Chicago police say they’ve arrested 27-year-old William Balfour for the October murders of three relatives of Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson. Balfour is the estranged husband of Hudson’s older sister and stepfather of one of the victims, 7-year-old Julian King. The other victims were Hudson’s mother and brother. Balfour has been in custody on a parole violation since shortly after the killings; he previously served seven years for a 1999 attempted murder and carjacking conviction. We’ll have the latest on his arrest and the investigation.

Jdimytai Damour was a big man – linebacker big at 6 feet 5 inches tall and 270 pounds. But on Friday morning he was no match for the mob that trampled him to death at a Wal-Mart store on New York’s Long Island. Damour, a 34-year-old temporary worker, was mowed down as he tried to unlock the store’s doors. A dozen other people were also knocked down in the stampede, including a woman eight months pregnant. A satirist couldn’t make up a better storyline to highlight greed and materialism run amok. Too bad it’s not satire. A young man was killed, and tonight there are new details about how he died and what police are hoping to learn from a store surveillance tape. 360’s Randi Kaye has the story.

Today, we finally learned (shhh!) we’re in a recession. Actually we’ve been in one since last December, according to the group in charge of tracking such things. Of course, this isn’t news to most people who don’t have to worry about the politics of word choice. Now that it’s official, newsmakers can finally stop using qualifiers and conditionals when talking about the obvious.

Along with the R-word, grim news from the manufacturing and construction sectors drove the Dow down nearly 700 points today, wiping out more than half of last week’s big gains. Asian markets are plunging as we prepare for tonight’s program. It’s your money, your future. CNN Chief Business Correspondent Ali Velshi puts it all in perspective tonight.
