Ed Henry
White House Correspondent
Watched CNN’s excellent documentary “McCain Revealed,” which showed the many times in his life the Republican presidential candidate has decided to “move on,” as John King put it, to the next challenge.
John McCain is facing another big fork in the road now: Should he go with his gut and pick a good friend like Independent Democrat Joe Lieberman or moderate Republican Tom Ridge as his running mate?
Such a move would underline McCain’s efforts to project a maverick image. But it also might shake up the race too much for the liking of conservatives, who are not keen on the fact that Lieberman and Ridge both support abortion rights.
Conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh is warning such a move would lead to the destruction of the Republican Party. Other activists are not speaking in such dire terms, but nonetheless are warning that conservatives will stay home in November and help elect Democrat Barack Obama instead.
The alternative is for McCain to go a bit safer — select someone like Mitt Romney or Tim Pawlenty. Both solid picks in the eyes of many conservatives, but not quite the bold stroke that some McCain advisers would like to see.
McCain friends talk about how unpredictable the Senator is, and with the Republican brand pretty damaged right now, some of his allies would like to see him roll the dice with a running mate who may remake the future of the party.
But is the risk worth the reward in the short term? How McCain answers that question may be pivotal in deciding who will be the nation’s 44th president.

August 21st, 2008 9:27 am ET I don’t see what Tom Ridge would add to the ticket and to pick him just to jig things up probably isn’t worth the risk. Lieberman though might be a good pick and I say that because of his interest and support on environmental issues. When you get right down to it though Romney may have more to offer the country and McCain than the other two - his economic talents are sorely needed right now. I frankly hope McCain goes with Romney - like they’ve said in the past - its all about the economy! Annie Kate |

August 21st, 2008 9:28 am ET I think that McCain should go with what he feels is the best choice for him. He shouldn’t bow to the masses. You can’t please everyone all of the time. Look at Obama…he is trying that and he has dropped considerably in the polls. You have to take a stand at some point in your life to do what you believe is right no matter what others say. In the end the conservatives will vote for McCain because Obama is too far away from what they believe on the issues. Besides that the VP doesn’t make any decisions unless the president dies and they take office. Cindy…Ga. |

August 21st, 2008 9:44 am ET I thought McCain Revealed was great! Why would it matter if McCain picked Lieberman or Ridge. They wouldn’t make policy, just support McCain.Would it really be so bad? Maybe it would be nice to have a moderate someone to give a different perspective.I think Rush is just being Rush.I think McCain wouldn’t be a maverick if he didn’t reach out and pick someone to keep some balance.Someone different.Especially since Bush redefined what the VP does by picking Cheney. I think McCain should go with his gut.He should pick someone he feels comfortable with because four years is a long time with the wrong person and I can’t see McCain very patient when he is unhappy. |

August 21st, 2008 10:38 am ET McCain needs to show the GOP that there are paybacks for what they did to him in 2000. McCain could “give” the White House to Obama. Wouldn’t it be the ultimate payback for McCain to do something incredibly stupid “on purpose” just before the election so Obama wins? Lol…………We all know the nation needs an Obama right now…….not another Republican. McCain………..put aside the ego. Get the nomination in Sept. Then………..show the GOP you are a maverick…………show us the man from 20 yrs ago, that did what was best for the country. THAT would be the game changer…….Lol……..wow would that be funny………. |

August 21st, 2008 12:26 pm ET It doesn’t matter to me who he picks. I am voting for him, for the simple fact, that The Republicans, didn’t make any back-room deals,so he could be their nominee. |

August 21st, 2008 12:35 pm ET I am hoping that McCain keeps his maverick streak. The reason is that perhaps this could be the year that moderate republicans and independents take the party away from the right wing. The right wing has almost made this election unwinnable. Alas, the maverick has made this a horse race. For my money the far right and the far left are extremists and need to step aside while the center runs the country. McCain looks better every day. |

August 21st, 2008 12:46 pm ET Interesting remark, “some of his allies would like to see him roll the dice with a running mate who may remake the future of the party.” My interpretation of that is, his (friends) are so sure McCain can’t remake the future of the party that the future of the Nation depends solely on his choice for VP being a good one or a bad one! This remark tells me that McCain supporters and friends are convinced he hasn’t got what it takes to run the Nation and therefore his VP selection is crucial! This is more than shocking it is outright scandalous that a party would elect a nominee in which they have zero Faith in to run their Nation! And one they feel can’t handle the position! Add that to not knowing how many houses he owns for 13 million dollars and the need for Fund Raisers to finance his Campaign! What kind of a leader doth that make? Bring on the Gravol. ONWARD OBAMA the Nation’s Salvation depends solely on you! |

August 21st, 2008 12:56 pm ET Henry you have some good points. I think the VP pick should be Pro-life. I like Lieberman and Ridge but they are Pro-choice. We all know that McCain will probaly not run for another term if he becomes President. So that means the VP choice needs to be ready to lead the Rep. Party for the next elections. I think he shoud consider a female. However, I am not sure who would be the strongest pick. The Conservative voters will never back a Pro-Choice candidate. |

August 21st, 2008 1:22 pm ET John MCain wants to maverick probloby but ot appease the conservatives in the senate he must choose a safer bet like Romney or Pawlenty. It will be intersting to see who he chooses and will stay close to being a true blue republican? or lean towards a more independant side of the coin. Michelle |
