

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   January 8th, 2009 10:20 pm ET

Sometimes it is good to have a fresh pair of eyes looking at the situation. I am sure that Sanjay is more than qualified.

Jennifer in NoVA   January 8th, 2009 10:20 pm ET

Hmm, Michael Moore or Sanjay Gupta… not even close!!! Good Luck Sanjay!

Kathy, Chicago   January 8th, 2009 10:20 pm ET

I hope Dr G is the Surgeon General. He will be awesome at the job. I thought with this election, no one needed experience.

Rikki, Fargo, ND   January 8th, 2009 10:21 pm ET

Who could possibly be against Dr. Gupta being the Surgeon General? He would be amazing at that or any job that he would take! And I can’t believe Anderson brought up the Michael Moore vs. Sanjay Gupta issue…it still makes me shake my head…but then again I really don’t like Michael Moore.

Clarence Albuquerque   January 8th, 2009 10:21 pm ET

If Bernie Maddof wants to feel safe from any angry public, I think the safest place would be in jail.

Minou, New York City   January 8th, 2009 10:21 pm ET

I don’t envy Dr Gupta, he’s got a difficult decision to make.

Paige   January 8th, 2009 10:21 pm ET

Palin has a brains problem – not a class problem people didnt seem to mind her lack of “class” just her obvious lack of classes

MARIO GONZALEZ   January 8th, 2009 10:21 pm ET

The goverment should cut the property taxes, that could help.

David Neutzler   January 8th, 2009 10:21 pm ET

Please bring back the program. The security council debate of the cease fire proposal isn’t “breaking news.”

Jeff   January 8th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

The stimulus package will not work! What will it stimulate?

niwat, Chicago   January 8th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

Hi Anderson and AC360 team,

My mother is very excited about P-E Obama’s inauguration. Well she lives in Bangkok, to hear she says that she anticipates good economic fortune under Obama’s presidency is a great sign.

Point well-put, David Gensen, one fo the issuse that P-E Obama put his emphasize even before he assumes his office is to fix the economy which I think it’s a domestic prority.

Howard Corbett, Winnipeg Canada   January 8th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

Israel has to be able to protect themselves. Since when is it right to let an enemy constantly bomb you just because they hide behind women and children.
Why doesn’t the media blame Hamas for all the killing in . How else can they be stopped?

holly, overland park , ks   January 8th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

Id like to see large energy{ahem, oil} companys perhaps pay a tax specifically designed for looking for alternative energy sources, and perhaps large drug companys pay a specific tax for a national health care, it would end up proffiting them in the end. welcome back DAVID! { and we are all rooting for Dr, Sanjay}

Bea   January 8th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

db said: …The Governement should consider going back to the day when all interest including credit card and car loan interest could be written off when you file your taxes. ….

@db: hey! I don’t want to pay the interest of folks who ran up debt irresponsibly! Let them get rid of some assets to pay it! It is still true that the majority of folks did not misuse their credit.

CurtisJo   January 8th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

I truly believe we haven’t hit bottom and their is more (maybe a bigger) storm to come, before the economic calm.

Maureen T   January 8th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

Anderson,
there’s obviously a double standard when it comes to Bernie Madoff. Apparently only he can make off with all that money and still be living in his fancy Manhattan apartment! Where is the justice there??

Ashley - Hamlin, NY   January 8th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

I sincerely hope that Dr. Gupta receives the position. I already trust the man and think he would make an excellent addition to the team.

xtina, chicago IL   January 8th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

Alicia has a point. What would happen if tomorrow we stopped foreign aid?

Bob frm WI   January 8th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

Mr. Obamas Economic plan is destined for failure. This is another missgi\uided attempt to stimulate and economy from all of the wrong directions. It must come from the consumer, up the food chain. 7 trillion into the banking system from the top down has failed. So has the 168 billion dollar package to the consumer. Pump a trillion directly to the consumer, equating to a check for 65oo or so for erveryone under 150k annual income. and you will get people caught up on mortgages, stop forclosures, build banking reserves, increase consumer confidence and restore credit markets. oh ya, you also stabilize the housing market.

too easy a solution for a polition to accept.

Chris Sosa - Boston, MA   January 8th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

Doesn’t have enough experience? I’m feeling a personal rivalry, not a legitimate complaint. Gupta would make an excellent surgeon general. To cite “lack of experience” seems ludicrous.

Lorenzo Caltagirone   January 8th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

The Obama economic stimulus plan needs to be agressive as he is proposing. With that said, his small tax rebate check idea didn’t work before with Bush and will not work now. Giving Americans a small allowance to spend money on things made in China is not going to help the economy.

Mike, Syracuse NY   January 8th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

@Mindy. The money needs to be targetted to fix the cause of the problem. This all started with subprime mortgages, yet I haven’t heard Obama say they should buy up the bad mortgages. That would free up banks to lend and people to borrow so they can buy capital goods like cars. It all starts with the mortgages. Getting an extra $20/week in paychecks won’t do squat except drive up the debt. Many Dems are saying that too!

Don, WA   January 8th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

I think Dr. Gupta is another good choice in the beginning by Obama.

Pati Mc   January 8th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

I cannot believe that Maddof is still free! What the heck is up with that? So he is free to wreak more havoc? Nice.

Rikki, Fargo, ND   January 8th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

Bernie Madoff needs to go to jail where he belongs.

Dinesh Bhojwani   January 8th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

My thoughts on Preseident Elect Obama’s plan is that unless American people are urged (by him) to be selfless and think what they can do for the country, nothing much will happen. People also have to be made to understand that it is a bad idea to spend money that they do not have (by using credit cards). Instead, people need to work hard, pray more, conserve energy, and educate their kids to do the same as well.

Sandra Robertson, Ga.   January 8th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

Good evening Anderson. Welcome back David and Candy. I hope the cease-fire really happens this time. Such senseless war and disregard for human lives. I hope and pray we will have better news in the days to come.

Michelle Brown   January 8th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

That boy in Oakland was face down on the ground, not floor Anderson, and handcuffed.

What the hell? Either the office made a horrible mistake which he should have immediately apoligzed for, or he lost his mind. Either way he was wrong. But no need to riot, what does that solve?

Madoff, funny, in the hood if you have a house and people are thought to be selling drugs they will tear up your property, but no one is going after Madoffs relatives which they know have benefitted from his criminal actions?

Ken in NC   January 8th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

If I had done what Madoff is accused of doing I would have been in jail so fast that the ink would not have had a chance to dry on the paperwork. But a rich guy is different I guess. Money talks. Even when it is someone elses money.

Ron Heigl   January 8th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

Here is an Idea to stimulate the economy, give every taxpayer $250,000,.
a coupon for $30,000 to be used to buy an only American made auto.
This would allow people to buy or save a home, invest in stocks, buy a car, send their children to college, buy the important things needed, and bring our economy back to where it should be.

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   January 8th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

If people are killing themselves over money their priorities are in the wrong place!

EJ (USA)   January 8th, 2009 10:25 pm ET

Apparently only he can make off with all that money and still be living in his fancy Manhattan apartment! Where is the justice there??

I’m available to house sit for him while he’s in jail.

Debbie   January 8th, 2009 10:25 pm ET

It amazes me that Madoff could do such a thing. It’s sad that his actions have caused people to take their lives because of all the money they have lost.

CurtisJo   January 8th, 2009 10:25 pm ET

I think these tragic suicides simply illustrate how messed-up society is for putting so much emphasis on money and not healthy realtionships. I am convinced wealthy, greedy people will die VERY lonely.

Isabel, RJ, Brazil   January 8th, 2009 10:25 pm ET

Anderson,
The bleak news from Gaza, and see the children crying and cann”ot do anything, left me sad. They seemed that cried for a hug. And I desired to give this hug! So hugged my son.
Very sad! It hurts the heart!

Alicia Myers   January 8th, 2009 10:25 pm ET

I believe the deficit and our current recession are directly related.

Clarence Albuquerque   January 8th, 2009 10:26 pm ET

Suicide is not a pleasant option but it is not a surprise in contrast to the financial stress of the depression. I believe it just aint an alternative.

Janine Phx, Az   January 8th, 2009 10:26 pm ET

Too many trusting in money, commit suicide. Obama..TOO inexperienced to be head of USA in this 200+ yr legacy of lunatic spending. Israel – needs prayer and USA help.

Minou, New York City   January 8th, 2009 10:26 pm ET

“our wealth defines who we are”..that’s especially true for men! ever been chatted up by “rich guy” and been told about his masion in bel air, yacht and 5 cars within the first 5 minutes of the conversation? men need to stop identifying themselves with their paychecks.

Jesse A. Segovia III, Lubbock, Texas   January 8th, 2009 10:26 pm ET

Very sad to see what tose cops did to that young man… Hope we get some justice out of this tragic scenario…..

Bea   January 8th, 2009 10:26 pm ET

I saw an interesting sign the other day: “better schools, lower taxes.” That sums up what’s wrong with some folks in this country. They want everything but they don’t want to pay for it.

xtina, chicago IL   January 8th, 2009 10:26 pm ET

Why don’t they cut the federal gasoline tax. What’s wrong with these people on Capitol Hill?

David, Indiana   January 8th, 2009 10:27 pm ET

Am I being told that 500, 1000 is not a useful amt of money? I do see Andy Serwer’s overall point.

Spending on infrastructure, long neglected, is solid, I think details can be worked out, that’s a huge business for businesses who win those contracts. I feel PE Obama is moving the government to look more toward the future, focusing on domestic priority. Re David Gergen’s point, Obama can lay the groundwork and perhaps is laying the groundwork for working on healthcare and energy efforts.

Erica and Andy 500.00 is about 1000 cans of cat foot isn’t it at 2 cans per dollar on sale.

earl   January 8th, 2009 10:27 pm ET

new to blogging, and a fan of anderson, and cindy! I will keep watching as I learn more about this.

bob   January 8th, 2009 10:27 pm ET

you guys are kidding right? only government can fix the economy by MORE spending? hhhheeeelllllllooooooo, how did we get here? hey anderson, why don’t you bring ron paul on to debate your economic “experts”? personally i hope obama gets everything he wants so come 2012 we can get real change.

Maria, Texas   January 8th, 2009 10:27 pm ET

Hi Anderson, Erica, Randi and bloggers and welcome back David and Candy:)

We as a nation are suffering financially, and those who aren’t are worried that their day is coming, so it is very hard for me to understand why anyone democrat, republican or independent will not give PE Obama’s stimulus plan a chance. Fighting for the sake of fighting or to remain caught in the old days are not what we want or need.

Tara-Round Lake, NY   January 8th, 2009 10:27 pm ET

Hi Anderson and Erica,
love your show. i am currently a nursing student. the electronic health care is a must, record will streamline client records and help prevent errors; it could also be one of our first steps towards health care reform.

Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA   January 8th, 2009 10:27 pm ET

Bernie Madoff needs to go to jail where he belongs.
I agree with you too Bernie Madoff will go back to jail, and he is so bad man to steal our money!

Ryan Wraight   January 8th, 2009 10:27 pm ET

Leabonan better be ready to go all the way cause israel always will. Oh being canadian i think the better thing for the U.S. is to be like canada and move more to the left on the political scale. It’s not a bad thing we have free health care

Ashley - Hamlin, NY   January 8th, 2009 10:27 pm ET

I don’t agree with the rioting.

However – if that had been my friend or family member who had been needlessly killed, I would probably have a different opinion.

It’s easy to think logically when you’re not emotionally involved.

Pati Mc   January 8th, 2009 10:27 pm ET

if we do get health care, Dr; Gupta will be great, but we aint never gonna be able to afford it!!!
i hope Dr Gupta, a brain dr, doesnt screw his career!!

obama and clinton LIE!!! WE CANT AFFORD GERGEN SAYS?
all that primary debate about healthcare, what a joke!
i hope one day americans study eastern religions and philosophy.
i am catholic, but i think asian philosophies make sense in some areas.
karma can bite you in the rear end, just when you least expect it!!!

healthcare and economy go hand in hand!!!
HA!

Ken in NC   January 8th, 2009 10:29 pm ET

Sarah Palin has to blame some one for her failed run so that she would not be seen as the reason for the failure.

Many love her but to many she was a good joke. To many, she is still a good joke. She is seen by many as a not so smart person but I see her as a person that is as smart as George Bush. Oh tht is the same as a not so smart person. She needs to go away and stay away.

deborah s., oh   January 8th, 2009 10:29 pm ET

David, it’s really great to have you back–our calm voice of reason–& someone who talks ‘plain language’.

And, Good Luck to Sanjay!—but what are we going to do without him?!

Mindy   January 8th, 2009 10:30 pm ET

@Mike –

That’s what that original 700 billion was supposed to do – buy up the bad mortgages. So what happened? Have the banks given any account of how they used these funds? Apparently, they decided NOT to use the money for its original purpose. So here we are, after a 700 billion bailout that did nothing. That’s because we made the mistake of just giving the banks, insurance companies and financial institutions a blank check. God only knows what they did with the money.

That’s why Obama still has a mess on his hands. So we start from square one all over again. I don’t know if any of that 700 billion has not yet been spent, but if any of it is left, then make the government require the banks to use it for what it was intended – to buy up the bad mortgages and free up credit.

I don’t need an extra $20 in my paycheck. I want the money to be put to good use to get this economy back on track.

xtina, chicago IL   January 8th, 2009 10:30 pm ET

Obama’s “plan” is not what he promised. CHANGE would be cutting spending, wouldn’t it?

Erica Hill
CNN

Bruce in NY   January 8th, 2009 10:30 pm ET

What is Obama thinking?

I’ll take as much ’stimulus’ as he’s willing to dish out but l’m not going to be SPENDING it. I don’t think anyone will.

I agree with the other blogger here, better make it $10K or $15K.

Jen   January 8th, 2009 10:30 pm ET

Will Palin ever stop making these silly excuses and “oh poor me, they’re picking on me” accusations? First she was constantly trying to pull the gender card, now it’s the class thing. Caroline Kennedy has been criticized plenty by the media for lack luster oratory skills, and for not talking to the media enough. The media has actually shown more ease criticizing Caroline’s speech patterns than Palin’s. They were constantly at pains with Palin to show they were criticizing the substance of her speech not the style of it. Also Palin herself pumped her speeches full of folksiness on purpose, and she was running for next in line to the president not senator.

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   January 8th, 2009 10:30 pm ET

The police shooting in Oakland is appalling. The police need to be held accountable for their actions.

Ashley - Hamlin, NY   January 8th, 2009 10:31 pm ET

Good evening Erica Hill. Great to see you on the blog as always.

Why is Palin even bringing up that horrid interview again? Is she THAT afraid that she’ll be forgotten?

Chris, Bay Area, CA   January 8th, 2009 10:31 pm ET

It’s pretty bad in Oakland with the riots. The news is reporting that the cop was reaching for his tazer, but regardless a defenseless man was killed. (BTW, they arrested the alleged killer of Chauncy Bailey, so at least they did one thing right.)

Samaria - Maryland   January 8th, 2009 10:31 pm ET

“Oh, no! I have only $600 million left out of my previous $12 billion. This is a nightmare straight from hell; whatever will I do?” I dunno, maybe look around and thank God you’re not on the street like so many hardworking folks who will earn far less in their entire lifetimes. *sigh* I pity the filthy rich man sometimes. Commiting suicide because your so much of money is gone? At least you have lifetimes’ worth of cash left!

Candace from Canada   January 8th, 2009 10:31 pm ET

So sad that people are taking their lives over the Madoff Ponzi scheme.
Greed corrupts everything it touches.

MaryBeth   January 8th, 2009 10:31 pm ET

An accidental shooting? how is it accidental when the kid is shot point blank? You can clearly see the cop pull his gun and shoot…there’s no “accidentally” about it.

Jesse A. Segovia III, Lubbock, Texas   January 8th, 2009 10:31 pm ET

Shouldn’t everyone just leave the Travolta family alone and let the Grieve in Peace…

Ken in NC   January 8th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

Yes Erica it is great to have David and you and Anderson all back safe and sound.

Clarence Albuquerque   January 8th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

AC, I don’t think the Technical difficulties could have come at a better time…. the Raw Video showed the un rehearsed response of citizens.

Lori from IL   January 8th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

While I understand non-violent protests and am thankful I live in a country that allows it, I have never understood rioting. What do these people hope to prove?

David Gergen   January 8th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

Hello everyone — Great to be back with the AC 360 team and to me, all of you are part of that team. Your comments are an important part of the conversation that Anderson opens every night.

And I am delighted that so many of you support Sanjay Gupta to be Surgeon General. I have known a number of the SGs of recent years, and the best of the lot was Everett Koop because he served as “the nation’s doctor”. In that role, he did a lot to help combat HIV-AIDs and this was during the Reagan years. Sanjay has all the credentials to be a young, dynamic “nation’s doctor” — he knows the field of medicine very well (he’s a neurosurgeon), he can break down and explain complicated facts in ways that everyone can understand, and he has a huge amount of credibility. Who better than Sanjay, for example, to lead a crusade against obesity among the young?

Jeff   January 8th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

The Israel and hamas war will never end as long as hamas wants Israel wiped off the map. It’s not about territory etc., it’s about iran and hamas wanting Israel destroyed!

Ted (New Jersey)   January 8th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

We struggle paying our mortgage, utilities, car payments, credit cards and the like, so how do we get on the list for a government bailout, we need a probable $290,000 and I can then spend at will to help our national economy ! Love your show.

CurtisJo   January 8th, 2009 10:33 pm ET

At this point, where only hearing veiled references to the role that the practice of Scientology might have played in the death of the Travolta’s son. I want to know the facts.

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   January 8th, 2009 10:33 pm ET

Minou, Men define themselves by their bank accounts for the same reason women define themselves by their beauty, because one attracts the other.

Rikki, Fargo, ND   January 8th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

It is a horrible thing that happened and that an unarmed man lost his life and I’m sure the family will win an wrongful death suit. But responding with riots doesn’t bring that man back.

Candace from Canada   January 8th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

That video is soo disturbing.

Riots are also not the way for the community to get their ‘justice’ .

Peter M   January 8th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

I admit that peace is needed in Gaza area but to negotiate with the terrorists Hamas is insane. Hamas must first recognize Israel and denounce terrorism. Only then will any insane government commit a truce with hamas

xtina, chicago IL   January 8th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

I second BRUCE IN NY’s comments. I’ll take the tax cut or rebate, but Im not going to buy something; won’t most people pay off debts?

Dorothy-CA   January 8th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

Come on – the officer didn’t know the difference between his tazer and a gun! That is just horrible and I hope the officer pays for it big time.

CAROLYN JONES   January 8th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

Police officers should be made to take a series of test on why they want to become a peacekeeper and made to take lie detector like the fed. secret serice. to see what type of hate they have and against whom. most are cowards if they did’nt have a gun and the authority to kill and get away with it. they would do a better job.

LisaL -Canada   January 8th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

anderson – glad you are back safe.

madoff’s actions are so far-reaching – it’s all relative, isn’t it – a rich man’s pain and anguish can be just as great as a poor man’s pain and anguish

and i don’t know what i’d do without a periodic “palin-pop” !!

Ken in NC   January 8th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

The shooting in the sub way station was so senseless and wrong even if accidental but the riots do not make it all right. This is not the way to do it. All the destruction taking palce there now is hurting innocent people that had nothing to do with the shooting.

EJ (USA)   January 8th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

Shouldn’t everyone just leave the Travolta family alone and let the Grieve in Peace…

Famous people are never going to be left alone – ever. That’s just how it is.

I think most people have offered support & condolences though.

I just don’t think its realistic to think that someone as famous as John Travolta is not going to be covered after such a tragedy. Then this wouldn’t be America!

deborah s., oh   January 8th, 2009 10:36 pm ET

Thank you, Lori. I have never understood ‘rioting’ either. What is to be gained from it?

Kwasi Opuni Afriyie, Toronto Canada   January 8th, 2009 10:36 pm ET

Yes the Hamas has brought what is happening upon themselves. This is Israel’s answer to the ongoing war. Can any one tell me what United Nations’ Resolutions the state of Israel has abided to.

Pati Mc   January 8th, 2009 10:36 pm ET

David, I wholeheartedly agree with your kind and just comments about Dr. Sanjay. What ain insightful choice Obama has made. I certainly hope that Dr. Gupta accepts. We need him!

Bea   January 8th, 2009 10:37 pm ET

Ah please. If you felt your community was under siege you would riot too.

MaryBeth   January 8th, 2009 10:37 pm ET

Why did we abstain from the UN vote?

Maureen T   January 8th, 2009 10:37 pm ET

The rioting is not the way to solve this problem! The police need to be accountable for what happened to that young man. I mean they shot him and he wasn’t armed, right??

Sheila Allen   January 8th, 2009 10:37 pm ET

I think Obama has obtained the best plan for a start. He has

John Bergquist Newtown, CT   January 8th, 2009 10:37 pm ET

I agree, David. Not only does Sanjay seem like a capable physician but also an excellent communicator as can be seen by his appearances on CNN.

Imani from Maryland   January 8th, 2009 10:37 pm ET

I know it should be a given but are those officers suspended?…we can assume nothing these days

CurtisJo   January 8th, 2009 10:37 pm ET

Thank you David Gergen. Everett Koop is the only Surgeon General I can recall in my lifetime that I felt was effective. I think the ability for the Surgeon General to communicate effectively with consumers is maybe the most important part of the job. I have always believed the Surgeon General should have a much higher profile with the American public.

Maria, Texas   January 8th, 2009 10:37 pm ET

David,
My friends and I all felt like a part of our family was chosen when we heard about Dr. Gupta. This is great news, please tell him that the Univ. of Houston gang 12 are rooting for him.

Brandi - bottom of the boot   January 8th, 2009 10:38 pm ET

so sad that the humanitarian aid is not able to get to those that need it.

bob   January 8th, 2009 10:38 pm ET

c’mon anderson, Israel would never hurt civilians or leave them to die.

Jesse A. Segovia III, Lubbock, Texas   January 8th, 2009 10:38 pm ET

How can you not tell the differance between a gun and a Taser. You can see in the Video that the Cop looks down at his holster when he reaches for “his gun”.

Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA   January 8th, 2009 10:38 pm ET

It is a horrible thing that happened and that an unarmed man lost his life and I’m sure the family will win an wrongful death suit. But responding with riots doesn’t bring that man back.

Yes! I agree with you…… that is so distrub to me that I am so mad at police mistook gun instead taser unarm black man! he will be charged or not.

Bonnie   January 8th, 2009 10:39 pm ET

How do you accidentally shoot your gun thinking it’s your tazor?

Pati Mc   January 8th, 2009 10:39 pm ET

Now Israel is bombing the aid convoys into Gaza? Did I hear Christiane correctly? That is just insane. This is so going from bad to worse. It is stunningly sad.

Mike, Syracuse NY   January 8th, 2009 10:39 pm ET

@Carolyn Jones, My duaghter is a police officer, and she was tested and well as received extensive training on when and how to esculate force as needed. Most cops ARE NOT cowards, or out for power. They are true public servants trying to do a tough job.

Mindy   January 8th, 2009 10:39 pm ET

I can’t believe it! Now Tom Cruise has to get into the act and start defending Scientology. Now this program has another excuse to continue to report on the death of Jett Travolta.

I have made my plea that the media, including this show, let this family grieve in peace. Just because Tom Cruise decides to shoot off his mouth again and make this more of an issue than it ever was, is not an excuse to cover a non event. Let it go.

deborah s., oh   January 8th, 2009 10:39 pm ET

You are absolutely correct, EJ! The Travolta family should be left alone to handle their enormous loss in private. It’s a horrible tradgedy when children die, but it does happen every day, & celebrities need their privacy too.

Bea   January 8th, 2009 10:40 pm ET

In some ways you can draw parallels between that rioting and what Israel is or Hamas (pick your side) are doing in Gaza. If you defend the latter, guess you have to understand the former.

Ashley - Hamlin, NY   January 8th, 2009 10:40 pm ET

Good to have you back Gergen! We all missed your eloquent (and lengthy ;) ) posts! I personally believe that Dr. Gupta has a remarkable resume. We should find you a post too! Anything you have your eye on?

Essabbar   January 8th, 2009 10:40 pm ET

terrorist groups keep using the Palestinain/Israeli issue to recruit more angry “Muslims” to attak the US because of its endless support for Israel.

Samaria - Maryland   January 8th, 2009 10:41 pm ET

Fighting and battle strategy aside, I don’t see any good of restricting humanitarian aid. Israel’s fighting Hamas, not the civilians.

And side note: that boy who appeared in the window beside Amapour, behind that cart – he was grinning happily, it looked like. I hope that it wasn’t fake, that there’s some happiness over there in all the smoke and fire.

I agree with Maureen T – rioting is not the way to go! Whatever happened to peaceful protesting? It’d make much more of a statement, I think! I’ll be praying for that man’s family…

xtina, chicago IL   January 8th, 2009 10:41 pm ET

Hear, hear Mike in Syracuse; I know many cops in Chicago, the vast majority are fine, fine men and women

Brandi - bottom of the boot   January 8th, 2009 10:42 pm ET

i am very disappointed to see so many stories trying to blame the Travolta’s for their sons death. it is a hard enough time for them without all the speculations.

they are loving parents, you can see it in the photos of them, they would never intentionally harm their child.

Mary H. St. Louis, MO   January 8th, 2009 10:42 pm ET

I second David’s comments regarding Sanjay but I will miss him on CNN.

Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA   January 8th, 2009 10:43 pm ET

Hellooo David G.
I am glad see your blog tonight!!!! I’m happy that Dr. Sanjay Gupta will be next General Surgeon with Obama!!! I am so excting for him. but I will miss Dr. Gupta……. :)

Naissa, South Texas   January 8th, 2009 10:43 pm ET

I never imagined that “the Holy Land” would get violent like this. It’s a shame. And what makes it even harder to see is the children that are being affected by all of this. It’s heartbreaking. I feel like a couch potatoe just sitting here watching what’s going on and not really being able to do anything about it.

Minou, New York City   January 8th, 2009 10:43 pm ET

Palin deserves to go on a permanent vacation.

Ryan Wraight   January 8th, 2009 10:43 pm ET

Israel hates the UN. never like them and i don’t think they care. and people like calling this a ‘Genicide’. Israel will NEVER genicide a race. Israel was made after the Holocaust.

Bea   January 8th, 2009 10:43 pm ET

Most cops are good folks which is why you have to smash the creeps.

Ashley - Hamlin, NY   January 8th, 2009 10:43 pm ET

Haha…the Couric/Palin interview always makes me chuckle. “The interview heard around the world…”

Jacqueline, NY   January 8th, 2009 10:43 pm ET

David,

Hi. Welcome back. I hope you had a very restful vacation.
I agree with you on Dr. Gupta for SG. If they don’t chose him, we’ll (CNN, AC 360 crew and viewers) just have to have a march on Washington.

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   January 8th, 2009 10:43 pm ET

Governor Palin will talk out as long as people listen. Like it or not many people in this country want to hear her. A huge amount of people voted for McCain, Palin. They deserve to listen to whoever they want.

db   January 8th, 2009 10:43 pm ET

Bea…. It wasn’t for people that ran up their credit cards. All interest was written off. I am a home owner. Why should interest on home loans be tax deductible and not other interest. It rewards the consumer for spending money. And stimulates the economy.

Maureen T   January 8th, 2009 10:44 pm ET

Sarah who?

Jana, Indiana   January 8th, 2009 10:44 pm ET

David, every thing you said about Sanjay Gupta is right on the money. He would make a great SG!

Candace from Canada   January 8th, 2009 10:44 pm ET

Haven’t we heard enough about Sarah Palin.

Her 15 minutes are up. Why do we keep bringin her back for another 5 minutes?

We do have much better things to discuss than how Sarah Palin feels the media was biased against her.

Deena   January 8th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

Obama has presented a rough overview of the stimulus economic package. It won’t be a package it will hopef ully be a dramatic change in how we do economics in Washington and at home.

Gaza… happy to hear the UN is moving forward on something.. but can’t stand seeing innocent people harmed or murdered .. esp children. Why do you think Condi Rice abstained from the vote repreesnting US? dg

Martina   January 8th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

Palin needs to be quiet and go sit down. Her 15 seconds of fame is over, get over it.

David Gergen   January 8th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

ps. should also have said thank you for your kind comments above… very warming… d

Max, Dallas, TX   January 8th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

“Not the center of the universe.”

Are you *kidding* me.
Is Palin twelve??

David, Indiana   January 8th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

The US abstaining and that UN resolution for a ceasefire passing is a huge signal that hostilities should stop.

Jacqueline, NY   January 8th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

@Jesse A. Segovia III, Lubbock, Texas

About the Travoltas — agreed!

EJ (USA)   January 8th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

Palin is so full of crap.

Ken in NC   January 8th, 2009 10:46 pm ET

Anderson, Gov. Palin has to blame someone for her own short commings. She even blames Obama for attacks on her family but she is the one that dragged her kids out on the campaign trail with her and always on stage with her. She is her own worst enemy.

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   January 8th, 2009 10:46 pm ET

Minou, New York City, Men define themselves by their bank accounts for the same reason women define themselves by their beauty, because one attracts the other.

holly, overland park , ks   January 8th, 2009 10:46 pm ET

arent we glad we elected some one besides palin now? :)

Ryan   January 8th, 2009 10:46 pm ET

perfect example!
why did the mainstream media make fun of the Palin’s names such as Tripp or Bristol, etc.

UNBELIEVABLE!
this from a media who fawns over people named Barack.
what are the Obama kids names? not really american sounding either!

what a joke!
double standards!
and im not that big a fan of Sarahs policies either!

Clarence Albuquerque   January 8th, 2009 10:46 pm ET

Her own words? Sarah , and Tina,,, and Katie…. Anderson, you set the microscopic lens so acutely.

Ryan Wraight   January 8th, 2009 10:46 pm ET

Wow how did america almos vote in a crazy women

Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA   January 8th, 2009 10:46 pm ET

I am tired of Sarah Palin listen again…… Please enough of Sarah!

John Bergquist Newtown, CT   January 8th, 2009 10:46 pm ET

Sarah Palin was simply not ready to be Vice President. She should not try to blame the press.

Ashley - Hamlin, NY   January 8th, 2009 10:46 pm ET

“You’re not the center of the universe?” Did Palin just say that about Couric? Wasn’t Palin the one who had a fit about sexism anytime anyone asked her an actual question?

(Nice shirt, Erica. Very nice color)

Brandi - bottom of the boot   January 8th, 2009 10:47 pm ET

seriously??? he wants his kidney back??? dude, get a grip, i guess you could call it a gift?

CurtisJo   January 8th, 2009 10:47 pm ET

Sarah Palin attacked first, thus she was attacked. In her own reference, she is a pit bull. She treats others with disrespect and that what she got in return. Boo, hoo, hoo.

Tina Fey is a comedian for God’s sake! GET OVER IT! Sarah Palin didn’t take her interview with Katie Couric seriously, so she wasn’t prepared. It’s no ones fault but her own!

Maureen T   January 8th, 2009 10:47 pm ET

Casey Anthony is right where she belongs! In jail! I hope she finally admits what she did and they lock her up and throw away the keys!

Brandi - bottom of the boot   January 8th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

anderson, you dont get it???? lol

both captions were great!

and the animals are adorable.

Dorothy-CA   January 8th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

The only class issue with Palin is that she has none.

Pati Mc   January 8th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

There is no way this man wants his kidney back! What is wrong with people?

Dean, Delmar NY   January 8th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

Sarah Palin is so incredibly naive. This is NY. No one gets treated with kid gloves by the press

Ashley - Hamlin, NY   January 8th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

I think Cooper could afford the white house replica….

Joe Terrogano   January 8th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

Sarah Palin has no responsibility for her poor performance during interviews. It was the reporter’s fault that she couldn’t produce coherent answers. Pathetic. No bright bulb there, just a challenged individual that was a a mistaken choice by McCain. Let’s move on, please.

Ryan   January 8th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

how about this:

if you stand on your tippy toes you can see Central Park too!

Bea   January 8th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

Tom Cruise and Sarah Palin. Now there is a pair!

xtina, chicago IL   January 8th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

Sorry Ken in NC; Palin is superior to Obama away when it comes to walking the walk. I live near Obama’s old district and he didn’t do ANYTHING to bring about change. Palin gave money back to the taxpayers. Which would you say is the better leader?

Rikki, Fargo, ND   January 8th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

He wants his kidney back? That is almost as immature as Sarah Palin’s responses in that last segment.

Pati Mc   January 8th, 2009 10:49 pm ET

Ha! Anderson, I heard about this talk show with Kathy and that she had your back. Aw! She is a great gal!

Deena   January 8th, 2009 10:49 pm ET

David Gergen… good to see you back. .. Erica.. good to see more of you.

Dulcie - Denver   January 8th, 2009 10:50 pm ET

I’m also very excited about Dr. Gupta being up for SG. I think he’s be fabulous and his vitality will be a welcome addition to Obama’s team.

It’s so difficult to watch the conflict in Israel and Gaza. Palestinians have wanted to destroy Israel since its inception and extremists of any stripe can be really difficult to control. Yet the human cost is a tragedy. I wish I had a solution but it’s way outside my experience.

Chris Sosa - Boston, MA   January 8th, 2009 10:50 pm ET

Ah, Palin. I personally hope she doesn’t go anywhere… she’s just wayyyyy too much fun. Haha.

Anyway, kidney back? And kidneys just happen to go for 1.5 million, so he’ll just settle for the money. Too kind of him, really.

Kuala   January 8th, 2009 10:50 pm ET

I’ve been riding the wave of exuberance since PE Obama’s victory, but that wave has crashed with what is going on in Oakland and Houston. Two police shootings on New Year’s Eve? Am I the only one who feels we need to deal with the issue of police brutality in America?

Teresa, OH   January 8th, 2009 10:50 pm ET

@ Ryan Wraight: January 8th, 2009 10:46 pm ET

“Wow how did america almos vote in a crazy women”….

Dwight D. Eisenhower said: “any man who wants to be president is either an egomaniac or CRAZY.”

We vote the crazies in all the time ; )

Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA   January 8th, 2009 10:50 pm ET

both captions were great!

and the animals are adorable.
I agree!!!! brandi!!!!!

Matt M   January 8th, 2009 10:50 pm ET

Why did you even bother with reporting on Palin – same old stuff… noth’in

Imani from Maryland   January 8th, 2009 10:51 pm ET

Somaria I agree in some ways but they are just trying to push the police into a trial and justice,

Jeff   January 8th, 2009 10:51 pm ET

He want’s his kidney back because his wife cheated on him, tell the whole story!

EJ (USA)   January 8th, 2009 10:51 pm ET

Just to clarify my position on the Travoltas – I don’t think its realistic to expect the media to ‘not’ cover the story. I think the Travoltas have received more prayers and condolences than negative stories. Either way – I think famous people are going to be covered throughout their triumphs and tragedies. Whether or not that is right – is up to each individual to decide.

Naissa, South Texas   January 8th, 2009 10:51 pm ET

I like Tom Cruise, despite the fact that half the population doesn’t.

Margie   January 8th, 2009 10:52 pm ET

Sarah sounds very bitter with each passing day…enough of the Palins – give them and especially us some peace!

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   January 8th, 2009 10:52 pm ET

I am sorry for the Travolta’s loss, but why is the media continuing to cover this story ad nauseam? Give the family some peace.

Minou, New York City   January 8th, 2009 10:52 pm ET

Like him or hate him, but Tom Cruise still is one of the most attractive men on the planet! He’s nearly 50.

Jana, Indiana   January 8th, 2009 10:53 pm ET

Can’t handle any more of Kathy Griffin.

Good night Anderson and all bloggers.

EJ (USA)   January 8th, 2009 10:53 pm ET

I like Tom Cruise, despite the fact that half the population doesn’t.

I think he still looks very good. A little bit thinner but still very nice looking.

Candace from Canada   January 8th, 2009 10:53 pm ET

Heartfelt Sympathy and Condolences to the Travolta Family.
This is a terrible tragedy for any family, made even harder under the media glare.

God Bless….

L Griffiths Australia   January 8th, 2009 10:53 pm ET

The man wants his kidney back from the wife that he’s now divorcing – how many words are there for spiteful?

Jacqueline, NY   January 8th, 2009 10:53 pm ET

Goodnight, Anderson-boo! :-) Glad you’re back home safe and sound. Goodnight All!

Brandi - bottom of the boot   January 8th, 2009 10:53 pm ET

k, ill give tom cruise kudos for that response, he was obviously at a loss for words and felt very badly for his friends.

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   January 8th, 2009 10:54 pm ET

Good night Anderson and Erica. I have no desire to see Griffin again.

Em   January 8th, 2009 10:54 pm ET

Good to have you back Mr Gergen. I agree with you 100% on Dr Gupta. The only SG I remember growing up is C Everett Koop. He was SG as I began college and did a fantastic job commuicating with us and informing us about the AIDS epidemic. In fact, he is probably the only SG I would recognize on sight. I think Sanjay would be an outstanding communicator and interact well with our youth. The best gift we can give our children is a healthy lifestyle. Good Luck Sanjay!

Deena   January 8th, 2009 10:54 pm ET

I feel badly that there is so much media attention around the Travolta tragedy and loss. Pricilla Presley made a point that when families lose someone they need space to mourn their loss. I hope CNN respects that need. dg

Maureen T   January 8th, 2009 10:54 pm ET

As a parent I cannot imagine how the Travoltas feel! Tom Cruise was very low key on the View and that’s the best way for this matter to play out. Again I truly hope the Travoltas are given their space to mourn in private!

EJ (USA)   January 8th, 2009 10:54 pm ET

Like him or hate him, but Tom Cruise still is one of the most attractive men on the planet! He’s nearly 50.

Oh really? I thought he was more 45ish. I guess I need to do some googling.

MaryBeth   January 8th, 2009 10:54 pm ET

Why are they saying Scientology doesn’t believe in medication? Jett was on anti-seizure meds for several years. This whole “no medicine’ thing is crap.

Karen   January 8th, 2009 10:55 pm ET

Oh I missed David’s comment on the SG choice. Where? Where? (Personally, the griping I hear both on Gupta and Panetta sound like sour grapes, or unease that they aren’t “one of the guys” ).

Kuala   January 8th, 2009 10:55 pm ET

Goodnight and keep the families of Oscar Grant, III and Robbie Toulan in your prayers. They are really dealing with a lot right now. Take care everyone.

Dulcie - Denver   January 8th, 2009 10:56 pm ET

The guy that wants his kidney back: Sounds like Shakespeare. Merchant of Venice perhaps? The guy who wanted his pound of flesh.

Wow. Some divorces are really nasty!

holly, overland park , ks   January 8th, 2009 10:56 pm ET

Goodnight all, thanks for a always great show!

Naissa, South Texas   January 8th, 2009 10:56 pm ET

EJ, I agree with you. It’s like he gets better looking with age.

Anyway, goodnight y’all. Take care and have a great day tomorrow.

Godnight Anderson and Erica. :)

Genevieve M, TX   January 8th, 2009 10:56 pm ET

Dr. Gupta is young physician and in the “prime earning years” of his career. If I was Dr. Gupta, I would consider the offer only if I could still continue my practice- otherwise, I think it would be a waste of education.

Jen   January 8th, 2009 10:56 pm ET

I think the suggestion from some people has been that Jett had autism, but Scientology does not accept autism as a condition. Does Scientology accept autism? Is there somebody who is not actually a member of the church who could give more objective information and be less motivated to misrepresent things if they might have endangered Jett?

CurtisJo   January 8th, 2009 10:56 pm ET

Good Night and thank you 360! (I’m eager to see if our earthquake we just had will hit the national news. My heart rate has finally recovered.)

Mike, Syracuse NY   January 8th, 2009 10:57 pm ET

David G. I agree with your comments on Koop. He was one of the few people who could talk and you could believe what he said. Walter Cronkite was another, and you too!

Brandi - bottom of the boot   January 8th, 2009 10:57 pm ET

goodnite all.

i love kathy! lol

xtina, chicago IL   January 8th, 2009 10:57 pm ET

why do people feel threatened by Sarah Palin’s success in Alaska? Wouldn’t we WANT someone in Washington who actually gives money back to the taxpayer?

Pati Mc   January 8th, 2009 10:57 pm ET

Goodnite you guys! Anderson, David, Erica. Rest well.

Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA   January 8th, 2009 10:57 pm ET

Good night Anderson, Erica, David G, and best bloggers!!!!
Have a great night and Sleep tight!!!!
See you tomorrow night!!!!
Day of the shot with Kathy Griffin and Anderson on HNYE party……. so cute gal Kathy and so funny Anderson!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!! Kathy was best funny with Jimmy Kimmel!!!!! LOL!!!! that is so funny shot!!! :)

Ken in NC   January 8th, 2009 10:57 pm ET

Great show tonight Anderson and Erica. Good night and see all you Bloggers tomorrow night. Maybe Palin will be gone by then.

Ashley - Hamlin, NY   January 8th, 2009 10:57 pm ET

Haha, I loved the exchange with Griffin. She wouldn’t be Kathy if she wasn’t blunt. And that guy in the crowd deserved it.

The New Year’s Eve show rocked…and a box of wine and AC360 sounds phenomenal. Haha.

Good night all. Still glad you are all back…just hoping for Nic Robertson’s safety now!

Rikki, Fargo, ND   January 8th, 2009 10:58 pm ET

Enough Kathy Griffin!

Good night Anderson, Erica, David, and bloggers! Welcome back Mr. Gergen…its so great to have you back with us!

Another great show! Reiterating that CNN really is the best news channel around! Thanks guys! Have a great night!

Candace from Canada   January 8th, 2009 10:58 pm ET

Its been a great evening!

Lets hope the world calms down a bit overnight.

Take Care Everyone!

Tom Cruise is 46.

By the way, what has Kathy Griffin done with her hair since New Year’s Eve? I really liked it on New Year’s Eve. : ) She’s a trip.

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   January 8th, 2009 10:58 pm ET

Thursday’s Shot! Kathy’s family is in hiding from the unscripted moments? I guess they hide out quite often..Gotta love her..I toast her with a glass of boxed vino..Night all

Kathy is so funny–I love her Mom too.

@ Mike, Syracuse – I agree with your list, loved Cronkite; but I would add Anderson to it as well.
