September marks the time of year when polar ice cover is at its lowest. After last year’s record low, Arctic researchers say we’re in for another bad year – and what is perhaps an irreversible trend.
On Tuesday, scientists reported another Manhattan-Island-sized chunk broke off an Ice Shelf on Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic.
a University of Illinois site allows you to bring the out-of-sight/out-of-mind Arctic to your desktop. If you want to track the day-by-day status of the Arctic ice cap, and compare it to past years, go here. The images, from the Illinois Polar Research Group, track Arctic ice coverage day by day back to 1979. See for yourself, and let us know what you think.

September 3rd, 2008 4:13 pm ET What I think is that 1979 is a drop in the bucket in terms of "ages". For example "global warming" believers can't explain why the previous Ice Ages ended - that is, before man inhabited the earth/ or before man had undustry to ruin the climate ! "Ages" last more years than we live; we can't say that man affects the climate and it's arrogant to think so |

September 3rd, 2008 4:21 pm ET For the most part, Peter just wasted his time drafting and posting this important message. No one seems to want to hear about this right now. Why? Because it's not convenient at this time. We're focused on drilling more holes and transferring our wealth to the middle east so we can keep driving our 15mpg SUV's to the soccer field. You'll likely hear no mention to reducing CO2 emissions via a serious push for renewable energy sources at the RNC this week. The RNC fundamentals are mostly sound but they have been out of touch with their fundamentals since the Reagan era. So let's not discuss any more of this polar melting nonsense until our costal cities are threatened by slowing rising waters. |
