Hey everyone.......Happy Canada Day to the Canadian Bloggers!!!!!!

EJ (USA)   July 1st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

That women in the hospital story is very sad.

Manoel Queiroz   July 1st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

forget the gas prices, home foreclosures and and job losses.......Starbucks are closing down shops. You finally know the economy is bad when people are not buying their $5 coffees :(

Kimether - Atlanta, GA   July 1st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

The woman dying at Kings County Hospital is so sad. Because it was the psychiatric ward, the security guards that just looked at her and walked away probably thought she was just having an odd psychiatric episode.

Dawn   July 1st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Hi everyone- regarding the woman that died. Didn't this same thing happen in an emergency room some time back? There is absolutely no excuse for this.

Tracey - Boston   July 1st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Hello Everyone:

Foreclosures are at least 15% for the City of Boston.

The lady in the hospital.. I'm boiling already.

Manoel Queiroz   July 1st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Buddies, i saw too that story of the woman dying in the hospital and everyone near acting like nothing was happening. That's was incredible sad!!

MaryBeth   July 1st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Kimether: the fact that she was in a psych ward and something happened should have had the opposite effect. My mom worked on a psych floor for 12 years...anything that happened was taken seriously because you just never knew what was serious and what wasn't.

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   July 1st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

When homes went from 200,000 to 1 million in five years? That was really the time to step in. Now they will have a mess to fix.

Mechelle-- Oklahoma   July 1st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

i think those who worked at the hospital that nite should be fired! Yes, all of those. that is completely unacceptable.

CaseyJPS - California   July 1st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

I'm infuriated by the lack of leadership our government has exhibited since the gas lines of the 70s. The writing on the wall (then) was very, very clear. We're just terribly terribly ignorant for not focusing on progressive energy policies.

EJ (USA)   July 1st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Didn’t this same thing happen in an emergency room some time back?

I think the woman who had a heart attack and slumped over.

Kimether - Atlanta, GA   July 1st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

I'm actually very happy to see Obama connecting with the faith community. I'm one of those politically moderate Christians and refuse to give my vote to Reps just because they traditionally carry this particular voting group.

Mike, Syracuse, NY   July 1st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

The government in actuality has little power to make major impacts to the economy. It's like trying to turn a supertanker with an oar.

Jolene   July 1st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Hi Bloggers! After spending Sunday afternoon in my local ER, I'm not surprised about that lady who died. It's sad that she couldn't even rely on the medical facility staff to keep an eye on her. Afterall, my guess is she wasn't there because she was feeling good.

Verdonna Spencer   July 1st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

I'm a person that suffer from a very serious illness of the brain and to see that situation in that emergency room is horrifying.I have to go to the emergency room sometimes myself and I hope I never have to encounter anything like that.

EJ (USA)   July 1st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Plus I think the workers at the hospital tried to cover it up.

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   July 1st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

It appears that not one politican has answers that are a concrete fix it.

Cynthia   July 1st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Those people working should be fired and the other people sitting in the waiting area at least should have gotten some help for her.

CaseyJPS - California   July 1st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

I love John McCain empathetically talking about the poor–like he would know, in this day and age, what it is to be poor. Give me a break.

Claire in Birmingham, AL   July 1st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Wait, so John McCain suddenly *wants* to help struggling homeowners now? Wasn't he all "they were irresponsible, they're on their own" just, like, last month? Don't get me wrong, I'm glad he's turned around, but after his first stance and statement, it doesn't make me change my mind about him.

Dawn   July 1st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

MaryBeth, you are spot on. You should take everything seriously in any hospital situation.

Frank   July 1st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Increased fuel prices, which Obama says are necessary to reduce fuel consumption, hurt the poorest Americans most not only because of prices at the pump but because increased fuel increases the cost of everything transported or manufactured with petroleum products. Make the decision now to produce more oil domestically AND promote alternatives. We should have done this 10 years ago.

Tammy, Berwick, LA   July 1st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Hi everyone...

The economy issues are pretty scary. I could care less whether Obama is patriotic or not. I also don't care about McCain and the mythical Bush association. What I care about is that $4.50 per gallon at the pump and the ridiculous cost of groceries and utilities.

Anna - chicago ,il   July 1st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

It's sad to see someone in such need of help be completely ignored ...it speaks volumes to the problems in the health system

Gina - Missouri   July 1st, 2008 10:09 pm ET

I was glad to see that they caught the man who reportedly killed 8 people here and in Illinois. I was in Festus, Mo on Monday, scary to think he was running loose there at that time.

Tracey - Boston   July 1st, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Mary Beth, unfortunately not all hospitals operate the same....

I hate this story .. when you feel the most vulnerable in a place you are supposed to feel secure

EJ (USA)   July 1st, 2008 10:09 pm ET

MaryBeth, you are spot on. You should take everything seriously in any hospital situation.

especially someone who has fallen to the floor – I don't know how much more of a sign they could've gotten

Jolene   July 1st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

The problem with solving the economy issue is getting everyone to agree on what to do! It will take months and months....

Great conversation!

Dawn   July 1st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

EJ- you're right and it was a busy ER. If I recall people were stepping over her.

CaseyJPS - California   July 1st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

The President has little effect on immediate change in the economy. What we're experiencing now are the results of 7 years of shooting from the hip. It all started with the ill-conceived tax cuts when Bush took office. Let's not forget about our occupation in the middle east–Cheney certainly has done well, while our kids and their kids will be paying for this economy for the rest of their lives.

Tammy, Berwick, LA   July 1st, 2008 10:11 pm ET

I don't think either candidate has a current clue about what poverty is like. But I do believe they need to get one if their presidency is to be successful.

Kimether - Atlanta, GA   July 1st, 2008 10:11 pm ET

What makes it really bad is that the woman in the hospital waiting room was there because she was waiting for a bed to become free. I hope we learn more of what she died from, seeing that she was in the psychiatric ward and not the standard ER.

Anna - chicago ,il   July 1st, 2008 10:11 pm ET

This hospital situation is unfortunately becoming an ugly trend...very sad

Karen   July 1st, 2008 10:11 pm ET

He doesn't look like a killer – he's too little.

Mary Anne   July 1st, 2008 10:11 pm ET

I saw John McCain at a Town Hall meeting yesterday. he has a definite plan to bring down our energy prices – heating oil, electricity and gas. I haven't heard anything from Obama. I am on disability and am worried about heating cost for the winter.

Kaye, Pensacola & Chattanooga   July 1st, 2008 10:12 pm ET

I'm afraid that the story of the woman in the ER is the norm.

Terri-Ann, TX   July 1st, 2008 10:12 pm ET

The only time they have any sense of urgency in the emergency room is if blood is gushing from your body... and they rush to help so that the blood doesn't touch them. You get help faster in a doctor's office than in an emergency room.

Kimether - Atlanta, GA   July 1st, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Kings County Hospital did fire every staff person involved so at least some action has been done.

Maureen T   July 1st, 2008 10:12 pm ET

I find when I have gone to ER that the nurses are a little aloof and laidback. I guess day after day in ER can play on them. But one would think that if you are not well the safest place would be the hospital, right??

Manoel Queiroz   July 1st, 2008 10:13 pm ET

What make me feel real bad with the story on the woman in the hospital is that were two people in the same room and what they did do help?? Nothing, nothing!! At least they could scream for help. Where is The Caring for other people in this hours. In this time i start to think where did our humanity gone??

Susan - North Haven,CT   July 1st, 2008 10:13 pm ET

The economy getting to this point is what happens when it's strength is based on Wall Street activities instead of the "real world".

Too bad nobody ask me.. I could have told them 2 years ago that things were heading south.

Tammy, Berwick, LA   July 1st, 2008 10:13 pm ET

So does the faith based initiative get any better than it is now? What I worked with in addictions counseling was a complete joke and waste of tax dollars.

Scott - Ohio   July 1st, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Hello AC and everyone. This is my first time on the Blog. There is no excuse for what happend to the woman in the hospital.

Cathy   July 1st, 2008 10:14 pm ET

I happy to see Obama go after the religious vote. Democrats have let the Republicans have this segment of the voting population for too long.

EJ (USA)   July 1st, 2008 10:14 pm ET

I don’t think either candidate has a current clue about what poverty is like.

Well Barack's mom did need food stamps at one point so he wasn't born with a silver spoon. And even if he were – it depends on how well they connect and understand the people who are having these hardships.

MaryBeth   July 1st, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Anything that happens to a mentally unstable person should be taken with the utmost seriousness. Speaking as someone who suffers from depression and required to take medication if something happened to me due to mental instability, I would hope that everything would be done to help me because of that condition, not inspite of it.

I know all hospitals don't work the same and that just makes it worse, they should all work the same.

Kathy, Chicago   July 1st, 2008 10:14 pm ET

The economic situation looks bleak from both sides.

Cindy   July 1st, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Obama cares nothing about anyones religion. He is just after votes. If he did he wouldn't be against a lot of things that most religions are for.

Cindy..Ga.

Kevin   July 1st, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Why is it that Obama is questioned on his religious beliefs but McCain gets a free pass? I believe that Obama has spent more time in the pews during his life than McCain, but due to the fact that Johnny Mac is a republican everyone just assumes that he is religious.

Jolene   July 1st, 2008 10:16 pm ET

I also think that there are so many people who go to the ER and don't really have an emergency or a normal doctor to go to so the staff gets a bit oblivious to it all.

Frank   July 1st, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Obama speaking out on faith? The candidate that supports partial birth abortion, gay marriage and who attended a church that can be described, at best, as being controversial? Keeping up with Obamas sprint to the center on so many issues takes a scorecard and time-watch.

Paul, Chicago, Illinois   July 1st, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Where do the "Rich people of this country invest there money?" One guess, the oil companies!!!! It's the rich stealing from the poor. We need a real Robin Hood in this country thats for sure to save and standup for the poor!!!!

Julie - Bahamas   July 1st, 2008 10:20 pm ET

I would never check into a hospital without a health care advocate. Be it a hired advocate, your friend, spouse or parent. I have seen too many scary things in hospitals all over the US and abroad. The nursing shortage is heading towards an all time high and our insurance system is totally wacky. It is like Russian Roulette. Sadly

Erica Hill

Hi, bloggers

Dawn - there was a case of a woman who died while waiting for ER care in LA last year... different situation, but equally scary

Miles, Texas   July 1st, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Obama is brave to wade in to the Evangelical fray. It's scary territory especially for a moderate.

Kathy, Chicago   July 1st, 2008 10:20 pm ET

I think that Obama needs to follow a different path. He has his own agenda, not God's.

CaseyJPS - California   July 1st, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Religious zealots, or those making an issue our of religion in this election, want to trample the constitution. It is their way or the highway, as it always has been. This will never change.

Mary Anne   July 1st, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Why did Obama give a speech saying that we are no longer a Christian nation a few years ago – now he is trying to pander to the Christians? I can't believe a word he says. I miss Hillary.

Kaye, Pensacola & Chattanooga   July 1st, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Tell 'em Roland! "Obrigado" – impressive Andy!

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   July 1st, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Anderson Cooper

The hospital story is so horrifying.. and whats even worse is that many of us can imagine it happening at hospitals we have been too.

Hannah Storm   July 1st, 2008 10:22 pm ET

I think Roland's suggestion for Obama to meet with Focus on the Family and Tony is a good one....I think Obama and McCain should talk to everyone they can. Find where you agree and go from there

Mike, Syracuse, NY   July 1st, 2008 10:22 pm ET

Norma, religion is the basis for many people's moral values. Everyone wants a candidate that shares their values, hence religion is relevant.

Kimether - Atlanta, GA   July 1st, 2008 10:22 pm ET

Kevin   July 1st, 2008 10:24 pm ET

The saddest thing about the hospital story is that it isn't as shocking as it should be.

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   July 1st, 2008 10:24 pm ET

I think the way hospitals are lately, you could die in your hospital bed and no one would notice for hours. It's getting bad out there.

Kimberly   July 1st, 2008 10:24 pm ET

Why should Obama not be allowed to speak out on faith and have a compassionate position to a diverse group of people and difficult issues. Is it not in the bible, "judge not lest ye be judged?"

Maureen T   July 1st, 2008 10:25 pm ET

Wishing beautiful Angelina all the best!!

Paula, Colorado   July 1st, 2008 10:25 pm ET

Anderson,
Hi! It seems what a person in public service can do on religious issues is limited because of the diversity of the public. It is admirable, though, that Obama is willing to focus on religion– it shouldn't be repressed.

Doug   July 1st, 2008 10:26 pm ET

I'd sure be interested to know who is currently serving as Barack Obama's spiritual advisor since he removed his membership from his home church.

judy   July 1st, 2008 10:27 pm ET

It's critical to bring along a family member who can advocate for you if you want quality care at a hospital.

Stacy   July 1st, 2008 10:27 pm ET

The hospital story is so horrifying.. and whats even worse is that many of us can imagine it happening at hospitals we have been too.

Definitely. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that happened at my hospital. Too many patients, not enough staff.

Sharon from Indy   July 1st, 2008 10:27 pm ET

What ever happen to the Good Samaritan? Or just human decency?

Gretchen   July 1st, 2008 10:27 pm ET

I think we show our limited world view when we assume "faith based iniatives" only come from evangelical, or even christian, institutions.

Faith applies to people of Catholic, Lutheran, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, etc. faith, not just evangelical baptists.

how you all doing. first time here. thought id weight in on whats goin on. The presidential elections a joke none of them have a clue of what real life is like for most of americans. So nothing will change. We, middle america, are on our own we have to come together and decide to lead our country, because our, or maybe the government is not. They dont care about us. With the energy crisis, just mandate that the automakers, all of them, have to have 30% of their fleet of an alternative fuel by next year to sell cars in america. I guarntee that it will be done. we buy the most cars we need to switch that around to make it a plus not a negative. just one of the common sense things that can be done to change our country, the government will not do this so we must.

Kimether - Atlanta, GA   July 1st, 2008 10:31 pm ET

The main cause of the woman dying in the hospital was the lack of an available bed in the first place. Sad.

Tammy, Berwick, LA   July 1st, 2008 10:31 pm ET

Most addicts are lovely people except when they're boozed up or high on their other drug(s) of choice. The wife sounds like a typical spouse of an addict enabling and protecting until the bitter end.

A combination of drugs and alcohol??- Is there any time in between to be a "nice guy" ?? The wife sounds oppressed and numb with that kind of "nice guy" statement. In fact she may also have sounded sarcastic having mentioned the use of both drugs and drink in the killer.

judy   July 1st, 2008 10:38 pm ET

I think it's surprising that the serial killer went after after a household of five people including 2 men. Might be an "opportunity killer" but seems like at least these murders required some degree of planning.

Hospital staff ignoring her on the floor is horrible, wrong and outrageous - but I am equally disturbed by the other people in the waiting room who did NOTHING to help her – they didnt check on a woman on the floor?! What a sad chapter for this hospital and for our society...

Shea, North Carolina   July 1st, 2008 10:40 pm ET

I cannot believe nobody helped that poor woman. They didn't even go get help for her, not even the security guard. What country are we in?

MaryBeth   July 1st, 2008 10:40 pm ET

This video is criminal!!! Remind me to not get sick or injured in NYC.

Caroline   July 1st, 2008 10:40 pm ET

Wow. So sad that another hospital cannot seem to care.

Kathy, Chicago   July 1st, 2008 10:40 pm ET

That tape in the er is horrible. It shows the value of human life. Did she have insurance? Probably not.

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   July 1st, 2008 10:40 pm ET

Shocking tape indeed. How often does it happen when the camera footage is not available? One wonders

Jolene   July 1st, 2008 10:40 pm ET

I hope that Security Guard watching TV instead of the people is one of them who got fired. That hospital has a lot of explaining to do!

Jemaul   July 1st, 2008 10:41 pm ET

I take back my comment about the camera in the ER. It apparently does no good, if there isn't anyone watching that either.

Palm Beach blog   July 1st, 2008 10:41 pm ET

I only recently relocated from Brooklyn NY and has visited several of the City's emergency rooms over the last twenty seven years only to see this kind of tragic end to human lives.I was always fearfull of my love ones having to seek treatment at this Kings County Hospital.

CaseyJPS - California   July 1st, 2008 10:41 pm ET

This is absolutely unbelievable. Even if you weren't in the room at the time she keeled over wouldn;t you be cursious enough to go and check on here? If there have been problems in the past, why wouldn't there be consistent monitoring? SOmebody's in deep trouble.

Francesca Elm   July 1st, 2008 10:41 pm ET

This is ridiculous. Not only are employees are ignoring her, but the other people in the waiting room. No one takes any responsibility. The worst part is her death could have been prevented

dave s, tinley park IL   July 1st, 2008 10:41 pm ET

my god–that's really horrible. So apathetic it's hard to believe

Betty Ann, Nacogdoches,TX   July 1st, 2008 10:41 pm ET

I agree Norma!
About the Hospital: there is no excuse for that! I am outraged!

Caroline   July 1st, 2008 10:41 pm ET

And when someone waits 24 hours to be seen at a hospital isn't that a clue that the place is not being well run?

Mike, Syracuse, NY   July 1st, 2008 10:41 pm ET

Can we introduce Joe Horn to Sheley?

Tyler in Appleton, WI   July 1st, 2008 10:41 pm ET

I can't believe that anybody could possibly just leave another person to die on a hospital floor. What are those security guards' jobs anyways. If someone came in with a gun woud they sit in their chair?

Dee F.   July 1st, 2008 10:41 pm ET

Can't wait to hear what Joe Horne has to say...

Anna - chicago ,il   July 1st, 2008 10:42 pm ET

People in society are always afraid to get involved in difficult situations...there have been too many stories of good people trying to help and having it back fire on them

Jacqui Chan   July 1st, 2008 10:42 pm ET

evening bloggers, it's been a while...
it is disgusting how so many in our (and most) societies have such little empathy for those suffering from mental illness. Mental illness is caused by a trauma to the brain or a chemical imbalance there should be no shame and these people should be treated with dignity.

Tammy, Berwick, LA   July 1st, 2008 10:42 pm ET

This is unreal. How do you leave psych patients unattended (no checks) and get away with it? This defies any legitimate attempt at best practices (or any practices for that matter). I guess the lesson is have a family member or friend with you. My uncle is schizophrenic, and I guess he's lucky that we look out for him. I don't get it, and yet I do.

David, Indiana   July 1st, 2008 10:42 pm ET

I'm glad they caught that guy, too. Hopefully it's the actual culprit.

Kimether - Atlanta, GA   July 1st, 2008 10:42 pm ET

The people in the room are possibly psychiatric patients as well, so there is no way of knowing their mental capacity to understand why the woman was laying on the floor. Who knew that the hospital my brother was born in and that I have spent countless hours in the ER would make national news. If it was gonna make the news, I knew it would be because of this kind of situation.

Katina   July 1st, 2008 10:42 pm ET

As someone entering the health care field, I am absolutely sickened how people can come and go in the ER and not help her. You think that other people in the waiting room who are there for their loved ones would assist her. I'm sure they'd want someone to help if it were their friend or family member on the floor.

kim   July 1st, 2008 10:42 pm ET

It's a shame to live in a civiliezed society in which people are not civilized. I don't think we move as far as we thought since the beginning of civilization

Teresa, Oh   July 1st, 2008 10:42 pm ET

While I dont think Horn is a hero, I most definitely appreciate what he did. I'm not glad the ILLEGALS are dead, per se, but.... they are in the country illegally. I applaud the verdict in this matter. Horn is not a criminal. If the constitution gives us the right to bear arms, for what would we bear arms if not for intruders in the country that are robbing our homes? I would welcome Mr. Horn as my neighbor.

MaryBeth   July 1st, 2008 10:43 pm ET

Kevin: HE wasn't being threatened...they were running away from him. They hadn't even robbed HIS house!!! They were running across his lawn. He was in NO danger for his life.

Irene in Texas   July 1st, 2008 10:43 pm ET

I do not agree with people robbing people of their property but it is not right for someone to leave out of his house where he is safe to kill someone.

Mechelle-- Oklahoma   July 1st, 2008 10:43 pm ET

what is also disturbing is the fact that her medical records are different from the video. it makes you wonder...

Sharon from Indy   July 1st, 2008 10:43 pm ET

Mr. Horn: Vigilantism is not the answer.

Samantha Dempsey   July 1st, 2008 10:43 pm ET

I would like to thank all of the major news networks for picking up this story. Helping to protect our small towns in northern Illinois. I live 15 minutes from Rockfalls and things have been very scary here. With your help he was caught. THANK YOU!!

Saera El Paso, TX   July 1st, 2008 10:43 pm ET

isn't the point of a hospital and it's workers to help people?

Karen M, Ohio   July 1st, 2008 10:43 pm ET

I was speechless when a co-worker told us about the woman in the waiting room and I still am but even more so after seeing the security guard sitting there. Noone even getting up to go check on her is appalling.

Andrea from Canada   July 1st, 2008 10:45 pm ET

Hahaha @ Mike, that might put him closer to hero status.

Vincent   July 1st, 2008 10:45 pm ET

I wonder if these people that ignored that woman would prefer if others ignored them or their loved ones if they were in a similar situation.
This whole scenario is just ridiculous, and i wonder about the morality and human decency of those people.

Saera El Paso, TX   July 1st, 2008 10:46 pm ET

the operator is right, there is no property worth killing for
property can be replaced – lives can't

RE: Horn-my mother always said "Two wrongs don't make a right." My mother, as usual, was right.

Kevin   July 1st, 2008 10:46 pm ET

He shot them in the back, I take my prior comments back...that is just wrong.

Fay, CA   July 1st, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Since Horn was so anxious to shoot someone, why didn't he just try to wound these guys and then let the police handle the rest? He seemed to just be out for blood. No hero.

Dee F.   July 1st, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Why shoot BOTH in the back...what ever happened to a warning shot?

Betty Ann, Nacogdoches,TX   July 1st, 2008 10:46 pm ET

He warned the robbers to freeze or he would shoot. Come on, that is legal in TX. If the police can't get there and he has them on the phone, maybe he WAS protecting himself.
Do we just let crime run rampant?
I don't even own a gun because I would not shoot someone, but crime is getting worse and worse.

CaseyJPS - California   July 1st, 2008 10:46 pm ET

I insist he did the right thing, based on Texas law. Please add a hash mark to that side of the argument.

Kaye, Pensacola & Chattanooga   July 1st, 2008 10:47 pm ET

Why does Mr. Horn think he was going to die when the guys were in the yard next door and their backs were turned toward him.

judy   July 1st, 2008 10:47 pm ET

come on - joe told the dispatcher he was going to kill them before he went outside. this is hardly a case where he feared for his life before he left his house to kill the guys.

Irene in Texas   July 1st, 2008 10:47 pm ET

If he feared for his life, he should have stayed inside of his house. I am pretty sure he was safe! I think he was on a mission...

Palm Beach blog   July 1st, 2008 10:47 pm ET

On the Texas grand jury ruling .I have always say the crime problem we see in America is not realy the guns out there ,but the people running around with guns.Mr Horn was told over and over not to exit his home .Instead he killed two people in the back.It is a crime.

Tracey - Boston   July 1st, 2008 10:47 pm ET

Shooting a man in the back is a cowardly act!!

Jolene   July 1st, 2008 10:47 pm ET

I think if he was allowed to have a gun by law and to protect his and his neighbor's property, then he should have shot the two guys in the arms or legs. Afterall, the police were there already.

Cody Williams Toronto, Canada   July 1st, 2008 10:47 pm ET

Erica I could not agree any more, it is very depressing to have to realize that this is what our society has come to, letting a lady lay there and die.

Anna - chicago ,il   July 1st, 2008 10:47 pm ET

People are afraid of someone else's problem becoming their own ..that is why they don't do anything.

Lisa   July 1st, 2008 10:47 pm ET

How could his life be in danger when he was in his own house and those people were next door?

Cindy   July 1st, 2008 10:47 pm ET

Horn was wrong in killing those guys. They were stealing stuff not trying to harm him.

Cindy...Ga.

Caroline   July 1st, 2008 10:47 pm ET

Did Joe Horn ever say why he felt his life was threatened?

Did they point a gun at him?

Did they charge him with knives?

Did they even run toward him? No. They were running away after he warned them and yet, he killed them for probably a $500.00 TV.

dave s, tinley park IL   July 1st, 2008 10:48 pm ET

If you're a criminal, then you should expect anything in return. What about the arrogance of these jerks going into someone's home and stealing their possessions like it's their right to have it??

no tears on my part for these two–good riddance

judy   July 1st, 2008 10:48 pm ET

definitely not "self defense" - jury nullified because the suspects were illegals

Dawn   July 1st, 2008 10:48 pm ET

Joe Horn is right- he is no hero. He could have easily injured them to bring them down. I know it was at night, but I think Joe Horn was a fairly good shot.

MaryEllen Texas   July 1st, 2008 10:48 pm ET

I think what Joe Horn did was absolutely wrong. Absolutely wrong. Just listening to his audio tape and intent - and who knows whether anyone moved those bodies? Keep in mind – that here in Texas most of the homes in the sub-divisions are very close to each other. It's not like these are homes on 1/2 acre of land. His intent was go out and kill those guys without knowing what they did or who they were. Suppose it was his own family members ??

Betty Ann, Nacogdoches,TX   July 1st, 2008 10:48 pm ET

The robbers were in his yard!

joanne- Calgary , Canada   July 1st, 2008 10:48 pm ET

Evening Anderson and Erica.. long time watcher, first time blogger

.. i can't even put into words how horrified i am at this hospital story.. ..what ever happened to helping your fellow man? How could anyone turn a blind eye?

Tammy, Berwick, LA   July 1st, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Can anyone say trigger happy? This is premeditated. I think he was looking to shoot these guys no matter what. He isn't being rational at all. Someone attempted to break in my house one night, the cops came before he got in, and I was given a gun for protection the next day (my Dad wanted to years before and I never wanted it until that night). BUT, I'd only use it now if my life or members of my family were in danger. I can't see killing someone who isn't threatening a life.

MaryBeth   July 1st, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Great...so any crime should have the penalty of death? What is Mr. Larsen thinking? It's that kind of mentality that used to get kids hung for stealing bread...

Chris adamec   July 1st, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Dear criminals, if you steal someone's property, you will be stopped, lawfully in Texas. Now you know the risk.

CaseyJPS - California   July 1st, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Fay>
Mr. Horn was scared to death, no doubt. It's hard to anticipate how any of would have reacted in that situation and much easier for us to judged, after the fact.

Sharon   July 1st, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Joe Horne did get involved. Maybe he should have been inside that hospital emergency room. With neigbors like him, the neighborhood watch program works.

Doug   July 1st, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Of course he said they were in his yard...he'd just murdered them!

Jacqui Chan   July 1st, 2008 10:50 pm ET

Kimether, that's a good point that you make but why was the patient waiting unattended for so many hours?!?

seth sandberg   July 1st, 2008 10:50 pm ET

joe horn is just doing what every neighbor would like to do but he had the guts to do it . if you saw someone robbing your neighbors house you would want to do something but you would not for fear of harm, he did something. its the basic psycological principal; fight or flite, but most of us choose flite.

Kimberly   July 1st, 2008 10:50 pm ET

I am glad to hear that Mr. Horn said that he was not a hero. Obviously these two men were committing a crime, but it is a dangerous precedent to shoot people for breaking into a neighbor's home. Heaven forbid I ever lock myself out of my house and need to break into my own home. My neighbor might shoot me to protect my property!

MaryEllen Texas   July 1st, 2008 10:50 pm ET

Anderson – the plain clothes detective that was there in his car - arrived quickly and actually saw Joe Horn with the gun and chose to drop down in the seat of the car so Joe Horn would not shoot him also. So the policeman did NOTHING.

Mike, Syracuse, NY   July 1st, 2008 10:50 pm ET

Shooting to wound someone only happens in the movies. In the military they teach you to shoot for the center of mass, i.e. the torso.

Kevin   July 1st, 2008 10:50 pm ET

I agree that by Texas law he was not committing a crime. Everyone does have a right to protect themselves and their own property, and he did shoot them on his own property. Shooting them in the back is uncalled for, especially if the police were at the scene already.

Hannah Storm   July 1st, 2008 10:50 pm ET

wow it is amazing how he knew about that particular law.....if he was asked about others he probably would not have had a clue

David NC   July 1st, 2008 10:50 pm ET

As horrifying as the tape of the lady dying in the waiting room is, I fear not much is going to change in America's health care system. HMO's have just a tight a grip on us as big oil. It will take decades to get us decent health care just as it will take decades to solve the problems with energy.

Peter Barnes   July 1st, 2008 10:51 pm ET

How could you defend this man, I live in a tough neighborhood and I would not shoot over burglury, he was scared and he should have not shot anyone... What a pathetic man... I hope karama comes back to him big time.

Lisa   July 1st, 2008 10:51 pm ET

People can not just go around be judge and jury. That is the law's job not the average person.

Sharon from Indy   July 1st, 2008 10:51 pm ET

Were the suspects shooting at Mr Horn? So what justifies his shooting them in the back?

Norma   July 1st, 2008 10:51 pm ET

What happened to the words FREEZE, STOP or ALTO in this case before you shoot.

Jolene   July 1st, 2008 10:51 pm ET

I'm still surprised he wasn't indicted, I think the Grand Jury should have indicated him and then let a criminal trial prove innocence or guilt.

CaseyJPS - California   July 1st, 2008 10:51 pm ET

Tracey>
Once someone feels violated, they will never sleep the same again. Letting the two men go is a frightening thought (as in, they will come back) unless you can finish the job.

Michelle   July 1st, 2008 10:51 pm ET

Who goes outside to confront robbers if they are afraid for their life? What protection? A lock door is your protection, he did not need protection!

Genevieve M, TX   July 1st, 2008 10:51 pm ET

Anderson, why do you keep mentioning that the two criminals are "illegal"? I highly doubt that was a factor in Horn's decision to shoot the criminals.

As for being "unarmed".....I was in a dining in a restaurant that was robbed with "toy guns." Guess what? It's still a felony! The three men were caught and all three will be spending the next 20 years in prison.

There is a reason why the signs on the highways entering Texas say "Don't Mess With Texas".

Kristen   July 1st, 2008 10:51 pm ET

First time to join the blog! I love reading all of the comments. I have to qucikly comment on the story of Mr. Horn. I don't think that we can say what we would do unless we were in that situation. Mr. Horn wasn't in the wrong here in my opinion, but like he say he is no hero. Enjoy the show Anderson, Erica, and 360 crew!

Julia Warren, Plainfield NJ   July 1st, 2008 10:51 pm ET

Shooting anyone in the back is WRONG.

Katina   July 1st, 2008 10:52 pm ET

He wasn't protecting himself... they were breaking into his neighbor's house. I don't understand why the robbers would go from his neighbor's house to his, especially if they saw him standing in the yard with a gun.

MaryEllen Texas   July 1st, 2008 10:52 pm ET

What was life threatening about the two robbers? They were robbing - they didn't have weapons - so how could anyone say Joe Horn was "protecting his property, himself?" I think this is being discarded because it was learned they were illegal immigrants and at least one with a criminal history.

Cindy   July 1st, 2008 10:52 pm ET

Just because they were in his yard didn't mean that he had to kill them. Did they ever threaten him?

Cindy..Ga.

Caroline   July 1st, 2008 10:52 pm ET

This guy's argument is full of baloney. He compares a woman being assaulted with two property thieves. Another false argument from the gun lovers.

Shea, North Carolina   July 1st, 2008 10:52 pm ET

I just don't think you can judge this guy for shooting to kill. If we were in his shoes we all might have done the same thing, who knows. Gives you something to think about.

Kimether - Atlanta, GA   July 1st, 2008 10:52 pm ET

Of course they were shot in the back, a man speaking a language they may not have understood pointed a rifle at them! Without the rifle, the burglars would have probably attacked him.

Emma   July 1st, 2008 10:52 pm ET

It is kind of scary to think that if you're on another person's property he/she has the right to shoot you. I understand he had the right to protect himself if he genuinely felt threatened but I don't think this was the case.

Tracey - Boston   July 1st, 2008 10:52 pm ET

The robbers crossed his yard...

Saera El Paso, TX   July 1st, 2008 10:52 pm ET

so what if they where in his yard?
they weren't running toward him, they were running away
they could have been caught and deported instead of killed

David, Indiana   July 1st, 2008 10:52 pm ET

Every hospital I've ever been in lately the nurses and people in the hospital, patients, have been concerned about each other. It helps if the hospital employees, though, are encouraged to be responsive, answer questions, be helpful, look into things. That's unbelievable negligence in that video.

Sharon from Indy   July 1st, 2008 10:52 pm ET

Tomatoes....and one wonders why South Koreans don't want our beef.

Katherine   July 1st, 2008 10:53 pm ET

What have we come to? Since when has showing compassion for another human being become a hindrance to our own lives?

Tanya   July 1st, 2008 10:53 pm ET

You may have a right to protect yourself but these guys were shot in the back. To me that means that they were running away, not threatening Joe Horn's life or property.

Ana-Boston   July 1st, 2008 10:53 pm ET

Yes, what Joe Hord did was more than wrong. How can you call him "Hero"?

judy   July 1st, 2008 10:53 pm ET

he was committing a crime under texas law. he wasn't acting in self-defense because he told the dispatcher he was going outside to kill these two men. that's a crime everywhere - intentional murder.

Kimether - Atlanta, GA   July 1st, 2008 10:53 pm ET

I knew it couldn't just be tomatoes. Tomatoes are always with other veggies.

Irene in Texas   July 1st, 2008 10:54 pm ET

Hannah Storm   July 1st, 2008 10:54 pm ET

oh Anderson missed the memo :P

The pedegg commercial airs like at least 4 times for me during 360

Dan Miami,FL   July 1st, 2008 10:54 pm ET

This man in TX that shot those men did the right thing. Good Job.

Mike, Syracuse, NY   July 1st, 2008 10:54 pm ET

I have no problem with what Horn did. These people were here illegally and were engaged in illegal acts. They were not victims, they were criminals.

Mr Franks   July 1st, 2008 10:54 pm ET

Well! If they had not chose to break into his neighbors house, they would be walking around today! Guess crime don't pay!

Kimether - Atlanta, GA   July 1st, 2008 10:54 pm ET

Darn Ped-Egg commercial!

Saera El Paso, TX   July 1st, 2008 10:55 pm ET

glad i don't eat tomatoes..

Saul   July 1st, 2008 10:55 pm ET

Joe Horne is a murderer. He called 911, police were on the way, he was in no danger and he killed two people. I cant see how he is justified

Kathy, Andover   July 1st, 2008 10:55 pm ET

It amazes me that people think it's okay for that neighbor to have murdered two men! It was argued that the death sentence is unjust for child molesters. It would be my guess that burglary is less of an offense than child molestation. Yet, people think it was okay for a VIGILANTE to kill his neighbor's burglars. btw, if it is okay to shoot, then why not injure, rather than shoot to kill?

Genevieve M, TX   July 1st, 2008 10:55 pm ET

The PedEgg really works, I have one. You just have to be careful not to "overdo" it, or else you will end up with a sore foot.

Vincent   July 1st, 2008 10:55 pm ET

Horn didnt need to go outside to confront those guys and put himself IN danger. He wasnt in danger in his own 'castle'.
Too many guns out there though, and too many gungho cowboys all too willing to use them for little or no reason.

However, Im not sorry those thieves got shot. But Horn couldve knee-capped them though instead of shooting them in the back while theyre running away.

Caroline   July 1st, 2008 10:57 pm ET

When I see the PedEgg adds I wonder how many women actually have so much spare time that they are obsessing about their heels?

Hannah Storm   July 1st, 2008 10:57 pm ET

No wonder I had not seen the Pedegg commerical today......it was becoming the new HeadOn commercials

Memories.....oh Barbara

Cindy   July 1st, 2008 10:57 pm ET

That is the sickest commercial! Who wants to see people scrubbing junk off of their feet!? YUCK!!

Night Anderson, Erica and all.

Cindy...Ga.

Saera El Paso, TX   July 1st, 2008 10:57 pm ET

eww feet... i hate those commercials

Evan   July 1st, 2008 10:57 pm ET

The two were illegal immigrants and criminals with previous convictions. I hope that I have a neighbor like that. He is willig to keep his neighborhood safe. The police can not get to these scenes quickly and homeowners have the right to protect their property. These two will not be able to commit crimes again. It also makes your neighborhood safer. The Castle Doctrine is a vital tool in the fight against crime since our legal system allows criminals to roam free.

Kimether - Atlanta, GA   July 1st, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Anderson, Erica, yall are hilarious!

Sheesh   July 1st, 2008 10:58 pm ET

The story about the women in the hospital is just so disturbing, not only that she had to wait more then 24 hours for a bed but because it's like putting a mirror up to the American culture and where its headed. How disgusting!

Katina   July 1st, 2008 10:58 pm ET

Wow – I'm slightly disturbed by the tribute to the PedEgg. And Erica, I was just thinking the same thing about looking like a cheese grater!

Have a great night! I really enjoy the Live Blog – I've only done it a few times, and find it wonderfully addicting and insightful.

James Dylan   July 1st, 2008 10:58 pm ET

Hopefully this will send a message to criminals entering peoples homes, a place many believe they are safe from the ouside world of crime. Maybe they question whether stealing a 500 dollar tv is worth their lives.

KevinM   July 1st, 2008 10:59 pm ET

cheeezzz grater what an image , so long ped egg hip hip hooray

I think the Texas law need to be revised that man should be in prison his life wasn't in jeopardy he ran out of the house and shot those guys in the back which in my opinion is very cowardly.

lamar   July 1st, 2008 11:00 pm ET

HE needs to look in the eyes of the pqrents and tell them he shot there kids in the back for property
