News of the offer confers a series of benefits on Obama. It makes him look magnanimous. It also solves a very practical problem. There do not seem to be many women in Obama’s rumored top tier appointments. With Joe Biden in the veep’s office, Rahm Emanuel as chief of staff, Bob Gates retained at Defense, Tom Daschle at Health and Human Services, Eric Holder at Justice, and, very possibly, James Steinberg as National Security Adviser, it’s testosterone, testosterone, testosterone. Aggravating the problem is the fact that the front-runner for Treasury Secretary—Larry Summers, whose reign as president of Harvard University was short-circuited by his transgressions against political correctness—remains a special demon figure among feminists. What better way to placate Democratic women than by circulating Hillary Clinton’s name for the most honorific cabinet post of all?

November 20th, 2008 9:22 am ET Hilary would do well at either post – she would be great at restoring our relationship and stature with the world and she would be great in the health care legislation. Obama campaigned for health care for all children but not the parents – Hilary wanted it for everyone. I think it is needed for everyone and I know Hilary would work to get it that way. So I hope she stays with the Senate and that she runs again for President in a few years. Annie Kate |

November 20th, 2008 10:02 am ET Hillary deserves the job.Pure and simple. This whole attitude of winner takes all cannot be introduced to a system that views democracy in a changing light. She has experience and temperament for the job.As long as her husband is kept in check the job will suit her fine and will help the new administration focus on one axis rather than split between it and an admittedly powerful senator. She's simply the right person for the job and it doesn't need to be seen as a hand out to placate angry democrats or women. |

November 20th, 2008 2:57 pm ET David, David, David, you do play the gender card too transparently, and to the disrepute of both Obama and Hillary Clinton. To say that Obama is offering the Secratary of State post to Clinton to offset the imbalance of the male-dominated cabinet is insulting. Why is it that the American public overwhelmingly chose Obama for all of his intelligence and common sense attributes, only to second guess and sulk when he makes his cabinet choices? He has clearly put alot of thought into his choices – no president-elect has ever made his selections this soon after an election. So why not be gracious and trust that Hillary may just be the best first choice for this post, period. NOT because she is female, not because it is a consolation prize. Just because she is capable. |
