Morning Buzz: The Greatest Olympian EVER!!!!

Good Morning folks...

Michael Phelps is the winningest Olympian EVER! 11 gold medals!!! Even when his goggles malfunctioned during the first race of a golden morning in China, the 23-year-old American squinted through water-filled lenses on the way to, yes, ANOTHER world record. He now has FIVE Golds in Beijing, and he has three more races to go...can you say MORE GOLD? Hands down he is the GREATEST OLYMPIAN EVER, there is NOW no disputing that....

In other news this am... Georgia's president accused Russia on Wednesday of violating the terms of a cease-fire deal by attacking and "rampaging" through the Georgian town of Gori. As I speak, the Russian tanks are attacking the town of Gori and are rampaging through the town," President Mikheil Saakashvili told a news conference. "There is marauding. There is destruction of buildings." However journalists in Gori said they had seen NO Russian tanks. Residents there told the journalists they had earlier seen "some" Russian tanks, but not in large numbers. Russia said its tanks were not in the city. The cease-fire plan was announced Tuesday...but it appears it may NOT be over...Mathew Chance continues reporting for us from Tblisis...

AND remember the story that Randi Kaye brought us about the pregnancy "pact" in Gloucester, Massachusetts..well, the high school principal who set off a furor after being quoted as saying that teenage girls formed a pact to get pregnant has resigned...Last June that Joseph Sullivan said a pact made by a group of teens to get pregnant and raise their babies together was at least partly behind a spike in pregnancies at Gloucester High School. Seventeen girls at the school became pregnant this year - four times the usual number. We are efforting an interview with him, if we land it we will bring it to you tonight...

On the trail today...Obama is still on vacation, though holding fundraisers. Candy Crowley reports from Hawaii tonight for us.... His campaign just announced that former Virginia Governor Mark Warner will deliver the keynote address at the 2008 Democratic Convention on Tuesday, August 26th, the second night of the Convention. The campaign calls him an "innovative businessman known for his ability to work Republicans, Democrats and Independents," and "that Warner’s vision for Virginia and his leadership style echoed the Convention’s theme of Americans coming together for change."

John McCain is back in Michigan - yes one of those swing states... How many times has he campaigned there since winning his party's nomination? I have NO clue, but a lot!!! Tonight we look at those swing states, and with the polls saying the election is sooo tight, states like Michigan could decide the next President...

Gary Tuchman does tonight only what Gary Tuchman can do - he gives us an inside look at Meghan McCain. She is candid, freewheeling, interesting, and maybe sometimes a bit too blunt. Meghan McCain, the 23 year old daughter of John and Cindy McCain spends much of her time travelling with her campaigning father, and has her own blog site with daily observations that sometimes look like the gossip pages of a newspaper. In her blog, Meghan McCain talks about life on the trail which includes how much she loves and supports her father. But she also talks about clothes, shoes, gossip, and other things that don't always seem so presidential. But indeed, that may be just what John McCain needs to get a few more younger people's votes.

AND finally, Randi Kaye looks at the evidence in the Caylee Anthony case: the dna, what the cadaver dogs found, air samples taken, her mom, Casey's statements. Randi breaks it down BUT raises some still lingering questions...If Caylee is indeed dead, and they don't ever find a body, do they have enough to charge her mom, Casey Anthony? Tune in tonight...

That is all for now...

Hey Anderson
i wish you a verry good day,far away from germany.
thats for now, lets see what the day will bring.i hope better news from georgia.happy usa for this" golden boy" olympic winner.

Cindy   August 13th, 2008 8:24 am ET

CONGRATS to Michael Phelps!! Just goes to show you what determination and a lot of hard work will get you. Hopefully young kids these days will get a clue and see that hard work does pay off and that everything isn't just handed to you.

I knew that Russia wouldn't stick to the cease fire plan!! They want to take over Georgia so that they can control the oil route. If they don't stop bombing and continue their tirade the U.S. will really be in a predicament since we need their help with Iran. Can we really afford to "P" them off?

It seems like to me that the principal in Gloucester is being punished for letting out the towns dirty little secret of the pregnancy pact and making them all look bad. I bet they forced the resignation!

Mark Spitz wanted to be invited to these Olympics, and he should have been but wasn't, to witness Phelps breaking his own record (assuming that he does do that!). I remember watching Spitz swim in the 1972 Olympics – a very exciting time.

Mary   August 13th, 2008 8:39 am ET

The US Olympians Rock!!
Georgian President seems to be trying to spin things his way.
I still think that it is a little more that a coincidence that 17 girls are pregnant. What is the average class size of that school? 17 babies will have children for parents, a little self centered don't you think.
I am glad that Randi Kaye is running down the evidence. I am quite confused about this case. Sounds like a great show. Have a great day.

Kristen- Philadelphia, PA   August 13th, 2008 9:32 am ET

I stayed up extra late despite my 5am alarm to see Phelps win last night. It’s truly amazing to see how fast this guy is, a great Olympian indeed.

I am kind of confused on this story with Russia and Georgia. What are they fighting over if someone would not mind telling me that would be great?

The only way I would want to hear from this pregnancy pact principal is if he tells the truth about what went down. I feel the school system tried to cover this up and if he continues to cover their tracks then who cares what he has to say.

Candy has one great job, oh how I wish to be in Hawaii. Usually I enjoy Gary’s reports but sorry to say I don't care about Meghan McCain and I really doubt she will give him the young vote. I am in that category (22) and we are not that easily influenced. If John McCain can't talk to us himself effectively then his daughter is not going to cut it.

Randi always gets interesting cases that need piecing together. I’m sure she will do a great job. But I will be getting my Olympic fix tonight so I will have to catch 306 when I wake up at 5 tomorrow. Yall have a great day.

Annie Kate   August 13th, 2008 9:32 am ET

I realize that Caylee is probably dead but for the sake of her grandparents and all the people that are supporting them and helping to look for her, I hope the story ends differently. As to charging her mom I seem to remember either Jeff Toobin, or Lisa Bloom or Jamie Floyd talking with Anderson on another case and saying that without a body its hard to make a case that a jury can convict on without a reasonable doubt.

Meghan McCain sounds a lot like her father. I'm looking forward to Gary's story on her.

Will be interesting to see what happens with Russia and Georgia. If McCain is right and Russia is trying to put back together the Russian Empire of the tsars, we may see them not only try to take Georgia but the Ukraine as well. I've thought from the beginning that Russia was making a move to rebuild their country – the rising nationalism in their society and the eclipse of Russia as a country in recent years make for a fertile environment for this sort of idea to take hold with the Russian people. I just really hope the US can be allies this time with Russia and not have another Cold War – one was enough.

Morning Anderson, It's hump day, I love watching Michael Phelps, he is the greatest athlete ever, he reminds of you Anderson, great drive and enthusiasm. GO MICHAEL GO!

Sandra, Wadley Ga   August 13th, 2008 9:43 am ET

Good morning Anderson:

Congratulations to Michael Phelps; what an athelete and he proves to the world eyesight is not needed to break world records and win gold in swimming. I hope to hear more good news today; it seems to be a shortage of that lately.

Presley from Michigan   August 13th, 2008 9:45 am ET

Yes, it's exciting about Michael Phelps and no, I still haven't watched any of the Olympics, who needs to, I read all about all over the internet and coverage hi-lites on my local news.
(I'm more of a winter Olympic woman)

Hey now, I'm in Michigan and I don't swing *rim shot*
McCain visiting again, it explains the gray weather....Maybe Focus On The Family got a wire crossed.

Now I have to go walk my Chupacabra, we'll wave HI to the Yeti for Anderson.

XXO 360 Staffers that wade through these comments.

deborah, OH   August 13th, 2008 10:11 am ET

Good morning Anderson, Erica & all,
Michael Phelps is indeed an amazing young man & athlete. He is truly a role model kids can look up to.

Georgia is a tragic situation. And I do hope that Bush has enough brains (yeah, right), to stay out of there militarily. Of course, we should give all diplomatic efforts all our support. It's too bad that the UN has become so political–it used to do some good things, but sadly, not anymore.

And there are some reporters writing that Obama's Hawaiian vacation shows how 'out of touch' he is with most of the country, When gas prices are sooo high, & most people can't afford ANY vacation, he goes there, NOW, people are starting to question his elitism.

Have a good day Anderson & all!

Michelle Fonthill Ont,Canada   August 13th, 2008 10:52 am ET

Hi Anderson and Staff at 360
Michael Phelps is awsome having won 5 gold metals and not let anything get in his way not even a wardrobe malfunction .This is one of the greatest moments ever way to go! The show looks really interesting tonight with the story of Caylee as the investigation continues into her whereabouts I can only hope and pray they bring her home soon.
Thanks for the morning buzz
see you all on 360
Michelle

Heather   August 13th, 2008 11:24 am ET

Michael Phelps is amazing!!! Even his competition is in awe of him.I think Mark Spitz is just jealous which is sad.He should be proud to have inspired Mike to want to break his records.

Larry   August 13th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

I'm hoping that actor Jon Voight, dad of Angelina, really doesn't get blacklisted in hollywood for being conservative in a liberal town and for questioning the depth of the vetting of obama.

Melissa, Los Angeles   August 13th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

Michael Phelps is truly amazing. I watched him swim last night by himself and in the relay and was amazed at how fast they all went. All true Olympians! I can't say the same for Spain's basketball team though. I'm surprised you haven't blogged about their racist ad. In this day do people really think it's ok to pull back the skin of their eyelids? I haven't seen that since I was in elementary school when kids did that to me.

Marcia   August 13th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

Sorry Missy,, Spitz just wants to relive his glory days through Michael. If he wanted to be there to cheer Michael on then he should have found his own way there. Apparently he wanted to be recognized and not just sit in the stands with the other spectators. He had his day in the sun, now it's Michael's turn.

Jan from Wood Dale IL   August 13th, 2008 12:52 pm ET

Not only is Michael Phelps an outstanding athelete on his own, he's a champion for his fellow teammates. But more importantly, after each victory Michael searches for his mother and sisters in the crowd. He is not shy about expressing his love and appreciation for his family and the sacrifices they have made on his behalf.

So far, each of our team USA Olympic atheletes have given us plenty of reasons to be proud.

Dave   August 13th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Thats how the USA roles.

Sharon Walker   August 13th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Dear Friends:
Great Performance for Michael Phelps and each and every one of the USA Olympians. We are proud of your achievement of excellence!

Well Deserved each and every other medalist a great Olympic experience and challenge.

So too are great singers no matter what age!!! No matter what nation they are from. During the Olympics a child so small who's voice and spirit captured the hearts of the world. So sad that China diminishes such a tremdous performance. Historical this event and a child is made to feel that her spiritual expressions should be ashamed, God have no mercy on those who make a child feel embarassed or sad.
The child who was used for the camera is also precious!
The olympian a medal the singer a dungeoun of dark dragons of shame.

Has not the world heard great operas these stars too were once children. Has not the world heard of the ugly duckling, the story where it turns into a SWAN!!!!!! GOD HELP US!

Jenn/Monrovia, CA   August 13th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Watching Phelps last night was stunning, you can't believe this kid is for real, and I watched in in 04 in Athens. I wonder if he's part dolphin?

Martina Ilstad   August 13th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Hey Anderson
i watched cnn, listening russian ang georgia politcal talking to each other like little childen in"kinderkarten"give forth to each other.i dont know who tells the truth, and who ly but that doesnt matter.all they have to do is save poeples lives and end this war.i know this will be a big problem for both f sides, but they can do, without loosing their political face infront the hole
wold.

Heather   August 13th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

Okay for anyone who doesn't already know,NASA designed and built all the swimsuits for our team this year. The hem's on all of them are sealed with a laser. They make them swim faster.Pretty cool having NASA take car of our athletes.

Jo Ann   August 13th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

Congratulations to Michael Phelps! What a beautiful athlete! He is definitely the star of these Olympics. Michael makes each and every swim an exciting event; his enthusiasm is unparalleled!

It seems that a BBC reporter in Gori was an eyewitness to the fact that the Russians have violated the cease-fire. Like everything else, it seems to be about controlling the oil routes. If the Russians seize or destroy the Georgian controlled pipeline to Supsa, oil prices will go even higher. Make no mistake about it, Putin is still pulling the strings, maybe he has illusions of recreating the old USSR. If that is true and Georgia falls the Ukraine could be next.

No matter what, the US is in a perilous situation here.

I hope that Matthew and all the other journalists over there stay safe!

I think Michael Phelps nickname should be Aquaman. The guy is just legendary, and he is smashing Olympic records in every event. 11 golds now. That is utterly amazing. Go Aquaman, Go!

Hello To All AC360,
i think Michael Phelps is an Olympic Hero! Bravo for his exceptional performance!!:)

Rose from Southern Calif   August 13th, 2008 6:01 pm ET

Hi, Anderson and his staff....

Great job, to Michael Phelps to bad Mark Spitz was not there to congratulate him. Hopefully he did it without any help if you know what I mean?

Russia is being a big bully, what else is new? Russia need a kick in the butt! The international world need to get together and punish Russia in some way so they will know we mean business

Meghan McCain...how much of the real world have she seen in her 23 years on this earth? The young people of today most of them have to earn a living and still are struggling to make ends.meet. How is she going to connect with these voters, all her life she has been privileged? Can Meghan live in the middle of Los Angeles for a year without any help from her family?

Charlee   August 13th, 2008 6:24 pm ET

Michael Phelps deserves to have the Gold he has won so far. Congratulations. He has trained hard through the years to do this. Michael Phelps is indeed talented.

Danny Jin   August 14th, 2008 11:15 am ET

he is really a flying fish...I respect him so much....
