As the United States economy has cratered, it has become increasingly apparent that we are suffering not just from a failure of institutions but, more deeply, from a failure of leaders across those institutions.
The list is long and depressing: a president who has been a catastrophe, congressional Democrats and Republicans who were looking the other way, regulators who were too lax, CEOs who gambled recklessly with other people's money, consumers who borrowed far beyond their means, and on and on.
Americans are smart enough to see what is going on...

November 21st, 2008 6:57 pm ET The entire landscape will change. Those who profited at the expense of the American people will be leveled. There is no doubt that exposure has brought about a "new intelligence" for the American people. The outcome will be an honest free market system. |

November 21st, 2008 8:21 pm ET It should be clearly understood that Pres. Elect. Obama cannot do it alone because of his lack of experience and extremely unqualified for the position, but then again the American electorate never took that into consideration, but that obvious point will never be addressed , so keep up the good work Mr. Gergen |

November 22nd, 2008 8:42 am ET I will just get to the point, no President Elect-Obama can't do it all alone. Have we forgot about the mess our now President has made. Is anyone not wanting him to clean up this mess, before leaves this office.I was always taught as a child to clean up your mess before leaving home.Leaving this mess behind and moving on is just what Mr.Bush is doing. Why would we think any one person would be able to clean up this world wide mess we are in.We will have to help with this clean up.While all the world makes Mr.Obama the one who needs to fix this mess, what about the one who made the mess Mr.Bush. What should be done about all the lies we have told by him.Where are those weapons of mess destruction? I guess Mr.Obama will have to find them too! Why not just it's one more Bush mess to clean up. |

November 22nd, 2008 9:08 am ET Who in their right mind would even think that Obama could do it alone? He is NOT the almighty messiah that his supporters think he is. For god sakes what is happening to this country? It will take a miracle, not our government to make things right. |

November 22nd, 2008 10:40 am ET Suggestion for the auto industry bailout plan: This is a great opportunity for the US. I suggest we provide the money requested by the auto makers, provided the auto makers agree to meet certain benchmarks for gas efficiency, electrical car production percentages, and hybrid vehicle production percentages. The goal is to support the US plan to be energy independent in 10 years. Normally, politicians run into too many obstacles to implement aggressive energy efficiency measures because of the oil lobby. However, this lobby has no power if we link the bailout to these performance benchmarks. Seize the opportunity. |

November 22nd, 2008 3:22 pm ET Mr. David Gergen you are always inspiring and thoughtful. I listened to your analysis throughout the campaign and it has always been fair and constructive. One of your best qualities is being able to see the qualities of others. Thank you for seeing and understanding that PE Obama has a difficult job ahead of him. A job of which he knows he will be responsible for the well being and security of every American. I trust that PE Obama will try to select the best political minds he can who love for this country and it's people. You are a remarkable leader in your field and the best political mind on TV! |

November 22nd, 2008 4:18 pm ET I do not get it! Incompetent Executives on Wall Street are paid $10's to $100's of millions to Scheme and Destroy our Economy and our Congressmen and Congresswomen have a hard time finding living arrangements in Washington. We must limit Wall Street EXCESSIVE FEES and INCOMES and restore a balance so Wall Street can not use their EXCESSIVE Financial Resources to corrupt Washington! |

November 22nd, 2008 6:47 pm ET I agree Barack Hussein Obama cannot do it alone. As the liberal news media knows, he campaigned on change. That was just a song and dance to get elected. What we got was 4 ore years of the Carter and Clinton administration. What we will get is what Jimmy Carter did to this counttry. I will be able to survive 4 years of his incompetence. I wouldn't know what to tell the American people who fell for his charade and voted for him. They are in for a rude awakening. Obama will not do anything but extend this recession. |

November 22nd, 2008 8:57 pm ET Nelson, if you haven't noticed the last few days, Pres. Elect Obama is surrounding himself with experienced and qualified people to help him undo the mess the Republicans and their corporate cronies have led us into. Thank goodness he is intelligent enought to realize he cannot do it alone and is making wise choices to lead our country. We could have elected someone who has more experience but is arrogant enough to feel he didn't need the best and brightest in his cabinet . . . Oh, how quickly we forget. We did elect someone like that. . . . . about eight years ago. |
