Happy Monday and Happy Holiday to you!!!
Hope you have great weekend........

Peter Novi, Michigan   December 22nd, 2008 10:00 pm ET

WHO IS REALLY SUCKING THE ECONOMY DRY?

Would not putting back on a cap on Credit Card Interest go a long way in bailing out the ecionomy by making more dollars available to the consumers who drive the economy and less to the lenders who drag it down with thier unregulated lending?

The BANKS are ripping us ALL OFF!

Mary   December 22nd, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Hi, Anderson. Keep Erica's webcam mic on again tonight? We liked it.

Maureen T   December 22nd, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Good evening Anderson. I'm done shopping! I've scaled back a little bit though. How about you?

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   December 22nd, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Good Monday evening Anderson. My shopping is done and gift wrapped and now I'm working on the cookies. Thank the Lord for the 26th..I need the rest.

Ashley - Hamlin NY   December 22nd, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Online shopping is a certain godsend. Who wants to get involved with those crowds?

Rikki, Fargo, ND   December 22nd, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Good Evening Anderson, Erica and Bloggers! Happy Monday! I have all my shopping done...I've had it done for a while! I did do a little shopping though Christmas is going to be considerably less than previous years!

Megan Dresslar (Shoreline, WA)   December 22nd, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Yes, Anderson
I did shopping already.....

Tracey - Boston   December 22nd, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Good Evening.

Belinda   December 22nd, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Hi Anderson, no shopping for adults this year, only the children.

EJ (USA)   December 22nd, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Hi Anderson – I am so happy to see you tonight

Jolene, St. Joseph, MI   December 22nd, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Hello Anderson and bloggers: Oh, looking forward to Vick's dog update. Sounds like a good ending to a very bad story.

X-mas shopping is all done and even wrapped! But, I still have cooking and baking to do....

Monica Chapman - Milford,CT   December 22nd, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Good evening bloggers! Anderson, that "don't be a little, girly vice president" cracked me up!

Rikki, Fargo, ND   December 22nd, 2008 10:03 pm ET

So are the banks not disclosing this because they aren't using the money in a way the the public would approve of? Are the ashamed of the way they are using the money?

EJ (USA)   December 22nd, 2008 10:03 pm ET

happy monday… does everyone have all their shopping done? is anyone actually shopping this year?

Yeah, I'm done. I'm a sucker for buying other people stuff although I don't have as much money this year. I almost got you something too.

Dulcie - Denver   December 22nd, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Hi Anderson!

I donated some money on behalf of my nephews and nothing else. Not even anything for myself. I finally got a job and that will have to be enough.

Ashley - Hamlin NY   December 22nd, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Question: If we bailout these banks, why didn't Congress make it a stipulation that the banks needed to show the media and congress where the money was going?

Isn't this what we bailed them out for? And how ironic is it that they are BANKS? Don't they expect me to use my money responsibily when I take out a loan?

Candace from Canada   December 22nd, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Good Evening Anderson, Erica and Bloggers!

happy Monday! :)

Shopping – I have effectively procrastinated and now will rush out tomorrow morning to prepare for the holidays.

What about you Anderson?

Linda32   December 22nd, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Hearing about the banks and their use of the money makes me angry. I called Citi last week about my student loans and was told that they only defer loans for 1 year for the life of the loan. My question is how is it that they are getting bailouts but do not have any workable solutions for people.

Ken in NC   December 22nd, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Good evening Anderson and Erica and all bloggers. It is a shame that now the robbers are the banks.

susan   December 22nd, 2008 10:05 pm ET

hi anderson.

mine is all done, although i have to admit that i didn't spend as much as last year. merry christmas to you!!

Peter Novi, Michigan   December 22nd, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Beat the DRUM slowley GM..........

How many Corporate Jets do the Banks own?
How many CEO's will get bonus's this year?
How many Millions have been spent having meetings at Posh resorts to discuss how to spend all that FREE money! AIM 200 + 40 Million so far!

NO ONE IS WATCHING THE BACK DOOR!

Jolene, St. Joseph, MI   December 22nd, 2008 10:06 pm ET

I've cut down this year on X-mas gifts also. Donating the money I would have spent to charities. They are such in need this year.

Maureen T   December 22nd, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Money's too tight to mention but not for these executives!!

Constance Maloney   December 22nd, 2008 10:06 pm ET

The lack of accountability for the banking money is truly atrocious, but it is no surprise. After all, this has been the problem all along.

All blame for lack of accountability for the loaned funds should be aimed at the powers that lent the money without requiring reporting and spending guidelines.

Kathie   December 22nd, 2008 10:06 pm ET

I'm shopping, but I don't have it all done. Some how I've spent more on my self. And today my car bit the dust – So I'll be car shopping the day after x-mas.

Daisy, Houston   December 22nd, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Maybe those execs need to take a hike.

Lori from IL   December 22nd, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Good evening Anderson, Erica and Fellow Bloggers.

Yes, the shopping is done! The gifts are wrapped, the cookies baked (however some need to be frosted, yet), and the candy made. A snowstorm is on it's way to the greater Chicagoland area - and the single digit temps are moving on - so it will be a white Christmas!

Yes, my family is shopping - doing our part to keep the economy moving.

Lisa L   December 22nd, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Dear Anderson,

Yes, I have all my shopping done.

You are doing a great job keeping me informed.

Sincerely,

Lisa L

YOLA   December 22nd, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Shopping done! If only I knew 2 years ago that I had so much frugality in my bones.

dave in connecticut   December 22nd, 2008 10:08 pm ET

hello everyone.
really looking forward to the followup on the dogs rescued from michael vick. 'been wondering what happended with them.

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   December 22nd, 2008 10:08 pm ET

It's a shame the bailout bandits are still grabbing a piece of the pie. They should be ashamed of themselves.

EJ (USA)   December 22nd, 2008 10:08 pm ET

My computer doesn't seem to play the videos or webcasts on CNN anymore. I guess its getting too slow and I'm not upgrading anytime soon. I'm sure Erica will do a great webcast.

Aleksandr   December 22nd, 2008 10:08 pm ET

I'm tired of listening to the media (and congress) prattling on about the excesses of private planes.

The fact of the matter is that private aviation is often far more cost and time effective that flying commercial. Was driving from Detroit to DC really a good use of the Big3 CEOs' time? Is wading through TSA "security" any better?

Candace from Canada   December 22nd, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Its downright disgusting that the banks have taken the money given to them and now don't think that they should have to account for it!

Connie Takach   December 22nd, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Let the executives of the bailout walk away. They expect accountability from their customers – why shouldn't they be accountable to their customers and us – the taxpayers. I think the banks are using the money to position themselves to own the properties that are being foreclosed on to become the largest landlords anyone has ever seen and it'll be on the backs of the taxpayers and the American dream will be lost.

jennifer   December 22nd, 2008 10:09 pm ET

hi all. my shopping is done, had to work lots of extra hours and cut my list way down.

the way the banks are refusing to disclose what they have done with the bailout money really disgusts me. makes me want to believe there is such a thing as karma.

happy holidays to all.

Beth, Troy, MI   December 22nd, 2008 10:09 pm ET

I cannot believe we have all the unemployment, economy problems, and we are still paying these top exec bankers, celebrities, sports figures the salaries they are receiving. There is something SO wrong with priorities in this country.

Chelsea   December 22nd, 2008 10:09 pm ET

What is this shopping you all speak of? I'm just giving people stuff I borrowed from them earlier in the year but forgot to give back.

David, Indiana   December 22nd, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Hi Anderson, Erica, everyone. If there are requirements to be complied with, then eventually won't the banks tell congress how they've spent the funds or where they're flowing?

Man last year there were buckets of money, how can that be?

Anderson I have shopping to do...

Erica I can't hear the webcast, even after the mic adjustment, maybe my computer

Megan Dresslar (Shoreline, WA)   December 22nd, 2008 10:09 pm ET

How about you?? Anderson.....
Did you shopping for christmas?????

Diana B.   December 22nd, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Anderson, What I have just seen is unbelievable. These people should be held accountable for taking billions while so many have sufferred. They are DESPICABLE!

jeff   December 22nd, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Well the banks choose not to be accountable. So hold off the rest until they come clean and pay us back with interest.

EJ (USA)   December 22nd, 2008 10:09 pm ET

I saw a picture of Obama on vacation without a shirt on – on some website today. Wowie wow.

Joe Terrogano   December 22nd, 2008 10:09 pm ET

It is time for the Department of Justice to step in and begin looking into what the banks did or are doing with the bail-out money. I am sure there are Federal laws or regulations that can be applied to this situation. And Congress needs to wake up! Money given away without accountability. How stupid can you get? Gee let's trust the banks that have ruined themselves!

Mike, Syracuse NY   December 22nd, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Hello Anderson. My shopping is done. Good thing too, it's been snowing for 3 days.

jacqueline ny   December 22nd, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Ken in NC December 22nd, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Good evening Anderson and Erica and all bloggers. It is a shame that now the robbers are the banks.

LOL! Ken, very funny. But the sad truth is, the banks have always been robbers, at least as far back as I can recall.

Maureen T   December 22nd, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Anderson,
great to see President Elect Obama trying to get some r and r. I'll bet Barack still has his ears to the ground!

Jolene, St. Joseph, MI   December 22nd, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Can you really compare how many resumes Bush got vs. Obama during their transitons when Obama's is during a year of high unemployment?

Philoan Tran - Houston   December 22nd, 2008 10:10 pm ET

A multi -cultural greeting to Anderson, Erica and all @ CNN: Merry Christmas, Joyeux Noel, Feliz Navidad and Chuc Mung Giang Sinh (Vietnamese).

Instead of financial bailout, it should be called a "trickle up plan" – ripping off from the middle class to give to the corporate executives.

Dave Kinsey   December 22nd, 2008 10:10 pm ET

At some point in time the American People will demand the heads of these heads of companies. The key here is make them toe the line like the normal working person. If they don't like it they can leave. If they were any good to begin with then we would not be in this position

Kathryn Heath   December 22nd, 2008 10:11 pm ET

I'll bet the victims of Katrina aren't buying the "we had to get the money out fast because it was an emergency" as an excuse for no accountability.

Chris   December 22nd, 2008 10:11 pm ET

I am so sick of the money these thieves are getting from us! I want my money back. Where is my bonus? I am too large to let fail. Where is my money??? This is disgusting. We should stop giving any money to this organization.

Anne   December 22nd, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Hi Cooper,
Hope your weekend was alright dispice of the bad weather.Nice to see you.Looking good

Rikki, Fargo, ND   December 22nd, 2008 10:11 pm ET

David...it isn't just you...I'm not getting an audio feed for the webcast either!

Rene Boucher   December 22nd, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Would it not of been better to give every amrican citizen a $1 million and make it only to pay off debts. It would have cost less than $700 billion and people would have there homes. The only catch would be the money could only pay off bills owed. No cash value.

Robin   December 22nd, 2008 10:11 pm ET

It seems like the bailout was just to pay these CEO's salaries, I say don't give these coorperations anymore money until we see some real changes.

Ashley - Hamlin NY   December 22nd, 2008 10:11 pm ET

@Aleksandr: All right, they are CEOs of MAJOR corporations. I can understand that they may want one private plane. But five? Last time I checked you can only use one jet at a time....

And it's kind of cocky and arrogant that they arrive to Congress with their hands out in after spending and wasting a bunch of money on their frivilous spending habits.

Dulcie - Denver   December 22nd, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Man, my bank (Wells Fargo) is absolutely killing my with fees. Every single month because of they way they've changed their policies. Add that to the fact that I got quite a bit lower salary than I was hoping for at my new job and it's going to be a struggle to make it.

And the banks just raked in the bailout money and the CEOs are still gettijng their huge salaries. I feel really... violated.

Cecilia C   December 22nd, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Hello Anderson and bloggers! First time poster here.

I have scaled down significantly on my shopping this year. I live in southamerica, where the economic crisis has been some what mild, but it has definitely made a difference on the hollidays. It has certainly been a slow holliday season.

Well, let's hope next year is better...

Mike Carlson   December 22nd, 2008 10:11 pm ET

KISS is the key ... Keep It Simple, Stupid! Economics is really simple. One person works an hour to make something. They then trade the result of that hour's work to get someone else's work product. Any left over is profit. If you have to pay more, you're in debt. When workers can't earn their hour of value, then they can't buy someone else's work output and the whole scaffolding of the economy collapses.

Amy Kinley, TN   December 22nd, 2008 10:11 pm ET

I'm finished, cut way back this year, only buying for my kids. Where I work, every year they give us a gift certificate for a turkey. This year, they apparently are cutting back too. The gift certificate was for "$12 toward the purchase of a turkey."

Bets   December 22nd, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Too bad the oversight or concern comes when this administration gave a blank check to Wall St and Wall St. kept spending our tax dollars like it was a horn of plenty.

So the main street mantra was just a bunch or smoke & mirrors.

So much for responsibility, accountability & transparency.

Suck Wall St. dry!!

Roslyn Rossein   December 22nd, 2008 10:11 pm ET

They should all be jaile for theft of our money and theft of services.

yasmeen   December 22nd, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Happy monday anderson cooper and everyone! nope no holiday shopping for me. This year is all about homemade presents

Joanne Tomarchio   December 22nd, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Does anyone suspect the same financial institutions needing a government bailout might be guilty of the same bogus accounting previously used by Enron? Instead of correcting those "accepted accounting principles" did financial institutions just continue cooking the books without thought of future consequences?

If Enron is the best example of the post-dot-com era's fund-drive mania, then are financial institutions (helped by the repeal of the Glass-Stegall Act) the newest and most critical example of
he free-market hypothesis gone very wrong?

It appears that non-regulated big business knows how to press the Ponzi-scheme button and they guarantee their success on it.

Maybe at the end of this crisis, wherever that may be, those who pay more attention to history rather than numbers might be better equipped to know what the future holds.

Reuven Bogoff   December 22nd, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Cap one took 3.5B and purchaed another bank and is sitting on the rest - the people have been screwed again

he auto compaines has to accoun for evey penny and they are trying to keep jobs and produce products

Let take the banks to task -

Umesh Jain   December 22nd, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Any executive with any sense of self respect should not take a single penny in bonuses until they can be proud of the outcome that they help companies produce.

When an executive takes on bonuses with their companies tanking, the message is very clear – I believe that this is the best that I can get this company to and hence I deserve a bonus! Fire these executives as they can do nothing better than what they have achieved.

Ken   December 22nd, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Nothing new for executives. Remember Paulson was one a few years ago. The NJ Governor was also in the click. Taking money from friends is not a way to keep them friends. Small business owners do what they have to, cutting their own salaries, to keep their employees and the business in the black. Maybe it is time to get rid of the people at the top and let them run a small business.

Chris in CO   December 22nd, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Why do we even have to have the Fed? They are part of this problem too. They are culpable for this mess.

Margie   December 22nd, 2008 10:12 pm ET

This is so ridiculous that the banks were not required to account for what they did with taxpayers money. It appears the banks have taken advantage of the people (again). It's more unbelievable that the Treasury is so "laissez faire" about tracking $350B, now they're asking for the second half.

Silas Stephan, Cameron, NC   December 22nd, 2008 10:12 pm ET

I can swear like a sailor at how ticked off I am at our government and the lack of accountability they have had with the $810B bailout of the financial institutions. They should of yanked the money as soon as they heard they were still going on extravagant vacations and paying out huge bonuses. I've been unemployed for over a year, where is my bailout? I had to file for bankruptcy, so why shouldn't the automakers? Yes, throw some scare tatics that people won't buy from a bankrupt company...people still fly don't they!?

Unbelievable.

Joe D   December 22nd, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Hi Anderson,

Happy Holidays!

I love your Keeping Then Honest segment but in all honestly what good does it do to gripe about the banks and all their hoarding of OUR money? With no accountability expected of them by Congress why would we as citizens expecting it from them? Congress needs to be held accountable just as much as those they're giving money to.

Bill T in Missouri   December 22nd, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Shopping? What is this you speak of??

Mike Z.   December 22nd, 2008 10:13 pm ET

What is it going to take to wake up this country and start fighting back against this b.s.? Just love those banks, i'm late and get charged 35.00 they get 1 billion and don't have to payback anything. WHY??

James Curtis   December 22nd, 2008 10:13 pm ET

What kind of long-term effect does this have on every American? I thought that I heard at one time that the national debt is equivalent to 35K to every man, woman and child in the US. Is this true? How will we deal with that?

Michael McKelvey   December 22nd, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Hi Everyone,

Below is an accountability solution for the 21 banks in question

I wanted to start the conversation about creating the energy and effort to inspire all depositors banking with the 21 banks that received $1 Billion or more of the TARP to move their accounts immediately to local credit union or community banks that have do not operate in more than two states.

If 30 to 40 percent of the customers banking with the 21 banks would move their accounts immediately, the CEOs of these 21 banks would understand the importance of transparency – -

They should provide an audited report by Feb 1, 2009 and the audit report should be completed by the big four accounting firms who report to the new economic team and make the report public by Feb 15, 2009

Trust me, if 30 to 40 of the customer base move their deposits, the 21 banks will be called to DC immediately to meet with the new Administration.

Sharon   December 22nd, 2008 10:13 pm ET

What's going on with the banks is better than the best book ever written. I certainly hope the remaining money is denied Paulson and his band of merry men who's philosophy is take from the poor and give to the rich. The banks are screwing us every way they can – they put our national debt over the top, they won't lend money and if they do they want a ton of restrictions that they didn't have to provide and they are screwing around the credit cards, to the point that it also affects credit scores just by a reduction in credit line, often putting people near their limit which affects credit scores. I say no more to them. If the auto comapnies have 3 months to become viable the same should be for the financial sector.

Megan Dresslar (Shoreline, WA)   December 22nd, 2008 10:13 pm ET

I saw Obama in Honolulu Hawaii his vacation this morning on CNN TV!!!! I already touch Hawaii for my vacation last month!

Alan-Baltimore MD   December 22nd, 2008 10:13 pm ET

I am really tired of hearing how much banks executives took in salary&bonus and "what did they do with the first $350 billions bail-out?", etc ,etc.
Just give them all the $700 billions as one big bonus and let's please move on to some less painful subject!

Scott   December 22nd, 2008 10:13 pm ET

I just can't see why we are bailing out companies. Doesn't our government realize that people that live paycheck to paycheck can't afford to spend money. If we don't have money to spend, big business can't make any money. Lets bailout the public, not businesses !!

Jim,   December 22nd, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Shopping??? with what ? My good looks?????

Lalit   December 22nd, 2008 10:14 pm ET

ITS RIDICULOUS!!...after all the economy drama going....how can these biggies be so shameless and take away big share of the pie.......these biggies must be sacked first ...

Chris in CO   December 22nd, 2008 10:14 pm ET

I have an idea. Why don't they just zero out everyone's debt. Credit Cards, etc . and homeowners will not owe more than their homes are worth. That would be the best stimulus if they really wanted to solve the problem.

Mary H. St. Louis, MO   December 22nd, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Evening, AC, Erica, and 360 staff.

I can't believe those comments from the banks.... makes no sense at all.

It certainly looks like people are out shopping, at least the stores and parking lots are crowded. Maybe more looking than shopping. I did most of my shopping Friday and Saturday and there were some really good deals out there.

Paula, Colorado   December 22nd, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Anderson,
Hi! It's great to see you on tonight.
I'm about done shopping for Christmas, though am glad I started early–the cold and snow have really slowed things down–and other parts of the country have had much more severe weather than here.

John   December 22nd, 2008 10:14 pm ET

I'm usually not out spoken about politics, but Congress and the banks involved in the bailout is ripping off the public. No matter what Congress says, they could have put in conditions and required accountability of fund use. It seems to me that they put on a show for the public and help their bank buddies. I don't see any changes from all the rhetorics that we heard from the political parties in Washington. It's bunch of BULL. I don't like it, and I have most of the country on my side on this issue.

laura   December 22nd, 2008 10:14 pm ET

i am curious how many people stopped using credit cards since hearing about the TARP money given to the banks and are outraged with their use of it.....if people want banks to take them serious...then people should curb some of their credit card use...banks make majority of the money from people having huge credit balances...so we are the keepers of the future...

Tagen Howe   December 22nd, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Happy Monday to you too.

I did all my shopping at Bank Of America this year. I thought the gift of money was appropriate to give.

Bruce Smithwick   December 22nd, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Anderson, I was not happy to hear you say " They do not get it" referring to the CEO's who are still getting paid outrageous amounts of money for their failure. They are getting it! Lots of MONEY.

annie - Indianapolis, IN   December 22nd, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Hi Anderson and Erika,

No Christmas shopping this year.
And about bail-outs, who will bail us out? And why on earth this CEOs getting this much money? How much someone needs?
Anderson you have seen a lot in different coutries, sick kids and ...,I can't understand how these CEOs sleep at night when we have lot of people in need of food and ... here in US and in other countries.

Imani from Maryland   December 22nd, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Hello Everyone!!!!!!!

Ken in NC   December 22nd, 2008 10:15 pm ET

WOW Everybody is getting in line for BAILOUT money. Where can regular citizens go to get in the line. Seems like the ones that would be spending the money back into the system are being left out.

Don Daniel   December 22nd, 2008 10:15 pm ET

I have been a world news follower since I retired 5 years ago and I rarely heard of Chaney. Has he done anything? If so, WHAT has he done??

Maurice   December 22nd, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Honestly, what should we expect. You have the fox guarding the hen house. Honestly, the elected officials work for us (the American People). In theory, the work for whomever gives them the biggest check. If we did what our elected officals do, we all would be looking at serious prison time.

America wake-up. Not a white, black, brown, yellow, etc.-America, but a united America. I for one am tired of being treated like an abused spouse. We keep getting beat and continue to to show up. I am tired, tired, tired.

You have a business community that have the executives making decision were we all are asked to do more with less, but they are the ones taking more.

We have been tricked. Wake-up and use your common sense. This is not rocket science. It is robbery, plain and simple.

We kind of look like a 3rd World Country. You have 5% of the population treating 95% of the population as their personal doormat.

hi, everyone – and happy monday. my shopping is not done, and i'm not sure if i'll be able to pack it all in before work tomorrow. i'm going to try, though – no desire to finish it on xmas eve with all the other last-minute shoppers !

Bonnie   December 22nd, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Finished shopping–speaking of shopping–how do you get that $83 million job? I could run a bank into the ground and then ask for a bailout–and then try and scrape by on my $83 mil

Ingrid from Northern VA   December 22nd, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Hey everyone,
I did my shopping in Sierra Leone back in Oct. during a mission trip and considering they are the poorest country in the world, the dollar goes a long way!
After seeing people live off of less than $100 a YEAR over there, the excess of the corporate executives here is sickening!

Mary, RI   December 22nd, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Where on my income tax form can I claim the $750B loss?
Or will only by $350B?

if they can recieve all that bonuses
they should be held accountable
if they can be convicted on a crime then they should have all thier assests confiscated and sent to prision, not the country club type
this should send a thought to those that it is for the american people not thier grees

Joe Mirsky   December 22nd, 2008 10:15 pm ET

The usual argument for giving the CEO more money than anyone could ever spend is that he did great things for the company.

But this does not address the point at issue. The point is not how great the accomplishment, but what great accomplishments are worth.

Here’s the answer: nothing anybody ever did is worth that much money.

Do you think all the CEOs would quit if all they could get was a measly million a year? After all, they’re just salarymen. If they need that kind of money, let them go out and start their own businesses so they can keep it all. (Hint: it’s not so easy.)

Here’s a better incentive: succeed or be fired.

Hello..am I missing something here? We the taxpayers bail out the banks but it is still ok for them to jack up credit card interest rates and
add unreasonable late fees ..shouldn't it be a two way street? We help them they help us...and no accountability? How are we letting this happen?

Charles Lyday   December 22nd, 2008 10:16 pm ET

The Boards of Directors need to be held accountable for excessive compensation payments during times of poor corporate performance. Stockholders need to remove directors who are not exercising proper governance of the corporations.

Bill T in Missouri   December 22nd, 2008 10:16 pm ET

David Gergen...There will NEVER be confidence in the banking industry by the American people.

Ron/Kathy French   December 22nd, 2008 10:16 pm ET

You'v got to be kidding! Where is the bailout money being spent? How come our representatives aren't being held accountable for these "jokers" alias bankers on their money spending? Lawmakers think that the auto workers should take a pay cut-get real – there is no way the autoworkers pay package affects us like these huge bonus packages are. Quick get me a job with the major banks that received the bailout money.

Anderson good job keeping holding these banks accountable. I pay overdraft fees when I use what I don't in my account they need to tell the American people what they doing with the money.

kathy   December 22nd, 2008 10:16 pm ET

AC,

When is this going to stop on the hand outs1!! When are Americans going to start taking responsibility for their OWN actions!!! IF the big banks cant tell us where OUR money has gone........then lets ALL leave these banks and look for other FI's that are accountable; like the Credit Unions and small Community B.....lets then see what the BIG banks will do then ???

It's a real shame that most hardworking Americans have to work 12 to 15 hour days just to put food on the table, while the big bank executives don't even work 15 hours a month or a year for that matter and have all this glitz and glamour to show. They take our hard earned money right out our hands! It's absolutely ridiulous and its not fair to the actual backbones of this country, the ones that make up the highest percentage of working jobs in this country.

laura   December 22nd, 2008 10:16 pm ET

so instead of being outraged....people need to change their behavior...because those bad loans were given to people....

Paul F   December 22nd, 2008 10:16 pm ET

If you get a loan from a Bank you have to let them know exactly what you plan to do with the money now we the people loan them money and you cant get a peep from the bank on where the money went. something needs to happen about this

Tom Scheve   December 22nd, 2008 10:16 pm ET

I'm a small business man – 2.5 million in sales a year. Shown a profit by cutting back this year. My banks are squeezing me. Lowered our credit lines – giving me a song and dance. Saying that govt auditors are preventing them from risking loans.

Wells Fargo reduces my credit line while I had checks out on it and actually returned the checks before notifying me that the line had been reduced

Danny Guspie   December 22nd, 2008 10:16 pm ET

We do not have to be sheep. Collectively we could force accountability in the most simple and direct way: Hold back monthly payments; withhold taxes and let them sue us. Our defense is necessity: The need to protect our tax dollars to ensure that every penny is accounted for.

However the problem is no one will do that, so ultimately the responsibility lands on all our tired over taxed shoulders.

Surely in this day of interconnectedness, and if the President Elect can unite people on the internet and raise the amounts of money he did, surely there are some smart people out there who could create a similar website for us to organize ourselves.

You keep them accountable Anderson!

Regards,

Danny

Bonuses are voted by the stockholders of companies. Change stockholders to eliminate bonuses. Everyone who has a relationship with a bank who received bailout money, should be contacting them on a daily basis demanding where the money went. We, the taxpayers are entitled to know! Maybe they will eventually get the message.

erica   December 22nd, 2008 10:16 pm ET

one thing i would like to know is how much longer do we the people have to deal with the goverment giving our hard working money to companies that turn around and can even explain where the money is going to! how much more of our money do we have to lose!!

Jolene, St. Joseph, MI   December 22nd, 2008 10:17 pm ET

As usual, David Gergen is right on. We need confidence in order to get this economy going. How many people are feeling confident that our government/Congress knows what needs to be done?

Ken   December 22nd, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Anderson,

It's getting very frustrating / sad watching the beginning of what I think could be the long term collaps of the US. As a small business owner, I am loosing confidence in the capability of the adminstrations, both the current and in-coming, to resolve this mess. The financial institutions shouldn't get any more money. Let the government give the money back, directly, to the taxpayers. $350 billion...distributed across the population = $1,000,000.00 per person. The vast majority could pay our mortgages off and have money left over to pump back into the economy....

bill muir   December 22nd, 2008 10:17 pm ET

On January 20th, Barack Obama should change the rules for everyone that received bailout money with no strings attached.
They should all pay 10 percent interest and pay it all back to the new government over the next 5 years.
This badly needed money could be gifted back to develop Barack's new Education and Health plan for our Country.

EJ (USA)   December 22nd, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Ed Henry – I'm sure you're having such a hard time reporting from HAWAII! : )

Sejal   December 22nd, 2008 10:17 pm ET

So basically the banking loans were useless. How can the government get it so wrong?! The lack of oversight makes you wonder whether they(the govt) will ever get it right. There is absolutely no confidence that any of these loans will actually help us.

Tina L   December 22nd, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Hi Anderson

The financial institutions do get it. Not only are they receiving the profits from their high rates and fees they charge their customers, they have now figured out how to get all American's money.

Niwat, Lincoln Square, IL   December 22nd, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Hi Anderson and AC360 team,

I am very excited as this is my first time ever in the progam, in fact, as a blogger.
Well for the bail-out plan, out of 700 billion dollars pour in the financial sector, hopefully this year of 2008, it would not have to pay its top executive as much as last year, that would be definitely an object of ridicure, if there is not accountablity .
I would rather see this fund handle by President-elect Barack Obama to be part of his hew economic stimulus package.

Joan Hutchinson   December 22nd, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Let the ceo's of the banks just leave. They don't care about the lower employees that they have let go . Tell the banks that we (the US government) want our money back if they can not account for it.

Don, WA   December 22nd, 2008 10:17 pm ET

I have a hard time believing washington lawyers "overlooked" adding accountability clauses in their bank co. lendings.
The Hawaiian Diamond Head backdrop in Ed Henry's shot sure looks good on this freezing snowy day here!

Janine from PA.   December 22nd, 2008 10:17 pm ET

My shopping is done, I sent fruit and the company preprints the names of who I sent to last year, I approve or change the order write out a check, and voila! I am done.
Even though people have laughed at me I still think they should have sent all households at least $100,000 to $1mil rather then give it to the bankers who will obviously pay themselves. This way the working people would have money to buy merchandise, pay off or down their debts and take out loans, and save some, too. They could have put some limits on what to use it on so people don't end up bankrupt but give the money to us, the people.

Michael McKelvey   December 22nd, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Hi Everyone,

Below is an accountability solution

Trust me, if 30 to 40 percent of the customer base move their deposits, the 21 banks will be called to DC immediately to meet with the new Administration.

william akin   December 22nd, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Its very unfair and unbalanced Detroit was asking for a 15 billion dollar loan, and the Ceo's were humbled, over 300 billion was given to wall street with no accountability whatsoever !

Diane   December 22nd, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Are you kidding me?!! Frank Paulsen appeared before Congress insisting that he needed basically 'carte blanche' to get this money that was to help the banks and thus the American people. We, the taxpayers, are footing the bill for these yahoos who cried that they had to have this huge infusion of cash to stay afloat. But it was meant to help the troubled housing market. Yet none of it has gone there. Suddenly it was a bait & switch...it went to the banks. And now they are hoarding it, refusing to lend, and most diksgusting of all, failing to account for the funds. And acting as arrogantly as usual saying, basically, they don't gave t. So all they have done so far is take our money & run. Me, I'm trying to figure out if I can pay the electric bill or the phone bill & the cable bill! Where's my multi-million dollar bonus?!!

Mary B. Britton   December 22nd, 2008 10:18 pm ET

It is past time for the American people to insist on more accountability from our government officials. How 700 billion dollars can be haphazardly given to anyone without insisting on strict accountability is beyond reason.

My parents own two small businesses and make marginally less than 50k a year. Yet the bank suddenly started charging them for insane and weird service fees (such as "depositing too many checks" into an account).

I want my parents to tell the bank to take it off the tab that they stole from them as taxpayers!

To me this "lost" bailout money is business as usual. The gov't confronted them on their abuses but trusted them again with bailout funds!! Easy, you want bailout money, no raises or bonuses for employees making over 250k. Pay the bottom group of employees who are the muscle behind these banks the bonuses.

Robert   December 22nd, 2008 10:20 pm ET

If you really want the ecomony and employment to increase. You take the 350 billon dollars left and give to the 350 million people that pay taxes. Know, I do not know much about politics, but if this was done properly, everyboby would win. Not just the banks that still fly in there privet jets. The plan I have, is for the pay out to be in checks made out to the tax payers crediters. Think about it, People would pay off there houses and the banks would still get there bail out money and people would have more money to buy thinks for Christmas or what ever needed. It seems like no one really cares about the paying the bill.

Robert Schierburg   December 22nd, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Politely invite to CEO’s of the banks that accepted the 350 billion dollar bailout to a “stay” in the nearest federal prison. Reassure them that their stay will only be a long as it takes for their accountants to provide an accurately accounting of the money.

Good discussion about 700B rescue w/David Gergen and Joe Johns. I agree Wall Street bonuses have been huge for a long time, I do think there are some controls on those funds, haven't we bought stakes in some of these banks that might bring returns for the taxpayer

I feel PE Obama's stimulus is more an infrastructure refurbishing plan.

Yep, nice work on the beach there for Ed Henry, it's hard not to notice all the bikini clad beachgoers

As for credit cards, I curbed my credit card use extraordinarily by cutting them all up. Now, I'm wondering if I should get one again. Mind you, gift cards (a la Master or Visa) cover any necessary cc purchases, so maybe credit cards aren't the "necessity" they once were?

Kevin Miller   December 22nd, 2008 10:22 pm ET

I'm surprised that people are shocked that the CEOs of the Financial Institutions recently bailed out are taking big bonuses. Rember these guys have been getting rich of their employees as well as the customers and Stock Holders they are supposed to represent. To think that they would somehow have a conscience just because the tax payer is now footing the bill is just naive. The fact is that we have been sold out by the Bush Administration again since they are the ones that handed over the hard earned $$ of the tax payers to these CEOs with no oversight. We should not be surprised but we should be outraged!!!

tom bolte   December 22nd, 2008 10:22 pm ET

Why are these people getting all of this money without some kind of

Henry Paulson was one of the biggest beneficiary of these outrageous bonuses and many of these executives are his friends. It is foolish to believe that we can take a Wall Street lifer and expect him in 2 years to make an about face and control the excesses and greed he helped to perpetuate.

It is very difficult to have cofidence in the Washington and the economy with all these major unaccountable bailouts while not much is being done for the American homeowners who still see no end to losing their homes. Has the govt considered giving THEM a program that will directly affect their finances immediately! Who are they REALLY concerned about ?

If we can find a bank that hasn't taken any money from the TARP funds, we'll be moving our business accounts to that bank. Customer's control the economy, so it's time to put our money where it's appreciated, not scorned.

dan   December 22nd, 2008 10:24 pm ET

Hey Anderson, yeah, there will still be some shopping this year – not that much though.... Just wish there was some way to monitor those bailouts, e.g. task force, reports or federal investigations; I mean we really do need to know where all the money is going. I don't even think they've already invested it in boosting growth.... Maybe that slight positive spike in the economy when the bailout was introduced was just a placebo effect... Anyway, we need info on bank spending specs....

John D. Cusack   December 22nd, 2008 10:24 pm ET

Thanks for the chance to comment....regarding executive compensation for financial executives...nothing short of outrageous...the only thing less comprehensible is the feckless congress that apparently refuses to oversee tax dollar expenditure properly or is just not smart enough to do so...God help us!

Mike, Syracuse NY   December 22nd, 2008 10:24 pm ET

It's interesting that normally when Congress appropriates money, the Administration can't move more than $4 million without their approval. Yet for the bailout Congress appropriated $350 million with no controls at all.

Brandi - bottom of the boot   December 22nd, 2008 10:24 pm ET

The fact that anyone would bother too listen to Cheney is ludicrous. His comments of his "consequential role" just showcases his narcissism, obviously a prerequisite in the Bush Administration. The consequence of his role is to support a failed President and to ride this country into the ground. This is a creepy individual who helped to dismantle the Republican Party. Go back and crawl under the rock from which you emerged. Thank God you never had a chance to assume the Presidency. That would have trumped this recession in terms of an American tragedy.

My banks charges me to put my money in a savings account that only draws 1.75% interest. with me not being able to put much in, I get screwed. I would save more by buring it in my back yard

Gary   December 22nd, 2008 10:25 pm ET

We hear bailout, bailout. Has anyone said where the money went? Money does not just disappear. If someone has it don't it get put back in a bank or invested some where? If some one losses money some one else gains money.

Becca   December 22nd, 2008 10:25 pm ET

These CEOs and their henchmen have NO SHAME! I have a credit card with one of these banks, I have always paid on time, have a high FICO # and they raised my interest rate to 22%! And now they are wanting me to pay twice as much on my monthly payment than last month...what is going on with these banks. We the public are letting them get away with this...I think we ought to take the CEOs on a tour around the country in a wagon so we can all get a good look at them and maybe throw eggs at them. This is insane. I've been told by my employer we will not be getting raises next year and on top of that the managers have goals to out source at least 90% of new work, out source to other countries...and I work for a defense contractor! What are we Americans going to be left with?

I am very disappointed at President-Elect Obama's decision to include Rick Warren in any ceremony. I believe he is yet another pseudo-religious leader that is not interested in any inclusiveness except those that he might wish to be included. A phoney.

Joe Ravez   December 22nd, 2008 10:26 pm ET

In my opinion, Congress and Sec. Paulson were so utterly stupid and naive to give away billions without oversight that it boggles the imagination. That's the real outrage here. Not that the CEO's are giving themselves huge pay and bonuses. That's what they've always done. But for Paulson to ask for money without oversight is unbelievable, and for Congress to give the money away without oversight is outrageous. Why doesn't CNN call them on it,? Why don't you create a Most Deadly list for Congress and for Senators who voted for this giveaway. When I think about the amounts of money involved, I can't help but wonder how much each one of these politicians expect will be coming back to them as payback in the future. Come on CNN, follow the money trail, if you've got the courage of your convictions.

Terry   December 22nd, 2008 10:26 pm ET

Anderson,
I think it would have been better to give the billions to the American families whose total income is less than $100,000 per year. Debts would have been paid off – giving banks their money thereby helping them. Cars would have been bought helping the big three. This would have helped free up money in peoples budgets and people would be spending more for the holidays. Doing this would have helped everyone who really needed it and not made the super rich richer. I am not for free money. But if they are going to give it away, at least put it where it will help everyone.

Dulcie - Denver   December 22nd, 2008 10:26 pm ET

David Gergen,

You're right, we need confidence and yet all I see is the entire economy going up in flames. I started cutting way back on expenses last spring.

It's extremely hard to have much hope for an improvement in things either personally or as a nation. I've known for a long time that you can't pry money out of the hands of big-shots. Like Madoff, they'll just find another way to get it. Me, jaded? Just a little. I have high hopes for PE Obama's team.

robert fabio   December 22nd, 2008 10:26 pm ET

It is unacceptable not to have full accounting for every dollar of the financial bailout. Congress screwed up by not demanding the accounting and even if a Constitutional Amendment is required to enforce retroactive accounting, lets get it done!

On your story about banks refusing to account for what they did with the bailout money, shouldn't the question be "Why didn't Congress put in controls to ensure accountability to the public." Note I didn't say accountable to Congress, those clowns don't think they are accountable to anyone.

I just don't get this lack of accountability on all the bail out money. At one time I held a treasurer position in local government and taxpayer money required total accountability. Lots of reporting at the local, state and federal level. No accountability at the federal level is an astounding concept to me.

Wayne   December 22nd, 2008 10:30 pm ET

Congress needs to force the banks to lend and extend lines of credit to small businesses. My son and many of his friends who own small businesses are having their line of credit called even though they have made all their payments on time. If all these small businesses are eliminated, many more citizens will become unemployed. These people need help immediately.

When it comes to the "B" word (bonus) that Wall Street is so fond of, it time for Main Street to use the "B" word (boycott).

Those Americans who have done business with those intuitions that have so flagrantly spent the taxpayers' money need to move their business to banks who have been successful in their dealings.

Silas Stephan, Cameron, NC   December 22nd, 2008 10:30 pm ET

The sad part of this all, is they don't care, and nothing will be done, even with our comments and complaints. Even with the new congress moving in, I don't think it'll be enough to save this country. Brace yourself for the D word. This situation BTW, is not Bush's fault for once. This fault is all on the banks and the greedy CEOs that "run" them.

With the amount of these bailouts all the mortgages in America could have been paid off. That is what they are saying got us into this mess. But we still hear nothing about helping out the people that are on the hook for all these billions.

Bill T in Missouri   December 22nd, 2008 10:31 pm ET

If Warren thinks those flippant remarks would bring us flowing to his throng, he simply doesn't have a clue. We're gay, not stupid!

Glen Up North   December 22nd, 2008 10:31 pm ET

A Wii? That could be another thing at which news could look... Why is Nintendo unable to ship sufficient amounts of Wii... or are they really incapable of doing so? I've heard of (and seen) strange goings-on regarding what seems to be the most popular toy on the market this year. Absurd. Why not just _sell_ what people want to buy?

Mark   December 22nd, 2008 10:31 pm ET

AC,

I think that now is the time to stop using taxpayer dollars on services for those individuals that are in our country illegally. This is one way that we can save billions of taxpayer dollars, and reallocate those funds to be used as part of Obama's job creation plan.

Mike, Syracuse NY   December 22nd, 2008 10:31 pm ET

Rick Warren is more mainstream in what he thinks than the left who are complaining. Gay marriage has been voted down again and again. Warren is with the majority, and Obama agrees that gay marriage should not be legal.

Anderson cooper,I want to be like you. No shopping,In fact no christmas type celebration. I have got my exams tomorrow and i'm watching ac360 .

Flamur   December 22nd, 2008 10:31 pm ET

Good evening Anderson and Greetings from Canada!!!

My family and I are shopping....but we're very reserved this year. We can't help but notice the fear amongst citizens around us and in US. I was watching the show when you were showing harrendeous amounts of bonuses that bank CEOs have taken over the years.
I am disgusted by all this and I can't help but think of the lady you mentioned who sells eggs to pay the bills.
I am sorry but this is so wrong. Those people should be banned from public life.

Jacquelyn   December 22nd, 2008 10:31 pm ET

Don't be surprised when a "rules change" allows firms formed by TARP recipient corporations to do wholesale purchase of foreclosed and "troubled" properties with federal guarantees on the mortgages.

Apparently the TARP has done wonders in forclosure prevention in the Hamptons by subsidizing mortgage payments by Wall Street money people.

I have also begun to wonder if Mr. Cheney actually ran a shadow government...and that the president was merely a figurehead under the terms of their "special agreement." Cheney seems to claim to be apart from and not accountable to any branch of government whatsoever, which seems to be a claim of absolute immunity from compliance with all of our laws and immunity from all accountability.

If allowed to stand as precedent, Mr. Cheney's allegation will inevitably have tragic consequences in our national future.

Mary H. St. Louis, MO   December 22nd, 2008 10:31 pm ET

Where is Ed Henry? Ok, are you guys just wanting to taunt those of us in the grips of one of the coldest Decembers in years with these beautiful shots of the Ocean and blue sky.... Ok, please show him again, may be the only blue sky I see for a couple days.

Stephany   December 22nd, 2008 10:31 pm ET

The VP is not really part of the "executive" branch - he is the president pro tempore of the Senate and waits around to take over if the president is incapacitated. It's only during the Bush years did Cheney run the country.

John T. Ann Arbor, MI   December 22nd, 2008 10:32 pm ET

Hello Anderson, Erica, and fellow bloggers:
To answer your question Anderson, No. I have not even started shopping yet. My personal Holiday tradition is to go on x-mas eve, and get gift cards for all my family and friends.

This just re-affirms the fact that the Banks should not have been bailed out period. Then these Congressmen have the nerve/gall to give the Big three such a hard time over 15 Billion. It shows that Government as it is now, does not work.
No one should get a bailout, let the market work as it should, strong companies will survive and weak ones will die. It is not pleasant for workers of the companies that will not make it, but it is as it must be for the economy to correct itself. This socialism that is now being created will put this country in a worst position in the long run!

kathy mayo   December 22nd, 2008 10:32 pm ET

Thank you, Anderson, for continuing to pound on this story of corporate greed in the midst of the bailout. I'm outraged as well. Why do the folks who caused this massive catestrophe have to pay no price at all while others' lives are ruined. We should continue to demand that the bonuses be returned, on principle. When you do a friggin' horrible job, you shouldn't be rewarded! Thanks so much.

Michelle Brown   December 22nd, 2008 10:32 pm ET

Remember when the VP was the back up for the President? During that time it was logical for the VP to know what the President was doing. The President use to sort of take the VP under his/her wing. Now we act as though it is two seperate jobs, and something is strange wrong with the VP being in the room for the important meetings.

Oh yeah, I just wanted to say ,I am glad they bought Lay-a-way back. A great concept. Pay for it ,then take it home, no credit card debt, no finance charges, no huge fees and bs. Life was simple and good

dear anderson.
i'm not completely sure how things work in your democracy. however is it not true that the 700billion given to the financial sector was the taxpayers money. is there no way to track the money ,i mean if the treasury gives an institution taxpayers money,is there no paper or electronic trail. i for one would truly call that keeping them honest.

Zelyne   December 22nd, 2008 10:34 pm ET

I am very dissappointed with the congress. They can't seem to get off their hind legs and stand up for something. They let Bush-Chaney ram the Iraq war down our throats. They are just as responsible as Bush-Chaney. I and my family were marching in San Francisco 200,000 strong against this war so you can't say no one knew the right answer. Now they fall for the "give me the money or the sky will fall" Is it possible to get a Speaker of the House with guts and good sense?

Isn't it odd for a right-leaning pastor to even "approve of" civil unions? I was reading that some people in his church wanted him fired just for that.

I just think that there is an opportunity that some gay rights' groups may be missing with Rick Warren. To even get some more people on the right (who do not support CUs) to support civil unions I think would be a step forward.

When is Congress going to provide oversight for credit card interest rates. It is one matter if interest rates are directly related to the card-holders poor payment record. The banks certainly have a right to set standards as to who can receive a credit card and the limit on such a card. However, it appears that these days the banks and credit card companies are trying to replace lost mortgage and loan income on the backs of the credit card holders.

Herb Flower   December 22nd, 2008 10:35 pm ET

This bewilderment about where the bailout money went bewilders me. Here is how to fix it: 1. Bring the CEO's from the banks and put them before a Congressional Committee. 2. Ask them what they did with our money. 3. If they don't answer, charge them with contempt and haul them off to jail. 4. If that doesn't work bring in the next level of management until you get the answers.

Simple and cost effective

It's so weird to think of Cheney as one of the most powerful vp's...he so out of the spotlight most of the time you almost forget about him, until he shoots someone in the face. Biden and the entire cabinet will be so opposite, its going to be odd to have an in your face cabinet.

And ed is so sipping pina coladas off camera.

A 100 car pile up in Michigan is not unusual for the first major snow storm. I use to live in Detroit. We always said "That is how we get rid of some of the defective gene pool." You know the ones that fly by in a four wheel drive...you pass them later in the ditch with all four wheels up in the air.

hi anderson. shopping all done [except one more book for my mom]

had to weigh in on the egg issue.
money and other issues aside, i think the issue of having one's DNA floating around out there is interesting.

i don't know who i am. seriously. there is a double adoption in my family. and to boot, my adopted dad's name
got translated into something other than the original spelling.

in some respects, it doesn't bother me at all. but issues of "family health history", "religious roots" and even
"nationality" come up periodically – i have no answers.

i don't know how much information egg-donors pass on to their soon-to-be removed off-spring, but i would hope
that some basic information and family history is passed on.

Garey L. Bearden   December 22nd, 2008 10:36 pm ET

Accountability? From or by congress? This is a joke, right? Just one example of congressional accountability. Congress passed a law against hiring of illegal aliens, along with penalties. Then failed to fund enforcement. This was intentional.
When congress recongnizes a national mood that they do not wish to make a reality, they pass laws they never intend to enforce to quiet the public, and, fool us into believing they actually care.
Congress doesn't care about accountability. They make all the right noises, and then, it's business as usual.

I don't believe people. The women are complaining, the blacks, the gays, everyone who voted for Obama thinks he owes them something now. Sound like the gov. of Illinois. I voted for Obama because I think he is good for the country and I trust him to do the right thing. He owes me nothing, I chose to vote for him and he still has my support. I don't expect him to please me with all his decisions but if I knew it all I would have run for president. People get over it, he hasn't even taken office and already he is the pits because he isn't doing everything all the voters want done to suit them. and we profess to tell our children how to behave when we act worse than any child.

These executives will pay over 50,000 and bonuses and golden parachutes need to give that money back to the people to pay off the bailout they got. They need to sell their extravegent homes and get a decent, normal person, home or apartment and live there with affordable but stylish IKEA furniture. They need to shop at STOP and SHOP like the rest of us and search around for the lowest gas prices and trade in their cars for normal affordable cars that work for every day use. The money they make from putting their egos and life up for sale will go back to the people. The ones who are being pickpocketed so they can live the GOOD life. No MORE.

Oh Erica..I guess you won't be getting the starring role in Singing in the rain? Good try, but my ears are still ringing..

Candace from Canada   December 22nd, 2008 10:41 pm ET

Erica! Great Singing!

Anderson, you don't dance and don't sing.... what do you do? ;)

Maureen T   December 22nd, 2008 10:41 pm ET

So cool Erica! Rock on! :)

Brandi - bottom of the boot   December 22nd, 2008 10:41 pm ET

Great job Erica! lol

oh the memories! rofl

EJ (USA)   December 22nd, 2008 10:41 pm ET

Erica, you are not going to get Anderson to sing to a female oral contraceptive's commercial. LOL That's the only place I remember that song from. Is it a Yaz commercial? Or is it Seasonale?

David, Indiana   December 22nd, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Just to respond, I don't think Biden will get crowded out, but it's a good question.

I can hear you now Erica, sorry I missed that first webcast.

Hey looks like we might get some of that Chicago snow tonight.

Erica you need to start a band.

Jolene, St. Joseph, MI   December 22nd, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Erica: Anderson refuses to dance, did we actually expect him to sing? You go girl! Good job too!

Rikki, Fargo, ND   December 22nd, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Erica! You should sing for us more often...and get Anderson to step out of his box to sing and dance too!

Bonnie   December 22nd, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Good job Erica!! I hear American Idol calling!!!

Peter Alexander   December 22nd, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Sing it, Erica!

Chris Baratta   December 22nd, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Nice singing to Twisted Sister, Erica Hill.

Michelle Brown   December 22nd, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Sarah, Sarah go away, dont even bother to come back at a later day.

Remember that shoo fly u bother me statement??

No bail out of any other industry past the big 3, until u give the people of USA at least $10K to $25K per working adult.

charles   December 22nd, 2008 10:42 pm ET

holding treasury/banks accountable?

Jacqui Chan   December 22nd, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Ha that's true Anderson
Yeah there is clearly a reason the McCain camp kept her from the media wait until they ask her hard ?'s that are important ya know perhaps some more ?'s on foreign policy – I luv watching her talk in awkward circles...! I look 4ward to her 2012 run We can all use a laugh

Mary H. St. Louis, MO   December 22nd, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Ok, you can't sell your stocks and make any money... so sell your eggs...

Jo Ann, North Royalton   December 22nd, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Anderson, I am getting on the blog late tonight, but in answer to your question, no I am not finished shopping and it is bitter cold in the Greater Cleveland area!

Dale North   December 22nd, 2008 10:43 pm ET

Not only is Erica Hill good looking, and otherwise talented, she can sing. What a star !!

Ashley - Hamlin NY   December 22nd, 2008 10:43 pm ET

Online shopping Cooper. Online shopping.

Nothing is better than shopping in your underwear.

David Gergen   December 22nd, 2008 10:43 pm ET

Hello everyone - Even when we are getting into the holiday season - and, no, Anderson, haven't finished shopping yet - it is unbelievable and outrageous that the banks won't tell us where all that money went - and Washington never asked. Good for AC to keep a focus there... as the saying goes, if they can't see the light, make 'em feel the heat.

Meanwhile, that far western White House sure looked sweet for Ed Henry, didn't it? Were those golf clubs in front of him?

Orlando   December 22nd, 2008 10:43 pm ET

Rock on Erica Hill; Rock on!!!!!

Peter Novi, Michigan   December 22nd, 2008 10:43 pm ET

I wish I could lay a bunch of eggs!

Mike, Syracuse NY   December 22nd, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Erica, how about some Smoke on the Water next?

Brandi - bottom of the boot   December 22nd, 2008 10:44 pm ET

@anderson,

who doesnt? what makes you so special? lol

but you better get your mum something nice.

Jacqui Chan   December 22nd, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Erica's singing was great!
as much as we all love Anderson I think the world is a better place without his singing

Glen Up North   December 22nd, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Erica: ever thought of buying someone a christmas-gift pair of nail clippers to hide beneath his desk? ;)

Rikki, Fargo, ND   December 22nd, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Anderson...I'm with you! I hate shopping and I hate the gobs of people! I did all my shopping online!

EJ (USA)   December 22nd, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Anderson, you don’t dance and don’t sing…. what do you do?

He reports the news – and then he spends hours in airports waiting for the next flight so he can – report the news. It's a fun life Anderson lives.

Presley   December 22nd, 2008 10:44 pm ET

I watched Animal Planet's Top Ten Animal Moments of 2008 and the Michael Vick dogs were in the top ten. Christian The Lion was #1.

No shopping Anderson??? See, i love SHOPPING, one thing for them, two things for me. The sales are amazing.

Megan Dresslar (Shoreline, WA)   December 22nd, 2008 10:44 pm ET

That is good one!!! I love caption beat 360...... that is so funny one!!! LOL!
Guess what??? I check it is around 9 or 10 inches snow front yard in my house!!!

Matt - Austin, TX   December 22nd, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Does anyone else ever LOVE to watch AC and EH banter in a funny and uncomfortable way?! It cracks me up almost nightly LOL thanks for the entertainment AC ;-)

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   December 22nd, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Although I realize that these women may be doing a service for someone who really wants a child, it still seems like selling a baby to me.

Dawn from Alaska   December 22nd, 2008 10:45 pm ET

All this is why I don't believe in God. But I bet if you asked any of those defrauding us, they'd say they did believe. Much as politicians who pretend they believe but then their actions speak louder than words. All
this tho is about as confusing as that flight map. Whoa, lots of planes. It's amazing that an air controller can make sense of and direct all these planes and equally amazing that there isn't a money controller who can understand and control the bailout.

Ashley - Hamlin NY   December 22nd, 2008 10:45 pm ET

All right people, leave the poor man alone. He's an Emmy-winning journalist who actually REPORTS and asks sincere questions. If he wants to gnaw his nails off, then let him.

Atika Meutiawati   December 22nd, 2008 10:45 pm ET

Just want to say hi...could't get a visa to the US...so I'm miserable this holiday sesaon. Having AC360 live helps. Thanks.

Heidi B   December 22nd, 2008 10:45 pm ET

Erica I think you are the most relaxed person on t.v ,no matter what the throw at you ,you do it with ease i think your great

Gail Duncan   December 22nd, 2008 10:45 pm ET

Shop for christmas? Yea, I will shop my heart and mind to find some solutions to get through all this and help others along the way. There are blessings in the storm if we look deep enough.

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   December 22nd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Anderson, think of shopping as helping a job in peril..Someone's job will go go belly up, if we don't shop.

Sheila   December 22nd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Several amazing shelters have worked with the dogs saved from Michael Vicks kennels and they are now family pets in good homes.

Anderson? As you know, I've been a public advocate for pets since the horror of Katrina.

I'm so pleased others are on board. It's good for the pets. It's good for people.

Thanks for keeping these stories on air.

Merry Christmas!

Gary Senser   December 22nd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Anderson – If the banks aren't willing to provide an accounting for TARP funds, why can't congress refuse any additional funds? And, why can't the banks that refuse to open their books be forced to refund those funds to the gov't? They should play by the same rules as Detroit?

Candace from Canada   December 22nd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

I am not fond of shopping either – and this year I have really cut back. Just doesn't make sense to spend a lot of money with so much uncertainty out there in the economy.

Even here in Northern Canada – things are slowing down big time!

Darn – only 'young' women can sell their eggs... how old is not young enough! *lol* I would totally donate an egg but at my age – I don't think I would get $7000. Maybe $500? ;)

EJ (USA)   December 22nd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

I could not sell my eggs. I could not do it. I just see it as selling a son or daughter.

Knowing me, I'd try to track down that kid later on and wreck their life.

Maureen T   December 22nd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

So Anderson, you're the last minute shopper!

Kris - Jacksonville FL   December 22nd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

how far will we go for money? and why is it all about the money?

Tracey - Boston   December 22nd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

There is an age limit for donation....over 30? forget about it.

Sherrol in Canada   December 22nd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Wow, gives new meaning to 'desperate times, call for despereate measures!!

Marie McGuffin, Everett Washington   December 22nd, 2008 10:47 pm ET

Thank you Anderson for reporting on the Vic dogs. These dog are truly miracles and it shows dogs are not by nature aggressive not even pit bulls! I thank Vic in all his misery for bringing dog fighting into the light as it is an incredibly horrendous blood sport.

Ken in NC   December 22nd, 2008 10:47 pm ET

WOW and I thought eggs in the grocery were a rip off.

Bill T in Missouri   December 22nd, 2008 10:47 pm ET

The incredible, mortgage saving egg!!

Jacqui Chan   December 22nd, 2008 10:48 pm ET

I have always loved children and wnted a big family but lately I have found myself contemplating when the time is right will I be able to bring a child into this highly overpopulated world with the polar ice caps melting and the expected food shartages I can't imagine bringing a child of mine into this world only to give him/ her to a stranger

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   December 22nd, 2008 10:48 pm ET

If they did it for free it would be different, but to sell the eggs seems unseemly.

Megan Dresslar (Shoreline, WA)   December 22nd, 2008 10:48 pm ET

Anderson.....
I understand you hate shopping..... I know what you mean that people hate to do shopping.....

Sherrol in Canada   December 22nd, 2008 10:48 pm ET

Erica, great singing, you rock.

Glen Up North   December 22nd, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Ashley's right, Anders. Online shopping sure beats the runner-up (hiring someone to do your shopping for you... there _are_ professional shoppers, aren't there?), forget suffering the crowds (if there are any this year). And with online services such as PayPal becoming more prevalent, credit cards aren't the necessity they once were to shop online.

Jolene, St. Joseph, MI   December 22nd, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Must be good looking and intelligent to donate your eggs? Do they have that requirement for men who donate sperm too?

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   December 22nd, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Anderson, I have sponsored two of Vick's dogs, Ellen and Lucas for the past two years from the Best Friends Animal Society.

Anthony - Pittsburgh,PA   December 22nd, 2008 10:50 pm ET

I'd like to know what i have to do to get a part of that $700 billion bailout to get rid of my nearly $20,000 school loan debt. I didn't get there by gambling on the futures of others like the banks did, just my own.

Fay, CA   December 22nd, 2008 10:50 pm ET

I loathe shopping and ESPECIALLY Christmas shopping. So happy to see other shopping haters here!

Michelle Brown   December 22nd, 2008 10:51 pm ET

I find it halarious that we took Michael Vick down for dog fighting , and Madoff is out of bail, after robbing people blind, Chicago Govenor still can claim he has a job, and on and on.

Dogs over people? Wow – amazing.

Glen Up North   December 22nd, 2008 10:52 pm ET

Ashley : I don't know about the others, but I can speak for myself: I'm teasing Anders because I _like_ the guy! Respectfully, of course. ;)

Tracey - Boston   December 22nd, 2008 10:53 pm ET

Anderson – remember your mom likes it when you make her a gift. It comes from the heart.

Bonnie   December 22nd, 2008 10:53 pm ET

Is PETA ever happy?

Brandi - bottom of the boot   December 22nd, 2008 10:53 pm ET

Jo Ann, go you! such a committment and it shows your great character. those poor dogs.

Mike, Syracuse NY   December 22nd, 2008 10:53 pm ET

Great story on Vick's dogs. Hopefully when Vick gets out the NFL won't take him back.

LisaL - Canada   December 22nd, 2008 10:53 pm ET

if they can’t see the light, make ‘em feel the heat.

oh, now THAT was well put, david !! more people should be feeling more heat, i think

erica : good job on the singing – you have a nice voide
erica : biden's 2nd dog will be a golden lab from a shelter :)

Megan Dresslar (Shoreline, WA)   December 22nd, 2008 10:53 pm ET

Hellooo David Gergen.....
Nice see you on Live Blog tonight!!! I agree with your comment!!!

I don't like dogs to fight each other.... it is so bad...... I love dogs to quiet , peace not to mean......... I am support dogs.....

Mary H. St. Louis, MO   December 22nd, 2008 10:53 pm ET

Anderson... don't get out there now and shop...It has gotten so crazy... I have never seen so many rude people out there pushing and shoving. I feel so bad for the retail clerks.. I bet they can't wait for it to be over. I'm ready for it to be over.

Ashley - Hamlin NY   December 22nd, 2008 10:54 pm ET

Haha Glen. I don't think you'll find any AC-haters on this site.

As it is, I'm a journalism student/New Orleans humanitarian I utterly bow down to the man....

Candace from Canada   December 22nd, 2008 10:54 pm ET

PETA seems a bit out of whack on this.
I think any dog saved is great!
I can't believe PETA would have preferred these dogs be euthanized.

Bill T in Missouri   December 22nd, 2008 10:54 pm ET

Good show Anderson and all....G'night fellow bloggers!!

Rikki, Fargo, ND   December 22nd, 2008 10:54 pm ET

I've never really understood PETA! They think that it would be better off for these dogs to be put down then to rehab them so that they can be loved and love others? I really enjoyed that story Erica! Thanks!

tim   December 22nd, 2008 10:54 pm ET

wow, kill the dogs that need a little help....why not just kill everyone in rehab and prison then? get real peta

Dale North   December 22nd, 2008 10:54 pm ET

Thanks, we enjoy your show. (Thailand)

Jolene, St. Joseph, MI   December 22nd, 2008 10:55 pm ET

Erica: Thanks for the follow-up on Vick's dogs. Glad to see they are going to good homes. With the economy the way it is, more and more dogs are in need of homes these days. That's why I've cut down my X-mas spending and have given instead to the local shelters.

anderson cooper   December 22nd, 2008 10:55 pm ET

ah yes, the nail biting.. an old bad habit.. i once wrote about it for details magazine years ago....i dont do it as much as i once did.. but old habits die hard.

Jacqui Chan   December 22nd, 2008 10:55 pm ET

ERICA I this is a perfect segmet for you! I am completely w you All 4 of my cats are rescues; 2 my friends found in the park and I also have a stray Mom and one of her (now adult) kittens I used to volunteer w a group in petsMart and loved it! I take care of the strays in my hood and have rescued 30 and hope to be able to afford to have many more...
THANK YOU FOR SPEAKING UP FOR THE SHELTER ANIMALS ERICA!

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   December 22nd, 2008 10:55 pm ET

Anderson, Thanks for the update on the Vick dogs. I appreciate the work that PETA does, but I have problems with some of their ideas.

Judith   December 22nd, 2008 10:55 pm ET

RE: PayPal...All credit cards i.e. [debit/credit] are databased into PayPal. Your card is registered forever. I don't trust PayPal for reasons I won't go into here. But I would limit my use with their easy pay system. You don't have privy to what is going on behind the scenes and that is the scary partt.

Christine   December 22nd, 2008 10:55 pm ET

That woman from PETA should be put down. Why destroy an animal that didn't choose their life.

pamela klein   December 22nd, 2008 10:56 pm ET

I don't understand why all the newspapers and magazines only focus about Rev. Warren being anti gay because of his opposition to gay "marriage".. Much more important for me is that is has stated that all gay people are at a level with pedophiles, incest criminals and all those "other" unsavory types. Why reach across the aisle to someone who believes that more than 10% of Americans including myself are people to be despised! I am so disappointed in Obama

Mary H. St. Louis, MO   December 22nd, 2008 10:56 pm ET

Does Ed need an assistant?

Dulcie - Denver   December 22nd, 2008 10:56 pm ET

Anderson,

I read that article at my hairdresser's years ago, long before I ever watched your show!

Sheila   December 22nd, 2008 10:56 pm ET

Dear Erica,

You did an amazing story on Michael Vick's dogs! The pictures of those dogs playing with their new families are amazing.

I understand that Best Friends Animal Society in Utah has contributed to the rehab of the dogs rescued from Vick's property.

Let's remember there are always a thousand dogs up for adoption within a hundred miles of us.

"Your dog" doesn't need to be famous. Just loved. That love will be repaid in spades.

Whatcha waiting for? Go fetch your dog!

Marie Lussoro and Mom   December 22nd, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Peta's representative view on the dogs is surprising. All animals deserve a second chance. The proof is what the rehab workers have done with these dogs, working with children, ect. It shows you how far patience and love will go.

Joyce Hanly   December 22nd, 2008 10:57 pm ET

suddenly Obama deserves a $3 mil $ house? couldn't he have toned it down just a bit and stayed at the 4 Seasons residences?
He does look darn good without a shirt though. An encouragement to all American to cut down on the meat and fats. Go Vegan!

Ashley - Hamlin NY   December 22nd, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Have no fear AC! As a fellow nail biter, I feel your pain.

Thanks for embarrassing/humbling Cooper Hill!!

Maureen, Georgia   December 22nd, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Tahe banks certainly are not helping us, is'nt that the reason they got the bailout? Does anyone know of anyone who has gotten a loan from any banks lately? Ed Henry looks so happy to be where he is and he looks comfortable with what he is wearing.

Lori from IL   December 22nd, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Anderson, Erica & The 360 team –

Good show tonight. Enjoying all the laughs.

Quit picking on poor Ed Henry - I have a feeling Anderson in his "bloomers" with reappear every chance the team gets!

Good night everyone.

Maureen T   December 22nd, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Anderson,
great shot! Touche! Thanks Erica! Seeing Anderson swim is alright this time of the night! :) Goodnight and thanks again!

Candace from Canada   December 22nd, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Wow Good Night Everyone!
Great comments as usual!

Anderson & Erica you both Rock! :)

happy holidays!

:) cam_canada

Matt - Austin, TX   December 22nd, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Thank you team of GREAT producers and Erica!

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   December 22nd, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Monday's Shot..At least Ed Henry didn't take a dip in the sea..Sometimes we are blessed to be spared some sights..Night all..

Jolene, St. Joseph, MI   December 22nd, 2008 10:58 pm ET

I think Ed Henry and David Gergen need to team up and do some big time "getting back" at Anderson Cooper. However, we never tire of seeing Anderson's bloomers. Perhaps he's wearing them now since we never see him get out from that desk anymore!!!!

Great discussion and show tonight. Happy Holidays! Nite all!

Ingrid from Northern VA   December 22nd, 2008 10:58 pm ET

Don't feel bad Anderson, I sometimes rub my eyebrows when I watch tv:) We all have our habits...
Night everyone, sleep tight...

Brandi - bottom of the boot   December 22nd, 2008 10:58 pm ET

ha anderson, i read that article, and i completely agree, there is a certain amount of satisfaction in a job well done, but how good of a job can you do between takes? lol

goodnite all. thank you very much for cheering up my monday.

Rikki, Fargo, ND   December 22nd, 2008 10:58 pm ET

Its just mean to show those of us here in the cold that clip again...but Anderson's bloomers make me laugh...I don't think it matters what rules you set, I hate to say but Michael Phelps is gonna beat you every time! Great show tonight guys!

Good night Anderson, Erica and bloggers!

Kris - Jacksonville FL   December 22nd, 2008 10:58 pm ET

nail biters unite!!

EJ (USA)   December 22nd, 2008 10:59 pm ET

I read that article at my hairdresser’s years ago, long before I ever watched your show!

I never notice his nail biting. Maybe because I have this nervous thing I do with my leg so it all seems natural to me. I'll have to check out the nail biting them in the 11pm show.

Ashley - Hamlin NY   December 22nd, 2008 10:59 pm ET

Good night and happy Monday all.

Stay warm.

And Cooper, do some shopping already! (And buy yourself some new "bloomers"!)

Thanks to the entire AC360 staff!

Megan Dresslar (Shoreline, WA)   December 22nd, 2008 10:59 pm ET

Good night Anderson, Erica, David Gergen and best bloggers!!!!!!!
Have a great night and sleep tight!!!!
See you tomorrow night!!!
Day of the shot with Ed and Anderson!!!! Awww!!! That is so sweet see Anderson to swim and Ed is on the beach magum P.I. That is great shot!!!!!!!! Anderson, good job.... you were great swimming!!!!

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   December 22nd, 2008 10:59 pm ET

Michelle Brown, I don't think this is a matter of choosing animals over people to punish Vick. Madoff is going to get his sooner or later, but Vick deserved to be punished.

You should try and learn some compassion.

EJ (USA)   December 22nd, 2008 10:59 pm ET

Goodnight Anderson & Erica. Very funny show tonight.

David, Indiana   December 22nd, 2008 11:00 pm ET

Hang in there Anne, I've been unemployed for like forever, 3mos can drive you nuts, but it's not a long gap in employment and that's good. I'll say a prayer for you.

Good night everyone.

Glen Up North   December 22nd, 2008 11:00 pm ET

1 more comment via Paypal: what's to say online retailers don't store your card in a database as well? I agree, there's always a "leap of faith" you have to take with these companies, but after about 5 to 7 years of use (memory's hazy), I have to say I only have good things to say.

Ken in NC   December 22nd, 2008 11:00 pm ET

Great show tonight Anderson. Good night all. See you tomorrow night.
