Hey Anderson, hope you had a great weekend.

Maureen T   July 7th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Good evening Anderson! Welcome back! Looking forward to the show tonight!

MaryBeth   July 7th, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Happy Monday everyone! Why does everyone need a makeover? First Michelle, then Obama, and now McCain.

Cindy   July 7th, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Hey Anderson. Hope everyone had a great 4th!

I was glad to finally hear from the hostages.

Cindy...Ga.

Sarah Atlanta, GA   July 7th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Hi Anderson!!! I am looking forward to hearing what the former hostages have to say

david gergen   July 7th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Hello everyone - Would welcome your views on the changes underway with both McCain and Obama campaigns. More in a few minutes.

Kimether - Atlanta, GA   July 7th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Politics are crazy! McCain says Obama will raise taxes, Obama says he's giving ample tax cuts. Both say the middle class is the #1 priority. Both say the other is wrong. Both say your choice for President will be starkly clear. Somebody is fibbin!

Kyle from NE   July 7th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Good evening I hope everyone had a safe and wonderful 4th. I am really looking forward to the report about the atheist soldier. As someone who has served in the Armed Forces of this country, these reports/stories always grab my attention.

EJ (USA)   July 7th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Hi David Gergen, what did you do over the weekend?

Katina   July 7th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Happy Monday after a long weekend! Maybe it's just what I see in these clips, but McCain is looking very stiff, even with the scripts gone.

Hannah Storm   July 7th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Hey david can't wait to hear what you have to say on the topic

Norma   July 7th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

McCain has mojo? Hmmm ...he just puts me to sleep.

Shannon   July 7th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

How can John McCain say Obama is going to raise everyone's taxes when he is only talking about raising 5% of the public's those making over 250,000. It seems he risks seeming disingenous

Kimether - Atlanta, GA   July 7th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Hi Mr. Gergen!
McCain was in desperate need of changes and thus far, it appears the changes made have been helpful for him. He is in desperate need practice though, and alot of it, preferably in front of a mirror.

Cynthia   July 7th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

It is my understanding that if you make over $200,000 your tax rate will increase, but if you make under 50,000 you will get a tax cut of about a $1000.

kathy   July 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

i really dont care what changes are made with obama and mccain. i am voting mccain in nov. and now all the political news seems so boring,

Shannon   July 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Those that think Obama is moving a lot to the center, never listened to him in the primaries or read his books. I don't understand why no one is reporting his positions accurately

CaseyJPS   July 7th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

95% of taxpayers (lower and middle class) would be benefitting under Obama's economic policies. Thos making more than $250,000/yr would pay more.

Kurt   July 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Your show is excellent. I was waching that other show, but I had to get away from the celebrity gossip news. I went to your show, and you are talking real news. Thanks

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   July 7th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

I suspect there will be a lot of changes in both camps, for at least a few months.

Lisa in Miami   July 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

I plan on taking McCain's advice and voting for Obama!

Larry   July 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Who did Obama beat in the 'landslide victory' in Illinois?

Is the only shout out from the dems that McCain is just a 3rd Bush term? Do they have nothing else to say? Can the dems find nothing positive in McCain? Can the Reps find nothing positive in Obama?

The next 4 years can't fly by fast enough:)

Tiffany (San Diego)   July 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Kimether,

I like that word "fibbin"

Tracey - Boston   July 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

I don't think Obama back-tracked on Iraq... i's just common sense.

Claire in Birmingham, AL   July 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Okay, seriously. What's so wrong with 'going to the center'? Wouldn't a candidate *want* to try and pull support from the majority of the population? The majority of the people are moderates and those of the 'center'...so much so that they feel alienated when the candidates are so far left- and right-wing oriented. I think its fantastic that Obama is trying to reach out to the masses.

Robin   July 7th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

John McCain may be having a "makeover", but the video doesn't lie.
He still looks like a very old man - someone too old to lead the country in these perilous times.

Joe   July 7th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

I love it! John McCain has charisma. He is smooth

Mike, Syracuse, NY   July 7th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

I don't see how Obama can pay for everything he is promising without raising middle class taxes.

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   July 7th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

I think Obama will shift to the center to win. What he'll do after, if he wins, will be unknown.

MaryBeth   July 7th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Why all this fuss about ppl changing their minds? If you learn new info and it effects what you thought before, you should be able to change your mind. We've had 8 years of an unchangeable mind...we need someone who can think on his feet and change with what develops.

Tracey - Boston   July 7th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Kurt,

Welcome to the real news program...Generation AC

Maureen T   July 7th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Barack is a very smart man and knows just what he needs to do to make his way to the White House! Keep your eye on the prize Barack!

Jolene   July 7th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Do we really blame the candidates for moving center? Perhaps they can get more swing votes by doing that.

Victoria   July 7th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

If we aren't sending billions to Iraq every month then maybe he can pay for everything he's promising.

MaryBeth   July 7th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Mike: with all the taxes from the wealthy that he's increasing. They will be paying LOADS more taxes than they are now.

Kaye, Pensacola & Chattanooga   July 7th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

How can McCain also promise what he is promising without raising taxes?

Mary H. St. Louis, MO   July 7th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

@ Mike in Syracuse. I agree 100%. When you hear him speak you think wow... he is going to solve every issue out there but does not seem to have much substance behind how he is going to solve the problems.

Shannon   July 7th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Obama did not back track on Iraq and has always stated the position that he will listen to the generals on the ground. McCain's team just said flip flop and the media believed them without checking out his clearly on the record position.

Mechelle-- Oklahoma   July 7th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

i just want a candidate to lay out his position and stick to it. i don't want to see them cater to one side or the other. i don't have a problem with adjustments in their positions, i just don't want those adjustments to be because one group feels "left out"

Cynthia   July 7th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

John McCain can't buy charisma and is definitely not smooth.

CaseyJPS   July 7th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

I will always wonder why John McCain (and others) put his life on the line to defent our constitutional rights and can't support equality for everyone. It makes absolutely no sense.

EJ (USA)   July 7th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Please let A-Rod know that I am available. He can forget about that Madonna chick.

Stacy   July 7th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Wait, you're fact checking the Madonna break up? Hahaha.

Lisa   July 7th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Sounds to me like McCain wants to try the ole "trickle down economics". The problem is that is never trickles down far enough. The Rich and the major companies always get the tax cuts.

Ed Martinez   July 7th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

At this point in the game, I've already decided I'm going to vote for Obama.
I probably won't change my mind.

Ed

Shannon   July 7th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

It is important to realize that Obama is running to be POTUS for everyone and not only those on the left. As a post-partisan candidate he is showing that he understands all perspectives.

Cindy   July 7th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

@ MaryBeth...if you think that Obama is just raising taxes on the wealthy then you are kidding yourself. We all will pay the price! The only difference is the wealthy can afford it.

Cindy...Ga.

MaryBeth   July 7th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Sorry..correction. He's not increasing taxes on the wealthy, he's taking away the Bush tax cuts.

Tracey - Boston   July 7th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Victoria:

very good point about all the money going to Iraq!!!!!!!!!!!

Tom   July 7th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

I think Obama having the speech in a stadium is a good idea. It will get people excited about voting. He’s making it more interesting so that a more diverse group of people embrace voting than just the typical people who usually vote.

CaseyJPS   July 7th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

I think Obama's abortion stance will work in his favor. Another news program reported significant (positive) changes in polling among women after his position was made clear.

Cynthia   July 7th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

Senator Obama said in one of his speeches that he would be as careful coming out as they were careless going into Iraq.

Megan Dresslar   July 7th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

Lorie Ann in Ca.
I agree with you too, I need Obama to win anytime!

John Michael   July 7th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

If you like the few dollars left in your pocket, get ready for only CHANGE with Obama.

Betty Ann, Nacogdoches,TX   July 7th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Hi everyone from Texas!
I believe that Obama will win and McCain will face an Obama~Nation!

Michele   July 7th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

I think that Obama is starting to move in a direction that will not shock his supporters should he become President. Each day there is a flip flop, is he just now starting to show what he is made of?
Wake up, there are more shifts to come.

Greg   July 7th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Niether can do anything without raising taxes, i just want to know that the wealthy are doing their part. At least Obama will make that happen

Shannon   July 7th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Obama has written books about faith based programs in government. This is not a shift in policy or position. This is who he is.

Mike, Syracuse, NY   July 7th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Kaye, McCain said he will freeze domestic spending for a year to allow revenues catch up to spending.

Tanay   July 7th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

I was wondering what the US has done after all these years to help free the hostages. The US knew they were taken captive, and they were held for 6 years, but I personally haven't heard any publicity on the hostages or what methods the US had to get them out. After all this, it was the French government who helped the Colombian military pull off this daring rescue.

CaseyJPS   July 7th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

It is perfectly normal for anyone to change his or her mind–especially if they have an open mind to open dialogue among all sides of the issues. We need a dynamic leader. The world changes day-to-day. It's ridiculous to want to vote for someone who will stick their head in the sand and not budge in their opinion–they need to flex with their constiituents (us)!

Kyle from NE   July 7th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

@ Mechelle Oklahoma, *clap* I agree 100%. No one likes to be left out but at the same time you can't make everyone happy. There are policies I don't like from either camp at this point, but I want to see if they modify these policies to be more inline with my personal view.

Byron   July 7th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

Sen. Obama is doing what any sensible person does. The more you are informed on issued the better your decision making comes. Sometimes you have to split an issue into more than just 2 parts (yes or no). A lot of issues today aren't cut and dry (in favor of or not). He has shown just because this is my believe doesn't mean it is all or nothing. Finding the middle ground is an essential ground for a leader looking to rebound this country in the correct direction here and overseas.

cindy m.   July 7th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

Hi David Gergen & Anderson,
The candidate prez issues are looking sooo good for Obama. McCain is McBush. We know all about McCain. We know his record and McCain's record isn't changing just because he now wants to be prez. He's OLD and his process is going to be OLD and worn out.

Jill 1   July 7th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

David Gergen, you rock! I always respect your opinion, even when I (very rarely) disagree. Thanks for your level-headed political opions.

Jan   July 7th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

If I make 10 million a year and the government takes 60% to pay for the things needed in this country, and to take care of our citizens and soldiers. That still leaves me 4 million a year, 11000.00 a day. I can live on that!

Kurt   July 7th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Yes, Jennifer, McCain must get in touch with American's, and he does. He needs to do more. . Obama has done that; he has been able to affect people that feel disenfranchised.

Dee Stevens   July 7th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Interesting debate tonight AC.

Lisa in Miami   July 7th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Anderson, you're right, McCain is awkward, but I don't want an awkward president that can't stay focused on topic, is old, stiff, and not articulate.

Amina TN   July 7th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

what is wrong with being a liberal? whats wrong with being the most liberal senator in the senate? he is not just moving to the center but he is really shifting to the right a bit. i for one will like to see two DIFFERENT candidates.

whats with the politcal makeovers? what ever happened to what you see is what you get. are people that desperat that thery are willing to put on a fake face inorder to get some votes...

Heather   July 7th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

I think that at this time, it would be a good idea for Obama to be close to the middle considering there are people out there who still want another Bush in office and others who want a total change. There has to be some happy median in the middle in order to get everyone to vote Obama in office.

Cindy   July 7th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

I think McCain needs to be himself and stop trying to please everyone. He is losing who he is.

Cindy..Ga.

Martin   July 7th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

How can McCain be a successful president if he cannot organize his own campaign!! This show the lack of leadership and discipline!!

Matt(Gainesville, FL)   July 7th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

Anderson, you are right! McCain is awkward when he reads his speeches. However I was at a town hall meeting during the primary, and when he focuses on 3 or 4 core issues and talks to the voters you can see the difference in the room! He needs to this X 10 now in the general election!

Ann E   July 7th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

And I completely agree with Anderson! McCain's campaign is working way too hard to make him seem like someone else, but compared to what Obama is able to do as the younger candidate, will it make any difference?

Shamar   July 7th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

Obama flip-flop? Please...Not allowing for evulotion of thought is the reason we ended up with an idiot in the White House for the past seven years. The media should stop trying to play I caught you and provide some serious depth of discussion to his positions.

Sahira   July 7th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

Hey Anderson,

This is my first time on the blog....Okay, Just Kidding!

I read the article too about McCain having difficulty reading the teleprompter, and to me it seemed as that is a good thing too.

CaseyJPS   July 7th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

I think McCain is dead in the water without a war to manager (and his ability to tout how good he would be at managing a war). Pardon me.. I mean an occupation, not a war.

Jolene   July 7th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

How can McCain compete with Obama when it comes to speeches? I agree...to try to change McCain to act younger and more energetic when he's at the podium will turn more people off than on. It will come off as staged and fake.

Lindsay   July 7th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

Who cares about A-Rod and his wife. Sad to see yet another marriage breakup but really.....

Vickie   July 7th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

On Tony's comment, I believe that as the campaign goes on , Obama might not gain new supporters, notice I didn't say lose supporters.

Katina   July 7th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

Maybe I haven't thought this through enough, but I would rather have a candidate who is more in the middle than one who sticks to one side. I feel that we have a president right now who is very stuck in his ideas and is unable to see other views, therefore does not adapt to new/different ideas. I'm afraid that if we have two candidates who are stuck in their ways, we might end up with another unpopular president.

MaryBeth   July 7th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

This hostage recovery is just amazing. It was a big risk, so many things could have gone wrong. But the end result is definately worth it. Kudos to the Colombian president and military for a stunning operation that will go down in history.

connie stromer   July 7th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

I thought the purpose of an election was to let the voters understand what the people running for office stand for. It seems from tonights program that the whole deal is to pretend to stand for whatever someone tells the candidate the "people" want to hear. I'm very disappointed.

spencer   July 7th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

I do not understand all of the scrutiny of Obama for altering his positions when John Mc Cain Does 180s without anyone commenting

CaseyJPS   July 7th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

Shamar>
"The media should stop trying to play I caught you and provide some serious depth of discussion to his positions."

Absolutely right!!!

Betty Ann, Nacogdoches,TX   July 7th, 2008 10:24 pm ET

Ahh, let Obama flip~flop. He will learn and do the right thing in the end. His heart is in the right place`

Kevin Carr   July 7th, 2008 10:24 pm ET

Amen Shamar. In my opionion same for McCain's change on drilling for oil and tax cuts. Clearly an evolution in though based on previous beliefs.

Can't have a panel discussion without trumped up discrepancy tho.

David, Indiana   July 7th, 2008 10:24 pm ET

I agree with David Gergen, Sen Obama has to go for the center, not run so much as a liberal. Also, he needs to pick up centrist Sen. Clinton supporters. McCain does well when he's actually facing off against Obama. That's when the campaign moves forward. It's hard to get through the media thicket.

MaryBeth   July 7th, 2008 10:24 pm ET

Jan: I could too!!! $4M would be quite enough to live on.

Megan Dresslar   July 7th, 2008 10:24 pm ET

Hi Randi Kaye!
Nice see to you tonight! hope you have good weekend!

Robin   July 7th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

We have a difficult choice here. I am not excited about either of the candidates. McCain is too old; Obama is too young. I realize this statement sounds simplistic, but it reflects my view and the views of many others. We must consider the positions of the parties. The Republicans have proved a disaster over the last eight years; it's time to give the Democrats a chance.

Ann E   July 7th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

Does anyone else think that the thing with the nose of the airplane is just plain weird? How did that happen????

Jo Anne Cummings   July 7th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

I think letting McCain be "a regular guy" may not be enough in these times. We need a definite course of action, although I am not sure Obama can deliver either.....what a scary choice!!!!!

Jose   July 7th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

I like Senator McCain. He doesn't flip flop on issues and he will be a President for all the people not just the liberal wing of the democratic party.

Jacqui Chan   July 7th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

Okay Anderson, I was in the other room when you went to break and it sounded like you said "Madonna".
I am hoping I am wrong, if there is anything more pathetic than celebrity gossip it's Madonna drama
please say it ain't so

Phil Marcus   July 7th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

When you smile sweetly at a client (or an interview guest if you are on TV) who is acting like a jerk, are you being a hypocrite or flip flopper. Or are you doing what your job requires you do to keep it?

Obama and McCain are trying out for a job and are both shifting their feet a bit to accommodate the client, the American people. They should be, because being president is mostly leading in the direction the led want to go. So let us cut them both some slack, even if we are on the hard left or hard right, and don't like it. Because we will like it if our guy wins.

Greg S. in Chicago   July 7th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

It disgusts me that Tony Perkins and crew are going to go down the same path they did the last two elections – painting the Democrat as an abortion-loving candidate. Unfortunately, it worked the last two times, and you see what we got. If people fall for it again, I'll have no sympathy for their cries about how bad off we are as a nation.

Cynthia   July 7th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

I agree Spencer, McCain has flip flopped so much until I'm not sure where he stands on the issues. It also bothers me that he keeps talking about the gas tax holiday when economists have said that it is not a good idea and probably would be passed on to the consumer on the other end

Betty Ann, Nacogdoches,TX   July 7th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

Randi Kaye always has good juicy info~

Shannon   July 7th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

Look at the successful and well organized campaign that Obama is running and then look at McCain's operation. I think it is easy to see which candidate has the organizational skills necessary to execute strategy.

Tiffany   July 7th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

I think people need to just accept that a big change is coming an instead of being afraid of it, just embrace it. The world had to change at some point in order for us to get this far.

Ron In Texas.   July 7th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

Hi David.
Why is Obama Grand Standing / Show Boating in Denver?. He will say or do anything just to win. Hold on folks we will all be wearing a straw hat at Christmas.

Brad Wood   July 7th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

McCain= Old, tired and worn out

Obama= Charasmatic, experienced and an agent of change

Jolene   July 7th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

@Ann E: I heard that it was caused by a bird. Must have been one big bird!

Sara.Ro   July 7th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

Regarding abortion , Obama should give strong solutions for every women , in any case.

Gina - Missouri   July 7th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

When will we see a debate between McCain and Obama?

Genevieve M, TX   July 7th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

The "Beat 360" pic tonight is frightening!

Mike, Syracuse, NY   July 7th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

Obama is naturally from the left and needs to artificially move to the middle to win in Nov. McCain is naturally in the middle and had to move to the left to get nominated. Now he can return to his natural state.

Megan Dresslar   July 7th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

This afternoon, I saw on CNN on tv, I cheered them and exciting to see them news conference today, I saw so proud of them, I felt so relax to see reunion with their family today! That is so awesome! Yipeeee!

Cindy   July 7th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

It was great hearing from the hostages today. They seem in great spirits and look healthy. Hope to hear more one on one with them.

Cindy...Ga.

Betty Ann, Nacogdoches,TX   July 7th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

Obama has solutions for change;-)

MaryBeth   July 7th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

This video is amazing!!!

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   July 7th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

The hostages have so much information to give. I hope it can help the others still held.

Kimether - Atlanta, GA   July 7th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

I am astonished by the hostage video. i watched it earlier and even teared up. I am so happy they have been rescued but something must be done. We are in Iraq, but what makes the situation there any worse than what's going on in Colombia, Darfur, Zimbabwe, or Sudan? People are being kidnapped, killed and robbed of their freedom.

Ann E   July 7th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

This video from Colombia is insane!!!!!!! I can't even imagine what they went through and then the pure joy on their faces when they found out they were free... it's amazing.

Mechelle-- Oklahoma   July 7th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

have we heard anything about the other hostages?

Joy in NY   July 7th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

I heard that theres over 100 more hostages being held by the farc or such organisations in colombia, wow this rescue is like a drop in a tea cup

Lisa in Miami   July 7th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

Amazing story from Colombia – right out of a movie.

Heather   July 7th, 2008 10:32 pm ET

That helicopter that picked up the hostages was a humanitarian effort. They rescued fifteen people from hell. It is sad because the documentary this weekend said that kidnappings are a regular event that happened everyday and it happens so much that they have set up a radio station that families can send messages to their loved ones who were kidnapped by the FARC. At least five people are kidnapped a day by them.

Tracey - Boston   July 7th, 2008 10:32 pm ET

I can't fathom any of this

Vickie   July 7th, 2008 10:32 pm ET

I have to ask how a person can be kidnapped and kept alive for ten or six years. What was the purpose for this lenght of time and what was the goal or aim for the rebels. Anderson, you are so right that people are being forgotten. I feel for the prisoners that are still in captive.

Saera El Paso, TX   July 7th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

that is absolutely amazing and wonderful footage
but all those other people.... still there
it's horrible

Casey Jones, Palm Springs, CA   July 7th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

Quite frankly, realtive to how Marc Gonsalves is descriibing captivity, I'd rather be dead.

Betty Ann, Nacogdoches,TX   July 7th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

The hostage story is a miracle with a storybook ending! :-D

Shannon   July 7th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

I can't imagine how the freed hostages must feel. It is amazing story

Anderson Cooper
CNN
  July 7th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

good evening everyone.. hope you had a great holiday weekend. sorry for being so late. .

i find that video on the chopper so moving... i cant imagine what it must have felt like for them to hear the words.. .your free.

Cynthia   July 7th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

I can't imagine going through what they have been subjected to. I'm glad that they are home & safe.

Betty Ann, Nacogdoches,TX   July 7th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

The men who put their lives at risk to save these hostages are true heros!!!
XXOO

Betty Ann, Nacogdoches,TX   July 7th, 2008 10:36 pm ET

Better late than never Anderson!
Hey and welcome!

Jolene   July 7th, 2008 10:36 pm ET

I hope the hostages write a book or tell their stories. The world needs to hear their experiences and what terrorists FARC are.

Maureen T   July 7th, 2008 10:38 pm ET

I can't believe Madge is a homewrecker!! Let's leave them all alone and not forget about the children, the innocent ones! Remember??

Minou, New York City   July 7th, 2008 10:38 pm ET

Sad times, when a celebrity divorce gets so much air time on CNN.

EJ (USA)   July 7th, 2008 10:38 pm ET

Was Ingrid the only female hostage? I think she was among the 15 but what about among the other hostages?

Matt(Gainesville, FL)   July 7th, 2008 10:38 pm ET

Hmmm I guess Madonna's new album isn't selling that well. She needs some scandal to spark some interest.

Megan Dresslar   July 7th, 2008 10:38 pm ET

Hi Anderson,
I agree! That is so amazing to see them! They rescued the hostages! Yeah, Me too, I can't image to see amazing see video in the chopper!

Teresa, Oh   July 7th, 2008 10:38 pm ET

We shouldnt really be surprised at these divorces... they're no different from almost all the other ones.... Sad for all involved.

Ann E   July 7th, 2008 10:39 pm ET

It's like the show read my mind. I was just thinking "what is Kabbalah?"

Kimether - Atlanta, GA   July 7th, 2008 10:39 pm ET

All this mess with A. Rod and Brinkley is ridiculous. My 1st wedding anniversary was yesterday. I hate when I see marriage being abused and taken for granted.

David, Indiana   July 7th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

Good point Anderson that brings home the story. "Home free" yes that sounds good. Hi Anderson, David Gergen, Randi Kaye, fellow bloggers, by the way.

Jolene   July 7th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

This scandal will hurt A-Rod? All this publicity can't possibly hurt him.

Cynthia   July 7th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

Less judgemental – we all need a little bit of that.

Heather   July 7th, 2008 10:41 pm ET

You can tell that Madonna embraces Kabbalah as her religion, whereas Hollywood embraces it as a fad.

Genevieve M, TX   July 7th, 2008 10:41 pm ET

I always wonder why people who continue to act as if they are still a "bachelor/bachelorette" after they get married even bother getting married? Would'nt it be easier for those people to just stay unmarried? My parents taught me that marriage is teamwork and that there is no "I" in team.

Larry Horse   July 7th, 2008 10:41 pm ET

does anyone else think this is a madonna PR stunt?

every t ime she has some sort of concert tour or something coming up, she gets invovled with an athlete, jose canseco, dennis rodman etc

MaryBeth   July 7th, 2008 10:41 pm ET

Congrats, Kimether!!! Some good news in all this badness.

Tiffany (San Diego)   July 7th, 2008 10:41 pm ET

Anderson, you are always late. But its okay we still love you.

Jolene   July 7th, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Kabbalah and Scientology.....both belief systems are mysterious to me.

Anderson Cooper
CNN
  July 7th, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Kimether.. happy anniversary!

Michelle, Spring Valley,CA   July 7th, 2008 10:42 pm ET

I hate it when the kiddos are hardly even brought up... they have to live with this even when the press and public forget about it.

Kimether - Atlanta, GA   July 7th, 2008 10:42 pm ET

From the name, I can tell Hurricane Bertha is gonna be nothin to mess with!

Kendra Crewe   July 7th, 2008 10:42 pm ET

In this year's presidential race, I strongly like neither of the candidates, finding myself being torn from being a republican or democrat. Imagine how lovely our country would be if the two parties combined their ideas.

Matt(Gainesville, FL)   July 7th, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Ha ha... Ann me too... Anderson is that good... however I hope they don't start charging us $3.99 a minute for reading our minds!

Kimether - Atlanta, GA   July 7th, 2008 10:43 pm ET

Thanks Anderson! You've totally just made my day. My husband thanks you too :)

jim dieter   July 7th, 2008 10:43 pm ET

Anderson,
Have a good show
My first time blogging.

Shannon   July 7th, 2008 10:43 pm ET

I don't understand why Brinkley wants this public. It is really strange to want to subject your children to their parents mess.

Teresa, Oh   July 7th, 2008 10:43 pm ET

@Kimether: congrats on your first anniversary! May you succeed where 50% of us failed.

Norma   July 7th, 2008 10:43 pm ET

I wonder if in a few days we will be called the hurricane BIG BERTHA.

MaryBeth   July 7th, 2008 10:43 pm ET

Madonna has been practicing Kabbalah for many years, before anyone else knew what it was. The idea that Kabbalah lured A-Rod away from his wife is ridiculous. He cheated on her. What's she supposed to do? Accept it?

Jacqueline   July 7th, 2008 10:44 pm ET

I wouldn't know how to react if I were one of the hostages that were freed. I mean, after five years of captivity, I'm not sure if I'd believe it.

david gergen   July 7th, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Hello every– Thanks for all the messages you are posting; they make for great reading.

On candidates, really glad that both are turning more seriously to the economy because many Americans going thru wrenching changes now and the Bush administration is practically AWOL. The stimulus package hasn't stopped the slide, housing prices are still sinking, and experts are talking about the possibility of $6 a gallon for gas before the end of the year.

Even as the candidates give their speeches, however, they still haven't shown us whether their numbers add up and how they are going to pay for massive tax cuts (McCain) or massive new spending (Obama). Promises are great - but I would like to see their budgets.

In the meantime, I hope you had a great 4th - and we can all celebrate what appears to be an heroic rescue in Colombia.

Megan Dresslar   July 7th, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Wow! hurricane Bertha is on the way to ( islands) Atlantic ocean first time season! That will be so scary!

Gina - Missouri   July 7th, 2008 10:45 pm ET

If Bertha is the 1st named storm, what happened to the "A" named storm?

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   July 7th, 2008 10:45 pm ET

Kendra, I agree. I just would love to have a government that worked together regardless of any party lines.

Heather   July 7th, 2008 10:45 pm ET

Hopefully this hurricane doesnt get any bigger and stays away from the U.S.

Katina   July 7th, 2008 10:45 pm ET

With all the fires, tornados, flooding (I'm in Indiana, surrounded by flooded counties), I forgot about hurricane season. I hope that the hurricanes will take pity on the US this year and not cause too much trouble.

Mechelle-- Oklahoma   July 7th, 2008 10:46 pm ET

i forgot, but when is hurricane season?

Maureen T   July 7th, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Let's hope Bertha is not big and bad!

Ann E   July 7th, 2008 10:46 pm ET

@ Kendra

That would be interesting.... and I agree, I'm having the same problem. Although I'm not able to vote, I like to think that the nation I live in will be led by someone I support.

And let's all cross our fingers that Bertha doesn't decide to hit the coast!! (it doesn't look like it will, but you never know...)

Megan Dresslar   July 7th, 2008 10:47 pm ET

Happy Anniversary! Kimether......
hope you have good time! Congrats!

Casey Jones, Palm Springs, CA   July 7th, 2008 10:47 pm ET

WHOA! Cholesterol drugs for kids? What's next? We really are a pill-popping society. Is this really a good thing to teach kids? Just take a pill and everything will be OK? YIKES!!

Anderson Cooper
CNN
  July 7th, 2008 10:48 pm ET

I know im skeptical of this whole divorce story... seems like a lot of rumor and innuendo and people with agendas.

And i agree the idea that she lured him with Kabbalah just sounds ridiculous.

Olivia, Oceanside, CA   July 7th, 2008 10:48 pm ET

Hi Anderson,
I'm a huge fan of you and your show! Thanks for the sacrifices you make everyday to bring us the news. Also my first time blogging! Great show tonight!

Minou, New York City   July 7th, 2008 10:48 pm ET

All drugs have side effects. Cholesterol lowering drugs are liver damaging! (thus the commercials always say: do not use if you have a liver problem)
Putting children on drugs is insane! Feed them organic foods and learn about nutrition and try home remedies first before you pump them and yourself full with drugs.

Kimether - Atlanta, GA   July 7th, 2008 10:48 pm ET

Thanks Teresa!

I honestly can't blame the man in Cali for trying to save his home. Firefighters at this point are fighting what seems to be a losing battle. They must be absolutely exhausted.

Sharmel   July 7th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Anderson.. you did a great job this weekend. You are working all the time, and the effort is showing up in your work...

My heart goes out to the former hostages.. I saw most of the press conference this afternoon. And when Mr. Gonsalves spoke -especially- the pain was so apparent in his eyes. I hope they all get the time to heal that is needed.

Anderson Cooper
CNN
  July 7th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Gina.. its the first hurricane.. its not the first named storm.

jim dieter   July 7th, 2008 10:50 pm ET

Remember Arod is a baseball player not a saint. I think its there own business and lets move on.

Cindy   July 7th, 2008 10:50 pm ET

The Curtis brothers should be arrested! The fire they started could have gotten out of control and caused more work for the firefighters.

Cindy...Ga.

Tricia S-Pittsburgh   July 7th, 2008 10:51 pm ET

Hi Anderson!
I'm offically converted...no more Greta, only you at 10am.
Thanks for all the great reporting, keep it up :)

CaseyJPS   July 7th, 2008 10:51 pm ET

These guys not only saved their home and a village, they saved the government major bucks (and possibly endagerment of firefighter lives). To Mike Dietrich...but nothing wrong happened, so stop making up scenarios and just say THANK YOU!

EJ (USA)   July 7th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

Gina.. its the first hurricane.. its not the first named storm.

Anderson beat me to it!

Stacy   July 7th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

David Gergen, I completely agree. We need a lot more substance in this campaign . . .from everyone.

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   July 7th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

We here in Santa Barbara area are holding our breath. We expect hot temps and that's not what the Gap fire needs. The smoke is bad and people are on edge on what the rest of the week will bring.

Michelle, Spring Valley,CA   July 7th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

I think they were incredibly lucky with that backfire! What if it they weren't?

Heather   July 7th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

I appluad these brothers for protecting their home like they did. They saved their home and a few others. The one brother was a fireman so he knew exactly what to do and it worked.

Kevin Carr   July 7th, 2008 10:53 pm ET

Hope the brother gets off the arrest.

Vickie   July 7th, 2008 10:53 pm ET

Lesson here Don't start your own back fire. I understand why they did it and I'm glad that it went well but look at the officials position. What if someone got hurt.

Mechelle-- Oklahoma   July 7th, 2008 10:54 pm ET

what is this world coming to with "Beer Pong' and putting children on cholesterol drugs?!

Helen in Minneapolis   July 7th, 2008 10:54 pm ET

Hello Anderson,
this is my first blogging here with you during "360" – very good show tonight.

Shea, North Carolina   July 7th, 2008 10:55 pm ET

I think if C-Rod really wanted to make it work she could have forgiven him and moved on with their lives. Easier said than done I know but it can happen.

MaryBeth   July 7th, 2008 10:55 pm ET

What was the first named storm then? I don't remember hearing about one.

mollie   July 7th, 2008 10:55 pm ET

i think 8 is a little young for cholesterol med.
though when i was 13 i was diagnosed with high blood pressure and took medicine for a year. i exercise now and i'm fine.
i say just stop feeding your kids junk food and get them outdoors and you shouldn't need medicine.

Kay   July 7th, 2008 10:56 pm ET

Mr. Gergen, I cannot tell you how pleased I am that you comment here. I know you teach classes at Harvard Kennedy School, but because I'll never be able to take it, getting a little taste of what you know on the news as well as from your books, and now your blog comments- well, it's simply got me giddy!
Maybe one day you could podcast your lectures? Just a thought!

CaseyJPS   July 7th, 2008 10:56 pm ET

Michell, Spring Valley, CA>Let's THANK the brothers for their courage and using their heads. They knew what they were doing. You could argue the same points even if firefighters had lit the backfire. There are no guarantees.

Kyle from NE   July 7th, 2008 10:56 pm ET

@Heather – I won't go so far as to say they should be awarded anything. They took a calculated risk and it paid off. Like one of the other commentors said, it could have gone wrong and caused more work for the fireman.

Erica   July 7th, 2008 10:56 pm ET

There's a great little Australian movie titled "Danny Deckchair" where a guy flies off after tying balloons to a lawn chair.

Kelli, SF   July 7th, 2008 10:56 pm ET

As the wife of a CalFire Fighter, the Curtis brothers just wasted valuable time and resources that could have been used elsewhere. They need to be held accountable by paying for all the time and energy that the state spent making sure their "protecting" had a positive outcome.

Ann E   July 7th, 2008 10:56 pm ET

I agree mollie... how can meds like that be good for such a young person in the long run?

Maureen T   July 7th, 2008 10:56 pm ET

Great show Andy! Just what I needed for Monday night! Until tomorrow.

Minou, New York City   July 7th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

I WANT to try this at home!

Cynthia   July 7th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Some people will try anything. 9 hrs. & using a bb gun to shoot it down.

Kimether - Atlanta, GA   July 7th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Okay, was that really a dude, a bunch of balloons, and a lawn chair??? What a way to end the show, Anderson! We need the silly ending note to balance the scales of all the disturbing national news. Thank you for a great show, and great blog!
Hmmm, i wonder if I can save gas by taking a lawn chair and balloons to work?

Genevieve M, TX   July 7th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Re: The Shot

If the guy did that in Texas, he would be labelled as "redneck".

Sara, Oklahoma   July 7th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

They were talking about the balloon riders on the Bob and Tom show this morning. Haha.

Sahira   July 7th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

I think his wife is right, this guy is really crazy!

Lindy   July 7th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Hi David! You're right – seeing the numbers from both of the candidates would give the American voters a better idea of how their economic policies would work.

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   July 7th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Up, Up and away..In a lawn chair and armed with a gun. Only in America..Night all Good Monday evening.

Megan Dresslar   July 7th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Whoa! many balloon up up up in the sky on the lawn, That scary for me! and I love the shot! LOL! I agree with his wife!
Good night Anderson, Randi, Best bloggers!
Have a good night!!! Sleep tight!!!!! :)
See you tomorrow night!!!!!!

mollie   July 7th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

marybeth, it was a tropical storm that i believe hit somewhere in central america

Vickie   July 7th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

goodnite all, good show. No lawn chair flight here. nite.

Jacqui Chan   July 7th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

drug companies need to have some morals
maybe a good idea occasionally but I am sure like everything else they get carried away, the $ 1st
GOOD NIGHT ALL!

Good night everyone! I enjoyed the blog tonight!! See you guys at the same time tomorrow!

Night Anderson and all.

That man was crazy hooking balloons to a couch and flying!

Cindy...Ga.

CaseyJPS   July 7th, 2008 10:58 pm ET

Powering-up my lawn chair right now. Hopefully I'll see you on Tuesday 360ers! Thanks, 360. I enjoyed the show tonight. Up, up and away...

good night everyone

Sahira   July 7th, 2008 10:58 pm ET

Anderson great show tonight. Good night!!
See ya tomorrow!

Brandon Holmes   July 7th, 2008 10:58 pm ET

Yes, it might be young, but 8 is also a little young to be diagnosed as morbidly obese, and children of that age group are every day.

Shea, North Carolina   July 7th, 2008 10:58 pm ET

I have never heard of small kids having to take meds for high cholesterol....at the age of 7 and 8? Sounds weird to me.

EJ (USA)   July 7th, 2008 10:58 pm ET

Another great show Anderson. Keep us updated on the hostages – even in a few months from now to see how they are doing. Goodnight!

Jeff Stern   July 7th, 2008 10:59 pm ET

david gergen........... great point on the budget! Why not ask both to produce one at the convention?

Cynthia   July 7th, 2008 10:59 pm ET

Enjoyed blogging tonight. See you all tomorrow

Kimether - Atlanta, GA   July 7th, 2008 11:00 pm ET

Good night everyone! Always a pleasure! Thank you for enlightening me.
