Anderson's View: Competing to win

Anderson Cooper

Thank You.

I just wanted to take a moment and thank all of you who watch our broadcast for helping us win against our competition again this quarter. It’s the second quarter in a row we’ve won in the most important demographic, and it is all because of you. We’ve focused a lot on politics these past six months, and our viewers have responded. It’s great to win, but it’s even better to win reporting on things that are important. So, thank you, and I promise we will continue to work hard to bring you in depth coverage of the day's most important stories.

I know it’s popular to attack one’s competition in cable news. Some people seem to spend as much time trashing their rivals as they do reporting the news. I understand why they do it, I get it, but I don’t want to take part in it, and I respect the fact that my competition on FOX, Greta Van Susteren has chosen not to do that as well. She has her program, I have mine. They are very different, but I respect her hard work and intelligence. I think the competition between us makes both our broadcasts better.

I am glad that AC360 stays on top of the important issues facing the US today such as:

    1. The importance of lapel flag pins.
    2. The imput of Jesus into the election.
    3. Which candidate is the most patriotic.
    4. Cindy McCain's cookies.
    6. Is Obama more white or black?
    7. McCain's military record- 6 wars ago.

What else can you come up with?- I can hardly wait. Lets see: maybe Obama not putting his hand on his heart when they play the song.

Things like this are IMPORTANT to CNN executives watching ratings but not to any viewer who has a high school diploma or more.

Glad you don't bore the viewers with "downer" issues like the wars, mortgages, the dollar, jobs, energy, the stock market dropping through the floor or GM and Citibank on the brink of bankruptcy along with dozens of other US companies.

Get serious in this election year or get off the air and stop worrying about the ratings war with Fox which nobody takes seriously.

    Anderson,
    I watch your program from 10:00p.m. – 11 p.m. P.S.T. nightly
Only have one complaint- I want to watch NEWS & find out what is going on -NOT COMERCIALS. I'm not buying the products .

Greta's show is really dull. How many times do we need to hear about Anna Nicole and Natalie Hollaway?

What would happen if you had actual competition? ;-)

    Anderson,
Hi! Congratulations–I was just reading several ratings reports before I saw your blog-writing this afternoon. You have an excellent program, and your political coverage over the past months has been very thorough, in depth and always interesting. I'm glad you get the recognition you deserve.

Now, if only CNN can stay with the NEWS and discard the 'Entertainment', 'Sports', "Cutesy stuff", and other such drivel!! More investigation at the local, state and federal levels with longer story lines!!

You and your staff do such an awesome job every night, why wouldn't we watch?

Maybe Greta still has a special place in her heart for CNN... Regardless, it's nice to see two shows duking it out in a classy way, and actually focused on the news instead of saying anything to beat each other in ratings.

    Anderson,

Hmmm , I'll try not to sound rude, here goes as far as political coverage and presentaion of both sides ,your competition tends to have less personal involvement in reporting the news, I can break down the commentary , the wording of a political topic/candidate and they have more objective and constructive reporting overall, this is the case with most of the reporters , Greta (who pays much attention to reporting and solving crime/ violence) I appreciate their focus on that , Hannity, O'reilly, and other conservative reporters go beyond the headline and give in depth investigation, analysis and offer by way of debate opposing opinion , they are clear about having both sides presented. CNN , example Roland Martin , Soledad Obrian go on and on in almost at times gushing mindless chatter and for Obama, the positive remarks , commentary is heavy and leans towards a very positive and sometimes PR stint type of reporting , YOu often also appear to offer questions and remarks about Obama in a very non offensive , not to critisize tone , when it comes to the other candidates , its plain and clear more critical , more aggresive and negative , Hillary was reported in a very negative and with very little respect far more than Obama , obvious liberals want him nominated at whatever cost, journalistic integrity aside, Cnn does do in depth presentation and political analysis however it's mostly one sided, I do of couse like your compassion , humor and witty side, your PIP series is important , your love of my favorite Gorillas is apparent, and your integrity I know is unquestionable, I'm able to put my own bias aside and offer my humble opinion, I still respect you in the morining even if your negative on the consevative side of issues /candidates and stories you report on , thanks for your very hard and passionate work.

    Thank you!

It's really nice to have a news program that reports the news in a fair, honest way. It's not always easy and I for one truly appreciate the approach you and the rest of 360 take, giving all the angles and letting the viewers make up their own minds.

Aw, shucks. You're welcome Anderson. Your show is certainly one of the best news show, if not the best. I especially like "keeping them honest" as well as your fun engaging aspects of the show, like the caption contest and blogging. You're a great anchor with intelligent, relevant questions.
I really like it when your show covers stories that are not on other networks... although you don't always do that. Keep up your originality!

Anderson, I watch every night I can because I trust - so far - that you will ask hard questions and dig for the truth from the decision-makers and the powerful in this country. Please don't waver or back down at this critical time.

You're welcome. we say in Mexico that you harvest what you have sowed. You and your staff do a very professional job every day. I started watching your show on January and I haven't miss one since then because I find it very professional and unbiased
As a viewer from a foreign country It is interesting to see how politics in many countries are very much alike. We had a electoral process two years ago and the same kind of campaing took place here.
Congratulations and keep up the excellent work.

    Anderson:
As viewers, we also "get it" Anderson and that is why we watch AC360.

It is pretty obvious when the verbal lynching start who the broadcaster is endorsing. Though I know it isn't always easy to remain objective in politics, the ranting and raving of newscasters only lower the standard of the profession.

Greta Van Susteren will only benefit from not trashing rivals. Americans want something different. We see right through the "garbage" and just switch the channel. It is that easy.

Congratulations on the time slot and great ratings. It is not a fluke that AC360 has succeeded; it has demonstrated that viewers want more from broadcast news.

    Hello Anderson:

Congratulations on all your many successes and achievements.

I have always admired the fact that you let viewers make up their own minds about what we see,and form our own opinions and thoughts about it.

Not being from the U.S.,I am seeing all the political coverage as someone "on the outside looking in",I suppose-and sometimes,I wonder, why it has to go on so long,as opposed to our elections here in Canada.

It seems as if it has been years!

I hope though, that in addition to election coverage over the next few months, that you may get the chance,if time permits you to,to do more field work, whether it be the Middle East,or for Planet In Peril.

I remember you said awhile ago you had been trying to go to Iraq.

It would also be great to have some updates on Burma,Afghanistan, DRC, or the situation in China on the program as well, if we can.

I hope,as well, that you may get a chance to get back to NOLA,and the Gulf Coast,to give us some updates-perhaps for the 3 year anniversary of Katrina?

I look forward to the new Planet in Peril: Battle Lines.

Stay safe in all your travels
    Take care.

Hey Anderson, You are welcome. I'd have to be dead or in a coma(which did happen in December) to miss your program.
I look forward each evening to AC 360 and enjoy your delivery of both sides of an issue with the proclamation that we "get" to make up our own minds. You repeat those words frequently.
I do admit to politic fatigue but I am just as enthused as others, that many younger people are much more interested in the political climate and your program helps to facilitate their interest.
    See ya tonight.

Anderson, congratulations to you and the 360 staff on the success of the program these last two quarters–I'm kind of a ratings geek and was happy to read the reports of 360's demo win.

The political coverage on 360 has been very good and hopefully after the political season winds down a bit, we'll get more coverage of Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa and even NOLA and the Gulf Coast–your field work has always been one of the best things about the show.

And are you sure Greta doesn't take part in any trashing? I think I've seen a few not-so-nice comments she's made about 360, but nevermind...

In all the time I've been watching your program I've never heard you attack the competition, I have heard the competition attack you. Anderson, we the viewers want to thank you for putting on such an amazing program. You work very hard to not put words in people's mouth, but instead, give them the information to make their own decisions on important issues. I really respect you for that and I enjoy watching every night. Congratulations and I wish you continued success.

Hey Anderson I have watched for years. Between you and all the other great reporters/contributors like Erica, Gary, Candy and everyone else yall really do a great job reporting the stories for what they are and not just what you thinks folks want to hear.

Yea the competition might make both you and your FOX rival better but you still knock their socks off every time. From the excellent reporting on your show, to the amazing chats and debates online along with the fun beat 360 contest that other show doesn't hold a candle to 360. Keep up the good work guys :)

You’re welcome, Anderson. You and your staff do a great job every night and it shows. I’ve always given your program great reviews because of the outstanding work that you all do.

I’ve also made comments that were not so positive sometimes, and if that was the case, I hope you take them as “constructive” feedback. Please know that your viewers do that only because we care. For me personally, I’d rather have someone tell me that I can improve on something because this gives me an opportunity to continue to learn and grow.

Thanks for listening, and keep up the good work.

    Hi Anderson,
As a viewer, I could care less about ratings. All I ask of a news program is give me the facts, and leave the twisting, weaving and spinning of those facts to other programs. I've been disappointed in CNN sometimes, but I still find it's were I watch the news.
Please keep up world news topics, and do the stories that most programs don't or won't. At the end of the day, being a maverick newscast, will bring more viewers than copy cats, too catty to care about the viewers anymore. Keep up the good work.

Journalism is neutral in nature but there is always a slant because we are human and flavor it with our perspective.

The most important part is that the truth and the story gets out there.

People are smart and will choose what is best for them.

Keep on the high road, it suits you well.

    Congratulation on your success.
