Democrats jumped on a comment by John McCain that seemed to suggest he was unsure of how many homes he owned – the latest move in a series of attacks designed to paint the presumptive Republican nominee as wealthy and out-of-touch with ordinary Americans.
“I understand Senator McCain was asked yesterday this question: ‘how many houses do you own?’ And he couldn’t answer that question,” Virginia Governor and VP contender Tim Kaine told CNN’s John Roberts in an interview on American Morning. “He couldn’t count high enough to know how many houses he owns
“We have Americans struggling, with foreclosures skyrocketing in Virginia and elsewhere, gas prices, jobs slowing down and the deficit at a record level. We have to have somebody who can change the direction of this economy. John McCain won’t do it, but Barack Obama understands the new economy and he will…”

August 21st, 2008 12:58 pm ET surely you got to be kidding me! out of touch with the ordinary American?wealthy? We stayed home this summer….did not have the necessary funds to go vacation….we enjoyed a “staycation…the Obama campaign seemed to enjoy their collective vacation in Hawaii..in touch with the ordinary American? I say not! |

August 21st, 2008 1:04 pm ET Also , why doens’t someone ask McCain , how many war fronts do we need to open , since he agreed w/ a lady @ one of his town halls, that the draft should be reinstated. Reb |

August 21st, 2008 1:07 pm ET Please; the number of houses owned by politicians is staggering due to sweetheart loans and tax payers unwittingly footing the bill. Any politician that attempts to call out another should be laughed off the stage. I’m confident that the Federal Government paid Bank of America to buy Countrywide’s fraud factory just to hide all the sweetheart loans. Grifters one and all. |

August 21st, 2008 1:15 pm ET I guess when you have at least eight houses you can’t always remember to pay property taxes on; it’s easy enough to have a senior moment when recounting exactly how many you have, |
|

August 21st, 2008 1:16 pm ET I would think that McCain’s comment regardinghis favoring the reinstatement of the draft would be garnering more attention by the press. |

August 21st, 2008 1:23 pm ET Who the hell cares how many houses he has, how immature and petty, is this all they have to attack McCain, what a waste of dialog , this Tim Kaine with his wacky hairdo matches the incompetence level of Obama, worse case senerio , he’s nowhere near the qualifications to be president should something happen, and that’s what voters need to seriously concider , so unworthy, and sooo underquailified, looks like the Obama camp was replaced by the high school debate team , Just wait till those Town Hall meetings , just wait until the debates between McCain and Obama air, Obama can wave bye bye to every little point in the polls, a huge hard to ignore revalation ,Obama is incapable of holding up that’s why he hates debates that’s why he has nightmares about unscripted questions. August 21st, 2008 1:41 pm ET How much of this can the American public witness before they will understand what is best for this struggling country of ours. He can’t tell us what he believes “rich” is. Now he has no idea how many homes he owns. People, people……….stop falling for a Republican all the time. They don’t understand or much care about what we average joes go through day in and day out. I am an Independent…….I will be voting for Obama. The least you Dems can do is to support YOUR chosen candidate. Doesn’t matter who his VP is. Don’t you want more for yourselves and your children? |
|

August 21st, 2008 1:46 pm ET Does it really matter how many houses that McCain has? Is it anyones business really!? The media needs to get off of this inane stuff and get the focus back on the issues that really matter. How many houses someone has won’t effect us at all! Why don’t you all ask Obama about his housing scandal with Rezco!? That is way worse than McCain not knowing how many houses he has! But that has been swept under the rug because of him being the media darling. I guess being corrupt doesn’t count when the media already has you branded as the winner huh!? Cindy…Ga. |

August 21st, 2008 1:50 pm ET McCain has no idea what middle class is all about. He doesn’t know how many houses he owns, claims to be “rich” is to make $5000,000 a year, he wants to keep the Bush tax cuts in place for his “rich” friends & thinks the economy will work itself out if things are left the way they are now. I don’t doubt he agrees with one of his supporters who claim Americans are “whiners”. His only concern is to be in control of the military, it is the only topic that animates him whatsoever. Clear choice between the candidates, if you think things are fine the way they are & don’t care about ending the war in Iraq or getting involved with other conflicts involving Iran, Russia etc. McCain is the one for you. Anyone who would like to see the economy grow, jobs, health care, more respect from foreign nations will vote for Obama. |

August 21st, 2008 2:15 pm ET Tim Kaine told CNN’s John Roberts in an interview on American Morning. “He couldn’t count high enough to know how many houses he owns.” This is the most singularly childish comment I’ve ever heard from any politician of either party. The Democrates are clearly getting desperate. |

August 21st, 2008 2:23 pm ET And this is a reason not to vote for him because…. By the way, I’m not sure how many homes my husband would say he owns. He’s too busy to know. I’ll bet McCain/s wife handles the home front, just like I do. He’s no more out of touch than most of the men I know. In other words - this is a Mars and Venus thing. After X number of days campaigning, I wouldn’t be surprised if he can’t remember his home address. |

August 21st, 2008 2:44 pm ET Oh goody!!! Another wealthy polictician who wants to be POTUS who does not know what it means to be on the verge of becoming homeless. Tax paying citizens are homeless and people can die as a result. Does anyone give give a damn?? |

August 21st, 2008 3:23 pm ET If I was McCain I would say. YES, I AM A RICH MAN AND I AM NOT ASHAMED TO HAVE MANY HOMES AND I WANT THE SAME FOR ALL AMERICAN FAMILIES. I WANT TO BE PRESIDENT AND HELP AMERICAN FAMILIES TO HAVE MANY MORE HOMES. What’s wrong with being rich? being elitist and being rich is two different things. you don’t have to be rich in order to be elitist. |

August 21st, 2008 3:29 pm ET Macain is to worried about what war he can get us into just like every warmongering republican out there….4 more years of senseless war |

August 21st, 2008 4:25 pm ET It is really suprising that John McCain doesn’t know how many houses he own? I’m not sure he knows anything that is going on anymore. John McCain has already served his country,he doesn’t need to be President. |

August 21st, 2008 4:34 pm ET The childish candidate is making childish comments while his childish supporters whoop it up and laugh. Meanwhile in the real world Obama thinks the Georgians should behave and not provoke Russia. That is just like telling a woman with 3 broken ribs and a black eye she should not provoke her husband. The Obama supporters think that shows leadership. |

August 21st, 2008 4:37 pm ET It’s about time someone jumped on something. This guy has been cake walking through all of this. The media has deliberately ignored all his gaffes. I’m still waiting to hear you guys cover his desire to reenact the draft. |

| Nicole in Alabama |
August 21st, 2008 4:39 pm ET There is nothing wrong with being rich but I have a serious problem with McCain protraying Obama as an elitist or being out of touch with the American people because of his wealth. Obama (including Michelle) has “worked” for everything that they have like most American through education and determination so their kids can have a better life than they had so they can afford to have family vacations in Hawaii. The Obama Family is a true picture of the American Dream that we all work hard for. McCain simply “married” into wealth. He has too many houses to keep count, owns a private jet and consider being rich when you have at least 5 million. Now tell me who is really out of touch. |
|
| Kristina |
August 21st, 2008 4:41 pm ET Who cares about the houses? Why aren’t you people covering the fact that agreed with a woman who wanted to reimplement the draft. That is of far more significance and, of course, your network won’t cover it. |

August 21st, 2008 4:47 pm ET To Cindy in Ga: Please lets not talk about sweeping anything under the rug. McCain talked about in a town hall meeting recently about reinstating the draft which proves that he only thinks about war and is still stuck in Viet Nam. Where is the media coverage on this. It surely is more important than talking about how many houses he has. And there are lots of other news worthy stories about McCain and his family that doesn’t make the news so suck it up. |

August 21st, 2008 4:49 pm ET Who gives a rats-behind how many homes he has. Why don’t we ask Republicans, to look into Obamas sweetheart deal, for his home? It’s a shame that the only dirty The Obama Camp can fling at Sen. McCain, is this kindergarten crap. I think Obamas afraid to toss to much mud, for fear all of it will come right back to him, with his racist friends. |
|
| Susan |
August 21st, 2008 4:55 pm ET It matters a lot how many houses he has - because he put the issue in play stating Obama is an elitist and casting dispersions on his ability to be president because of it. So by McCain’s standards of what is important we are having public debate - including Paris Hilton and Britney Spears - not any of the real issues. It also makes him look shifty - just admit that you have 8 houses - where’s the straight talk he promised! |

August 21st, 2008 5:00 pm ET That question was as dumb as would be asking Obama how many relatives he has. |

August 21st, 2008 5:05 pm ET I am sorry but I thought we don’t live in a socialist country I wonder if Obama is going to question Oprah on the number of houses she has, |
|
| Gladys |
August 21st, 2008 5:06 pm ET When I first heard that McCain has 7 houses, I thought McCain can’t tell me ****. Then I thought about it. OK, yes he has the right to be rich, he has the right to be a billionaire if he wants to. However, he needs to be more in touch with the challenges that people in the middle and lower class face. Oprah , a billionaire, she is worth more than both Cindy and John McCain put together. I have never heard anyone call her elitest. But the difference is McCain is out of touch with everyday people. McCain can have all the money he wants and then some, but he needs to be able to identify with everyday people and have some kind of sincerity about it. The way he told a joke about how someone with a $5 million dollar income is rich it doesn’t seem like he does. |

August 21st, 2008 5:11 pm ET After reading some of the replies here I am also wondering why the media did not talk about Senator McCain saying that the possibility of insituting the draft has not been mentioned. I would think that this is something important that the American people should at least know about. Come on CNN where is the story? |

August 21st, 2008 5:19 pm ET This is really petty, stupid and childish. So what. There are celebs who have just as many maybe even more.Have you asked any of them to count them? I can’t believe that’s all the Dems could come up with. |

August 21st, 2008 5:32 pm ET Do we really want a person to lead this country who has no clue how many houses he owns? Talk about being out of touch! I’m not gung ho with Obama either but all this Obama bashing on him being an elitist is hypocritical when McCain doesn’t even know how many homes he has much less know how much money makes a person rich. I wish the media would bring up the fact that McCain is a supporter of illegal “immigrants” as is Obama and ask them why they would support cheap labor that’s eroding our economy, schools and health care. |
|
| James Dylan |
August 21st, 2008 5:43 pm ET McCain owns some houses, so what. What do the democrats want to take them away from him? People get upset people are loosing their homes, but it is their fault they bought things they couldn’t afford. Believe me I know some of these people and told them so before they bought them. They said it’s “interest only for five years.” And after that it jumped up well passed their income level. Dumb is the word that comes to mind. It is seemingly starting to go hand in hand with the democratic party. |

August 21st, 2008 5:57 pm ET Oh yeah Larry….How many homes do you own? How many relatives do you have? I bet its alot easier for you to answer the first, probably zero. |

August 21st, 2008 8:32 pm ET You know noone seems upset how Barack Obama obtained his house. With help from a convict. This is a pathetic attempt at a attack. Home ownership is a wonderful right we have in this country.Being wealthy whatever that means to you. That could be monetary or something else is not bad it’s good. John McCain happened to marry someone who’s family owns a very profitable beer distributorship. So what. I agree with John.I also think if anyone is going to attack anyone it should be done based on policy decisions.Or past affiliations with corrupt people or extremists. If Obama wants to attack McCain attack his policy. |

August 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET So now its important who has what and how many? How many houses did each of the past presidents including JFK have when they were President? I think you will find they had multiple houses as well. Its sad that we are talking about how many houses a candidate has instead of the issues. People who run for President are generally better off than the average American but this doesn’t mean they can’t be an effective President. Annie Kate |

August 22nd, 2008 2:06 am ET With 3+ of McCain’s homes being investments, it tells me that he knows how to make sound financial decisions. So he isnt suffering…My thoughts towards the person who is going to lead my country, I believe in order to lead well, You lead by EXAMPLE! I find comfort in that fact that he is financially sound, it tells me that He might know a thing or two about making a financially sound country as well…which would be bettering our economy. And How is it that Obama is participating in/initiating the very politics He wants so “desperately” to Change? McCain’s statement, “I am not questioning his patriotism, I am questioning his Judgement” Well stated McCain…Seeing that McCain does seem to have a “little” experience in the military. A man who was willing to put the lives of the other POW’s before his own…POW’s who he didnt even know…This tells me that if he had a greater concern for their well-being than he did his own, It probably would be a safe bet that he cares about my well-being a great deal too. |

August 22nd, 2008 11:02 am ET The ‘real’ question asked the Sen. was how many homes do you AND YOUR WIFE own. As Cindy is the rich one in that family (much much richer than her husband that is) he really doesn’t know where all her money is and if he answered incorrect we would all be talking about another of his senior moments IE Catch 22. Be careful talking about what he (or in REALITY SHE owns) it was only a few years ago since another person was running in a presidential race and his wife is also Rich (with a capital R). The same question asked of Mr Kerry would have produced a similar answer. Mrs HEINS Kerrys wife is MUCH richer then Mrs. McCain in fact. That catchup fortune is worth a mint (pun intended) and the Dems and Obama supporters are on the loosing end of this argument and a simple look at the tax returns of all parties would show the FACTS and you can’t argue with that but I would think the Obama supporters and Obama himself will certainly try. Nice try making yet another stereotype the truth. ……and the hate goes on. |
