Georgia's president said Friday that his country is under attack by Russian tanks and warplanes, and he accused Russia of targeting civilians as tensions over the breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia appeared to boil over into full-blown conflict.

Somebody has to listen. What are Obama's and McCain's positions on Russia and China!? before the election!
Following is my post in a Candy Crawley article on
July 24th, 2008 12:36 pm ET – 3 weeks ago!!! I have been saying for months!
-----
Candy, Ich bein ein
Russia and China are the hidden campaign issues. Does Obama have no thoughts and McCain have crazy thoughts?
Simple question to Obama> ‘Do you agree with McCain’s plan to boot Russia from the G8 and bar China?’
What about the recent move by Russia to patrol Arctic waters, first time since the Cold War? (NOW GEORGIA)
Yes, Iran Iraq Afghanistan Pakistan Israel Palestine are important and noisy issues. Classify Russia and China as ’silent but deadly’ over the next decade.
McCain has ’stated’ his philosophy in dealing with these World Powers. It would only be a matter of balanced journalism to reveal Obama’s positions!
----
Russia HAS nuclear weapons. Iran and Afghanistan do NOT!

Martina Ilstad   August 8th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

There are terrible pictures from georgia today.battles, tunks in the streets
in a area who whants to be a eu member, but russian can not except it.
russian president calls it defending lives of russian citizens.will it be the
same infention russian-afganistan than russian-georgia?
get georgia help from the intern.communitians or will USA or EU help?
there is started a war on the same day the "peacfull olympic games" started.stop that war!!!!!!

Maddworldz   August 8th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

This is not America's problem. Bush out of his own mouth quoted "That if a country is threatened. That country has the right to pre strike that country without futher notice." So why is it good for Americans and not any other country. This is the new age of war seen by the world through the Bush policies.

Cindy   August 8th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

Hey...I feel bad for them but we aren't the world's police force. We can't run to everyone's rescue! Hopefully the UN will do something..yeah who am I kidding!? LOL

I have a daughter/son-in-law living in Novosibirsk, Russia. He works for Schlumberger. She emails that they are safe and if not Schlumberger will get them out. What do you say?

Russia-forever   August 8th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

georgians killed 1400 ossetins!
and the us support them!
and now who is under attack???

Roman   August 8th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Russia is just defending its citizens (a lot of peace people under Georgia's fire). Russian peace forces with UN madate also were under Georgia's direct fire – at least 10 dead and 30 wounded during this day! It's a defending and completely adequate answer to the perfidious agression of Georgia and its genocide in relation to the Ossetians people (this night Georgia fired scools, hospitals and peace population by rocket installations "GRAD" and Georgia's tanks). About 90% of people in the South Ossetia are citizens of Russia. A lot of dead in the Tkeshelashvili city. This city is ruined almost completely by Georhia's fire during this night and day.
What do you want from Russia?! To leave our people to die? To let Georgia's military forces to kill Ossetia women and children?!

Bob Donaghue   August 8th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

This attack, in some ways, is a result of the US being overstretched militarily around the world. The USSR attacked Afganistan under a similar scenario when the US was preoccupied and appeared weak.

Roman   August 8th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

In my previous comment the city is Tskhinvali (South Ossetian capital) of course, sorry for this copy past mistake.

Dave   August 8th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

This has nothing to do with the United States. I think that we can only hope this ends quick and tensions stay low.

Roman   August 8th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

2 Martina Ilstad:
The Georgia started the war. The Georgia ruined the Tskhinvali (South Ossetian capital). The Georgia had killed today russian UN peace keepers and civilians, women, children by tanks, rockets, bombs etc. Do you still want to help Georgia to make genocide in relation to the Ossetians people?!

Yuri   August 8th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

What"s a sticking lie was writes by CNN? Georgians killed 1500 civilians... and then Russian troops entered. Why CNN writes lies? Is this article – american sticking democracy... Russian defend peace and civilians.... CNN are Hypocrisy. ... Our people is died.
Saakashvilli is a Gitler.

Roman   August 8th, 2008 3:29 pm ET

2 Bob Donaghue:
There is nothing similar with Afganistan! Russia doesn't want to fight with Georgia!
Indeed, Its very similar with Kosovo (as South Ossetia), Georgia (as Yugoslavia) and Russia trying to stop genocide of Ossetian people (as EU).

Dave   August 8th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

Roman has it on the dot.

nomand(rus)   August 8th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

This is very silly, your television tells you lie, they talk about the entrance of Russian troops in the southern osetiyu, but they were silent last night that georgia FIRST began to bomb the capital osetii that they bombed schools, hospitals, attacked the post of Russian peacekeepers, killed 10 people, 30 injured, and Russia did not remain as to respond to this aggression, putting its army ...

DONT why you do not see obvious examples of georgia armed with a new NATO weapons, although vosvem recently they did not have anything, the president of Georgia did not want to sign a document on not using force, all this shows that georgia zarannee preparing for war, but what you communicate on your television and the Internet so deftly speculation information.

Sorry for my bad English

Denis Sidelnikov   August 8th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

Greetings from Russia! In advance I apologise for bad English – the program translated.
We not monsters.
The first blood not on us.
Our tanks have entered into South Ossetia (NOT To Georgia!!!) Only after the Georgian armies have completely destroyed three South Ossetia villages. The Georgian soldiers killed all: women and children.
Our tanks have entered into South Ossetia only after blows of the Georgian artillery and aircraft had been destroyed the most part of the South Ossetia capital. Was lost an order of 1500 civilians. My 1500 fellow citizens!
Our tanks have entered into South Ossetia only after the Georgian armies have opened fire on our peacemakers. 10 peacemakers were lost. What will you order to do in the present state of affairs? Can deduce peacemakers and allow to Georgians to destroy easy all the Ossetin? You suggest endure silently death our 10 peacemakers? My position is that that the world between South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Georgia will be only when Georgia will not have an army!
P.S. You have noticed as time has successfully been chosen? The Georgian armies were carried out by the treacherous attack just in Olympic Games opening day. The Olympic Games will be on the first pages of newspapers, but not the Georgian attack.

Arthur Filitov   August 8th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

I think we should be objective in this tricky situation. If Mr. Saakhashvilly proves that our military forces, navy or air forces attacked Georgian territorry, the traces of such acts of aggression should be officially proved by mass media, victims claims, mobile video etc. Russia has such video and can prove that the first who started this crap of war was Mr. Saakhashvilly...

Sharon from Indy   August 8th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

George W. Bush....stay out of this!

Rebecca, Shreveport, LA   August 8th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

I am currently a student of a Georgian-born professor and am greatly concerned for his country and family. The whole situation seems extremely volatile, as both Russia and Georgia are America's allies. My first reaction is to say that Russia must get out of Georgia, but what are we to do if the people there WANT to be part of Russia? I just hope that the situation does not further escalate.

Arthur Filitov   August 8th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

And one more idea to to think over – Russia as other civillized countries is totally devoted to the Olympics and a war scandal is the last thing my country wants to happen. Ther's no profit for us in this war conflict, but there's a one for Georgian government. Backed-up by the glorious United States Georgia wants a reunion with its de facto independent areas. The world community will be eager to support a small country under attack during the Olympic Games.

Rebecca, Shreveport, LA   August 8th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

I just wanted to add that I would probably feel concern if I knew someone who was Russian. I also wanted to say that in America, if it's not part of Western Europe, most of us are unlikely to know anything about the political climate across the globe, or in places like Georgia, Turkey, Armenia, etc. Our news does not focus on those parts of the world, so when a story like this breaks, many of us have no idea what has been going on over the past 20, 10, or even 5 years in those countries, and therefore often come to our own conclusions about what side is "right" and "wrong." Like I said before, I just hope that there can be a peaceful solution and that no one else, be it Russian or Georgian, military, or civilian, is killed or harmed.

Ashley h   August 8th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

Why did Russia invade Georgia? Why is this "war" going on?Where's the U.N when you need them?

Roman   August 8th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

2 Ashley h:
Because Georgian troops have killed 12 and wounded 150 russians UN peace keepers in which you are so need!
Because Georgias troops have killed about 1200 civilians.

Elena   August 8th, 2008 5:47 pm ET

WHY YYYY alll from Europe think we going to GEORGIA?????? ITS news WAR!!! GEORGIA about 2 YEAR suck from usa)) You want the third world war? I was not present! But now the USA do not have pretexts to enter into Russia! Here it the Pretext! Catch!

Elena   August 8th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

Hey YOU what u know about georgia and about russia and about ossetia? what u think about this history??? what u can wright about this? if u dont know nothingh??????? what u can??? NOTHING!!! RUSSIA VOREVER

Elena   August 8th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

FOR EVER

Don W.   August 8th, 2008 6:05 pm ET

I think it's ironic that the Condolezza Rice would condemn Russia's action when basically the Bush administration did the same thing in Iraq invading a soverign nation. I don't think she has any credibility in that respect!
Go figure!

Elena   August 8th, 2008 6:12 pm ET

DON u are right! but ossetia it not from georgeia and it from russia. but ossetia wanna be with russia)))

Elena   August 8th, 2008 6:18 pm ET

And in general I suggest to select at all the weapon and to distribute instead of it chocolate, can only after that it will be not terrible to live

Heather,CA,US   August 8th, 2008 6:28 pm ET

I read that it's about oil. Remember what Russia did to Lithuania during the winter? They shut off the oil pipeline to Lithuania. It's about oil. Russia is no democracy.

D.   August 8th, 2008 6:39 pm ET

I feel sorry for all victims where ever they are in this poor world and I blame it on bad politics, incompetent politicians, greed, ...

However, this conflict has its nasty history and it is similar in nature to another conflict (or conflicts, rather) that was threaten to spread all over Europe in '90...

I am amazed that no one is asking one key question – why is this happening now? Why now, after only few months of Kosovo's indipendence, in the hit of the presidential campaign in US, during the Olympics, ...

I hope 360 will at least try to answer that question tonight

Dan Cardiff   August 8th, 2008 7:00 pm ET

As an American I am embarrassed when Condolezza Rice or Dumb Dubya complain than someone has "invaded a soverign nation".
Such hypocrisy.

KJ   August 8th, 2008 7:54 pm ET

We were right to go into Iraq. However, I think we should stay out of Georgia. I do not understand why we are even thinking about getting involved. Or we? I admit, I am lost as to why we should be concerned by this turn of events? With everything else going on in the world, like Darfur and etc.

Don W.   August 8th, 2008 9:36 pm ET

KJ invading a soverign nation based on false and contrived pretenses resulting in the deaths of an estimated half million Iraqi civilians as well as the 4500+ of my fellow american soldiers for the express purpose of procuring their natural resources is certainly far from being right..

Annie Kate   August 8th, 2008 9:38 pm ET

Sounds like Russia's invasion of Hungary and Czechoslovakia during the Cold War – we didn't interfere militarily then so I hope we won't now.
