Good Evening Anderson, Erica and Fellow Bloggers

Ken in NC   November 6th, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Good even Anderson and Erica and all Bloggers. Election is over and now the finger pointing has started on poor poor Sarah.

Wanda   November 6th, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Good evening Anderson and everyone. One more day to the weekend!

Martie   November 6th, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Good evening Anderson, Erica and bloggers.

Anthony   November 6th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

As Obama’s choice of chief of staff shows, his cabinet will be filled with persons who will invoke the change he envisions in an efficient and deliberate manner.
As for the girls, I hope they maintain as normal a life as possible. Maybe they’ll be fortunate enough to walk in the shoes of the Kennedy children, living a mostly seperate and private lifestyle.

Brandi-bottom of the boot   November 6th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Goodevening all. Hopefully tonite we will get back some normalcy in the news, if there is such a thing. lol

Hopefully Erica and Anderson will have more time to blog tonite as well.

Mike, Syracuse NY   November 6th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Wow, the DOW is down 10% since the elction. Not much of a confidence vote for Obama.

Chris from STL   November 6th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

If there are rich people out there, please buy some stocks! You won’t regret it in the long run …. please please help!!!

Rory - New York City   November 6th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Good evening everyone!!

andre benn   November 6th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

The fact that Ms. Palin is being discussed is testament to what was wrong with the GOP campaign. No way should she have been placed on the national stage given her experience and polarizing nature. She was the voice of negativity and smear on the campaign trail. While one accepts that its a political campaign, the president elect never fell for it and this is why the GOP failed. There was no formulated agenda or message that Americans could have bought into.

Wanda   November 6th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

The girls will be just fine. They are in a very healthy and stable family.

MaryBeth   November 6th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Anthony: I agree. I think Emanuel will be an awesome chief of staff. I think he will help Obama get things done. He knows DC…he knows the White House…he will be a major asset.

Darrell Wilson   November 6th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

The USA is the most politically mature country in the world. You have the capacity to evolve quickly and I love you.

Mike, Syracuse NY   November 6th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Anthony, one of the few private things that the press seems to still honor is first children. They pretty much left the Bush’s alone.

Jolene, St. Joseph, MI   November 6th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Hello bloggers: I found it funny that Rahm Emanuel has the nickname “Rahmbo”. Sounds like Obama is going with a fighter, possibly a maverick?

Manu (Washington DC)   November 6th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Gud evening Anderson, Erica and fellow bloggers

This is certainly an exciting time for Democrats, but Republicans are facing their harsh reality of a broken and divided party and fingers have definetly been pointing towards poor Sarah….

Chris from STL   November 6th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Pres. elect Obama …. please appoint your treasury sec soon … do something positive to lift the maket sentiments …

Minou, New York City   November 6th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Bill Richardson would be the best choice for Secretary of State IMHO.

Jeanette   November 6th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

What a difference a day makes…Bush staffed his cabinet to support his own as well as Dick Cheney’s personal agendas. Obama is staffing his cabinet to best support the people of the US.

Latha Kalaga   November 6th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Anderson
What is the role of David Plouffe going to be in the new administration.?

Mike, Syracuse NY   November 6th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

As a McCain guy, I don’t see the RNC’s problem with Emanuel. He’s more qualified for his new job than his boss.

Liv   November 6th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

it will be big change for the girls. New house, all the security, protocol….
i hope they will be able to keep them unspoiled and living normal life as much as possible.

Michael - Springfield, PA   November 6th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

I have to admit Iam not a big fan of Kerry being the potential Sec of State. We need a Strong person in the position. Gov Richardson would be a good person for that role

Michael, Canada   November 6th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Good evening, AC and America.

You have done well to elect Barack as your next President. I really hope that America is patient with him…..its better to make the right decision than a hasty decision. Most of the issues are complex.

Donna   November 6th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Re Emmanuel appointment. Its ironic. Barack used to be chided as being too “Kumbaya,” but when he uses his “steely spine” and appoints his own Pit Bull – sans lipstick – he gets just as much grief!

EJ (USA)   November 6th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Colin Powell or Caroline Kennedy for Secretary of Education

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   November 6th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Anderson, That is exactly what it is about! It is no coincidence that the first person he picked, Emanuel, is a well known Chicago partisan. How does this choice promote bi-partisanism?

Gregg   November 6th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Good evening Anderson / Erica / bloggers,,is everyone as glad as i am that this election is over? phew!! and now the GOP starts the finger pointing, and what is to happen to Lieberman? i say they need to oust him, after that stint with McCain………

kalayna   November 6th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

I sure hope that Emanuel is not another one of the chicago thugs that B. Obama is used to hanging out with

Minou, New York City   November 6th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

The daughters seem to be two very self-assured little girls…I’m sure they won’t have a problem living in the WH.

Barbara, Gaffney, SC   November 6th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Hello, Anderson and fellow bloggers.

Obama will want to surround himself with knowledgeable staff so his presidency will be what he promised. You do need Washington Insiders as well as republicans and democrats in order to carry out your plans.

Sarah   November 6th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Rahm Emanuel, a Washington insider, is the first appointee of the president promising change? My faith in politicians is waivering

MaryBeth   November 6th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

I think Kerry would be a horrible choice for Sec. of State. Someone like Colin Powell or Bill Richardson would be good.

matt   November 6th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Anderson…i just think President Elect Obama needs to use the momentum he has to mobilize his supporters and not hide away…i know it’s only been one day but still – people are ready and willing and it feels a little like a letdown right now

Max, Dallas, TX   November 6th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

I adore Rahm Emmanuel. This is shaping up to be a pretty inspiring cabinet.

Also, I’ve gotta say: Anderson, I really hoped that with the election done, you’d get back to doing field work. When are you going back to Iraq and Afghanistan? Will you cover the troubles in the Congo?

David, Indiana   November 6th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Hi Anderson, Erica, everyone blogging. Sounds like the Obama transition team is working “right out of the box” as has been said to ensure a smooth and effective transition.

Erica, I can’t get the webcast, I’m getting 360cam, but not webcast.

Adam Elk   November 6th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

John Kerry would be very helpful to the Obama campaign. I think Obama should choose some republicans too, because we should have a view from each side.

Linda Lou   November 6th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Colin Powell, Colin Powell, Colin Powell!

catherine gillis   November 6th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Howard Dean is too polarizing and lacks the diplomatic skills to work with both parties. He’s great as DNC, but not great for unifying the nation and acting on behalf of the nation.

Carol Holman   November 6th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

So far, they are all men. He had better get some women named to his top tier.

Jocelyn   November 6th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

I think Emanuel is a great choice an shows that he wants a do-er. I hope it’s Richardson for Sec of State. John Kerry would be a nightmare – a reminder of the failure of ‘04.

Rielly, NYC   November 6th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

I agree with, EJ. I think it is very important for Obama to choose some WOMEN for some if these positions.

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   November 6th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Mike, Syracuse NY, Not during the primaries they didn’t; at least not the Republican kids.

Rent   November 6th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

I think it’s a good idea for who he’s bringing in or has choices on because these people are experienced heavy hitters and Obama show’s to be a man of character, grace and common sense.

john w   November 6th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

hey anderson!!!! love love love your show.

i was wondering do you think that either of the clinton’s will be offered positions in the obama administration. also i just wonder these speeches that lots of people like lieberman and others where they say they are ready to unite. is this stuff just a show on television? its hard to believe after all the horrible things you hear them say throughout elections.

john w
bradenton fl

ellen   November 6th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy as UN Ambassador??? With all due respect, is that much better than Sarah Palin for VP? What are her relevant credentials other than perhaps her last name (and even thats a stretch)?

Susan Helms Daley   November 6th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

WHERE ARE THE WOMEN? Not one woman was even mentioned as a potential cabinet level appointment to Obama’s staff in this segment. I hope “change” doesn’t mean backwards change.

howard   November 6th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

I’d like to see Bill Cosby as secretary of education.

Di Findley from Iowa   November 6th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Most of the individuals being considered are white men. They may be capable white men…but not reflective of the rich diversity in our country and not consistent with President Elect Obama’s message of change.

Margaret   November 6th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

With his pick of Rahm Emanuel for chief of staff, it seems the US immediately loses credibility in being a fair broker for Middle East Peace. Is anyone going to talk about this?

Darrell   November 6th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

What about Hillary Clinton?

Jeanne   November 6th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

The Dow has nothing to do with Obama. The news today was grim reminder of the horrific economic condition we find ourselves in, Tomrrow’s news will be worse.

Blaming any of this on Obama is the height of ignorance.

Cynthia   November 6th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Any talk of women contenders for the cabinet?

Marvin Jones   November 6th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Anderson, I think keeping Gates would be a very good idea to close out the Iraq war and brign our troops home with someone as laison whos knowledgeable of the current status quo. Colin welcome back! Obama should look to T. Boone for his Energy advisor or secretary.

Thanks,
Marvin of VB, AR

Jeff   November 6th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

I think it would move mountains if Obama asked McCain to be in his cabinet.

Jean - Dallas   November 6th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Great pick….now we can get down to business and get something done for the american people and pull this economy out of the ditch.

MaryBeth   November 6th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Jo Ann: I don’t think he would have chosen a Republican for Chief of Staff, but I think Emanuel is known for getting things done, and compromises when he needs to.

Louis   November 6th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Anderson, any word on ED. Secatary? Here in NC we are hearing former NC Gov. Jim Hunt? You heard anything?

Junior McHaffey   November 6th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Why doesn’t Barry Obama select Rush Limbaugh as his Press Secretary?

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   November 6th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

I don’t like Rush, but he is right about Emanuel, he is a thug!

Ingrid from Northern Virginia   November 6th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

I have complete confidence that Obama will make cabinet choices with much thought and deliberation of who is most qualified….It’s not just about ‘I owe you’…
Hopefully people look at the qualifications and not just democrat, republican, minority, female, etc….

Jolene, St. Joseph, MI   November 6th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

I’m not sure I’d want Kerry for Sec. of State either.

marcela   November 6th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

As president of the u.s. why would you not want knowledgeable individuals that you trust in your inner circle, that would have served candidate McCain well. I think that Lieberman was McCain’s pick and a loyal confidant instead he chose Palin where he had no history.

Kirk in Dallas   November 6th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

It’s funnt to watch pundis who guess what President Obama (I like saying that)will do, and then criticize those appointments as if they are fact. I’d like to see Governor Richardson as Sec. of State.

Emdy   November 6th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Good evening, Anderson and bloggers, seems like we’ll have have lots of new faces to get familiar with for the next four years

Mark Blanco   November 6th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

President-Elect Obama has some competent officials awaiting as cabinet officials. Those closely tied with Obama is helpful to him, because they bring ideologies and close shared values to that of Obama. Other people, like Robert Gates and Colin Powell are choices that need to be left alone due to the fact that the War in Iraq is complex and difficult to syphon through a period of exchange.

Detra   November 6th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Obama is heading the right way, his decision making can be pretty much on target. He will make the cabinet with flavor

Hubert Allen   November 6th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

I played high school soccer with Rahm Emanual my varsity year. He was a tough, wily, physical player. I’m proud he has stepped up to this huge task and know he will serve President Obama and our country is the highest manner.

Matt, Osan, Korea   November 6th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Good evening, people.
I’m so awed at how America can get past the racial barriers and elect a black American to the White House. It’s awesome.
I’ve always been curious on how Obama will manage to bring back the economy. He will make mistakes, but hopefully, he’ll be a great president for the United States of America.

Cynthia   November 6th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

As long as there are people out there like Rush Limbaugh it will be harder to pull the country together. I’m sure President Elect Obama will be willing to work across party lines.

David Martinez, Indianapolis   November 6th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

In the interest of a bipartisan cabinet, how about the “maverick” for sec. of defense………….

Daneen B.   November 6th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

I am excited to hear who may be headed to the White House. It’s like picking your fantasy football team – just with political power players.

Ray   November 6th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Keeping Robert Gates as Secretary of Defense — even briefly — sends the wrong message: change vs. more of the same.

Minou, New York City   November 6th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Has Hillary Clinton been approached yet? Has she released any kind of statement? Where is she??

Travis   November 6th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Obama who promised to be bi-partisan has chosen the most partisan congressman as his first choice. Oh well it was nice for a day to hope he was telling truth about reaching across and being different. Same old politics, say one thing and do another.

Keith Parker   November 6th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

I think Emanuel will really help Our new President Barack Obama

Susan, Mi   November 6th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

I would really like to see our new president-elect find a spot for
John McCain

Paula, Colorado   November 6th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Anderson,
Hi!
Bill Richardson would be an excellent choice for Sec. of State.

Martha   November 6th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Do you really believe that Obama will bring on Republicans to his staff?

Rent   November 6th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

I think the choices he’s made are good one’s because of times like these, you need heavy hitters since they act swift. Obama has character and common sense which this country has been missing from a leader.

john w   November 6th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

i sure hope they dont put john kerry in the administration office.

EJ (USA)   November 6th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Is Obama going to let a lot of us young folk who elected him compete for some of the lower-level staff positions in his administration?

Ismael Tohari   November 6th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Will the four coming years be enough for Obama to make the change he has been promising or he needs to serve for another term?

Maureen T   November 6th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

How about giving Barack Obama an opportunity, Rush?

Cydney in NC   November 6th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

I agree with Paul Begala’s earlier comment that McCain may not be the best choice of Secretary of Defense, but what about the head of Veteran Affairs? I do hope that Obama will look at both the private and public sectors for Cabinet positions and also consider REpublicans for a truly balanced and diverse cabinet. Speaking of fun choices, what about Sanjay Gupta as Surgeon General and Anderson Cooper as Press Secretary???

Brandi-bottom of the boot   November 6th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

thank you for fixing the webcam! ;)

Cesar Rodriguez   November 6th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

I am very happy with President Elect – Barack Obamas choices so far, I think he has to get the ball rolling as soon as possible, and believe me I am sure that tomorrow he will probably give us some names of who will be in charge of treasury and many other aspects of his staff and cabinet that will reflect his dedication towards this country and the financial mess were in!

Thanks

Cesar

Kirk in Dallas   November 6th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

I agree with Lou Dobbs for once. I’d rather he make thoughtful choices, which is why I voted for him in the first place.

Michael (jamaica)   November 6th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

I think that picking Emanuel was the right thing to do, it shows that he means busniess. But what will become of liberman Anderson? After that speach he made at the republican convetion he must be havin kittens now. Wat goes around comes around……….peace.

Ingrid from Northern Virginia   November 6th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

The dow is reacting to the Oct. job loss numers, consumer spending, etc….people who think it has to do with Obama don’t understand that we are in a recession and it will be lasting for awhile…It took a long time to get here and we need patience coming out…

Tony   November 6th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Why are you showing ANY clip from Limbaugh? He is a gasbag entertainer dependent on hatred. We will Not watch your show if these clips continue.

Junior McHaffey   November 6th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

I think Joe Biden should make Will.I.Am his legislative assistant

Michael - Springfield, PA   November 6th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Poor President Elect Obama. It starts already. Damned if you do and Damned if you don’t. Let him set up his Administration and then we will see how things even out.

missy   November 6th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Regarding the gay marriage in California, whether you agree with it or not, the people have spoken. They voted, just like they did for President.

HENRY   November 6th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Dear Anderson: There are a few names I think would be good for the cabinet.
1) Ex- senator Mirchell- He was a judge and also wrote the Steroids paper for Baseball (Attorney General?)
2) Sam Nunn another ex-senator with a wealth of knowledge
3) Colin Powell (Secretary of State)
4) Richard Lugar another former senator with a wealth of experience and knowledge
These are just a few that stick out in my mind as being emminently qualified.
Thanks

Jolene, St. Joseph, MI   November 6th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

I don’t expect Obama to pick a woman for a cabinet position. Heck, he didn’t pick one for VP (and he had a well qualified one to pick).

MaryBeth   November 6th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

I know some women have been mentioned…the gov. of Arizona, Napolitano, and Kathleen Sebelius…but I don’t know for what positions.

Jeff   November 6th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

I think it would be great to have McCain in Barack’s cabinet

Bruce Cowe   November 6th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

Will there be any consideration given to Condoleeza Rice to either stay on in her present role or perhaps in another role…we need to tap our best talents like Rice and Colin Powell

Janet   November 6th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

Good evening Anderson….

The Obama girls will be fine making the transition to the White House. Being a fifth grade teacher, the past two days I’ve asked my students (same age as the oldest Obama daughter) how they would handle the move to the White House. Several of them had no answer, but those that did said it would be hard to leave behind their friends. No matter how the girls transistion is handled, I’m sure Barack and Michelle, the parents, will make sure their daughters have whatever they need to make things work. As parents, the Obama’s have kept their daughter’s lives normal and grounded – something I’m sure will be carried forward into this new adventure for the entire family.

Best wishes to all of them – especially the girls!

Lori   November 6th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

To the point of the Obama family choosing a puppy, I hope he leads by example and adopts from the Humane Society. It would certainly back his claims to support the poor to adopt an animal in need, rather than choose a pedigree.

Naissa, Texas, USA   November 6th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

I want to hear if Hillary will have anything to do pertaining to Obama’s staff. I am hoping he will include her in something.

As for Barack’s daughters, I wish them all the best and hope their lives don’t change too much. Especially considering how young they are!

Hi Anderson and Erica! =)

Brent   November 6th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

Quoting Rush Limbaugh, are you serious Anderson? What good is served by giving that racist jerk anymore airtime than he already has. That was disgraceful. If there is going to be change it will be from Obama, he will be president and he will set the tone.

ann-upstate new york   November 6th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

I hear that there is speculation that if Alaskian Senator Ted Stevens resigns that there will be an open seat available to Sarah Palin to be possibly elected to…..setting it up for the 2012 Presidential nomination… So whats next a crash course in becoming Senator?

Mark Blanco   November 6th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

Obama should have Gov. Bill Richardson in mind, because he is content and adamant with energy and foreign relations serving as secretary and ambassador, respectively.

Nancy Branch   November 6th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Who are the women being considered for cabinet posts by Pres. Elect Obama , and what is the likelihood that they will be chosen?

Sylvia, Chicago   November 6th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

To Jo Ann from Ohio, you are right, Emmanuel is a well know figure in Chicago politics; to be more specific – he is known for getting things done

Bob   November 6th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

rule? RULE?
Gee, can’t imagine what conservatives are worried about.

Brandi-bottom of the boot   November 6th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

EJ,

I would love to see either Colin Powell or Caroline Kennedy in any capacity of this administration. Both of them would be even better!

Ray   November 6th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

The CA gay marriage battle is exactly why some issues should not be left to the electorate *or* Congress to decide. Can anyone envision the integration of schools — now viewed as morally reprehensible — being decided by the citizens of Topeka voting on the issue?? Change things through the court system or state legislature.

Keith Parker   November 6th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

I am so glad about this election the USA needed a face lift

Mike, Syracuse NY   November 6th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Jeanne, the DOW is driven as much by perception as reality. If it is perceived that Obama can’t fix the problem, true or not, it will react negatively. It’s a barometer of confidence, or lack thereof. It’s a mob mentality, not a reasoned decision.

Naissa, Texas, USA   November 6th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Who the heck is that radio man talking so vulgarly about Obama and his choices? Geez, get some class!

Tracey - Boston   November 6th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Ellen,

Caroline Kennedy has done more in her life than Sarah Palin: she is a lawyer, written books…maybe you should google her….

Jolene, St. Joseph, MI   November 6th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

I heard today on local news that it was not the youth vote that gave Obama the presidency. It was no one group at all. It was a combination of youth, blacks, latinos, and yes, older white people!

Selam Alem   November 6th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

I hope and pray that President Elect Obama doesn’t make a mistake by appointing Senator Tom Daschle as Secretary of Health.
Anybody who is serving as board member of any Health care provider will be a serious mistake that will have a serious impact on health care reform.

If he is going to bring change Like he said, he seriously need to look harder on the people that he is appointing and what kind of board they are serving in.

Selam

Jeremy washington st   November 6th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Hey Anderson how’s it going ?

I am happy Obama won but I wish you guys would start covering other stories beside the election. I mean it’s really cool but Celebrities , Sarah Palin, and how badly the republicans lost is not in my interest.

Clare   November 6th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

The Obamo Kids will just be fine, and should continued their ordinary lives as before because they have two down-to-earth parents thats has the grass-roots visiob as most of us. Senator Barry will be an Important and avid role model to Most Black fathers across the world, and this will change history to oue children as well. Bravo to the Obamas and a long journey of twist and turn but keep the hope and peace alive .

Ingrid from Northern Virginia   November 6th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Kirk, I agree that Richardson would be great as Second. of state…and Colin Powell as defense…Hillary I think is wanting to stay in the senate and jocky for Pelosi’s position!

Kayla Kuni   November 6th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

As I recall Hillary said she wanted to remain a senator for NY because she wanted Dems to keep the majority. This was after one of the debates, perhaps after the VP debate.

Evelyn Ansa, M.D.   November 6th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Anderson. this is the FIRST time I have ever blogged but I could not help joining in after your last comment

What do you mean “what do you think about Obama’s choices (i.e.) staff.

The guy has named only one person so far every oyher person named has been speculation from you reporters

I am still watching your program and hope you comment on my message hoever unlikely that chance may be

By the way, I know why CNN was widely watched on Nov 4th

Martie   November 6th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Margaret – why would we lose credibility in Mideast peace talks – just because Rahm Emanuel is Jewish? That’s a bit simplistic. Don’t you think you’re making sweeping assumptions on that front?

Junior McHaffey   November 6th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

Or maybe D.L. Hughley should be Obama’s Sec. of Treasury

Lauri   November 6th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

I think Obama should keep Gates. By all accounts he is doing a very good job. Plus it helps fulfill his reaching across the isle. I think Emanual was a good choice. You need someone able to be tough when necessary. Limbaugh just tries to keep Americans from compromising and making real progress.

Betty-IN.   November 6th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

I for one am sick if all the Sarah Palin bashing. The election is over isn’t it?? I was hoping CNN would just contiune their Love Affair with Obama & perhaps report some Real News for a change.

Angel from Cali   November 6th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

Pres. Obama made a great choice with Emmanuel. He needs someone who will have his back at all times through the good and bad. I just hope he does not choose someone like George Stephanopolis!

Brandi-bottom of the boot   November 6th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

Minou,

I remember HRC saying something about remaining in New York in her current positon. That while she would be honored, she loves the job she is doing there. Definitely not a quote, not even sure how accurate it is. :)

Maureen T   November 6th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

Ah, there he is again, David Gergen, the voice of reason! Love that guy!

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   November 6th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

If the world is so enthralled with Obama why are the markets dropping? Where is all that confidence in this new president?

Joe   November 6th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

I used to listen to Rush Limbaugh, who could be fun to listen to at times, but I got tire from his bigotry. People like him feed on fear and hatred. He and his listeners are most arrogant, bias, and uninformed. Rahm Emanuel is a fine Chief of Staff. Republican should listen to David Gergen.

Stuart Miller   November 6th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

Why haven’t we heard about the possibility of Al Gore joining the team as Secretary of the Environment (or of DOE) and elevating it to a cabinet position?

dorothy   November 6th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

From what I’ve been watching Obama do, I have complete confidence that he will do exactly what needs to be done and appoint the right people. We just need to give him more than a day or two to do it before everyone starts questioning him.

Jean - Dallas   November 6th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

Who are the potential ladies are for an Obama’s cabinet?.

Minou, New York City   November 6th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

Paul Begala rocks!!!

Joan Pa   November 6th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

I reallly hope Colin Powell is in this mix!

MaryBeth   November 6th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

I don’t think Hillary wants to leave NY….I think she wants to stay a senator. I’ve heard her say that in interviews.

Mike, Syracuse NY   November 6th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

On a ship it’s the role of the executive officer (XO) to be an SOB. The chief of staff serves the same function. Obama gets to be the captain liked by the crew, while his XO keeps everyone in line. The COS can’t be a wimp.

Mike Davies Hillsboro OR   November 6th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Hi Anderson,
I see Rush is wasting no time getting in his 2 cents worth. Will CNN consider giving progressive radio hosts some coverage?

John in Arizona   November 6th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Can we please, please get David Gergen into the inner circle of this administration?

Maureen, Georgia   November 6th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

President Elect Obama is not going to please everyone especially the republicans, they’re looking @ everything he does to critiscize him.
The chief of staff I think is a good choice. Please everyone give Obama a chance, let’s give him time, he just started.

Barbara, Gaffney, SC   November 6th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

What we also need to remember is some of these positions may be appointed without approval and some require approval. Would you really want someone in a cabinet position that did not know what that position entailed?

Alan   November 6th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

The Obama family seems to be quite strong. I think life in the White House will be a welcome change to the frantic life they have had on the campaign trail. Plus they are getting a new puppy!

Kim From PA   November 6th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Emanuel is someone Obama can trust that will fight for and with the President elect. But what is impotent is that Emanuel knows his place which he showed by NOT stepping in during the Clinton / Obama primaries. Obama will make mistakes… this is not one, wait they will come, for every president they do.

Curtis, Canada   November 6th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Congratulations on the election of Barack Obama! Hopefully he will bring about a greater unity with our two countries and inspire the next generation towards a better tommorrow.

Eric Walker   November 6th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Anderson, Emmanual is a great pick. He won’t need him for the Republicians. He will need him for those two sour pusses Polosi who wimpers to drill baby drill and Reid who is to scared to oust Joe Lieberman. They certainly wil use there leverage with Obama. Just like they did with Clinton in the 90’s with Health Care. Complete the change and get rid of these two old schoolers.

Naissa, Texas, USA   November 6th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

I am so disappointed in the state of California pertaining to Prop 8. I can only imagine what the couple who actually got married must be feeling right now. It’s not fair.

Poor Ellen. :(

charles hardenbergh   November 6th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

Hi Anderson, On Obama’s cabinet, I do hope he put in some real qualified people from the other party as well as his own. That would show he is serious about bringing the two side’s together,to help all the people.

Michael, Canada   November 6th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

Maybe AC should be Press Secretary?

Kevin   November 6th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

While Emanuel is tough, he has a lot of experience and is known for getting things done, so this is generally a good choice. I think people aren’t being patient and need to give Obama a chance.

I think Al Gore would be an excellent choice for the environment position, and I’d like to see Chuck Hagel in his cabinet as well.

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   November 6th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

They already know about Emanuel from his time in the Clinton administration.

Nurissa   November 6th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

Good evening Anderson first time blogger and I must say I love ur show !

Brandi-bottom of the boot   November 6th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

Rush just needs to HUSH. lol

Henry   November 6th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

Dear Anderson: Here are a few suggestions for Obama’s cabinet;
They are all incredibly qualified and would make excellent appointments/
1) Ex senator Mitchell from Maine (previously a Judge) Attorney General
2) Colin Powell- Secretary of State
3) Sam Nunn – Ex Senator would make a good secretary of Defense
4) Ex Senator Lugar another Highly qualified individual
These individuals come from a diverse background and are sure to be incredible additions.
Thanks
Henry

Cynthia   November 6th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy has already been far more visible than she likes to be. I don’t see a cabinet post tempting her away from the private life she prefers.

I’d rather see Hillary Clinton in the Senate or on the Supreme Court.

Rice…uh, no.

I’d like him to consider Fran Townsend staying on.

Napolitano is wonderful, but is it worth losing a Democratic governer?

Bob   November 6th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

I’ve heard Robert Rubin’s name knocked around for Treasury. I seriously hope not. His consultation sure didn’t keep Citigroup out of trouble.

A couple of interesting choices:

Don Luskin, who has argued Obama’s case for several months.

Neel Kashkari who is Asst Sec Treasury heading up the bailout. The guy is scary brilliant, which might appeal to Obama. Plus, it would allow continuity while “reaching across the isle”.

Also…will we see another Rice as NSA? Susan Rice, perhaps?

Martie   November 6th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

I’m also a bit concerned over Kerry’s canvassing for the Sect. of State position. I don’t know his record well, but I’m always a little wary of any person who is so anxious to have a position of such power and visibility.

MaryBeth   November 6th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

Mike: It’s like a good cop/bad cop routine. Obama is the good cop and Emanuel is the bad cop. The police use it for a reason: it works!

Ava, Buffalo, NY   November 6th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

Nancy, I too was wondering about WOMEN!

EJ (USA)   November 6th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

I for one am sick if all the Sarah Palin bashing. The election is over isn’t it?? I was hoping CNN would just contiune their Love Affair with Obama & perhaps report some Real News for a change.

I understood that it was the McCain campaign aides that were doing the “Palin bashing.”

Cary Carpenter-Rome,N.Y.   November 6th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

Isn’t it funny that after the election, the finger pointing and blame game has begun in the John McCain camp? Why can’t they accept the fact that Barack Obama won and will be the 44th president on Jan.20th? John McCain has(and most graciously I might add).

kalayna   November 6th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

Al Gore, are you kidding?

Ingrid from Northern Virginia   November 6th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

Please keep in mind people, as Obama himself said, there is only ONE president at a time…Obama does not have one bit of authority to effect policy right now!

Michael in NJ   November 6th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

Anderson,
The Conservative Talk show hosts and and the RNC are on a path of self-destruction. Attacking Obama for his first pick, while it may play to the base of angry white old people, they will continue to alienate the rest of Americans. Did Rush really expect Obama to appoint a conservative as the Chief of Staff?

Integrity   November 6th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

“Liars figure and figures lie”….This fits Rush Limbaugh like a glove. Please don’t discredit CNN by having Rush Limbaugh comment. Thanks

Jolene, St. Joseph, MI   November 6th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

Well, if Obama were to consider David Gergen as an advisor, then we would never hear from him again on AC360. Not sure I’d like that! :(

Naissa, Texas, USA   November 6th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

Hey Anderson, are you going to be in DC for the inauguration, or are you going to cover it from New York?

Devin, Chicago   November 6th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

Missy, I agree that the people have voted but I really question how they voted. I don’t if you have seen any of the Yes on Prop 8 commercials, but they won based on putting fear into people and some of those videos were so false it wasnt even funny. McCain tried and lost but some it worked for the Yes people. Its sad that in order to get there point across they had to get so low.

Majid Sheikh in Lahore   November 6th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

The secret to understanding Barack Obama is in the fact that he will be the best listener the White House ever had. This is the lynchpin attribute of the man. Just for the record, the word Barack means the lightning white horse that takes prophets to heaven.
Majid Sheikh

EJ (USA)   November 6th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

Maybe AC should be Press Secretary?

He would have to take a massive paycut.

Tracey - Boston   November 6th, 2008 10:24 pm ET

Mike Syracuse….

I totally agree.. any good leader needs a pitbull in that position ..no lipstick please

Lily   November 6th, 2008 10:24 pm ET

Hey Anderson,

David Gergen is a good choice (:

Susan, Mi   November 6th, 2008 10:24 pm ET

Can we please please stop hearing about Sarah Palin.

Minou, New York City   November 6th, 2008 10:24 pm ET

Maybe president Obama should hire d.Gergen and P. Begala! Or hopefully he’s watching AC 360 at least…

Barbara, Gaffney, SC   November 6th, 2008 10:24 pm ET

Anderson, have any of the commentators read Obama’s plans published on his new transitional website? I would like them to and then comment on them. I found them to be very interesting myself.

Richard   November 6th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

conservatives !!!!! What’s your problem? His not even in office yet! come on already. Rash Lumble better shut up, master no it all..should have run for president see what choices you would make..this country is already enroute to Unity. Deal with it.

Alan   November 6th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

I am fairly certain we will see Lugar in Obama’s cabinet. He mentioned Lugar frequently during the campaign as evidence of his reaching across the aisle.

kalayna   November 6th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

why do they think that Obama needs some rest? he wanted this job and get to it, you have a lot of promises to keep superman

Chris from STL   November 6th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

David …. No … No … NO….. No time for rest until the economy is stabilized. Obama can take rest for however long he wants after this.

Ron R   November 6th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

Good evening, Do you think Ms. Rice will consider or even be asked to be apart of Obama’s staff or cabinet,

Sandra Robertson   November 6th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

We Americans need to show faith and support for our President elect. Don’t let the Rush Limbaughs’ of this world get us down with their pessimistic words/attitudes. It is now time to build up, not break down any further.

Dan, Denver, CO   November 6th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

I am curious to know if the executive branch (President, their staff) is required to operate on a fixed annual budget? So, for example, President Obama may decide that he needs multiple financial and security advisors. Where do you draw the line, can he hire like a football field full of advisors for his cabinet? Thanks!

Maureen T   November 6th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

Barack Obama should definitely get some rest! And so should Anderson! When will you get some much needed rest Anderson or are you well rested?

cassandra   November 6th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

I hope obam keep choosing people like emmanuel..people that a decisive and full throttle no matter what anybody thinks….and for all of you that are intentionally trying to let wallstreet drop bcuz obama won its not gonna work..there is a master palnner in charge

MaryBeth   November 6th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

Hmmm…Colin Powell for Sec. of Education? Interesting.

Rory - New York City   November 6th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

I would be interested to see Caroline Kennedy as Ed sec’y. She’s done wonderful work here in NYC with the public schools

Richard   November 6th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

Anderson, please stay above the fray and not talk about Rush Limbaugh. There’s enough to talk about out there in the news and politics without him and only brings negativity. It also gives credibility to his comments when your show spends time discussing his views.

Maureen, Georgia   November 6th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

The girls will be fine, The Obama’s have raised their daughters well , I’m sure they will keep them grounded, and keep the media away from them.

Mike, Syracuse NY   November 6th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

It’s not reasonable to expect Obama to pick a Rep. or someone he doesn’t trust as COS. He needs someone he can count on to have his back. He does however need to appoint a Rep (and Hagel doesn’t count) as either Defense or State if he wants his vow of bipartisanship to be taken seriously.

ellen   November 6th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

Yes, Caroline K. has an impressive resume, and I have enormous respect & admiration for her, but what experience/credentials in world affairs & international politics does she have that would qualify her for UN Amb? (for that matter, I had also wondered what landed her on the VP selection committee other than her endorsement of & support for Obama)

Ingrid from Northern Virginia   November 6th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

The dow is reacting to the Oct. job loss numers, consumer spending, etc….people who think it has to do with Obama don’t understand that we are in a deeprecession and it will be lasting for awhile…It took a long time to get here and we need patience coming out…

almar   November 6th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

I find all this criticism of a single appointment to be ridiculous. They want him to be ‘in the middle’ and that somehow to mean that he hires no liberals or known faces. Really? Of course there will be liberals, and there will be known faces, just like I hope there will be some conservatives and ‘new’ faces. If by the end of it there’s no balance, then I could understand, but the guy has not even taken office yet and the usual suspects are already going at it.

Richard   November 6th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

Of course not everyone’s on board, so please don’t stand in our way as we move on in unity . I am my brothers keeper!

Martie   November 6th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

If Barack enlists David, I’ll happily wait years for his TV commentary knowing that his sage advice will be among the best President Obama is likely to receive.

lynn   November 6th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

Mike in NY: The downturn in the economy was due to the drastic reduction in sales in every sector and economic status in the economy and in the increased jobless rate. Even Lou Dobbs, hardly an Obama supprter nixed the idea of this being a reflrction of Obama was idiocy!

Al   November 6th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

prop 8 lost because of the bible thumpers and hipocrites in Washington.

Cortez   November 6th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

Stop bringing up Hillary she has stated many of times that she wishes to stay in the senate because that is where he needs the support the most.

As for John Kerry I wish he would stay in the senate as well and not secretary of state.

People give him time there are many positions still left in the cabinet. He only named two people thus far and you all want to give him hell already. My God can a man make thoughtful decisions and considerations before he picks people.

Angel from Cali   November 6th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

Has anyone mentioned Madilyn Albrite?

Eric Walker   November 6th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

Did I read someone say Condoleeza Rice(Russian and foriegn affairs expert) for a position in obama’s admin. Have you seen the foriegn affair problems we have had over the last 8 yrs. The West bank,Iran, N. Korea, Russia, just to name a few.

Sylvia, Chicago   November 6th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

I wonder if there really poeople other who takesRush seriously; he sounds a lot more like a winded Chicago politician then Obama & Emanuel ever did

Lori from IL   November 6th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

I appreciate the wisdom of Paul and David.

I think we need to give President-Elect Obama a break on all the guessing of his cabinet positions. This was a long election and he has only been Pres-Elect about 48hours. Everyone has commented on his calm, contemplative demeanor during the election campaign, why would we want him to make rash decisions now?

Eli, North Carolina   November 6th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

I so agree with David Gergen – Obama must be bone tired. We should allow him just a little time off and to himself. He so deserves it. Could any of us survive 21 months of what he just went through? I thought he looked like he was running on pure adrenalin during his acceptance speech on Tuesday.

Also, as far as his cabinet appointments go – it’s only been two days since the election (although it seems longer) give him a chance. With his choice of Rahm Emanuel he’s already showed what kind of people he’s looking for.

And please – NO MORE RUSH LIMBAUGH! We shouldn’t give him another moment of tv time. It just feeds the hatred and fear even more.

Lydia   November 6th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

I really don’t think that anyone should have to say anything about who our new president elect picks for his administration.Just sit back and watch what he is capable of and let our new President run this country as best as he can. He has been a real wise man and has made wise choices and the theory of him picking the people who endorsed him is a very stupid thing to say yet if that is the only reason they endorsed him to get a job I highly doubt that he will build his administration on gratitude only.

Sean Weller   November 6th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

Hello Anderson! I think your show is great! I hope you respond, please: What ever happened to the third party candidates in the election? Could you atleast make a note about them or something? Thanks so much!

Cynthia   November 6th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

I sorta feel sorry for Sarah Palin now because now that it is all said and done it all comes back to Senator McCain and the fact that he chose her as his VP in the first place.

Jaelle   November 6th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

Hi Anderson,

Thanks for continuing the excellent election coverage. I, for one, am not quite ready to let go!

kate   November 6th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

Regarding the disappointment about Emmanuel as a partisan player can we not consider that a team requires different skills and the way Obama harnesses them to get his agenda achieved is the question

Don, WA   November 6th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

Who better to inform us about the market that “floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee” – than Ali.

James   November 6th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

When talking politics as has been the case of late why is Rush Limbaugh quoted as source..isn’t that a bit like quoting Howard Stern..only with a different ideololgy..lets face it Rush is little more than a shock jock.

Jean - Dallas   November 6th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

Hello Ingrid——-Hillary cannot jocky for Pelosi’s position. These two ladies are in different houses of Congress.

Eric Walker   November 6th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

I would like to see Sen Webb Secretary of State

Barbara, Gaffney, SC   November 6th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

Erica, will you ask Ali if maybe these corporations are just tightening their belts and readjusting their earnings to be more likely rather than on what may be? I believe Obama is going to clamp down on these corporations and that is why the market is dropping.

brian funk   November 6th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

being a obama voter, it would be interesting to see his cabinet as it forms in the 70 some odd days. i do feel that president elect obama knows something of what he’s doing. i just hope he has a chair for hillary clinton in his cabinet.

Christine   November 6th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

So much for a change in Washington. All these names are not going to change anything. We don’t need another Kennedy in DC.

Sorry, but I still see the DOW not so much liking the new Pres elect.

Minou, New York City   November 6th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

“Whenever I see him (Ali) here, I know I lost money.” hahaha, Jeffrey Toobin is quite right about that.

Cortez   November 6th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

@Mike, Syracuse NY
Its up to Rob Gates if he wants to stay Obama stated that he would not mind keeping him on.

Judy Holcomb   November 6th, 2008 10:32 pm ET

I’m watching the flurry of speculation about who Obama will pick for his staff positions. So far I haven’t heard mention of any women being considered. I hope his staff and cabinet will be inclusive in all ways. However, I’m still doing the Obama dance…the dance of hope!

Desirae, Mount vernon, N.Y   November 6th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

i don’t care who he pick for his team as long they start working on getting thing back to good

Alan   November 6th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

I think as he makes more and more selections more people will coin the phrase “Team of Rivals” to describe it. It is still way to early for criticism from the Republicans directly however Rush Limbaugh and his ilk won’t take a breath for the next four years.

Melinda   November 6th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

Chief of staff should be democrat with impeccable common sense. Has Cheif of staff ever been partisan? Why are we talking about this?

judy   November 6th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

I agree with David Gergen when he said Obama should take a vacation and rest. He’s been at it for an extraordinarily long time…he needs a rest before he takes over in January.

I will miss John King’s magic map…that was really cool.

Lauri   November 6th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

The Dow doesn’t like anyone right now. It has been doing this for weeks. It’s to early to say that it’s because of the Pres. elect

john w   November 6th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

we hear all this stuff about prop 8 what about amendment 2 here in florida. it was a very misleading amendment in the first place. we had a passing of gay marriage ban back in 1997 this new amendment is a target at our domestic partner benefits.

Don, WA   November 6th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

I like the idea of Colin Powell for Secretary of Education…it would mesh with Obama’s message of hope and future in our children….polish up your rulers teachers!

Tracey - Boston   November 6th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

California should have waited a year for the proposition 8. Let the court ruling settle in and take root.

Angel from Cali   November 6th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

Colin Powell for Sec. of Education is very interesting!

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   November 6th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

They should not be able to undo the marriages that have already taken place. That is just wrong!!

lynn   November 6th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

John McCain will NOT be in an Obama cabinet. Their policies, especially on foreign policy, are too different and the things he and his campaign were too outlandish.

People are reacting in such a bizarre way. Obama’s decisions will be thoughtful, deliberate and intelligent. To staff the future policy of the US especially in this mess can’t be done in two days.

The Clintons have said consistently that they do not want positions in the Cabinet!

Renee   November 6th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

Very sad for our gay Americans.

Cynthia   November 6th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

Government and the people need to stay out of another persons bedroom or household. If that is what they want to do – I say more power to them. As I see it that is something between the two people involved and the higher power that they serve.

Joe Martinez ,Hollister, CA   November 6th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

It is amazing to me. We overcome racism and elect a black man as president, but we can’t except gay marriage. I enjoy your show very much Anderson!

Sarah   November 6th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

I agree with the couple featured on the show–government should not only represent the views of the majority, but also that of the minority. If only the views of the majority were represented in governent, we’d still be living in a segregated patriarchy. Although my religious views tell me otherwise, I believe everyone is entitled to equal rights

Ingrid from Northern Virginia   November 6th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

Can someone explain how a law can be passed in May but then be back on the ballot in Nov.? What was the point of the law being passed!!! What a terrible shame and step backwards…

Integrity   November 6th, 2008 10:36 pm ET

The DOW dropped because unemployment was up 33% more than expected. NOT because of Senator Obama.

Mike, Syracuse NY   November 6th, 2008 10:36 pm ET

I’m wondering why it’s wonderful for democracy to have the public vote for Obama, and yet when the public passes Prop 8 by the same democratic process it’s taken to court. Do we have a democracy or not?

I am so happy , but still emotionally drained for some reason. This election has been so important to so many, and I just love the history we are making!

David Gergen   November 6th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Hello everyone — so pleased to see so many of you continuing to join up here for conversation. And very appropriate: one drama has now ended but another begins as Barack Obama gathers the reins of the highest office in the land.

As to his appointees:
– Rahm E. is indeed a rough-and-tumble player but a President needs someone like that in his inner circle. Republicans who are complaining ought to remember what Richard Nixon used to say: “Every President needs an SOB.” He is a strong partisan, but he is also someone who has a track record of working well across the aisle.

– I do think there is a legitimate question about whether the full team that emerges will represent the “new politics” that Obama has promised. But for goodness sake, he has only appointed one person so far. Let’s give him time to get his full team in place, and then we can take another look at just how new his politics will be.

– Colin Powell: in my judgment, he would be an excellent Secretary of Education. Not sure if he would take it — he is enjoying his well-deserved “retirement” — but he could really help to reshape K-12.

– I continue to be very hopeful that Obama will have a bipartisan team, bringing in more than a token Republican. Was encouraged today by a story on the front of the Financial Times reporting senior Obama aides as saying that at least two major positions would go to Republicans.

Again, let’s wait and see. The new drama is underway!

Jeremy washington st   November 6th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

I think Obama should have a place for Ron Pual in his cabinet

An odd idea

Brandi-bottom of the boot   November 6th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

@ Al regarding Prop 8,

Very good argument. I agree with you. While ‘marriage’ was a religious union, our government has already turned it into a ‘legal’ union and destroyed the original bible thumping version.

There were no legal documents in the Bible, hence, the ‘marriage’ they are trying to protect and destroy when it suits them to get divorced, is not the same ‘marriage’ of religion. The marriage that exists now is a legal union and should not be limited to only heterosexual couples according to our Bill of Rights.

Jay, SC   November 6th, 2008 10:38 pm ET

Has anyone considered the top secret information Obama was given and will continue to recieve might influence who he appoints to certain position. He might just be putting the right people in the right place to get the job done and proceed with his policies. Not to mention how long it has been since we had a Democratic president besides Clinton. Therefore how many Democrats have presidental experience that were not connected to Clinton so yes he will be appointing Democrats that worked with Clinton .

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   November 6th, 2008 10:38 pm ET

It is unbelievable that the same people who were so excited about voting for a black man to be president would deny others the right to be married. They were selfish and could not see beyond their own desires.

Maureen T   November 6th, 2008 10:39 pm ET

As a black woman I would not support Prop 8!!! I’m sad that the percentage of African Americans who voted against it was so large!!

james caldwell   November 6th, 2008 10:39 pm ET

Who will be u s atty general

Susan, Mi   November 6th, 2008 10:39 pm ET

I am very sad about proposition 8. A marriage is a contract between two people. And until the churches step and pay taxes they have no right whatsoever to be involved in the process.

john w   November 6th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

all men are NOT created equal if as a taxpayer i cant get married because im gay

Diane Wallace   November 6th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

You are currently discussing Prop 8 in CA. Isn’t the question about this proposition about the state constitution? How is it legal to add something to the constitution that basically argues with the equality that is already in the constitution?

Belinda   November 6th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

I agree about the women, besides Hillary and Caroline any suggestions? I think Emanuel was a great choice because he stood up for dirty politics. As far as MCcain being in his cabinet, not a wise choice.

suzi badrena   November 6th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

It would be great to see Bill Richardson as Secretary of State. He has the credentials, the insight, the patience, the vision and the loyalty to be invaluable to President Obama.

We all have to be behind Obama’s appointments and realize he is who we trusted and supported all this time, and his choices will be outstanding.

Minou, New York City   November 6th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

Thank you, David Gergen. You’re blog posts are always appreciated!

Melinda   November 6th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

I really don’t understand the California vote. It makes no sense. Something is not right. And.. if you were married, then you were married. No take backs!!!

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   November 6th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

Someone else’s gay marriage does not effect the lives of others; I don’t understand the problem! Get out of people’s bedrooms!!

raj   November 6th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

I am an Obama supporter and voted for him. I think he is a strong family oriented man. Few things are interesting to me:
1. His maternal grand mother just died. She dedicated her life to raise and support her grand children. I am wondering when her funeral is? I hope Obama will spare some time to attend it.
2. Obama’s paternal grand mother still alive and celebrating her grand son’s victory in Kenya. I hope Obama will invite her for presidential oath ceremony

Renee   November 6th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

Let’s be real. Obama turned his back on the gay and lesbian community. He used them to seek the WH and did not stand with them.

Petra (the Czech chick)   November 6th, 2008 10:41 pm ET

YES on prop 8 very very very SAAAAAAAAAD Why don’t we just let gay people BE and have the same rights as straight people…??!! Don’t understand at all…

Milo   November 6th, 2008 10:41 pm ET

Anderson, when you are talking about California and Gay Marriage, the commercials target Latino voters. The girl and her mother in the ad were Latina. Also, there was a latino gentleman in the ad. Catholicism also paid a role. If the ad campaign from the no on 8 side was more effective it would have helped, but it was inept. There is no conversation between the Gay/Lesbian and black/latino civil rights communities and that conversation needs to take place. There needs to be more Black and Latino representation in the Gay Civil Rights struggles. That has long been a critique in California.

Cynthia   November 6th, 2008 10:41 pm ET

I feel as if it is none of my business how others choose to live and no one elses for that matter.

Michael N.   November 6th, 2008 10:41 pm ET

I have not heard any names mentioned for a new Attorney general. I would like to suggest Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to follow in his late father’s footsteps.

ellie   November 6th, 2008 10:41 pm ET

On this issue being talked about right now regarding the gay marriage bans. I have to say that in Florida the wording of this amendment was done in a way that was confusing for a lot of people.

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   November 6th, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Anderson, Barney’s under a lot of stress lately; let’s cut him a break!

judy   November 6th, 2008 10:42 pm ET

I voted against Prop. 8, especially since the Supreme Court gave gays the right to marry. It was upsetting to see the TV ads for the Proposition…they resorted to scare tactics, saying the schools would be REQUIRED to teach about gay marriage…

Lucy-interested in education   November 6th, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Obama always stressed the importance of early childhood education in his campaign. Why not have a teacher for Secretary of Education? I hope Obama at least surveys teachers before filling this position. More bureaucracy is not the answer.

Gregg   November 6th, 2008 10:42 pm ET

I agree with Ingrid from Virginia, Hillary has her sights on the speakers chair, and also Anderson, i agree with 90% of the bloggers, why do you even bring up Limbaugh? why waste any air time on that far right, poor sport, bad loser, that will continue to seperate America rather then unite like President-elect Obama wants to do, does anyone actually listen to Limbaugh?

Jolene, St. Joseph, MI   November 6th, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Poor Barney, the dog, he’s having a bad day. I hope that the reporter at least got an apology from him (aka the Bush’s)

Joni   November 6th, 2008 10:42 pm ET

OH PLEASE! Anderson I never, ever miss AC360 but I damn near switched channels tonight. Who ever thought that Rush Limbaugh ran the Country? Why do you guys feed into his arrogant, unintelligent gibberish? He needs to go back on those meds he loved so much and then get the hell off T.V.

MaryBeth   November 6th, 2008 10:43 pm ET

I agree that marriage has turned more into a legal institution than a religious one. People don’t go to their churches to get divorced, they go to the courts.

Maureen T   November 6th, 2008 10:43 pm ET

A large percentage of white republicans supported Prop. 8 so they are to blame as well along with a share of the black community!!

Jeff   November 6th, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Let’s be clear. African Americans are engaging in a double standard with regards to the gay marriage ban in California. Let’s talk about rights? If anyone should understand, African American’s you think would be that group. These comments do not by any means clear any other person who has voted to ban gay marriage… why do people care how other people are living their lives? Their relationships are not hurting you.

Erica Hill
CNN
  November 6th, 2008 10:45 pm ET

it’s interesting to compare the discussion tonight to those pre-election day…

Renee   November 6th, 2008 10:45 pm ET

Sorry David Gergen but the drama should be over. It is time for real results.

anderson cooper   November 6th, 2008 10:45 pm ET

good evening everyone.. good discussion tonite

Michael - Springfield, PA   November 6th, 2008 10:45 pm ET

Money talks. I say we boycott any company that supported Prop 8. The LGBT community makes and spends alot of money. Even better, I call on my gay brothers and sisters to leave CA for a state that believes in EQUALITY. California would really be hurting with that tax base gone.

Jolene, St. Joseph, MI   November 6th, 2008 10:45 pm ET

That “Blame Game” sounds more like “He Said, She Said”. No facts just people talking….

Martie   November 6th, 2008 10:45 pm ET

The only thing that bothers me about Bill Richardson was the way he jumped ship on the Clintons. Not that I ever was a huge Clinton supporter, but they certainly did a great deal for his career and he seemed to bail when they needed him most. We can’t know all the particulars, but it doesn’t seem particularly loyal.

Kevin   November 6th, 2008 10:45 pm ET

The passage of Prop. 8 backs up my opinion that America still is not as “free” as it claims to be. If this country is really that “free” we’d be giving the same rights to same sex couples as straight ones. After all, this goes against the constitution’s part saying that a person has a right to liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   November 6th, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Palin was a bad choice, but the Republicans are just looking for a scapegoat. There is plenty of blame to go around.

Stephanie   November 6th, 2008 10:46 pm ET

I don’t believe that the constitution should be used to deny rights to any group of people. Having said that, I just wish that marriage wasn’t the issue.
I have no interest as a lesbian in getting married in the eyes of the church. That should be between me and my church. I should however to be able to enter into a loving legal union with a woman if I choose to. A license is what I want, not a religious marriage.

Stephanie – Indiana

john w   November 6th, 2008 10:46 pm ET

i think former president clinton would be the best addition they could add to the obama administration. and i think it will be a great day if hillary could be appointed as a supreme court justice.

david gergan is my favorite person on the AC 360 panel.

the mccain team needs to stop blaming gov paylin for dragging his ticket down. he would have lost no matter who his VP pick was.

Gary from Illinois   November 6th, 2008 10:47 pm ET

What does the Palin “Blame Game” have anything to do with anything? Lets cover the news. Palin was too much of the focus for the media during the election. And, now after the election you still cant give it up.

Enough already.

almar   November 6th, 2008 10:47 pm ET

That was the saddest note of the election for me, Proposition 8 passing. I do believe there will come the time (and hopefully it will be soon) when we’ll look at these legislations the same way we look at segregation and other discriminatory policies. They’re a shame.

Benz   November 6th, 2008 10:47 pm ET

We should not judge but I will not support same sex marriage but everyone should have equal rights. I prefer a guy to a stupid maverick
who will do anything in the name of God.

Dawn Wilson   November 6th, 2008 10:47 pm ET

Hey Anderson, just watching the comments about prop 8. If we as Americans can elect an African American as our next President, then why can’t we let the gay community marry whom they wish to? Looks like we still have a ways to go as far as accepting people for who they are……..color and sexuality. How sad….

Alan   November 6th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

I find it interesting that we as Americans covet the sanctity of marriage however we maintain a 50% divorce rate. So roughly half the people who can marry without incident end up screwing it up. Maybe its a fear that if we allow gay marriage they will maintain a better ratio.

William Longpre   November 6th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Good evening Anderson
I am extremely happy, impressed and satisfied with the outcome of the election. What a great family only hope the government and people gives Obama the time to make our hopes come true,
Good luck and God speed to the new government.

Melinda   November 6th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

I love you David G. What exactly does “partisan” mean. I guess I don’t get it.

Maureen T   November 6th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Why does it matter who that gentleman is who Oprah was leaning on?

Barbara, Gaffney, SC   November 6th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

I hope the media leaves the children alone. Being a mother myself I would think that Michelle would make sure that their privacy is protected at all times.

Cynthia   November 6th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Wow, they can be vicious and only months ago when Senator McCain announced her as his pick – he said they were soulmates. I guess what he saw in her was just a mirage.

Maureen, Georgia   November 6th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

I did’nt like Palin, she definitely went rogue, but McCain chose her without vetting her properly and now they are blaming her for everything.

Mark Mundy   November 6th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Come on Anderson. Lets just say it out loud, “the Republicans are afraid of Emmanual” because He is a very effective and competent pitt bull. He represents the very confidence an Obama White house needs to portray not only to US citizens But to the rest of the world as well. Also, In the case of prop 8. How sad That the AfricanAmerican and Latino population turned their backs on the Gay and Lesbian communitiy. Gays and Lesbians marched hand in hand with them for their civil rights and now where were they when it came to giving gays those same civil rights? Shame on them!!

Al   November 6th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

tell me why my my partner of 20 years and I should NPT be able to get Married. we Have survived longer than 2 of my siblings and almost as long as my parents lasted before DIvorce.
once again divorce ruined teh institution of Marriage my gay relationship had Nothing to do with it
nor did it have anything to do with the millions and millions of other divorces. the only thing baning would effect negativity would be the lawyers wallets

Jane   November 6th, 2008 10:50 pm ET

It is time we asked FCC to investigate these reporters fueling hatred by filing Palin reports they cannot back up. This is ridiculous.

Angel from Cali   November 6th, 2008 10:50 pm ET

Being from California, I also can’t believe prop. 8 passed. Maybe I’m naive but I didn’t think people could actully fall for all the lies in those ads.

Don, WA   November 6th, 2008 10:50 pm ET

Sarah Palin’s “photographic memory” needs to see some more photographs. That was the problem…not her intelligence but her interests outside the borders of Alaska. But it’s done…leave her alone, and let her reflect and learn and change if she can.

Renuka   November 6th, 2008 10:50 pm ET

Prop 8 has passed. It is ironic that we had a historic moment yesterday, after which a black man will walk with his black wife and black children to live in the White House, when 100 years ago such a thing would have been unthinkable, since today we are in a world, as McCain put it so eloquently, “away from the cruel and prideful bigotry of that time”.
A historic moment such as yesterday’s will happen in the future, when a gay human being will walk with his/her lawful gay spouse along with children of their union into the same White House, and people will be appalled that such a time existed, of cruel and prideful bigotry. It may take some time, but it will happen, because it seems like it takes a long time for a majority of the people to come to their senses.

Mike, Syracuse NY   November 6th, 2008 10:50 pm ET

Didn’t Obama say he believed marriage was between a man and a woman? If so, why would he try to intervene in CA?

Jolene, St. Joseph, MI   November 6th, 2008 10:51 pm ET

Sarah Palin was still getting big crowds at her rally right up to the eve of the elections. How could they say she hurt McCain? McCain needs to step up here and stop this “blame game”. He is ultimately the one who is responsible for how his campaign was ran.

Richard   November 6th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

I find it very upsetting that after all African-Americans have been through to obtain equal rights they would be willing to take away rights from someone else. Practice what you preach. I am bi-racial, my father was black and I am gay. If think that I do not deserve the same right as you to marry the person I love because you disagree with it. You are just as bad as those that tried to take your rights away.

Brandi-bottom of the boot   November 6th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

haha! anderson has an ego!!!! but a good sense of humor as well. lol

Martin   November 6th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

Lesbian and gays are fringe segments of our society and should recognize their place and stop thinking that they can or will have the same rights as the mainstream. Look how long it took to elect someone that looks like Barack Obama….Being gay scares some people even more, which is sad, because two people loving each other is far better than two people trying to kill each other in Iraq.

lynn   November 6th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

What has race got to do with Prop 8? When are Americans going to stop dividing everything up into race? Each voter is a citizen and how they vote is their private matter. I am in favour of gay marriage by the way!!

Jenise   November 6th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

I think it will be good for the soon to be first daughters to be a part of the first African American family to live in the White House. I hope the girls are able to be protected and stay the grounded girls that they appear to be.

Minou, New York City   November 6th, 2008 10:53 pm ET

The girls should be shielded from the press, and I hope they will never be interviewed. kids should never be paraded in front of cameras.

Judy in Illinois   November 6th, 2008 10:53 pm ET

Words cannot describe the elation and pride I feel…this country of ours has proven, at last, that it has grown up; and that we all, as Americans, do have a voice. We cannot be swayed by the intolerant and fearmongers wishing to yet separate and divide us as a nation.
The little girls of the First Family are adorable, and I’m confident will flourish in their new home. I wish them all well in the transition (and in choosing their new puppy!)

Renee   November 6th, 2008 10:53 pm ET

I really hope CNN and all the media leaves these young children alone to be kids.

Stephanie, PA   November 6th, 2008 10:53 pm ET

I would hate to go through my teenage years in the white house. That is so much pressure for a young child– though the Obama’s seem to be very down to earth.

Don, WA   November 6th, 2008 10:53 pm ET

Little kids are kinda like puppies, they’re happy no matter where they are…but the older girl will go through her teens in the white house…wow!

Desirae, Mount vernon, N.Y   November 6th, 2008 10:53 pm ET

the first children will be fine there mom don’t play.

Maureen T   November 6th, 2008 10:53 pm ET

Barack and Michelle Obama will keep those young ladies grounded!!

Martie   November 6th, 2008 10:54 pm ET

As young girls, they’ll probably have a harder time with the inevitable lack of privacy as they blossom into young women. I can’t imagine my every move being watched by the Secret Service.

Cynthia   November 6th, 2008 10:54 pm ET

I think that the Obama girls will be just fine. They are growing up in a loving family where both parents are grounded and obviously love each other.

Nancy   November 6th, 2008 10:55 pm ET

I hope the Obamas’ choose the same approach to raising their daughters in the White House as the Clintons did. Hopefully they will be able to have the same privacy Chelsea was given.

Cortez   November 6th, 2008 10:55 pm ET

@Mike, Syracuse NY

For once I agree with you

Dee F   November 6th, 2008 10:56 pm ET

I totally agree with Barney. Would you like a stranger to touch you? Plus from Barney’s body you could see he didn’t like the reporter.

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   November 6th, 2008 10:56 pm ET

Barney is one smart little guy. He got a photo op free of charge.

Brandi-bottom of the boot   November 6th, 2008 10:56 pm ET

@ alan

another good point! divorce rates are extremely high which is in itself destroying the sanctity of marriage.

erik   November 6th, 2008 10:56 pm ET

If Obama was a republican, then we would have another republican President waiting to take the office. Most of the people who voted made this a race issue. They could care less about rep-vs-dem.

EJ (USA)   November 6th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Night night Anderson

MaryBeth   November 6th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Alan: I don’t think we covet the sanctity of marriage so much as the religiousosity of it.

Susan, Mi   November 6th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

I agree with you Al. I wish I could give you a reason why you and your partner should not be allowed to marry. However, for the life of me, I can’t give you a single reason. Congrats to you and your partner.

Martie   November 6th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Night all.

Great discussion and show. Nite all!

I feel Sarah Palin has been hurt in this election and I don’t feel good about it.

I love the behind the scenes drama on the 360 set.

Bad dog Barney

Very nice newscast Anderson, Erica.

Good night everyone

Gary from Illinois   November 6th, 2008 11:00 pm ET

Off to bed.

Alan   November 6th, 2008 11:00 pm ET

Anderson is right, you have to let dogs smell you first. As long as he didn’t lose a finger its okay to laugh at it.

Don, WA   November 6th, 2008 11:00 pm ET

Wolf…remember…about the predator alien hologram…”if it bleeds you can kill it.” Oh, nevermind…holograms (topograms?) don’t bleed….good luck Wolf!

Kim   November 6th, 2008 11:00 pm ET

Didn’t anyone ever tell those White House press that you never stick your fingers out to a dog? That’s the guy’s fault on that one.

Lorna   November 6th, 2008 11:00 pm ET

the holo/topogram was neat! who says it wasn’t?

great show tonight as always.

Joel   November 6th, 2008 11:01 pm ET

You both were wrong, you should always approach a dog with your hand open palm facing up with your fingers closed.
