|
| Minou, New York City |
November 20th, 2008 10:02 pm ET Yep, falling! I just got a call telling me my entire shift tomorrow was cut! Earlier this weak they cut my hours, now they’re cutting shifts! Crap! My company was doing so well despite the bad economy, and now it’s all going down. |

November 20th, 2008 10:03 pm ET If the economy is as bad as it seems, why is congress putting off any decisions for after the holidays? |

November 20th, 2008 10:03 pm ET So, if we didn’t have this problem with the Big 3, would the market have bottomed out at 8000? Would the “experts” have been right? |

November 20th, 2008 10:03 pm ET It’s ‘hunker down’ time….Economists say this is going to last a year or two so I hope people are patient with Obama.. |

November 20th, 2008 10:03 pm ET With the auto industry begging for a bailout to keep 3 million jobs does that incclude jobs in Mexico, Canada etc ….most parts in american cars are from Mexico!! |

November 20th, 2008 10:04 pm ET good evenng anderson, for once i am glad that I have no investments. it’s bad enough that I am one of the unemployed. great, and I am not even unique in that. this is beginning to scare the heck out of me. ali – I can answer your question. I do not spend. at all, except to pay my bills. I cannot afford to. |
|
| Kathy, Chicago |
November 20th, 2008 10:04 pm ET Yikes! We didn’t have any money 11 yrs ago, and may not have any today either. It makes you wonder why you’ve worked 40-60 hours a week. |
|
| Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio |
November 20th, 2008 10:05 pm ET I don’t understand how Congress could even consider giving the Big 3 any bailout money when none of them has a plan for how to use it. |

November 20th, 2008 10:06 pm ET I still expect the DJIA to bottom out between 6000 and 7000. I guess George Bush is getting his legacy–destruction of our country on every critical level: defense, foreign relations, the economy, Wall Street, Main Street, human rights, and on and on and on… |

November 20th, 2008 10:06 pm ET Wow. Two words for that “state of the economy” intro .. |

November 20th, 2008 10:06 pm ET Someone mentioned in a commentary that the Big 3 failing would leave the market open for foreign carmakers. Honda, Toyota, et al, could buy those plants and would have a ready trained workforce. If autoworkers have to decide btwn working for foreign carmakers or not working at all, what do you think they will choose? |
|
| Doug |
November 20th, 2008 10:06 pm ET 3,00,000 + AMERICAN jobs go bye-bye if GM and Chysler go down. And that is just the auto-related jobs. When were the congressional hearings held before we bailed out Fanny, Freddie, Wall Steet, AIG…? |
|
| Patty |
November 20th, 2008 10:06 pm ET Over the cliff….Heck he knows were are almost there already!!! He was from OH..in these states they are never going to recover! |
|
| Rikki, Fargo, ND |
November 20th, 2008 10:06 pm ET I don’t know that there is anyone that we can blame. There are a lot of greedy people out there that were trying to maximize their stock value and pad their pockets. |
|
| Curtis |
November 20th, 2008 10:07 pm ET JoAnn, we don’t even have a plan on how to use the $700 billion yet!!! |
|
| Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio |
November 20th, 2008 10:07 pm ET I am surprised that Obama hasn’t yet named a treasury secretary since the economy is the most pressing issue right now. That should have been first on his list. |
|
| pati mc., camp hill, pa |
November 20th, 2008 10:07 pm ET You know what Anderson, David would be good at either job! It was nice to see you both chuckle over that. The rest of the news is all doom and gloom. Thanks for the light-hearted moment. |
|
| Mike, Syracuse NY |
November 20th, 2008 10:07 pm ET I guess as bad as this is, we are still far from the 30% unemployment during the depression. I think if Detroit took some proactive action, like cutting Exec pay 50% and cutting the $75/hr union pay to what nonunion auto workers get there might be more sympathy for a loan. |
|

November 20th, 2008 10:07 pm ET Hey you all, good evening. I think the markets won´t get up much soon – well, he just said it while I was writing… |

November 20th, 2008 10:07 pm ET I’m 27, I haven’t started my 401K yet, I got plenty of years to work and contribute to my 401K. Right now, I just need a job to pay the bills and have the necessities. |

November 20th, 2008 10:08 pm ET My thought is Obama will announce Treasury by early next week… |
|
| Rick DeRosa |
November 20th, 2008 10:08 pm ET I’m against the big 3 bailout but take a second and think of this. If one of your family menbers is in a traffic accident or fall in their home what will happen? Over 90% of this Country’s ambulances are on Chevy or Ford chassis. No big 3 no ambulances!!! |
|
| Caren in Bisie, Congo |
November 20th, 2008 10:08 pm ET I can’t believe the Dow is this low, but I have to say, at least we as Americans know that our gov’t will see better days, and the stocks will rise again soon. At least it is a safer environment there than it is here. |

November 20th, 2008 10:08 pm ET Are public works projects the answer? God knows we have plenty of infrastructure issues. |

November 20th, 2008 10:10 pm ET Just exactly what does it mean that we might just go over the edge? |
|
| California Scott |
November 20th, 2008 10:10 pm ET Yep, that’s the ticket…. massive investment in alternative energy R&D, infrastructure, etc. That could really be the silver lining to all this mess. |
|
| Dawn |
November 20th, 2008 10:10 pm ET How about this idea? We take the 25 billion and offer half of it in grants to new companies who want to start-up building new cars. Then take the other half and offer it as unemployment benefits to those effected by the big 3’s failure. |
|
| Kerri |
November 20th, 2008 10:10 pm ET I am very angry that we don’t let the markets work. And so people that have been safe and saving their money can finally afford things that are out of thir reach like a car or a house. Why can’t the banks sell all the homes for 20 cents on the dollar! |
|
| CaseyJ - Palm Springs, CA |
November 20th, 2008 10:11 pm ET Mike, Syracuse, I asbolutely agree about auto makers and related unions “adjusting” their packages. Why does it take average people (like on this blog) to figure these things out? |
|
| Jolene, St. Joseph, MI |
November 20th, 2008 10:11 pm ET UAW Pres. Gettelfinger had an interesting news conference today in Detroit. He spoke about how some of the states helped funded foreign competition (Mercedes, etc.) to build plants, etc. He said wasn’t sticking up for the CEO’s of the Big 3 but in a way, he was. |
|
| Bill F. |
November 20th, 2008 10:11 pm ET Where’s the leaderhsip in the auto crisis? Congress beats up auto execs- 2 of 3 who weren’t there 2 years ago? Bush is AWOL. Obama is holed up. Meanwhile, my vet in Detroit sees his business collapsing with business off 20%. Now that’s collateral damage. When will someone step up and lead? |
|
| Miles, Texas |
November 20th, 2008 10:11 pm ET Hey Anderson, can you ask Ali or David why the auto execs are so afraid of chapter 11 bankruptcy? Wouldn’t that give them the freedom to restructure their companies to be more competitive in the future? Obviously a big shake up is necessary, why do they want to hold on to the status quo? |
|
| William Backstrom |
November 20th, 2008 10:11 pm ET Why didn’t congress hold the financial institutions to the same standards as the auto makers? |
|
| elisabeth meier |
November 20th, 2008 10:11 pm ET .. buy stocks? of course if you have money left over for a long while and have time and patience to wait… as long as we all care for keeping our market free and independent it will work out for you |
|
| Betty Ann, Nacogdoches,TX |
November 20th, 2008 10:11 pm ET I believe that we are definitely going into a deep depression. Welcome to the bi~polar express! |
|
| Jan |
November 20th, 2008 10:12 pm ET Do you think this economic crisis will change America and it’s citizens for good? Our gov’t and citizens have lived off credit and consumed in excess for decades; now it’s coming back to haunt us. How do we bounce back? |
|
| Barbara |
November 20th, 2008 10:12 pm ET Its really sad that the folks that will be hurt will be the working class. The CEO’s of the auto sectors will not feel the pain and anguish that we will feel when we wake our kids up to go to school inside a shelter and wonder where our next meal will come from. Our kids. We need to focus on whatever outcome benefits the children the most. |
|
| Kevin |
November 20th, 2008 10:12 pm ET Allow the big 3 auto makers go through Chapter 11 bankruptcy like everyone else. They have such an untenable business model as it stands now, bankruptcy will allow them to reorganize, restructure, and start anew. That’s what the bankruptcy process is there for. |
|
| Mike, Syracuse NY |
November 20th, 2008 10:12 pm ET Usually in a recession the government cuts taxes and raises spending to spend your way out of it. But with the current deficit, there’s no reserve capacity to raise spending. |
|
| Frank Turner |
November 20th, 2008 10:12 pm ET I can’t understand how the US Gov’t can give out $700 Billion to the banking industry without blinking and bicker incessantly regarding “loaning” out 3% of that to the largest manufacturing base within the US? |
|
| Vaughn |
November 20th, 2008 10:12 pm ET I’m in absolute agreement that the direction we should move in adopts “Green” infrastructure, but where would the majority of these jobs be located? And what skills will benefit the most? |

November 20th, 2008 10:12 pm ET Why can’t GM and Ford pension/UNIONs bailout their own company? |
|
| Anthony Hendrickx |
November 20th, 2008 10:12 pm ET How about changing the Constition to get rid of the lame ducks. Make Obama and the new Congress take their postitions on December 1st every election year. |

November 20th, 2008 10:12 pm ET I have a question: |
|
| Christopher |
November 20th, 2008 10:12 pm ET The US auto industry is linked to one in 10 of American jobs. Wake up Congress!! This economy is on the precipice of another great depression. If you allow the auto industry to fail…you have allowed the US consumers to fall into the abyss. |
|
| tammy |
November 20th, 2008 10:12 pm ET ballout wall street and auto dealers, why, american’s don’t have money to buy stocks or cars………bail out americans. money in our hands winds up in thiers. |
|
| DonRoberto |
November 20th, 2008 10:12 pm ET just wondering, all the talk is about the ‘big three” auto makers…just wondering…how about TOYOTA who is in the U.S. using american workers?? yes, they dont allow a union..BUT..something is working there. |
|
| kathy may |
November 20th, 2008 10:13 pm ET what are they going to due with the ceo,s big million dollar saleries ? are they going to be asked to take a pay cut as they should ! their is the money they need to stay a float |
|
| Bob Kaplow |
November 20th, 2008 10:13 pm ET Why not suggest to GM in a restructure to do the Toyota print. Toyota has Lexas and Toyota. GM has too much duplication. Consolidate to Chevrolet and Cadillac. They have the same suv’s in 4 of their divisions. |
|
| Paula from Texas |
November 20th, 2008 10:13 pm ET Tell those Detroit CEOs to please drive an automobile to Washington next week — make a statement from behind the wheel of a great American car! We’re pulling for you guys, but you gotta step on the gas for the cash. |
|
| Christina Kahn |
November 20th, 2008 10:13 pm ET This auto industry crisis is a perfect opportunity to use these workers to shore up public transportation. These auto companies lobbied hard against public transport to keep us dependant on cars. Their time has passed. |

November 20th, 2008 10:13 pm ET I’m getting sick of congress and the media alike decrying the fact that Obama can’t do anything about the bottom falling out. Obama is not our President and we need to deal with it. the question we should be asking is where is our President? Is Bush such a good-for-nothing that the country must be in solution limbo and financial free fall and still he does nothing? If so, then I don’t think the U.S. is a democracy, more than it is a WHAT-THE-HELL-OCRACY. In a true democracy, a bad President would be taken out of office and not left there to run us over the cliff. The culprit is Bush, not Obama. |
|
| Imani from Maryland |
November 20th, 2008 10:14 pm ET This is a very dumb question, i know, but know one i have asked can give me a straight answer. Why can’t we just print more money? |

November 20th, 2008 10:14 pm ET hey everybody! I cannot believe where we have gone… we keep blaming politicians, but really greed, in the business community, is NOT good either – - unlike what Gordon Gekko said. |

November 20th, 2008 10:14 pm ET Why does this stuff always happen in the winter around Christmastime? Why doesn’t this stuff happen in the summer? The one time ppl need money and companies need ppl to buy stuff, we have no money!!! |

November 20th, 2008 10:14 pm ET As an international viewer from Chile i am deeply concerned about your country’s economy. If the United states goes down, the whole world will suffer including my own. Hopefully Obama can fix this and soon! |
|
| Rikki, Fargo, ND |
November 20th, 2008 10:14 pm ET I think that it is important that we assist big auto. If something isn’t done I fear for all the jobs that will be lost as a result. But I do also think that if we do end up bailing out big auto there needs to be a guarantee that those jobs will remain in the United States. |
|
| Sandi |
November 20th, 2008 10:14 pm ET As a person whom have absolutely nothing to lose because I currently have no stock. My position as a person who has nothing to lose is all for the try something new agenda. This is the perfect time to start using alternative energy. We have a work force out there right now. It’s time for America to revamp and be the innovative machine it once was! |

November 20th, 2008 10:14 pm ET An alternative to a govenment bail-out of the big 3 automakers would be to give incentives to our U.S. oil companies invest their |

November 20th, 2008 10:14 pm ET I’m sure the Big 3 have plans for the bridge money, the big question is how well they can execute the plan. |
|
| Kate Merchant |
November 20th, 2008 10:15 pm ET We should not give money to the car industry until they provide a detailed financil plan on how they are going to spend the money. They need to cut jets, saleries and fat at the corporate top. Three cheers for the Senate for having the balls to hold the line. |
|
| Andy |
November 20th, 2008 10:15 pm ET This all sounds extremely gloomy, I am a Canadian, how might I anticipate how this mess is going to affect me, your neighbor to the North. |
|
| Maureen, Georgia |
November 20th, 2008 10:15 pm ET The Big 3 should not only give congress a plan for how they’ll use the money but if they get the bail out they should also give account for the money as it is spent, we need transparency. |
|
| CaseyJ - Palm Springs, CA |
November 20th, 2008 10:15 pm ET I find it so interesting that there is so much focus on Obama rescuing everything and virtually no discussion about the Bush administration. I think many of us have simply moved on and Obama represents the only sign of hope and humility. Deflation? Wow, maybe we should all just move to South America? |
|
| Caren in Bisie, Congo |
November 20th, 2008 10:15 pm ET Erica, I’m hearing more people say not to worry too much about your 401k if you aren’t retiring any time soon, just because it is certain to go back up again. Not that I have one, but I’m hoing that’s true for everyone else! |
|
| Frank - NY |
November 20th, 2008 10:15 pm ET Nothing the government has done has worked – time for the government to be somewhere else.. American car companies need to reorganize – NOT be given a blank check that doesn’t do anything. The change we need is less government – not more. |
|
| Bill Brooks |
November 20th, 2008 10:15 pm ET I hope all these Republicans are proud of themselves 8 years ago by putting someone in the Whitehouse that has no idea when he is doing. He and his jokes in Washington have really screwed up the country royally!! He must be really proud of his acomplishments. Why should he care, he is set for life. |
|
| Phyllis |
November 20th, 2008 10:15 pm ET I am from Toronto Canada. We have problems with the auto industry big 3 here as well. My question is quite simple. Why do the big 3 have to come up with a plan before getting funds, while AIG got all that money without any plan and appears to be usining it unwisely? |
|
| pati mc., camp hill, pa |
November 20th, 2008 10:15 pm ET If the auto industry relies on the oil companies and vice versa, why can’t the rich as crud oil companies bail out their “buddies”? You know they have to be in cahoots as it is! Seriously. |
|
| David, Indiana |
November 20th, 2008 10:15 pm ET Hi Anderson, Erica, everyone. Maybe the market should leave the table after making gains and come back the next day and try again. I do feel market needs direction. We keep plunging into the red then skyrocketing upward, it’s a jarring experience. The market has shown incredible resilience this year, though. |
|
| Kirk in Michigan |
November 20th, 2008 10:16 pm ET Where is the rigorous economic analysis to show us that bailing out bloated industries that we have some nostalgic “apple pie” attachment to is ANY better than bailing out, say, thousands of tiny startups–with competent management–in industries that the U.S. actually has a prayer of completing globally in? Bail out the car companies so they can fall prey to the Japanese in another few years, our money down the drain? |
|
| Jim Alberts |
November 20th, 2008 10:16 pm ET I am 48 years old and very concerned about our retirement. It appears that the old thought of a 10% stock return over time may be changing. I’m awful tired of the failures being rewarded with bail outs, while those of us making our payments foot the bills. Hard to save that way. |

November 20th, 2008 10:16 pm ET Can we stop talking about Sarah Palin, please?? |
|
| Karen |
November 20th, 2008 10:16 pm ET The Big Three did the damage to themselves with greed, lack of responsiveness to environmental and economic pressures and their huge golden parachutes and other corporate abuses of monies that should have been reinvested into new product research and to save the consumers money with better offers on the cars they sell or don’t sell. Let them go into bankruptcy like other companies that don’t change with the times and are badly in need of reorganization and streamlining of financial abuses by management. |

November 20th, 2008 10:16 pm ET Hey Jan, you know what? Somehow I even hope it will change the world´s citizens for caring more about our planet and living together on it |

| Dan, Denver, CO |
November 20th, 2008 10:16 pm ET I think the lawmakers – congress and the president needs to understand that our economy is based on “consumption”. We are constantly trying to fix the “production” side of the equation. We need to impart people the ability to consume, and consume more! |
|
| Mindy Chatsworth, Ca. |
November 20th, 2008 10:16 pm ET Anderson, I beg you not to show that video of Sarah Palin and the turkeys being slaughtered in the background. I saw it on another cable show and had to turn it off. PLEASE – at least warn your viewers before you show it. It’s not something that children should see and some people may not be able to handle it. Thanks! |

November 20th, 2008 10:16 pm ET The US Dollar is stronger against the Euro than it has been in years. Even in the case of deflation, the EU’s value would fall faster than our own. Over the last year, only the Yen has substantially gained value against the dollar. |

November 20th, 2008 10:17 pm ET Sometimes it takes extreme events to inspire extreme innovation. The “Big 3″ facing bankruptcy opens the door for the little known but much “greener” upstart car manufacturers. The times change and those who’ve adapted best succeed most. The “Big 3″ had their era, perhaps this is the signaling of a new one? |
|
| Mike, Syracuse NY |
November 20th, 2008 10:17 pm ET Companies will slash jobs just on anticipation of loss of sales. Right now we are in a mob mentality. Someone needs to step up and calm people down. |

| Grayce |
November 20th, 2008 10:17 pm ET If the Big 3 don’t have a plan, why doesn’t Congress have one for them….fire CEO’s and Board of Directors; no bonuses; no golden parachutes; no one earns over $300,000 until the company returns to a profit; and the unions should back off. Do the workers want $44/hour, vs. $77/hour, and have a job? I would bet they would. IF the Big 3 agree, help them out! |

November 20th, 2008 10:17 pm ET Toyota isn’t an American car dealer!!! They are foreign. They weren’t started here, they were started in a different country…that’s why they aren’t part of the Big 3. And they make better cars for better prices!! |
|
| Mark (Pflugerville TX) |
November 20th, 2008 10:17 pm ET Why is the auto bailout such at such a crisis point now when its been reported that they have enough cash to get them thru 2009? |
|
| Asit |
November 20th, 2008 10:18 pm ET Really ? Do we really need a woods metaphor ? Just tell us things the way it is. Also, Anderson, your tie is creating interference patterns today – very distracting. |
|
| Jolene, St. Joseph, MI |
November 20th, 2008 10:18 pm ET Turkeys and Sarah Palin. Did Anderson just say “gobble”? OK, now you got me interested…. |

November 20th, 2008 10:18 pm ET Thanks EJ and Megan. |

November 20th, 2008 10:18 pm ET Hillary is SoS? Seriously? OMG….go Obama! Go Hillary! |

| Jim, |
November 20th, 2008 10:18 pm ET the stock market is following the country’s morals- both sinking fast. |

| Tim in Chapel Hill, North Carolina |
November 20th, 2008 10:18 pm ET The auto execs deserved the grilling they got from Congress, but why did they not demand the same accountability from the financial institutions that have benefitted from the bailout? It doesn’t seem like we have any idea of where that money went – except a suspicion that it is benefitting the same institutions and individuals that caused this crisis – certainly not the average citizen that is suffering. |
|
| richard la fleur |
November 20th, 2008 10:19 pm ET I do not think a bailout should be granted to the auto companies. There has to be a point where accountability is established and these corporate executives brought into alignment. For too many years the auto industry has operated under their own rules and now is the time for a restructure. |

November 20th, 2008 10:19 pm ET That is no surprise always know Hilary was going to be Secretary of State unless the ‘friendship’ breaks down. |
|
| Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio |
November 20th, 2008 10:19 pm ET Jolene, I have to see a plan before I would even consider giving the Big 3 a loan and then I would make sure conditions were in place to make sure they followed through with the proposed plan. |
|
| Audrey, UT |
November 20th, 2008 10:19 pm ET I am following Obama’s lead of remaining cool and calm through the crisis. Hold onto your 401K and stocks. Keeping your head is always a good idea. Panic led the depression of the 30’s. |
|
| tom |
November 20th, 2008 10:19 pm ET I’m no Sara Palin fan, but enough is enough. I’ve seen this turkey story on every newscast and it just isn’t worth the airtime. And don’t worry about the stock market, the Dow will be up over 500 points tomorrow. |

November 20th, 2008 10:19 pm ET It is time to that Washington understands that unless the taxpayers are bailed out first, nothing will fix the mess that the last 8 years created. |

November 20th, 2008 10:20 pm ET How do Hillary’s credentials compare to the likes of John Kerry or Bill Richardson??? Secretary of Education I could understand, but Sec of State? |

November 20th, 2008 10:20 pm ET I hope that your source is correct, though I’ll miss having Senator CLinton as my Senator from New York. |

November 20th, 2008 10:20 pm ET Do not support auto bailout. Why should all of us pay for benefits for auto workers thay the rest of us do not have? |
|
| krish |
November 20th, 2008 10:20 pm ET I wonder, given where we are today, what is the worst-case scenario for this wall street turmoil? Is it actually possible for stock market to go non-existent? (some sort of apocalypse?). |
|
| Curtis |
November 20th, 2008 10:20 pm ET “If you allow the auto industry to fail…you have allowed the US consumers to fall into the abyss.” Why not? We’ve gone this far, might as well put all of our chips in. At least that way we’re all in the same boat so none of us can be ignored or favored as we head through a recovery. Remember, we WILL recover. |
|
| Mike, Syracuse NY |
November 20th, 2008 10:21 pm ET Audrey, Obama’s ‘cool and calm’ demeaner could easily be ‘I haven’t got a clue either’. |

November 20th, 2008 10:21 pm ET Yay!!! I am so exciting for Hillary Clinton to be nominated as Secretary of State……… Thanks Gloria and David. |

November 20th, 2008 10:21 pm ET In reference to 401k i made the best decision ever which involves me moving my money from 401k to an ira account and then requested my money, will get taxed at the end of the year but invested some of the money on an CD and with the rest paid off some of the critical bills…. |

November 20th, 2008 10:21 pm ET I’m a college student and a novice stock trader. Tomorrow I will start on a Ramen Noodle diet to make up for the staggering losses I incurred today. I know it’s not Barack’s responsibility but he needs to take the reins of America’s future if George Bush stays in hiding. |
|
| MaryBeth |
November 20th, 2008 10:21 pm ET @ Mike: I agree! We all need to stay calm. Panicking at this point will only cause the situation to go to Hell in a handbasket even faster than it already is. |

November 20th, 2008 10:21 pm ET It is intuitively obvioius to the most casual observer that representatives of the big three failed their mission and were “floating without foundation.” |

November 20th, 2008 10:21 pm ET It is not wise to throw good money after bad. Instead of giving money to the old businesses of the past with lousey management, why not give it to the new businesses of the future? Do not try to save old management. Instead create new jobs for the future. Use the money to become energy independant. |
|
| Ken |
November 20th, 2008 10:21 pm ET If the CEOs and the UAW President think that this Loan or Bail out is just a temporary thing then why don’t they each invest their own personal fortunes in the Loan? This money will be spent under their Leadership and direction. Let them put some skin in the game. Do they have enough confidence in their own Leadership ? Or would they rather just risk the Taxpayers money ? |
|
| Kathy, Chicago |
November 20th, 2008 10:21 pm ET I think that the fact that Hillary is married to a former president probably slows things down. I think Pres Clinton deserves to have some privacy. Maybe there are things he can’t reveal. |
|
| Maureen, Georgia |
November 20th, 2008 10:22 pm ET Kahy May, I agree with you that the ceo’s shoul take a pay cut to help their companies keep afloat, the rest of us have to be giving up a lot including losing jobs. |
|
| EJ (USA) |
November 20th, 2008 10:22 pm ET I do like Hillary and have no problem with her being Secretary of State. I admire her strength and persistance. I did wonder about her campaign before but I think she’s great for that post. |

November 20th, 2008 10:22 pm ET They may be leaking all these names to see what type of feedback they draw. |
|
| Rob, Seattle, WA |
November 20th, 2008 10:22 pm ET Poor strategic direction, poor products, and a demanding and expensive UAW Union does not warrant a tax payer bailout. Let the companies go belly up. Rewarding the big three with a $25 billion bailout is not the answer. |
|
| California Scott |
November 20th, 2008 10:22 pm ET Vaughn – One of the beautiful things about investing in Green energy – at least in terms of generating power for homes, etc – is that it needs to be located near when the energy users are for efficiency of transmission. This means at least a portion of the jobs will be spread out everywhere, installing wind or solar power generating facilities, etc. Of course, the R&D will likely be where current high-tech R&D already exists, like near me here in Silicon Valley area. |

November 20th, 2008 10:22 pm ET Gergen, I am SO tried of this feminist thing with Hill. Hire the right person for the job! We have to get over this color and sex thing in America! |

November 20th, 2008 10:22 pm ET My concern about this Auto Industry “Loan!” is if we need to build military equipment real fast we will have bankrupted all our engineers and factories. Poor homeland security! faith |

November 20th, 2008 10:22 pm ET Yay Hillary!!! |

| Hannah Marner |
November 20th, 2008 10:22 pm ET Oh, Erica! That’s horrible. I’m sorry. And Imani: I’m pretty sure it has to do with the value of the dollar. If too much money is printed, then the dollar value goes down. I think it has something to do with the amount of gold the nation has on hand, as well. At least, that’s what they’re tossing around out here – there’s a big debate going on as to whether or not we should reopen the gold mine. |
|
| Paul |
November 20th, 2008 10:23 pm ET Anderson, after looking at my 401k statement today I’m quite confident that I will be able to retire in 50 years! Slight problem, I’m 40! So I guess I will die at my job…Nice feeling… |
|
| Eva |
November 20th, 2008 10:23 pm ET I am a more mature senior on a fixed income and I am concerned about how this is going to affect me. I don’t want more people to loose their jobs, but I don’t approve of the car manufacturers just being given tax dollars to use and then come back again to ask for more which has happened in the past. I think accountability is first priority. The big 3 should be accountable to all of us “middle-class”!! LOL |
|
| Jason Widerstrand |
November 20th, 2008 10:23 pm ET Being this crisis is not a ‘local’ thing, and financial markets around the world rely on each other, are there any ‘more-than-hopeful’ strategies around the world that might be working? Are the global debts/deficits just on hold right now? |
|
| pati mc., camp hill, pa |
November 20th, 2008 10:23 pm ET For Obama to decide on whom he will chose has to be the most daunting task ever. Like Gloria and David have said, it is like a big puzzle and the “pieces” must fit together just so. That was a great analygy. Still, it will be iinteresting to see the end result here. I hope they do not leak too much too soon. He needs time to vet these folks and to make certain that they are the perfect fit. |
|
| Jolene, St. Joseph, MI |
November 20th, 2008 10:23 pm ET @Jo Ann: I agree, the plan needs to be known, but who is going to be the watch dog if it’s approved? Not sure I trust Congress to be the ones to watch over the Big 3, especially with what has been done to date with the financial side of the bailout. |
|
| jason |
November 20th, 2008 10:24 pm ET The reality is this – the more the media calls the big three investment a bailout, the more people will be driven to apposing it. I respectfuly disagree with David Gegin, since bush is the president, he should be out there giving speeches. People want to see Obama out there because they truethfuly think Bush doesn’t have the capacity to handle this crises, however we must respect the rules…. there’s only one presiden at a time. |

November 20th, 2008 10:24 pm ET Finally! Ed Henry is inside! Why do the Chicago ppl always have to be outside? It is wicked cold and wicked windy here tonight. |

November 20th, 2008 10:24 pm ET Bailout the “Big Three”! What for? America has living well beyond its means for years. Who will be buying these cars anytime soon? Let’s face it, if half the people that have bought new cars would have been forced to use cash they had available….they couldn’t afford to. Wake up America! We all have to live within our means! There has been a “Credit Availability Bubble” for years…… It just POPPED!!… |

November 20th, 2008 10:24 pm ET I think it’s funny how CNN keeps saying “coming up next….Sarah Palin and a turkey!” haha… are you going to show it at the end of the hour!? haha, I just can’t wait! |

November 20th, 2008 10:25 pm ET I still have my job, but I’m not getting any work hours anymore…and that during the busiest season in retail… I thought New York City was in a lot better shape than Ohio! I guess there are so many more people where you live. |
|
| Gary Houston, TX |
November 20th, 2008 10:25 pm ET No employee should be making more than $250K now at the big 3 and the UAW workers need to take a 40% pay AND benefit cut. |

November 20th, 2008 10:25 pm ET Hillary Clinton as Sec. of State is an excellent choice for not only America, but for the world around us ! Now if we can just get Warren Buffet for the Treasury Secretary position !! |

November 20th, 2008 10:25 pm ET I have to say I think Hillary Clinton is a strange choice for Secretary of State. Another cabinet post, maybe. But I don’t see Sen. Clinton as top-notch diplomat material. |

| Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio |
November 20th, 2008 10:25 pm ET Mike, I think people would be calm if they thought somebody had an idea how to address these serious issues, but it looks like they are all clueless, including Obama. |
|

November 20th, 2008 10:25 pm ET What are the chances that we can get Bush to resign now! Every day with Bush is a day without the hope we so desparately need. |

November 20th, 2008 10:25 pm ET Anderson, can you clarify the focus of the automakers aid? Is it a bailout or is it a loan? |
|
| MaryBeth |
November 20th, 2008 10:26 pm ET LOL “Kabuki dance”? I love David Gergen. He is right: Obama cannot sit and do nothing. He needs to make his presence known and felt. Bush is MIA and we need to have a leader, besides Pelosi or Reid. |

November 20th, 2008 10:26 pm ET Supposedly the President of the UAW said there would be no union givebacks. That’s like a parasite sucking so much blood that the host dies. If they can’t figure our that their greed has been part of the problem, they should end up unemployed. |

November 20th, 2008 10:26 pm ET Nice woodsy piece by Tom Foreman on the auto makers: I think when you’re lost in the woods though you’re supposed to stay where you are until someone finds you – unless a “Bear (market)” is chasing you – and then it’s flight or fight, or play dead – flight being a bail out – fight being restructuring management, taking the hit, and actually thinking – or thirdly playing dead – see Chapter 11. |
|
| Donna |
November 20th, 2008 10:26 pm ET By choosing Hillary we are relying on a woman solely with name recognition to be our Secretary of State. John Kerry is fluent in multiple language, has vast experience on the foreign relations committee. Bill Richardson served as ambassador to the U.N. and has negotiated for the release of hostages. He has one of the most impressive foreign relations resumes of anyone. How does Hillary win out? |

November 20th, 2008 10:26 pm ET The Big 3 are trying to use blackmail with the threat of job loss on many levels to get the financing they want. No remorse…just more of the same. |

November 20th, 2008 10:27 pm ET When will Obama go to Hawaii to bury his grandmother? I am extremley disapointed in him in this regard. He’s had several weekends since November 4th, he needs to show some respect. His relatives need closure as well. |

| David, Indiana |
November 20th, 2008 10:27 pm ET Jolene, I heard that Bob Gettlefinger press conference too and he did the best job of sticking up for the auto industry, Oh this is good news about Hillary Clinton, I’m so happy about this |

November 20th, 2008 10:31 pm ET I think Obama should give up the blackberry. President Bush and Clinton both had to give up the email and computer use. The world just has too many people who could do Obama harm. |

November 20th, 2008 10:31 pm ET I wonder if Senator Clinton was promised Secretary of state before the election, way back when they met after the nomination was decided. |

November 20th, 2008 10:32 pm ET That is outrage for employees who hacked Obama’s e-mail! I am glad that Verizon fired all employees. that is so dumb. |

| Sergio (Sterling, Virginia) |
November 20th, 2008 10:32 pm ET That may be an idea though. Hum, give us the 700 billion dollars which maybe about 200K per person now in the US (taxpayers) and impose that we all at least buy an American car with that money. I will put my deposit on the the new volt immediately. |

November 20th, 2008 10:33 pm ET i used to work for tmobile and it is real easy to tap into celebrity and public figures mobile phone accounts. a lot has to do with the quality of employees and their obsession with the people in the main stream media. |

| Lori from IL |
November 20th, 2008 10:33 pm ET Anderson, I read an article in the Chicago Trib a few days ago about Obama needing to give up his Blackberry when taking office in January. It’s something to do with the law requiring presidential e-mail to be a matter of public record. I have a Verizon Blackberry — your story makes me a little nervous! |

November 20th, 2008 10:35 pm ET Good stars. Some people just don’t know when to leave other people alone. Just because people are public figures does not mean that the concept of privacy is automatically defaulted. |

November 20th, 2008 10:35 pm ET Those employees should be fired, a breech of privacy, I’m sure they signed a privacy statement. |

November 20th, 2008 10:35 pm ET They have the guy who tapped into Palin’s e-mails. Homeland Security at it’s finest again. Our President Elect can get his privacy compromised, how safe is the average person? This is ridiculous. |
|
| EJ (USA) |
November 20th, 2008 10:36 pm ET Whatever happened to the person who hacked Sarah Palins email? That was a “he.” Some Congressman’s son in Tennessee. I think he was taken care of. |

November 20th, 2008 10:36 pm ET Why would we loan GM, Ford and Chrysler $25 billion, when we could buy all three companies at full price for only $18.5 billion? |

November 20th, 2008 10:36 pm ET JoAnn, of course those CEOs won’t admit greed. I’m certain they believe they are entitled to the compensation they receive. It’s truly disgusting… |
|
| Isaac from Texas |
November 20th, 2008 10:36 pm ET I really think that the bail out was a mistake because it placed money on wall street’s pockets rather than us the middle class citizens…. and 401k is just a nighmare for us…. |
|
| Caren in Bisie, Congo |
November 20th, 2008 10:37 pm ET Lori, think about it- Obama’s would be the # 1 most hacked email ever if he kept his Crackberry. I think it’s for his own good. They aren’t even allowed to have laptops, though I think Bush may actually be the first pres who has one. |
|
| Jen |
November 20th, 2008 10:37 pm ET Hey Erica, Not so funny…. I just checked my portfolio yesterday too! my portfolio fell 51% since September. I had exposure to Lehman and Morgan Stanley. Oooouuuchhh! But know what? we have our health, a job and a thread of humor, we’ll live through this. |
|
| Mike, Syracuse NY |
November 20th, 2008 10:37 pm ET Anderson, technically Obama can’t actually nominate anyone for anything until he is sworn in. He can only make public who he intends to nominate. |
|
| MiamiRene |
November 20th, 2008 10:38 pm ET it is no surprise to me that they may have looked at Obamas cell records it’s very easy access and its done all the time I worked with one of the big cell companies and many employees would do it just for fun to see what celebrities had accounts, it was done for curiosity not with any intentions of doing something with the information. This practice happens all the time anywhere your information is it’s looked at plain and simple . It’s part of the information age. |

November 20th, 2008 10:38 pm ET Wanna boost the economy and put this economic crisis behind us all? How bout a $100,000.00 stipend to all taxpayers….we will spend it as fast as the idiots who put this country in such dismay. The American People would put us back on track buying new cars!!! |
|
| Jean |
November 20th, 2008 10:38 pm ET If Obama doesnt have to worry about foreign policy stuff because of Colin Powell and Condi Rice and that Snowcroft guy, when will he deal with the economy!!! I think the economy is important and he seems like he isnt being |
|
| MaryBeth |
November 20th, 2008 10:38 pm ET @Caren: thank you. I think they are right: Obama doesn’t leak anything unless they want it leaked. If they are sure of something, THEN it is leaked…not before. This is, suprisingly, a very tightlipped organization. |
|
| Renee |
November 20th, 2008 10:39 pm ET Personally I think Obama should have put the records in the name of alias when he started his campaign. Celebrities use alias names all the time. |

| elisabeth meier |
November 20th, 2008 10:39 pm ET well… hopefully Hillary will know too: “… it´s clear that he is the boss….” |

November 20th, 2008 10:39 pm ET Then thats what the government should do…BUY IT!! Its not an option to let them fold there are too many other jobs that they affect that have nothing to do with big 3 |

November 20th, 2008 10:39 pm ET Don’t you think it would weaken America to lose the last 3 auto makers? faith |

November 20th, 2008 10:39 pm ET This lady ran for the president, came very close. What else dont we know about her? I also hope when this administration takes over, they will have learned how to control leaks. |

November 20th, 2008 10:39 pm ET Its Amazing That President Elect Obama Is Being Pressured About Cabinet Picks Who Have No Power Until January 2009. While “Current” President Bush Is Laughing At The World. What Will The “Big 3″ Do With All The Manufactured Cars At The Plants & Sitting On Lots Around The Country That People Cant Afford.? Why Give Money Too Companies To Make Cars Most People Cannot Afford? Answers Please. |

| EJ (USA) |
November 20th, 2008 10:39 pm ET Geez, what a shame about Obama and the whole Verizon issue. Sprint is a disaster as well. Maybe even more so. I’ve heard the most number of complaints about Sprint. |
|
| Isaac from Texas |
November 20th, 2008 10:39 pm ET i really think obama shouldnt loose his sleep over the Verizon issue, because this was just a very curious employee who maybe just want it to confront Obama personaly perhaps thru the phone about disliking his picks to run with him at the white house so….ahah is not that bad…. and yes definitly switch to Sprint please… |
|
| Merry Pearson |
November 20th, 2008 10:40 pm ET If the current President isn’t doing anything about the terrible economy and if we can have only one President at a time, why doesn’t Bush step down and let President Elect Obama get started? Merry in Chesapeake Beach, MD |
|
| Imani from Maryland |
November 20th, 2008 10:40 pm ET Lori… do not be too nervous I think it’s more likely for someone to pick through your mail than you phone records. |

November 20th, 2008 10:40 pm ET OMG! Citibank is worth less than Home Depot? Isn’t that a fact to knock you for a loop? |

November 20th, 2008 10:40 pm ET Didnt autoworkers support Obama? |
|
| pati mc., camp hill, pa |
November 20th, 2008 10:41 pm ET Why are you guys surprised that Bush is not stepping up? He has been MIA for a while now, right? It’s too bad that Obama could not just step in. If only! January cannot get here quickly enough IMHO. |
|
| jonathan houston |
November 20th, 2008 10:41 pm ET all cell phone company employees have to sign a customer propietary network information privacy policy that is made to protect customers.. its a shame that they would do that to obama. |
|
| Asit |
November 20th, 2008 10:41 pm ET I always thought that that customer service agent I am talking to at my cellphone company can look at the same bill and same call records that I am looking at. They are, however, not supposed to look at individual call records. They are definitely not supposed to look at your voice mail. What do they really have an access to ? |
|
| Rikki, Fargo, ND |
November 20th, 2008 10:41 pm ET I don’t think it really matters what cell phone provider he uses…the ability to be hacked is the same regardless of the provider. |
|
| Corey Howell (Houston TX) |
November 20th, 2008 10:41 pm ET What could occur if Obama was allowed to carry a Blackberry: 1) Somebody could decrypt his wireless connection and intercept his outgoing emails and whatever else he was doing on there 2) He could leave it somewhere (God forbid such a terrible thing happen) 3) No paper trail, no accountability |
|
| Mike, Syracuse NY |
November 20th, 2008 10:42 pm ET I’m not sure why so many people keep talking about Hillary’s foreign policy credentials. Being married to the President doesn’t make you a foreign policy expert, nor has she served on Senate committees related to foreign policy. Yes she has tremendous name recognition abroad, but what else? I think the rest of Obama’’s announced picks so far have been qualified. Hillary, not so much. |
|
| Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio |
November 20th, 2008 10:42 pm ET I’d like to know if they will be forced to “bend” the rules to get Clinton approved. |
|
| Gary |
November 20th, 2008 10:42 pm ET This is a national emergency and the transition should be accelerated. |
|
| Margie |
November 20th, 2008 10:42 pm ET Yes, Obama needs to make some headway with who’s going to take on the economic issues in their administration. While they’re wading through the drama with the Clintons; people are really on edge with their financial well-being. Early inauguration sounds like a great idea! |
|
| lori |
November 20th, 2008 10:42 pm ET omg, David Gergin reads the AC360 blog site!! |
|

November 20th, 2008 10:42 pm ET that’s right…watch out Anderson…. if they can look at Obama’s records…they could be watching YOU! Lori…. |
|
| Naissa, South Texas |
November 20th, 2008 10:43 pm ET EJ, lol, I love Sprint. It was a completely biased point of view because I am a Sprint customer. Fact of the matter is that none of us are safe from anything. For all I know, my Instinct could be getting hacked right now (God I hope not), and I wouldn’t even know it! And for the record, I have had no problems with Sprint. |
|
| California Scott |
November 20th, 2008 10:43 pm ET Did you hear that you all? David Gergen is saying it’s OUR (AC 360 bloggers) fault that the stock market tanked today !! (joking). |
|
| Renee |
November 20th, 2008 10:43 pm ET Gergen: Can you broker a deal between Obama, Paulson and Bernake? You need to get these men in a room and knock some sense into them. Let me know if you need any help. I’ll bring the ball bat — wood or aluminum. |
|
| melissa |
November 20th, 2008 10:43 pm ET Wht haven’t we heard a word form out current president about the auto industry? |
|
| Mike, Syracuse NY |
November 20th, 2008 10:44 pm ET David Gergen, usually when the President doesn’t display leadership, Congress uses it as an opportunity to step up. Pelosi and Reid seem content to just let the clock run out too. Is it that no one really knows what to do, so everyone does nothing? |
|
| Doug - Rhode Island |
November 20th, 2008 10:44 pm ET Whenever the market over-reacts like it is now (either on the upside or downside) it creates exceptional opportunities. This is an emotional market that has created many underpriced stocks waiting to be bought for their long-term potential – and with super dividends in the meantime. |
|
| Jane |
November 20th, 2008 10:44 pm ET Is David Gergen saying Paulson should have gone ahead and bought those toxic assets? clearly that was not going to help, and I am not saying whatever he is doing is working. How do you buy something you cannot value? |
|
| Keith |
November 20th, 2008 10:45 pm ET Please answer this question, why is the current President not out front and attempting to lead when needed? Is he simply not concerned about the future of this country that he lead to disaster? |
|
| EJ (USA) |
November 20th, 2008 10:46 pm ET No more Joe the Plumber! That guy irritates me to no end! |
|
| Ray |
November 20th, 2008 10:46 pm ET International corp. like GM and Ford have no patriotism. They have guted the auto industry in US and sent most of design engineering and manufacturing out of this country, let them bail them out . US auto industry will never be ok until health insurance problem is fixed |
|
| Rikki, Fargo, ND |
November 20th, 2008 10:46 pm ET Our prayers go out to the Attorney General…Hope everything is ok! |
|
| Corey Howell (Houston TX) |
November 20th, 2008 10:46 pm ET I still think it is hilarious that some people think they can steal an object THAT BIG like a 100 million dollar oil tanker and expect to somehow launder the GIANT item in some way or form. There is no way in hell that they could get away with it, unless they of course threaten to blow it to hell! |
|

November 20th, 2008 10:47 pm ET that guy w/ the turkey is hilarious. he looks so guilty trying to kill that turkey. |

November 20th, 2008 10:47 pm ET What in the world?! Joe the Plumber is writing a book?! What in the world are we going to learn from him?! Good grief, I’m calling a Publishing Company. |

November 20th, 2008 10:49 pm ET What a joke, all that money for a book deal to Joe the plumber about values what kind of values? This is unbelievable b.ut disgustingly true. |
|
| David, Indiana |
November 20th, 2008 10:49 pm ET Wow you kind of turned my day around with that news about Hillary Clinton, Anderson, that’s a bit of certainty on a very difficult day. Jolene, you were right a couple of days ago… Yes David Gergen, you just expressed something I agree with, there is some real uplift with this news about H.C., leadership things moving forward, this does give me confidence about how the economic crisis will be handled, the automakers hearings have been kind of distressing. |
|
| pati mc., camp hill, pa |
November 20th, 2008 10:49 pm ET Yikes! That was one unlucky turkey. Gross. I am glad you did not show the whole thing. 360 gang: You had better start passin’ around the Airborne. Erica has a cold and Anderson is sneezing his poor head off. Kev has taken to wearing a hat. You all are gettin’ sick. Turn up the heat for goodness sake. |

November 20th, 2008 10:52 pm ET When we talk about success, how are we defining the term “success?” I think of it in terms of positive relationships, at all levels. I could care little about money other than what it affords me to pursue and contribute to all of my relationships. |
|
| Hannah Marner |
November 20th, 2008 10:52 pm ET @ Pati – I noticed that, too…everyone is starting to have adverse reactions to Anderson’s “icy” temperatures where the thermostat is concerned! |

November 20th, 2008 10:55 pm ET There are so many self help books for success out there, but most of the time when you hear a real success story it goes against all the advice and the rules. |
|

November 20th, 2008 10:55 pm ET Who are the others who like that Beyonce’ video (besides women)? I’m guessing drag queens are emulating it already. |

|
| Jolene, St. Joseph, MI |
November 20th, 2008 10:56 pm ET Malcolm’s book sounds interesting. I like how he takes the concept of “outliers” and relates it to success and people. I always thought “outliers” were “out of control” points. |
