There was a hushed silence in the media hall as reporters stared up at the screen projecting live images of the control room at CERN.
Lyn Evans, CERN’s director urged us to concentrate our attention on one particular flickering gray computer screen.
He began the countdown. Five.. four… three… two… one.. zero. And then … Nothing.
Well, at least nothing my eyes could see. But the scientists in the control room erupted into cheers and applause. Lots of congratulations all around...
So, clearly something had happened. I looked around...

September 10th, 2008 10:24 am ET God made this earth. He will decide when it comes to a end.Not one scientist will be able to predict the end of time. Not even the angels in heaven know this. God is in control. This is a waste of money. We need to take this money and help the elderly, homeless, children and everyone that need help in the Unite |

September 10th, 2008 10:27 am ET I'm glad you saw the little light to see that it was working – but what is its practical application? After all that money and time to build it what's it's purpose? Annie Kate |

September 10th, 2008 11:33 am ET I read about this a long time ago. I only saw the drawings for it. Then I saw a special about the construction. It's amazing and incredible. It's very exciting. Particle Physics is finally getting a good opportunity to actually experiment. I can't wait to find out the results of their four experiments. I hope we do indeed get to learn more about our universe. You are lucky to be reporting on such a historic event. |

September 10th, 2008 12:17 pm ET I saw a scientist talking about this on TV this morning and it's very exciting. Trying to recreate the theory of the Big Bang is an awesome undertaking. This is science at its best! @ Gail I have one thing to say to you and any other blogger who believes that God exists and created the planet, people, etc. When you understand why you reject all other Gods, you will understand why I reject yours as well. |

September 10th, 2008 1:00 pm ET Gail... I don't know what kind of school you went to or if you did at all, but if you studied History you might know why they called it The Dark Ages!!! Throughout History (of the World not just the US!) the West has profited from scientific discoveries made in the Arab World and China. The Catholic Church suppressed Truth and the spread of knowledge to the people. In the bi-polar world of the Cold War all science was more or less subservient to military needs and purposes. So indeed, the Bible World you live in, is coming to an End!!! |

September 10th, 2008 5:02 pm ET I think you are all wrong. I have seen this in a movie... it was called Stargate, so I say bring it scientists i'm ready for wormholes stellar wars. Either that or Cthulhu himself will come out of the portal and straight up rule the world. Dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria. |

September 10th, 2008 6:51 pm ET This is cool.At least the machine is working properly, and this the beginning of a new frontier of science. Its going to try to find out somethings about the big bang.I believe the universe created itself, the big bang, happened, and over an immense amount of years, stars, and galaxies, and things like that developed. Those are my thoughts. |

September 10th, 2008 7:05 pm ET I was thinking stargate to! But this is not Hollywood special effects. I think I saw the construction on the Discovery channel or the History channel. The entire project is incredible and amazing. I watched the history and the explanation of particle physics last night on the History channel. When you think about how our concept of existance is just living on this planet and then think about our existance in this gigantic universe and the fact that scientists world wide have never ever had the opportunity to even try these types of experiments. Its mind blowing. It makes you realize how small we really are. It makes me think of that funny bit from SNL Deep thoughts by Jack Handy. Basically I am wow'd by the entire thing. |
