The candidates can talk taxes, national security, even a little healthcare but can they talk football? Get ready for a side of last-minute politicking with your Monday Night Football. Did I mention this week’s Redskins-Steelers match up is on Election Eve? Hmmm… Think the Senators will choose a team? With Pennsylvania votes increasingly important, would they dare shun DC to shill for votes? Do a little half-time analysis?
I think it would be nice to mix this one up. Sure, it’s a hugs audience and a major opportunity to reach voters, but if they don’t know what you stand for les than 12 hours before the polls open, they’ve got bigger issues. I say these two lighten up and talk a little football. Grab some wings, a beer and settle in with America for the night, and leave the stump speeches behind. Yeah, like that would happen!

There’s a squirrel problem in northern California, one that could give the rabbits a run for their money. At the University of California-Davis, the squirrel population has surged from zero to 400 in seven years, and now it’s time for action.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention ghosts today – it’s like not eating candy on Halloween! I believe in ghosts but am happy to report I have never met one. I’m sure there are plenty of lovely spirits, but I’d rather not find out first-hand. I babysat in a haunted house growing up, it creeped me out to no end. The mother of that family didn’t believe in ghosts at all, but she told me her ghost-believing friends (who felt “a kind, protective presence” in her kitchen…eek!) recommend speaking to the spirits and letting them know, politely, that you’d prefer they didn’t introduce themselves. So far, they’ve abided by my requests. Things rarely go that smoothly for the “Ghost Hunters”, however.

And a quick reminder to vote – not just on Tuesday, but today! It is nearly impossible to choose one CNN Hero when they are all such inspirational people, but the good news is you don’t have to choose just one. When it comes to CNN Heroes, you can voter early AND often, and it’s all legal! In fact, it’s encouraged.

October 31st, 2008 7:49 pm ET Hi Erica, Speaking of the football game we had this interesting tidbit going around the office today which I thought was interesting! > The Redskins, in fact, are an accurate barometer for presidential elections. According to Steve Hirdt of the Elias Sports Bureau, who coined the term "Redskins Rule" in 2000, the following bromide has held true for the past 17 presidential elections: If the Redskins win their last home game prior to Election Day, the party that won the popular vote in the previous election wins the White House; if the Redskins lose, the party that lost the popular vote in the previous election wins. > In this Monday's case, a Steelers win would forecast an Obama victory; a Redskins win would indicate a McCain win. Happy Halloween =] |

October 31st, 2008 7:58 pm ET When I was first married eons ago we lived in a house that was built before the Civil War and it was haunted. I could hear them walking around; one night I woke up to the piano playing spiritual music – playing it loudly and well – No one in the house but me, my 2 month old baby, and my spouse who was snoring loudly. Talk about creepy – I went down the stairs to see just what was going on and was immediately sorry I did – when I got to the doorway where I could see the piano it stopped playing. Then the sounds of footsteps and creaking boards in the floor started towards me – I was frozen to the spot until the footsteps were about half way across the room and then I bolted upstairs to wake my spouse. He told me I dreamed it.....maybe but it sure felt like I was awake and I still think I was. Creepy. Annie Kate |

October 31st, 2008 8:05 pm ET I may be in the minority, but I love squirrels. There's always a few in my back yard and every so often, I give them corn and peanuts. I already voted for a CNN hero. It was hard to choose because they all deserved it. I wish they could all win. See you, Lilibeth |

October 31st, 2008 8:11 pm ET Erica, I had no idea you believed in ghosts. I personally don't, but I think that's very interesting that you do.: ) As for not having candy on Halloween, I must say I might be guilty of that today- unless Halloween themed cupcakes suffice.; ) Hope your Halloween is going well, Erica.: ) |

October 31st, 2008 8:24 pm ET I used to not believe in ghosts, but when I was a teen, I started noticing these wierd white marks and lights in my photos. I used to try to rationalize that there was something wrong with the cameras (this happened to more than one), lighting, film, or film developing. It was only after I researched these odd images that I found out it is likely to be "paranormal"– yikes!! A few years ago, I purchased my first digital camera and (I know this sounds crazy and/or hokey) before I opened the box, I requested (outloud) that "whoever is putting the paranormal images on my pictures to please stop, because I don't like it." Since then, I have never had any problems with any pictures from any of my cameras (film and digital). I also don't like Quija boards, they scare me. In my opinion, using a Quija board is the same as leaving the door to your home for anyone to enter at free will. I find it mind boggling that this "game" is still being sold! Personally, I have never used one and never will. Have a safe and Happy Halloween! |

October 31st, 2008 8:50 pm ET Thanks Erica! I was not aware that you could vote for more tnat one CNN Hero. I keep putting it off because I could not choose just one. You have reduced my stress, and for that I am truly grateful. Later! |

October 31st, 2008 9:39 pm ET Well to each his own but while I know the shortcomings of the current generation I'd rather not see the shortcomings of my fellow voter. Besides I'd have to put blinders on my old man to keep him from gaping and running into walls. Annie Kate |

October 31st, 2008 10:11 pm ET Happy Halloween! I love you guys, but I'm tired of the election and have found channels with no political commercials. I'll be back when this is all over. As an Eagle fan, I hope the Steelers crush the Redskins. My husband is from Pgh and it will also make him easier to live with. My first trick or treater was Sarah Palin. She and all of the others were adorable. Sorry, no ghosts, but I did wear my witches' hat! Hope you all have a great week-end! Voting early has zapped my interest in the outcome! |
