The hunt for a "spree" murderer

This is not what people are used to seeing here. Rock Falls, IL is a small town and most people have been here their entire lives.

Neighbors here, on a street of small homes and families, are stunned at what happened inside an apartment on their block. They watch as investigators pull evidence bags from the apartment where four people, including a small boy, were brutally murdered.

Outside as reporters gather to report news of the manhunt, neighbors gather to express anger about what happened here. They are upset that the man wanted by police, Nicholas Sheley is still on the run.

One man who doesn't want to share his name says he knew not only the suspect, but the victims, too. He tells me he was partying just a few weeks ago with the people who lived in that same apartment.

"He knew at least one of these guys since high school!" the neighbor said, "Why the young kid? What did he do?"

Finally, word that Sheley had been caught close by in Granite, City, IL, just outside St. Louis.

"Thank God!" says one neighbor, a bar owner who adds he'd had run-ins with Sheley. "We don't need him coming back here!"

Now, neighbors say, they just want the publicity about their small town to fade away. But there's still the murder trial ahead.

I am glad that they caught Sheley. From the looks of his photo he looks like he is one that has a chip on his shoulder. If they wouldn't have gotten him there is no telling how many more he would have killed.

You can never make sense of why someone would kill so many innocent people. Other than the fact that the guy was just unhinged and has no compassion for anyone. People like that you just can't help.

I'm sure everyone in that town is breathing easier knowing this man has been caught and is behind bars. Its hard to understand why anyone would murder innocent people so brutally – its even harder to understand when one of the victims is a child. I'm hoping the police dot all the i's and cross all the t's in this case so it can be prosecuted successfully. People like this don't need to be out on the streets.
