Marcello Lucero was walking to a friend’s house last weekend to watch a movie when his life came to a brutal end. The Ecuadorean native was allegedly beaten and stabbed by a group of teenagers who police said wanted “to beat up some Mexicans.”
Lucero’s death Saturday night on Long Island, New York was quickly labeled a hate crime by authorities. Unfortunately, it’s part of an underreported spike of hate crimes against Hispanics in the last few years. According to the FBI, Anti-Hispanic hate crimes have increased 40 percent since 2003.
Hispanic advocates blame a climate of harsh rhetoric surrounding the national immigration debate, and they surely have a point.
The Justice Department says that out of all bias crimes based on ethnicity, 62 percent target Hispanics, 38 percent everyone else. 62 percent! Though Hispanics are only 14 percent of the population. Those are some scary numbers.
These are young men who had the potential for bright futures ahead of them. What makes a person willing to give up everthing for a night of killing? What were there lives like that they would believe they have nothing to exist for? I'm not being an apologist, but I'm wondering how did we lose them.
It seems pretty evidenet that there is a surge of hate crimes stimulated from the current election of Barack Obama as president. There is an underlying current brewing. The current tidal wave of gun sales is just an indicator that something is about to happen. I don't see why there is so much hatred concerning Obama. This country has done so many horrible and ugly things to our black race. You would think that people would stop the ignorance. This country was built on the blood, sweat and tears of our people. This country was founded on hate and bloodshed. That is the very reason that our whole country is eroding. Why are blacks hated so much? We did no wrong to this country. We were stripped of everything as a people, but yet we still stand. I hope that the present ignorance will not escalate. I am afraid that there will be the worst civil war that this country has ever had. When history will be written about why the USA has fallen. Hatred will be it's indictment.
I think its time that those in our society that espouse such hatred, anti immigration, anti immigrant be held responsible for supporting and even encouraging such vial acts of violence against anyone they view as Non-American.
Whether or not intentional or not, these TV and Radio host have got to understand that people of hate, find solace in the hateful anti immigrant rhetoric being spoken on both mainstream and Talk Radio and TV. It’s time to stop this ridiculous, hateful spewing of hate and realize the consequences of your words – Words do hurt and sometimes even kill.
I have actually stopped watching some TV News shows because they have become so anti-immigrant and hateful. I encourage everyone else to and write those networks.
It is frightening to know that there are a lot people in this world who believe that they have the right to decide who gets to live and who deserves to die. No one has the right to decide that one life is less valuable than another. The focus should not be on who did what to whom. Instead, we need to focus on the value of every single life and the elimination of hate.
It's absolutely ridiculous the way Hispanics are treated in this country. I've known plenty of people who claim to be free of racial prejudice, who would rather bite their tongues than use a slur against a black person or a Jew, yet spew the most revolting, hateful invective against "Mexicans" at every opportunity. This sort of speech is always backed by some lame rationale about "real" Americans losing jobs, or something of that sort. Seems like a good-sized segment of our population always needs someone to hate, whether it be the Chinese, the Irish, blacks, etc. You can rationalize it all you want. I put it down to fear, bitterness and bone-headed ignorance. You can claim it's all just talk, but incidents like this show the violence that that sort of speech leads to. Most unfortunate, since we're all human beings, and all in this together.
It appears to me that we have to find somebody to hate at all times. Now that hating African Americans is not "cool", we have found our new target in the Hispanic community. I agree in that the actual emphasis in ilegal immigration issues have a lot to do with this fact, however lets not forget that some people need to look down to somebody else to be able to feel somewhat better about themselves. I would tell to these criminals to get a life, that killing inocent people is not going to make them better persons. I would also like to remind them that not all hispanics are illegal immigrants and that many of us play a very important role in our communities and that........yes, we can!!!!!!
Hate crimes, crimes of prejudice should carry a life sentence. This gruesome crimal activity clearly is the worst ... it is now the budding American equivalent of WWII mass murder.
