It looks like she's been in the wars. In fact, she just joined President Bush on his weekend trip to Baghdad and came back with what she calls a "shoe-venir".

Dana Perino, the White House Press Secretary, was sporting a clearly visible black eye as she returned to work in Washington today, briefing reporters on subjects including car industry bailouts and Middle East peace.

Ms Perino was in the room when an Iraqi reporter, Muntadhar al-Zaidi, pulled off his shoes and flung them at Mr Bush on Sunday in a gesture of contempt that has seen him hailed as a hero in the Arab world.

Mr Bush, who was giving a joint press conference with the Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, ducked sharply as the size 10 loafers whizzed past his head. His spokeswoman, sitting to his right, was hit in the face by a microphone boom sent flying by a presidential bodyguard.

Well I guess the shoe throwing that everyone thinks is so funny had a casualty after all. I bet Dana wasn't laughing about it!

Well Philippe, I suppose that is part of her job description. Taking a hit for the boss. Poor girl!

Shoe shiner and coffee on Ms Perino’s face, not funny.

Now Dana knows how the rest of America feels when Bush is around.

Poor Dana. She ought to ask for combat pay. I'm glad her injury was no worse but had the Secret Service been more vigilant perhaps she wouldn't have been injured at all.

Yeah, she needs to suck it up and get over it. So, she got hit wi/ it. BOO-WHOO. Go cry to her mommy or her boss. I'm sure it's the least he can do to compensate her for all of her troubles. Personally, I think it makes her look so fetch.

If the shoe didn't hit you must acquit!

Luann Martin   December 16th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

I was alittle impressed with how well Mr. Bush dodged the shoes but then realized he has been ducking the issues (another type of shoe) for eight years . Bless you!

Just another victim of hatred inspired by G W Bush and company. This time it apparently hit home and the bystander just happened to be one of G W Bush's own instead of some innocent American or Iraqi. I just can't shake the feeling that There is some kind of divine 'justice' being played out here
