Barack Obama and wife Michelle get a tour of their new digs today when they meet with President Bush and wife Laura in Washington, DC at the White House. A meeting between the current President and the President-Elect is a tradition going back decades in the USA.
President Bush said this weekend that ensuring this transition is seamless would be a top priority for the rest of his time in office, “My administration will work hard to ensure that the next President and his team can hit the ground running.”
Obama and George are expected to meet in the Oval Office, while Laura shows Michelle around the White House property and gets her own briefing of what it’s like to be a First Lady. (and possibly to measure the drapes so they could redecorate the house in their own style? Hmmmm)
Obama has a list of former Presidents to seek advice from, men who are uniquely positioned to offer insights into running the country and what the job entails. Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and 2 Presidents named Bush. With 71 days until he enters the White House, he could probably use all the advice he gets! Ed Henry will give us the latest on this story tonight.
Already Obama’s transition team appears to be laying out an aggressive agenda. John Podesta, the head of this team, said yesterday that they are conducting an extensive review of President Bush’s executive orders to decide which ones should be kept and which should be replaced or amended.
Some reports indicate that Obama’s legal team has targeted more than 200 unilateral moves made in the past 8 years which they could overturn. We may assign a reporter tonight to tell us more about this story on AC360, which executive orders are on the chopping block?
Obama is also pushing Congress for at least part of an economic stimulus pkg before taking office. Given the jobs report on Friday, news of more bailout money for AIG and word that DHL Express may slash 9,500 jobs in the US, it’s no wonder that the economy is the #1 Job for Obama.
He said over the weekend “Immediately after I become President, I will confront this economic crisis head-on by taking all necessary steps to ease the credit crisis, help hardworking families and restore growth and prosperity.”
Randi Kaye has a story about the tone that the Obamas’ will set when they hit DC, and where will their hotspots be? Plus Jessica Yellin looks at Obama’s Chicago neighbors whose lives will never be the same given the media attention and security ring surrounding the Chicago street where Obama and his wife reside until they make their final move to D.C.
Let’s see if we can squeeze all that in tonight-see you later at 10pet

November 10th, 2008 9:09 am ET It is great news to hear that Obama plans on overturning hundreds of the President's mandates! I understand that he will concentrate on the economy. It will be interesting to see how many of those mandates concern the economy... |

November 10th, 2008 11:48 am ET Economic stimulus package. Hey, sounds like throwing money at people to keep them happy. Odd where have I seen this before, I swear somewhere in the past 8 years a certain president dd this, but who could it be? I agree with the writer, it will be interesting to see what is on the chopping block. Could government surveillance like FISA and the Patriot Act finally be amended to not break the Constitution by watching its people? Could wealthy people have their money taxed and middle-class families recieve tax relief? Could it be that capital gains taxes will be increased? Could we see healthcare being mandated upon the citizens? Will we see social security be privatized so only the richest can retire, or will it be fixed? Could we see spending moved around from drug companies to green jobs? Who knows, we will just have to see what change Obama will really bring to us. |

November 10th, 2008 12:25 pm ET I'm always glad to hear of any improvement that our government has about the economy. I only wish It wasn't better managed before they handed it over to a new president. Bush policies has aided in our nations debt and know Obama is left to fix the Bush problem. best of luck to our new president. change is what this country tursted. |

November 10th, 2008 12:26 pm ET It will take more than a year for Obama and his administration to cleanup behind Bush. It took Bush 8 years of doing nothing that created this mess. Bush did nothing in 8 years and we called him "Mr. President". No wonder the world was laughing at us. |

November 10th, 2008 1:55 pm ET I'm angry that AIG is getting another bailout when they had taken a junket to England not too long after the junket to celebrate their top sales people in CA. It's unfortunate the media did not publicize that more. Americans are being forced to pay companies for their mismanagement and that is not right. Anti-Obama people can forget about calling Obama a Socialist – Bush has already done that with all these bailouts. |

November 10th, 2008 4:29 pm ET I just wish the critics would hold off until President Elect Obama actually is sworn into office and has some time to do things. His powers right now are limited severely to studying the situation (which he is doing), surrounding himself with the people who will make his administration run smoothly (which he has started to do), and selecting his Cabinet (which I suspect he is already doing). As for the Executive Orders Bush has used to circumvent the Congress, over 600 of them, there are a LOT of them that should be on the chopping block. I think Bush knows this, and I'm SURE Congressional Republicans know this. The Patriot Act, however, was enacted by the Congress, and therefore will have to go through the complete procedures to be either amended or overturned. It was ill-advised, at the least. My hope is that Bush doesn't give away another ton of money to his buddies before he leaves office...it is so much harder to get them to return gifts that they refuse to acknowledge they've gotten. |
