Barclay Palmer
AC360° Senior Producer
Good morning 360 friends!
Today, it’s all about the economy…of course…
President Bush talks energy and gas prices from the Rose Garden this morning, with his VP and Cabinet standing by him, prodding Congress to allow more offshore drilling, though experts debate whether that would cut gas prices anytime soon.
Congress is debating proposals to open up more drilling, as well as to crack down on speculators allegedly driving the energy market and the rest of us crazy. And it’s not yet clear whether it can pass a bill before going on vacation at the end of the week. Joe Johns is keeping them honest, reporting that story tonight.
Both presidential candidates are talking economic security.. John McCain starts the day speaking with workers at Wagner Equipment, a Colorado company focused on selling big Caterpillar equipment so crucial to the economy.
Barack Obama talks about economic security with Sen. Claire McCaskill at two town hall meetings in Missouri, before having a barbeque with 200+ supporters.
What do you think of their proposals?
Also tonight, Dana Bash’s travels with McCain’s woman on women — Carly Fiorina, a top McCain adviser and former CEO of Hewlett Packard — about her efforts to build stronger support among women, and to show her candidate is talking about issues that women care about. Is it working?
And then there’s the war. No, not that one.. but other war. U.S. losses in Afghanistan have spiked. Generals have asked for 10,000 more troops there, but that won’t happen while President Bush is still in office. Peter Bergen, who testified about it on the Hill this week, reports for us tonight.
Also, the US might have one of Al Qaeda’s top 10 leaders in an alleged attack on militants inside Pakistan this week. Under the nom de guerre al Masri, Peter reports this man of many names has led Qaeda’s biochem program. The attack marks a new aggressiveness with Pakistan..another sign of it: the NY Times today reports the CIA has confroned Pakistan with more evidence of links between its intelligence service and militants.
And back in the U.S., a flood of home video shows how shaken Californians were in yesterday’s 5.4 magnitude earthquake. Tonight, Ted Rowlands shows us some of that tape, plus animations of what the BIG ONE would look like, the earthquake of at least 7.0 that experts say is a near certainty in years to come.
We’d love to hear your thoughts about an of this and more. Thank you for joining us tonight at 10pm!

July 30th, 2008 8:35 am ET I’ve seen a lot of the videos from yesterdays quake in Ca. Those people must have been extremely scared when it occurred!! I’m just glad that it did minimal damage and that no one was killed. I have no problem with off shore drilling. We may not see results now but we need to start doing other things to help us down the line so that this fiasco doesn’t happen again. We need to search every avenue to help us ensure that we won’t have to rely on other countries for our gas or energies. And for those that say it won’t produce results fast enough…well neither will any other source that they are wanting to try out now. They all will take years to develop and be ready for our use. So we need to do them all. I hope that we can send more troops to Afghanistan to try and quell the spike in violence that has occurred there. This war has been too long forgotten…finally we are getting back to it! I just wish the media would do way more on it. When is 360 ever going to go back there!? Anderson has been saying forever that you all are going yet that hasn’t happened yet! WHY!!? Cindy…Ga. |

July 30th, 2008 8:57 am ET Good Morning, Barclay! It is also beyond me why the Congress is opposed to anything that might help the energy crisis. Of course, they are worried about their ’summer vacations’, which the taxpayers are probably paying for! Have a great day Barclay, Anderson, Erica, & all. (Thanks for posting Barclay!) |

July 30th, 2008 10:02 am ET Morning Anderson, I have to admit that I have not been watching your show, I work for a state-government agency that is helping clean up the mess that Dolly made in South Texas, and we are working very hard to help those folks get back into the swing of things. What a mess, Oh well it could have been worse. I am looking forward to your show tonight. |

July 30th, 2008 10:21 am ET Offshore drilling - bet Big Oil is chomping at the bit. Even Bush’s administration personnel have pointed out that offshore drilling will have absolutely no effect on the supply of oil immediately and in fact it will be 20 years before we see any results from it and then it will only save us 4 cents on whatever the cost of oil is then. For the same money and effort we could be developing renewable sources of energy to supply our energy needs instead of throwing our money down a hole in the water. The part about the top ten al Queda leader was confusing - did the US capture him, kill him, or find him or what? Afghanistan should have priority on troops - it was after all the primary target until Bush side tracked us into Iraq. If the attacks continue to escalate and we lose more military personnel I would hope that Congress or the President would send in the cavalry, so to speak. Annie Kate |

July 30th, 2008 10:25 am ET I do not know why the leadership in the house will not even allow a vote to be brought up on off shore drilling. Ever since President Bush lifted the ban on off shore drilling, prices have declined. In my area they are down .13 cents a gallon. With oil even perception becomes reality. The American people are in favor by 73 % of drilling. We are also smart enough to know that we need a comprehensive energy policy that includes nuclear, solar, wind and anything else that smart people can come up with. T. Boone Pickens even thinks that we should drill along with wind and natural gas exploration. I have mixed feelings about sending troops into Afghanistan without first addressing the Pakistan commitment in dealing with Al Qaeda Susan |

July 30th, 2008 11:58 am ET I truly can’t fathom a 7.0 earthquake or larger. Yesterday was my first experience with one after moving out here from AZ 12 years ago. There’s been very minor quakes during that time but nothing strong enough for me to have felt it. It was quite an odd sensation - as if someone was pushing against my chair when the jolt hit and then it turned into shaking back and forth. I ran under a doorway not knowing if the shaking would get stronger but luckily it subsided and no damage was done other than a lot of rattled nerves. I realized how unprepared I was for an earthquake and have started to put together an emergency backpack for my car. The idea of having canned food in my car is disturbing because of the heat during the summer. Any suggestions for alternate food not affected by the changes in temperature? I feel so bad for our soldiers in Afghanistan - talk about a forgotten war. When will we the people hold Bush and his administration for their actions and inactions? |

July 30th, 2008 11:59 am ET No matter what we eventually end up with for alternative energy, widespread use is decades away. Meanwhile oil will continue to be a major energy source. We need to drill wherever we think there is hope of finding oil, in parallel with developming new sources. I am perplexed by Obama’s failure to see this, as well as his opposition to nuclear. France gets 80% of it’s electricity from nuclear, while the US gets less than 20%. New designs are safe, and with reprocessing, the supply of uranium will last centuries. We can’t afford to rule anything out. |

July 30th, 2008 12:21 pm ET I really do wish oil wasn’t a political issue. I think using the corn we eat as fuel is costing us at the store. I think we need to realize we are competing with China and India for oil .China has billions of people we dont. If we can make the ipod , the computer, put people in space and land on the moon we can drill off shore responsibly. Im a Democrat but I could easily become an Indepent. If the Democrats and Rep wont work for us then people wont vote for them. |

July 30th, 2008 12:32 pm ET First of all, to address the issue as to whether McCain can appeal to women, let’s be honest. The Republicans have never been particularly concerned with women’s issues. A party that is anti-abortion and is committed to repealing Roe v Wade is not going to have much success appealing to women. McCain may try to get some of Hillary Clinton’s strong support from middle aged and older women, but I do not expect him to have much success. Until he and his party move into the 21st century and change their position regarding abortion, reasonable women will not vote for their party. As for the issue of offshore drilling, the simple fact is that this is a long term solution to an immediate and pressing problem. The working people of this country need immediate relief from soaring gas prices. Since my company relocated last year, I now have to commute over fifty miles a day roundtrip to work. I worry about having enough money for gas to get to work, as well as being able to pay for the higher cost of food, rent and everything else. So let’s get real here. The deregulation of business is a far bigger problem. This is why we have had scandals such as Enron and Tyco and now this insane increase in gas prices. The oil companies are reaping gigantic profits off the backs of the working people of this country. We can try to drive less, own cars that are as economic as possible, but a good part of this problem is out of our hands. There are no quick and easy solutions to the economic problems that have built up over eight years of the worst administration in our history. I think we need to invest in solar energy and create jobs in this new industry. We need to get out of Iraq and stop spending billions on this endless war and draining our economy. The news from Afghanistan is not good. This is where the real war on terror should be waged. Osama bin Laden is nowhere near Iraq. He is supposedly hiding somewhere near the Afghanistan/Pakistan border. John McCain doesn’t seem to be at all interested in fighting the real war on terror. It’s time to get out of Iraq and divert those resources to going after Al Qaeda where it lives. |

July 30th, 2008 12:39 pm ET As a lifelong California resident, I know that a 5.4 magnitude earthquake isn’t really a big deal. It’s not much more than something to talk about for a day and then forget about. Most Californians are aware that the “big one” could happen anytime, which is scary but also just a part of life. We don’t have brick buildings, must secure our bookcases to the wall, etc. It’s such a part of life that people really don’t worry about it. |

July 30th, 2008 12:45 pm ET Solar technology exists - big oil doesn’t want us to use it. |

July 30th, 2008 12:46 pm ET The need for off shore drilling and more nuclear energy are two big points that concern me about Obama. I like Obama but I will vote for McCain unless Obama comes around on energy. The far left with their no nukes and no off shore drilling helped put us in the precarious position we find ourselves in today. |

July 30th, 2008 2:38 pm ET Why on earth would anybody vote for John McCain? Obama is the only one that can remedy our nation’s problems. |

July 30th, 2008 3:48 pm ET Would you please tell your news people to stop telling people to get in a doorway during an earthquake. That is NOT what you are supposed to do and may cost you your life. Doorways will NOT protect you from falling depris or flying objects. The proper procedure is to get under a sturdy piece of furniture such as a desk or table. |

July 30th, 2008 5:17 pm ET to the other Jim- On Nuclear- Are You willing to have the waste from Nuclear shoved up your backside? I’m not & I’m Against Yucca Mountain- If Washington Wants it- See if Senator McCain is Willing to store the Waste Under His Home in Arizona or under Congresses feet on Capitol Hill. We need CLEAN energy Wind, Solar,Hydroelectric,Geothermal. As For Oil Drilling- The Oil Companies allready have a lot of leases They just need to use them They are not for one reason- MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY- They want the price up not down- I lived through the 70’s when we had a “Gas ” Shortage- whats been done since then? Not much WHY???? |

July 30th, 2008 11:01 pm ET Global warming, politics, the wars in the middle east, oil prices, ect so many problems,so little time, how do we solve them?It starts with a smart government, which you currently lack.Smart thinking politians, a country that bans together to stop the worlds disasters, until then, solving the worlds problems will be difficult. The energy crisis:we should stop ALL production of gas powered cars, change the production lines, and make only hybrids, and eco-friendly cars, use more wind power, solar power, ect.Politics:I think Obama should win hands down, you have bush right now in power,he isnt doing good things to the country ,he’s a republican, McCain, he’s a republican, you see the connection?I think Obama will help the country,McCain is jealous of Obama, you could see that from space!.The wars:until they can come home(make them come home now!)move some U.S troops in Iraq to Afghanistan that way the troops already there will have more backup, keep some troops in Iraq, just incase a problem comes up.Oil prices:i’m not sure about that problem. And then we come to yesterdays disaster in California, the 5.4 earthquake, if “the big one”comes California,NEEDS to better prepare themselves, now!!Come on America !These problems can be solved! |
