Tonight, we’re following breaking news. Overseas markets react to another massive selloff on Wall Street. The dow loses nearly 700 points, on dismal economic news and official word the U.S. is in a recession and has been since last December. While the news wasn’t a surprise to Americans already feeling the economic slowdown, it contributed to the market’s downward spiral.
Also tonight, President-elect Obama unveils his national security team, nominating Senator Hillary Clinton for Secretary of State. We’ll tell you what she and Bill Clinton gave up to get the post.
Tell us what you think tonight about the stock market selloff, official word that we’re in a recession, as well as President-elect Obama’s nominees.

December 1st, 2008 10:05 pm ET A-bit late to admit were in a recession” I think we really need to change the measurement (or definition) of the term “recession.” We’re officially in a recession NOW because the sconomy fits the historical definition. |

December 1st, 2008 10:11 pm ET Hillary Clinton being appointed as Secretary of State is a very smart move for the President Elect. She has much experience and has much pride in this country. She already has that stepping stone with foreign countries from being former First Lady being very loved around the world. |

December 1st, 2008 10:12 pm ET Would you people quit focusing on the made-up drama of Clinton and Obama? It’s so high-schoolish. These are 2 adults who seem perfectly capable of doing what the media cannot: putting personal animosity behind them and move forward in the best interests of the country. |
|
| Vanessa, Silver Spring Maryland |
December 1st, 2008 10:12 pm ET Bea, do you really have to wonder if Obama down the road would do the same for Michelle as Bill is doing for Hilary right now? |

December 1st, 2008 10:14 pm ET Hi Anderson, Erica, everyone, great explanation as usual by Ali Velshi of market activity today that happened to be a plunge. We might be near the end of the recession? I feel confident Obama team can work together, seems like there are plenty of responsibilities to go around for everyone, especially for the national security team. |
|
| Ingrid from Northern VA |
December 1st, 2008 10:14 pm ET I hope that for once, Bill Clinton can step back and let Hillary shine…He has had his time and would over shadow both Obama and Hillary and it’s only fair to take a breather..if that’s possible! |

December 1st, 2008 10:14 pm ET Campbell Brown did a great commentary on Obama’s skating around the quesiton about the “evolution” of his opinion regarding Hilary Clinton. The President-elect needs to have his feet held to the fire by the press. |

December 1st, 2008 10:15 pm ET Hello Anderson and Erica. I am upset that the announcement of the recession took one year to happen. I would have done something with my IRA a year ago if I had known then what it took the government to announce today. My IRA has been cut in half, what am I to do in my later years? |

December 1st, 2008 10:15 pm ET In very simple words, Obama has displayed all along an incredible ability to strategize and set forth the highest standards of selflessness while maintaining composure, recognition and control. |

December 1st, 2008 10:15 pm ET Although I do like Hillairy Clinton, and I think she is about as qualified in foreign policy as Condoleeza Rice and Madeline Albright, I believe her ego eclipses her two female predecessors. I think this is going to be a “wait and see” situation between Hillairy Clinton and President-Elect Obama. It is my wish that Hillairy realizes that Barack Obama is the president, not her. I think if she can keep that foremost in her mind, I think they will work together. I guess you can say I’m cautiously optimistic. |

December 1st, 2008 10:16 pm ET My question about Obama’s cabinet is what will Joe Biden being doing? I thought he was mainly picked as VP for his foreign or international experience. |

| Dulcie - Denver |
December 1st, 2008 10:16 pm ET When I got to work and checked CNN, I saw that it was now ‘officially’ a recession. Well, D’uh! I lost my job a year ago. |
|
| Brandi - bottom of the boot |
December 1st, 2008 10:16 pm ET I agree with David Gergen. Obama is building a great cabinet. I dont understand why people keep questioning where the change is coming from though. I think they all want to make changes and wanted to in the past as well, they just were overruled. I think they are all excited to attempt to make real changes. love you David! so glad you are still on the show. |

December 1st, 2008 10:16 pm ET Since we are in a recession, are we going to start giving back the jobs to Americans. For example, try picking up a few articles of clothing you may own. 4 out of 5 I bet say made in Korea, Japan, China, India etc. We need to get back to basics and get the jobs to the people that need them in the U.S. What ever happened to Made in America? |

December 1st, 2008 10:16 pm ET I kept hearing this phrase through the whole campaign “We Need Change” and McCain is just an extended version of the Bush administration. All I see right now is an extended version of the Clinton administration. Where is the “Change”? |
|
| Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio |
December 1st, 2008 10:16 pm ET There are so many strong personalities among Obama’s choices, it will take a strong personality to keep them all in check. |

| chris from stl |
December 1st, 2008 10:16 pm ET You may call Obama’s policy “centrist” or whatever you want … His cabinet selections are top notch and that’s what the country needs now. Experienced people with vision and a will to succeed … |
|
| Cynthia |
December 1st, 2008 10:16 pm ET I think picking Hillary is a smart choice. Obama said it himself. She has the knowledge and experience, is a very smart woman and is well respected around the world. At this time he needs her in that position. One more thought, if the roles had been reversed and Hillary had been president and Obama had lost, would it have been likely without the experience he had that he would have gotten a secretary of state position. With his lack of experience most likely not. He most likely would have had to return to the Senate. |
|

December 1st, 2008 10:17 pm ET there is no hilary clinton factor or bill clinton factor, there is a competent foreign policy team “need” for this country as well as the world who should advise this young president. hilary clinton is one of the best choices. |
|
| richard judelsohn |
December 1st, 2008 10:18 pm ET When Joe Johns reported on what the deal was to bring on Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, he left out the genesis of the agreement: in June, when Senator Obama clinched the nomination with primary delegates, Clinton agreed to stop fighting all the way to the convention (using Superdelegates, the Clinton machine, dirty tricks, etc.) in return for a major appointment, if Obama won the Presidency. |
|
| Richard Wells |
December 1st, 2008 10:18 pm ET President elect Obama is taking his chances with Sen Clinton. His huge margin of victory in the election shows that he, independently was able to win over much of the vote that went to Clinton during the primary season. On the other hand, by bringing her into his cabinet, Obama thrusts Clinton into the limelight again to the extent that if the economy or foreign policy woes are affecting Obama’s presidency three years from now, it puts Clinton in a very good postion to challenge Obama’s reelection bid. This is particularly true because Clinton will have much more visibility as Secretary of State, than she would have if she was just a senator from New York. |

December 1st, 2008 10:19 pm ET Oh well, secretary of state is a lady, good job Obama!! we already had Condoleeza Rice and Madame Albright in the same capacity not too long ago. Looking forward to the day the Treasury Secretary will be a woman!!! |

December 1st, 2008 10:19 pm ET I just can’t imagine Bill Clinton taking Hillary Clinton’s Senate spot…..it amazes me how those type of speculations even get considered. |

December 1st, 2008 10:19 pm ET Obama has done a great job picking his team. However, it is to be seen if he will be able to deliver on the Campaign promises such as withdrawal of US troops from Iraq within 16 months, considering that Bob Gates, Hillary Clinton and Johnson all supprted the Iraq war. |
|

December 1st, 2008 10:19 pm ET Hey Anderson, |
|
| Tyvian Corry |
December 1st, 2008 10:19 pm ET I am profoundly impressed with the selection of the National Security team that President-Elect Obama has chosen. As a fellow New Yorker that identifies with Hillary Clinton, I would have to agree that I have complete confidence in Obama’s choice of making her secretary of state, and I think that she will do her best for all americans. Republicans should take note and watch the real Democrats at work where they clean up the mess that they have made, from the economy to the war in Iraq and to all domestic issues that all of us americans face especially from the middle class. |
|
| Roy W. Jackson |
December 1st, 2008 10:19 pm ET I think we are moving into an age of reasoning and Odama’s selection is a testament to this new direction. I am very proud to be at this crossroad in our history. Patience and faith is the most powerful process in human history. |
|
| Robby Skeens |
December 1st, 2008 10:19 pm ET I think Obama needed the Clintons are partners not adversaries..But think he will regre putting Hillary in a position of that much influence. I’m not convicec she is all that diplomatic. |
|
| Tim Gilbert |
December 1st, 2008 10:19 pm ET Hillary is well respected among world leaders across the globe. She’s well informed, well connected and well educated, and I trust she’ll do well as Secretary of State. It does not matter that much whether this was a political “back room” deal. Politics is defined as the giving and taking and compromising in order to progress beyond where one is today. So Dems must unite, and they must find common ground with Republicans in order to move our nation forward. Good decision. |

December 1st, 2008 10:20 pm ET I think President Obama made very good choice by selecting hillary , secretory of state, as bill and hillary clinton are well knowned on International platform and they have very good relationship with somany countries outhtere. And they are among well respected american politicians on international platform. |

December 1st, 2008 10:20 pm ET What will now happen in Hillary’s fraud case in California that was supposed to start now that the presidential campaign ended? Did Obama’s staff vetting her deal with the isssue concerning her and the Peter Paul controversy? |
|
| James Ambroff |
December 1st, 2008 10:20 pm ET I am disappointed that President-elect Barack Obama has picked Sen. Hillary Clinton to be his secretary of state. Sen. Clinton has no foreign policy experience and, considering her interest in health care reform, would have been more appropriately placed in his Cabinet as secretary of health and human services. Bill Richardson, who has a masters degree in international relations and was U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and a special envoy, would have been a superior choice to run the State Department. And, if Obama was keen on rewarding the Clintons with stewardship of Foggy Bottom, he should have selected the former president instead of his wife. |
|
| Taiwo Adeoye |
December 1st, 2008 10:21 pm ET I think that with Hilary Clinton as Sec. of State, she ruins any chance she has of running in 2012 (which she was probably thinking of)! Ultimately, she has to make President-elect Barack Obama look really good for the next 4 years at least and ironically, that will leave her attack strategy points if she decided to run. On the other hand, if the next administration goes downhill then she’ll be tied to that anyway! Leaves me wondering if this choice is one of Obama’s brillant strategies. You gotta love him! |
|
| Sharon Hermanson |
December 1st, 2008 10:21 pm ET I am so excited that Hillary Clinton is finally where she deserves to be and everyone else is where they should be in the national scheme of things. I believe in our president elect without any doubt and I think that so far he has used the judgement that we gave him credit for when we elected him. And by the way , thanks Bill. |
|
| Celeste Colon-Mazzeo |
December 1st, 2008 10:21 pm ET It’s about time! Hillary has devoted her life to Bill Clinton, now it is her turn. And we the American people will benefit. Hillary Clinton is an intelligent forceful public servant. The country is lucky to have her . |
|
| Steven from Brooklyn |
December 1st, 2008 10:21 pm ET I also find it funny that Wall Street and Washington now admit that we are in a recession. Bush refused to use the word for months. DUH! Now, for Obama’s introduction of his Foreign Policy team………… I love it! I knew that he would assemble a great group of people to work with. A collection of great minds. I never doubted his ability to bring people together and they will “get things done”. |
|
| Bea |
December 1st, 2008 10:21 pm ET Gergen is wrong; Hillary is right.. There won’t be a warming toward Bush. There will be people who will finally say what they felt they couldn’t say while he was in office. The knives will come out, Dem and Repub. |

December 1st, 2008 10:23 pm ET bj and kent, you must admit that the clinton administration and the bush administration were very different. give the new administration a chance to get into office and begin making some of these changes. he is chosing visionaries for his cabinet, very smart ones. |

December 1st, 2008 10:23 pm ET Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and holiday weekend. After four days of fun family activities, I’m glad it’s Monday and the routine is returning. Anderson, glad to see you back on 360 — hope you had a great vacation. I’m excited about Obama’s picks, announced today. Transparancy seems to be a high priorty in the Obama administration — that’s definitely a change! Thanks, David Gergan for you words of wisdom. I agree — there’s much to do in the world today and I don’t think anyone in the Obama administration will be bored. |

December 1st, 2008 10:23 pm ET If Joe Biden is for this team I am amazed at his greatness also. . I don’t know how President Elect Obama made this decision about Hillary Clinton but I have confidence in him and Senator Biden. If Hillary Clinton has forgotten(an indication by her long acceptance speech today) she should be reminded she lost the “primary” not the election to Obama. I think she has the best interest of the country at heart and that is our basic concern. I don’t think they have lost this desire and that appeals to the best in many of us. We long to see our country great again and respected around the world. |

December 1st, 2008 10:23 pm ET I think there are a lot of people who felt the economy was at its best during the Clinton years so Obama going with all the Clintonites doesn’t really surprise me. |
|
| David, Indiana |
December 1st, 2008 10:24 pm ET Soft power at the State Department vs Hard Power at the Dept of Defense, did I get that right, that’s an interesting point by David Gergen, sort of helps to conceptualize Hillary Clinton’s role as SoS. |
|

December 1st, 2008 10:24 pm ET I finally decided to go the 360 blog. I’ll try to contribute. Am a real political junky and student of history. I followed the presidential campaign for two years and cried when Wolf B. announced at 10pm EST on Nov 4 that Barack Obama was elected the 44th president of the US. And then again during the Grant Park broadcast. I look to CNN for my news. (I do bounce around between MSNBC and rarely Fox to get the extreme left and right). I think highly of Anderson and Erica and the 360 team / program. I even watch it twice a day. I have a life, don’t worry. Just value your brand of news. As for tonights news stories, the folks at Walmart need some security on the outside of the stores during these big sales events. Shoppers need to be held accountable on their behavior as well. Perhaps some serious follow-up on the video with consumers would give consumers some food for thought next time the urge to stampede arises. Greg D, Texas |

December 1st, 2008 10:24 pm ET They must have really kept Bush out of the loop because if I remember correctly the people at PNAC were planning a war with Iraq as far back as 1998. And Cheney and a lot of members of the Bush Administration were members of that group. |

December 1st, 2008 10:24 pm ET All the cabinet members deserved their post, but for Hillary, there is need for a serious assessment. I think the nomination is just a sort of compensation well packaged. |

December 1st, 2008 10:24 pm ET @ Kent: How is Hillary being Secretary of State having Clinton back in office? People keep saying it, and it makes no logical sense to me. Obama is the final word, and he said so himself. I can’t recall the exact words, but I think I’m quoting CNN quoting the President-Elect here? “The buck stops with me,” or some such thing. That was the gist, anyway. |

December 1st, 2008 10:25 pm ET What?!? Bush unprepared for war? Noooo, you’re kidding me??!! How can he say the unexpected happened when the WTC was bombed in ‘93, there were numerous attacks all over the world and Rice had a memo that said, bin laden wants to attack in the US? How about unprepared to fight the real enemy so he attacks Iraq for no reason. |

December 1st, 2008 10:27 pm ET These stores have created a mob mentality and it needs to stop. Give out numbers or take orders for the limited merchandise and have sales all day long instead of say 5-1. There must be crowd control. And open the stores at a normal time. We who work in retail would like to enjoy the holidays too. |

December 1st, 2008 10:29 pm ET I just wanted to say that you (Anderson) and CNN have done an incredible job reporting about the horrific and tragic bombings in Mumbai. Being an American of Indian descent I was upset to see other stations such as Fox News and NBC hardly gave any air time for this tragedy and so should everyone else. Just wanted to say thanks. On a side note I am very pleased with Obama’s choice of Hillary Clinton as Sec. of State and keeping Robert Gates. I am a staunch Clinton supporter and I am glad to see Obama is keeping with his word of involving both parties in his administration. |

December 1st, 2008 10:30 pm ET If our government does what it did up to now we will be in depression very soon. If giving to the rich supposed to make us go to store and buy things then we need new economists to teach demed side economics and not supply side economics. |

December 1st, 2008 10:30 pm ET It just goes to show you that even if a country is warned about a possible terrorist attack, as we were before 911, there is little that can be done without details. |

December 1st, 2008 10:30 pm ET It will be interesting what we find out about the Mumbai attacks, whether it is linked to Pakistan or not. Some of the stories of survival from the attacks have been fascinating and horrifying at the same time! |

December 1st, 2008 10:31 pm ET Hi Anderson and Erica: What Barak O’Bama is doing is getting the best people possible for his team. He’s been a uniter and that’s one of the big reasons for his election. He needs Hilary’s help, he needed her in the campaign and he needs her expertise to teach him what he doesn’t know yet. Political Adversaries, yes – the both wanted the job very badly. Abiltiy to work together, yes – they’ve always a really strong respect for each other, and very often you would see glimpses of affection between them. She will be a great Sec. of State, and as you listened today, she will put everything into it. She can help mold the USA’s return to respect in the world, and as Sec. of State, her input at cabinet meetings will be strong, and influence throughout the government will be significant. The mere fact that Obama chose her, speaks volumes for his intention on unity. |

December 1st, 2008 10:31 pm ET Anderson ….. those kind of terrorist warnings are issued routinely …. even Pres. Bush was informed about some kind of warning about 9/11 …. unless there are some specifics involved, these warnings are useless. |

December 1st, 2008 10:32 pm ET There had to be inside connections at the Taj. All the descriptions of the events indicate the attrackers knew their way aorund the (guts) of the hotel. The hallways and exits of an old hotel are like a maze, and the bigger the more challenging to navigate. |

December 1st, 2008 10:33 pm ET Hi Anderson Cooper, I think that Hillary Clinton and President elect Obama will make a great team, it goes with the old saying keep your friends close and your alies closer. I didnt want to say enemy because I dont think she is. I think America is in now if in good hands with Obama. |
|
| Taiwo Adeoye |
December 1st, 2008 10:33 pm ET Yes, Obama’s campaign theme was “Change”. However people, you have to understand that it does not mean there will be no form of continuity somewhere! When Obama said Change, did you seriously think he was going to start reviewing resumes from unknowns? I will like to reiterate what Obama has been saying recently, the change will come from him because he has new visions for this country. All decisions will originally be his brainchild but of course, he will consult with the appropriate people as need be… Cut the guy some slack… |

December 1st, 2008 10:35 pm ET Megan, I think it would be very difficult for them to criminally charge Wal-Mart or anyone involved in the stampede on black Friday. At most I think they could charge them with involuntary manslaughter. With criminal charges you have to prove intent which I think would be very difficult in this case. So I don’t think Wal-Mart would be criminally liable but they would certainly be liable in a civil wrongful death suit and have to pay the victim’s family a sum of money. |

December 1st, 2008 10:35 pm ET The press is acting as if there was no contact between Senator Clinton and Preseident-Elect Obama since the Primaries ended. Don’t people think when she made over 60 campaign stops for him, their issues were ironed out. That’s 60 not 6. |

December 1st, 2008 10:39 pm ET why are we still talking about Palin? she only appeals to the conservative base of the republican party…its not enough to win an election…as far as I’m concerned, her nomination cost McCain a LOT of votes and most of the women I talk to think that it was an insult to women – they all just assumed we would follow simply because she is a woman…seriously, give us more credit |

December 1st, 2008 10:47 pm ET That whole thing at WalMart makes me extremely angry–at both the shoppers as well as WalMart. The whole incident is extremely short-sighted on WalMart’s part. Was WalMart negligent??? Are the elements there to prove negligence? |

December 1st, 2008 10:52 pm ET So many are saying that President elect Obama is not setting up for CHANGE because he is bring in many from the Clinton years. You must consider that he does not need people that must learn their way around Washington with our economy in the shape it is in. I suspect that the CHANGE he is speaking of is how the government will run with him at the helm. I think that by releasing the names of his contributors today is an example of what he means by CHANGE. He wants government to be more transparent and fair to all. I can only suggest that we give him a chance considering the condition of the country now when he has not even taken office. |

December 1st, 2008 10:57 pm ET Being such a large corporation, a large pay-out wont make a big difference to Wal-Mart, where it will make a difference is that if something like this were to happen again, that opens up any company involved in the same issue to more liability even criminal liability because with this horrible incident it becomes a foreseeable incident and stores will be expected to start taking further security measures. December 1st, 2008 10:59 pm ET Anderson! You’re the man, and I love the show, but do yourself a favor and apologize ASAP for busting on Toobin during the Jennifer Hudson story…a joke during a story about a dead 7 year-old. You’re better than that! You still rock – keep up the great work. |
