I doubt that after you read this you will check off that box on your tax form ever again….then again, here’s a little tale about what’s behind that box and you can decide.
Here’s the idea: If taxpayers fund the presidential campaigns, then big money, you know, the usual “bad guys”–big corporations, unions, PACs, contractors–would have less influence. That’s why this system was set up way back in 1971.
In 1974 Congress even took the added step of allowing you to opt-in or opt-out by checking or not checking that box. It wasn’t really a donation. It was a way to tell congress you would like to “earmark” a dollar of federal money for the cause.
Well, that little “check in the box” is now worth $3 dollars on your tax return. And if you are wondering where the money is going, next week turn on CNN and look at all those balloons about to drop.
The Federal Election Commission is giving $34 million dollars of this fund to the political parties so they can… party.
I’m not kidding.
Once again, it was a good idea gone bad. Congress in the ‘70’s wanted to make sure corporations and sponsors had little to no influence in how presidential candidates were selected. And since they were selected at the conventions, then it seemed to make sense for Congress (you and me) to pay for the conventions, too. So the conventions started getting money from taxpayers to throw a party.

August 22nd, 2008 9:31 am ET Drew I wish I could say I am surprised at what you found but I can’t. I don’t check that box - never have and never will. The State of Alabama has a full page of boxes you can check and that they hope you will check - itemized into giving state parks money, education, native americans, etc. etc. Only thing is that if you check one of those boxes and designate an amount it comes out of whatever refund you might have coming back to you and if you owe money then you owe that much more. I don’t check those boxes either. Stingy I guess - or just disgusted that with all the money I pay in taxes they have the nerve to beg for more. Annie Kate |

August 22nd, 2008 10:49 am ET I want to know how much of my tax money has paid for the oil that Obama has used to fly across the sea and how much of my tax dollars will be used on his convention. |

August 22nd, 2008 11:13 am ET If the government would use the extra $’s to reduce the price of gas, we probably could get the price per gallon back to $1.50. Also, why can’t those BIG OIL Exec’s reduce their salaries from $20 billion a year to just a mere $10 billion and maybe we could get the price of gas back down to the price per gallon we paid in the 1960’s. (LOL) |

August 22nd, 2008 12:09 pm ET Drew: This is exactly why I no not check the box. Never have !!!!!! They already waste enough of our tax money !!!!!! The DNC and the RNC should pay for their own conventions. Susan |

August 22nd, 2008 1:45 pm ET Let’s hope whoever gets into the WH can make the box go away, since they are all in favor of campaign reform. Besides, the national committees are now using loopholes in the campaign finance laws to raise money anyway so the whole thing is no longer viable. |

August 22nd, 2008 2:28 pm ET I wonder why they like parties and baloons so much? May it’s because baloons subliminally represent blowhards, and the party message: We beat the other guys, now we can have fun. |

August 22nd, 2008 4:46 pm ET Can you say which party it goes to? I don’t want the Republicans to have a dime of my money. After Senator Obama opted out of public financing - they should make it the norm for all. |
