Anderson is back.
Tonight, a wall of water with no place to go but down the Mississippi and only about two dozen levees along the way to contain it. Each and every one of them is in danger of giving way like the one near Gulfport, Illinois did today. Dan Simon is there with the latest.
Randi Kaye has an up close look at Michelle Obama’s image makeover. Does she have what it takes to be a first lady? What impact will she have on the campaign?
Dana Bash is on the trail today with a look at the fight between McCain and Obama over energy and the war on terror. Who won? We’ll find out from the best political team on television.
Erica Hill has an update on story we brought you last week. It’s about Samuel Israel, a hedge fund manager, convicted of defrauding investors out of nearly 500 million dollars. He was supposed to start a 20-year prison sentence last week but he never showed up, though his car was found abandoned on a bridge with the words “suicide is painless” scrawled on the side. Authorities weren’t sure if he killed himself or went on the run. Tonight, they have their answer.
Be sure to check out Anderson and Erica out on our live web camera from the 360° studio. We’ll turn the camera on at 945p ET and turn it off at 11p ET. LINK TO THE BLOG CAMERA
We’ll start posting comments to this blog at 10p ET and stop at 11p ET.

June 17th, 2008 10:01 pm ET What a terrible tragedy for the midwest. The levees breaking are such a nightmare for those involved. |

June 17th, 2008 10:01 pm ET Hi Anderson, Welcome back! Loved your reporter notebook from Africa. You have a wonderful talent with words. Looks like another great show. |

| mollie |
June 17th, 2008 10:04 pm ET glad you’re back anderson! you did a great job out there. |
| Cynthia |
June 17th, 2008 10:05 pm ET Is there some kind of regulatory board or something that should be checking to make sure that the levees are safe and do what they are supposed to do? |
| Mike, Syracuse, NY |
June 17th, 2008 10:05 pm ET The levees are a mixed blessing. Without them the natural flood plains would absorb much of the overflow. When man tries to tame nature, nature always wins. |
| Lorie Ann, Buellton, California |
June 17th, 2008 10:05 pm ET 25 levees could be breached? That would cause a huge amount of damage to property. |
| Cindy |
June 17th, 2008 10:05 pm ET I can’t believe all of this flooding just with rain! Cindy…Ga. |
| Tracey - Boston |
June 17th, 2008 10:06 pm ET Wow man made levees… That was smart I hope it helps |
| Lou |
June 17th, 2008 10:06 pm ET The flooding I see on TV in those states reminds me of the flooding that we had up here in Manitoba in 1997. It must be a very frightening time for those people trying to save their land and homes. |
| Hannah Storm |
June 17th, 2008 10:06 pm ET these floods are just so massive. I feel so horrible for the people who are dealing with this |
| Jolene |
June 17th, 2008 10:08 pm ET Nice to see Gary not in water tonight! I just can’t imagine what these people are going through with the flooding. |
| Megan Dresslar |
June 17th, 2008 10:08 pm ET Wow!!! that is so bad for people…… I am shock it was breached by the river……. I saw this morning on Cnn |

| Gary |
June 17th, 2008 10:08 pm ET Rivers flood…the water comes up and then goes down. People clean up afterward. Americans are very resilient people. |

June 17th, 2008 10:10 pm ET What a guy….Gary went to get the trophies…..what a sweetheart |

| Tracey - Boston |
June 17th, 2008 10:10 pm ET Gary that was nice of you!!!! |
| Kimether - Atlanta, GA |
June 17th, 2008 10:10 pm ET Wow! Gary’s cameraman is awesome! Cameramen need to get more credit for what conditions they must film in! |
| Megan Dresslar |
June 17th, 2008 10:10 pm ET I agree with you Jolene, |
| Missy |
June 17th, 2008 10:10 pm ET Mother nature can make us realize how fragile life is. Water is so powerful. |
| Jo Ann, Ohio |
June 17th, 2008 10:11 pm ET I feel so badly for these people. Can those homes ever really be the same again? I wonder how much structural damage is done to those houses as a result of something like this. |
| Hannah Storm |
June 17th, 2008 10:11 pm ET your absolutely right Kimether - those behind the scenes do not get enough credit and praise |
| Fay, CA |
June 17th, 2008 10:11 pm ET Welcome back Anderson, and how cool is Gary Tuchman, helping that lady with her trophies? |
| MaryBeth |
June 17th, 2008 10:11 pm ET The saddest thing is that most of these people do NOT have flood insurance. No one ever thought they would get flooded with the river being so far away. |
| Lorie Ann, Buellton, California |
June 17th, 2008 10:11 pm ET I wonder if FEMA can’t use the trailers, where will these people stay while they rebuild. |
| Susan, Pennsylvania |
June 17th, 2008 10:12 pm ET Can anyone tell me what happens to the farmers who had all their crops washed away? They invested money in the planting season, and now will have no revenue from a harvest. This is a year’s revenue down the drain. Does anybody know? Thanks. |
| Jo Ann, Ohio |
June 17th, 2008 10:12 pm ET I am so glad to see Gary dried out and out of that dirty water; he is such a pro! |
| Lou |
June 17th, 2008 10:12 pm ET I agree with Missy. Mother Nature is powerful |
| Jana, Indiana |
June 17th, 2008 10:13 pm ET Those poor people in the flood zone. My heart goes out to them. Welcome Back Anderson |
| Mike, Syracuse, NY |
June 17th, 2008 10:13 pm ET I’ve heard that this flood level only occurs once every 500 years. Of course no one has been around 500 years to keep track. |
| Sofia |
June 17th, 2008 10:13 pm ET Hi Anderson — I’m writing from Iowa City. Your story just mentioned that the woman in Cedar Rapids did not have flood insurance, and the reporter said most of us here don’t have it. Just to be clear, the reason why most people in Cedar Rapids or Iowa City don’t have flood insurance is because it is not available. You have to live in a designated flood plain to be eligible for the flood insurance….and we are not a designated flood plain. |
| Jim |
June 17th, 2008 10:14 pm ET McCain’s decision today on drilling for oil is a necessary move. I may have to switch and vote for him after all. |
| Christina, Windber, PA |
June 17th, 2008 10:14 pm ET My heart goes out to anyone who had their homes flooded. I can’t imagine what it would be like to come back and find your home in that condition. Your home has so many things that can’t be replaced; so many memories are connected to your home. Welcome back Anderson, it’s nice to see you back, safe and sound. |
| Lou |
June 17th, 2008 10:14 pm ET Susan, up here in Canada, farmers have crop insurance for just these issues. Our government also assist farmers if there is massive crop failures. I wonder if your country has the same thing? |
| Shannon |
June 17th, 2008 10:14 pm ET Obama is doing a terrific job! |
| Tracey - Boston |
June 17th, 2008 10:15 pm ET The worst part about all this flooding is that the insurance companies will only cover so much and the premiums are too high… that was according to a report I saw earlier today on CNN |
| Sarah, Atlanta GA |
June 17th, 2008 10:15 pm ET It’s awful what is gonig on in the midwest with all the flooding. |
| Stacy |
June 17th, 2008 10:15 pm ET Kimether, you’re right. Camera people don’t get near enough credit. They often have to do the same thing as the reporter, but backwards. |
| Gary |
June 17th, 2008 10:15 pm ET Farmers deal with these problems every day. They sometimes have no rain and they take care of business. Our farmers are our life blood, they work very hard, and most don’t complain. |
| Lisa |
June 17th, 2008 10:15 pm ET Susan, Many farmers have flood insurance, but usually that will only pay a percentage of what they have lost. If they did not buy the insurance, there is not much they can do. |
| Cynthia |
June 17th, 2008 10:16 pm ET Yes, especially for those who do not have flood insurance. |
| Cindy |
June 17th, 2008 10:16 pm ET Obama’s supporters are rude to boo Hillary! They need to learn manners! Cindy…Ga. |
CNN |
June 17th, 2008 10:16 pm ET hey everyone.. great to be back.. im a little jet lagged.. i just landed a couple hours ago.. hopefully it wont be too noticeable tonite.. |
| sara. .minneapolis |
June 17th, 2008 10:16 pm ET Lorie Ann, FEMA may not be involved in this case. In the two MN counties that are/have been flooded this time around, the residents don’t qualify for FEMA aid. (that doesn’t mean the state/counties/cities won’t help the people, of course) |
| Kimether - Atlanta, GA |
June 17th, 2008 10:16 pm ET Aw. I’m sad to hear Obama supporters booing about Clinton. There needs to be unity! |
| Billi |
June 17th, 2008 10:16 pm ET Does anyone think that booing the governor of Michigan and Senator Clinton is a good way to create unity? |
| kathy |
June 17th, 2008 10:17 pm ET the boos that obamas supporters give do not help , i think that makes hillarys voters move away even more |
| Cynthia |
June 17th, 2008 10:17 pm ET Not all Obama supporters are rude. |
| Shannon |
June 17th, 2008 10:17 pm ET I really like the ad from Move-On, I feel the same way about my child! |
| klim lala - orlando Fl |
June 17th, 2008 10:17 pm ET sad that Obama’s supporters booooooo Hilary …. I love Candy Crowley and her reporting |
| Marjorie |
June 17th, 2008 10:17 pm ET Those folks in Iowa and Illnois will need lots of bleach and disenfectant cleaning supplies immediately. My grandmothers house looked like that after a flood years ago. It was either the city of Pittsburgh or small towns further up the Monongahela River. The small towns got it. She lived in California, PA |
| Hannah Storm |
June 17th, 2008 10:18 pm ET Anderson, you just landed a couple hours ago…..man that’s going to hit you any time now. You should have a great sleep tonight though. If you had not mentioned it, I would have figured you got back over the weekend |
| Jo Ann, Ohio |
June 17th, 2008 10:18 pm ET MaryBeth, You never know what Mother Nature has in store. It seems like no matter what you do she finds a way to thwart your efforts. |
| Minou, New York City |
June 17th, 2008 10:18 pm ET “I just landed a couple of hours ago” ??? |
| Jolene |
June 17th, 2008 10:18 pm ET Obama is really working hard to gain Michigan support. I found it funny that the crowd starting booing though. Like Candy Crowley said, he still has a lot of work to do here in Michigan. |
| Cynthia |
June 17th, 2008 10:19 pm ET I have seen rudeness on both sides of it and it is wrong either way. |
| Lou |
June 17th, 2008 10:19 pm ET Anderson, you look great for just having landed a couple of hours ago. At least Campbell is getting a much deserved break |
| MaryBeth |
June 17th, 2008 10:19 pm ET Cindy: it’s rude of Hillary supporters to say they are going to vote for McCain just because Obama is the candidate. Talk about being selfish. |
| Hannah Storm |
June 17th, 2008 10:19 pm ET Booing in general is not nice to a candidate but Clinton supporters are just as guilty of it as are Obama supporters |
| Shannon |
June 17th, 2008 10:19 pm ET Only some supporters booed and I agree it was completely rude. They certainly don’t represent the majority of us or Obama for that matter! |
| Mary H. St. Louis, MO |
June 17th, 2008 10:20 pm ET It is good to see Gary not standing in water above his waist. That truly demonstrated how bad it was but I was concerned Gary would get washed away. That water looked so dirty and gross. |
| sara. .minneapolis |
June 17th, 2008 10:20 pm ET I’m surprised this is the first time we’ve heard Obama supporters booing Hillary, considering how many, MANY times we’ve heard Hillary supporters booing Obama, or at most, being silent rather than cheering him when she praised him in her speech the last night of primaries. |
| Fay, CA |
June 17th, 2008 10:21 pm ET It’s pretty ridiculous for Obama and Clinton supporters to still be at each other’s throats–the Democratic Party needs to come together to defeat McCain in November. |
| Mike, Syracuse, NY |
June 17th, 2008 10:21 pm ET One would think that they would let the VP choice pick his or her own chief of staff. |
| MaryBeth |
June 17th, 2008 10:22 pm ET Jo Ann: I know. My parents were told they NEED flood insurance because they live in a flood plain…however the flood plain map doesn’t have elevation and show that they live on a 50 foot high hill and if THEY get flooded, the whole county would be under water. They had to fight FEMA to prove they live on a hill. Kind of ironic that the people who need flood insurance can’t get it and the people that don’t are forced to pay for it. |
| Kimether - Atlanta, GA |
June 17th, 2008 10:22 pm ET I’ve been loving Candy’s hair lately! Perhaps I’m too used to her reporting outside in twenty degree weather with 20mph wind gusts! |
| Sylvia - Canada |
June 17th, 2008 10:22 pm ET Jim, there is no shortage of oil. It’s speculators that are causing these prices. I live in Alberta, Canada and we all live right on top of the oil |
| EJ (USA) |
June 17th, 2008 10:23 pm ET When I hear about all that crazy weather in the midwest - I worry about being injured or having family members hurt. That’s what scares me the most. |
| Shannon |
June 17th, 2008 10:23 pm ET I really like Hillary Rosen!! She is great! I think she is right anyone that truly believes in the issues that Hillary Clinton has worked for during her career would find it unfathomable to vote for McCain |
| Lou |
June 17th, 2008 10:23 pm ET Mike, that is what I thought, that the VP nominee would pick their own chief of staff, |
| Billi |
June 17th, 2008 10:23 pm ET If Hillary was able to coalesce the “swing” voter women that Hillary Rosen just mentioned, then maybe she was better at getting those “independents” than Obama was. |
| Kimether - Atlanta, GA |
June 17th, 2008 10:24 pm ET Obama will gain the majority of women voters, period. McCain has not portrayed himself as someone who cares about women issues. |
| Mike, Syracuse, NY |
June 17th, 2008 10:24 pm ET MaryBeth, perhaps a lot of the Hillary supporters don’t think Obama is qualified. Party loyalty is fine to a point, but not when in your heart you know the candidate isn’t the right choice. |
CNN |
June 17th, 2008 10:24 pm ET hi, everyone - sorry i’m a little late to tonight’s blog party |
| Clyde |
June 17th, 2008 10:24 pm ET I find it hard to believe anybody could vote for John McCain after being a Clinton supporter. Is it better to vote for a non-ending “war” or vote for trying to repair all the social and finanical damage? McCain is just more Bush. |
| Jo Ann, Ohio |
June 17th, 2008 10:24 pm ET Mike, I have to agree. He or she may want to bring someone they are familiar with on board. I know I wouldn’t want my staff to be chosen by someone else. |
| Hannah Storm |
June 17th, 2008 10:25 pm ET oh hey Erica, I was just wondering if you were off tonight. Glad to see your in |
| Mike, Syracuse, NY |
June 17th, 2008 10:25 pm ET Candy is right. Hillary doesn’t owe it to Obama to deliver her 18 million voters; he has to earn them. |
| Lou |
June 17th, 2008 10:25 pm ET Slyvia- I too am from Canada and we do sit right on top of the oil, but that oil is sold on world markets and so we pay the same or more |
| Jacqui Chan |
June 17th, 2008 10:25 pm ET I think we need to move away from oil and which enables the taliban and move toward environmentally friendly car which run on vegetable oil or no oil at all |
| Billi |
June 17th, 2008 10:25 pm ET Hillary is showing up at the fundraiser but is it certain that the fundraisers are showing up? Does Candy know if they are? Aren’t there some Hillary supporters who have not yet decided to do that? |
| Shannon |
June 17th, 2008 10:26 pm ET JoAnn and Mike, Chief of Staff’s for V.P.’s are always chosen by the campaign and not the individual. |
| La Mar |
June 17th, 2008 10:27 pm ET I am a Obama supporter but i think it was a grave mistake to bring on a former chief of staff from the clinton camp since she was let go ,to much bad blood. |
| MaryBeth |
June 17th, 2008 10:27 pm ET If Obama is smart he will do what Lincoln did. Lincoln wasn’t “qualified” either. Lincoln surrounded himself with people he knew didn’t like him or disagreed with him and were not afraid to tell truth to power. That’s what Obama is going to need the most. |
| Clyde |
June 17th, 2008 10:28 pm ET Great–instead of working on solving the discrepancies in our energy and fuel policies, let’s just cover it up by drilling for more. Don’t worry about the future–just let our kids handle it when it’s their turn. |
| Mike, Syracuse, NY |
June 17th, 2008 10:28 pm ET How can raising taxes on the oil companies lower our gas prices by one cent? They’ll just raise the price to get their profits back. |
| Mechelle-- Oklahoma |
June 17th, 2008 10:29 pm ET Moving toward enviromentally friendly vehicles is easier said than done. I like in southeast Oklahoma and the closest place to purchase bio or flex fuel is in Missouri. For those of us who live in rural areas and own older vehicles, it will be difficult. I wish there was an easier way. |
| Kimether - Atlanta, GA |
June 17th, 2008 10:29 pm ET McCain camp probably think they have had an epiphany when they decided they will flip Obama’s “old politics” platform by comparing Obama with Jimmy Carter. One issue: Carter did not have the horrible approval rating that Bush has! |
| Shannon |
June 17th, 2008 10:29 pm ET I think it is interesting that McCain has flip flopped on off-shore drilling and windfall profit taxes on the same day that he has a huge fundraiser with Houston Oil Billionaires. |
| Stacy |
June 17th, 2008 10:29 pm ET Hm, seems McCain has been doing a little flip-flopping. |
| Cindy |
June 17th, 2008 10:29 pm ET I think they need to lift the ban on offshore drilling. If not someone else like Cuba will do it, find the oil then charge us for it. Cindy…Ga. |
| Megan Dresslar |
June 17th, 2008 10:30 pm ET I was surprised that McCain said that Oil drilling lift ban today. |
| mollie |
June 17th, 2008 10:30 pm ET did anderson just say BUSH wants to lift the ban on offshore drilling? |
| Jo Ann, Ohio |
June 17th, 2008 10:30 pm ET Big mistake! Why do they think that they can drill their way out of this mess? How will this lower the price of gas? The oil companies will just find another reason to raise the prices again to protect their outrageous profit margin. |
| Christina, Windber, PA |
June 17th, 2008 10:30 pm ET I hate the idea of drilling offshore or in the Arctic Refuge. Does anyone remember the mess after Katrina. Hurricanes are common in these offshore areas and it’s no place for drilling rigs. Once and for all we need to learn how to conserve and protect all our natural resources. We failed to do it before, this time we have to. |
| Missy |
June 17th, 2008 10:31 pm ET Maybe Hillary doesn’t owe it to Obama to deliver her 18 million voters, but doesn’t she want him to win the general election? However, I do agree, he has to earn them. |
| Mike, Syracuse, NY |
June 17th, 2008 10:32 pm ET The situation today is different than just a year ago. Gas prices are much higher and still going up. The solution is a family of answers that include alternative energy, nuclear power, and yes, increasing oil production in the short term. |
| Gary |
June 17th, 2008 10:32 pm ET Gasoline in OPEC countries is less than a dollar. McCain realizes that supply is necessary. Obama is stuck on democratic positions. |
| Clyde |
June 17th, 2008 10:33 pm ET Just because someone’s been around longer doesn’t make them an expert (McCain). In fact, it’s old-world thinking that’s gotten us into the mess we (and the entire world) is in. New thinking is required. |
| Stacy |
June 17th, 2008 10:33 pm ET Cindy, oil is finite and it’s running out. We need to move towards alternative energy–not prolong our oil addiction by lifting the ban. |
| kenneth torto |
June 17th, 2008 10:34 pm ET Is so unfortunate that such a powerful nation like ours and yet after Katrina and levee breaches, we have failed again to seize on that opportunity to check our other levees at several other parts of the nation and here we are again with another levee breach. Consequences unknown. It hurt so bad, soo so bad I bow down in tears. |
| Mike, Syracuse, NY |
June 17th, 2008 10:34 pm ET I’ve yet to hear any useful energy suggestions from Obama. All he does is attack McCain’s ideas without offering any of his own besides raise taxes. |
| Cindy |
June 17th, 2008 10:34 pm ET Changing Michelle’s look, and attitude won’t change my views of her. Cindy…Ga. |
| Shannon |
June 17th, 2008 10:35 pm ET McCain is pandering. The earliest that off-shore oil would be available in amounts necessary to lower demand would be in the minimum five years. |
| Gary |
June 17th, 2008 10:35 pm ET I live in Texas. There were no problems with the oil rigs in the gulf during or after Katrina or Rita. |
| Susan - North Haven, CT |
June 17th, 2008 10:36 pm ET Michelle Obama is NO JACKIE O. |
| Cynthia |
June 17th, 2008 10:36 pm ET I see it as confidence and most view it as arrogrance. |
| Maryann, Brooklyn, NY |
June 17th, 2008 10:36 pm ET I really do hope Michelle Obama is genuine and stays the course through this campaign and more importantly stays true to herself. |
| Shannon |
June 17th, 2008 10:36 pm ET I am impressed with Michelle, it is sad that the Republican’s will try to do with her what they did to Hillary when Bill ran in 1992 |
| MaryBeth |
June 17th, 2008 10:37 pm ET Why do first ladies have to be so quiet and meek? What’s wrong with a strong independent woman? |
| Mike, Syracuse, NY |
June 17th, 2008 10:37 pm ET Shannon, do you see gas prices dropping significantly over the next five years? If we don’t start now, we will never see relief. |

June 17th, 2008 10:37 pm ET I really don’t think the issue of off-shore drilling is going to be of extreme importance come November. |

June 17th, 2008 10:37 pm ET ha ha cartoon character on pearls……….wilma flintstone |

| Jolene |
June 17th, 2008 10:37 pm ET So Michelle Obama showing her strength and appearing as a fighter is how different than what Hillary did? |
| Tracey - Boston |
June 17th, 2008 10:37 pm ET Susan… it’s the style that is similar!!!! |
| Jo Ann, Ohio |
June 17th, 2008 10:38 pm ET Although I know it happens all of the time, I am suspicious of makeovers. It makes people look less than genuine and I don’t like or respect phonies. |
| kathy |
June 17th, 2008 10:38 pm ET susan |
| Stacy |
June 17th, 2008 10:38 pm ET I can relate better to M. Obama than L. Bush. I’d rather the first lady speak her mind. |
| Claire |
June 17th, 2008 10:38 pm ET I agree MaryBeth. I’ve been wondering the same thing. |
| Tracey - Boston |
June 17th, 2008 10:39 pm ET Wilma Flintstone That was funny |
| Hannah Storm |
June 17th, 2008 10:39 pm ET I think Michelle is one of the best dressed people out there right now. She does not need a stylist |
| Cynthia |
June 17th, 2008 10:39 pm ET Jolene there is no difference. |
| Shannon |
June 17th, 2008 10:39 pm ET I love Michelle’s clothing, why would she need a stylist |
| Travis, Charlottesville, VA |
June 17th, 2008 10:40 pm ET I don’t think that the Michelle will take the traditional role of a first lady, the same way that Hillary was not the traditional first lady. |
| Cynthia |
June 17th, 2008 10:40 pm ET Those of you that say that she is no Jackie O - I wonder why you think not? |
| Kimether - Atlanta, GA |
June 17th, 2008 10:40 pm ET Michelle Obama is MY Jackie-O. |
| kim-chicago |
June 17th, 2008 10:40 pm ET Michelle Obama is MICHELLE OBAMA not just a stand by your man kind of woman…I think she is a breath of fresh air!! |
| Jo Ann, Ohio |
June 17th, 2008 10:40 pm ET The purpose of a makeover is to try to fool people into thinking that you are something that you are not. |
| Jolene |
June 17th, 2008 10:41 pm ET Well, it’s 2008, I don’t think potential First Ladies today need to be compared to First Ladies of yesteryear. Women have changed from the Jackie O. days. |

June 17th, 2008 10:41 pm ET Oh boy! I hope FBI and Police will look for him to catch, and will take him custody……. |

| Marie Rose |
June 17th, 2008 10:41 pm ET I was starting to listen to Obama’s speeches and was trying to have an open mind (I voted for Hillary), but his supporters booing at the mention of Hillary Clinton was a serious turn off. Maryland always goes to the dems, so if this keeps up, I think I will just not vote in November. I imagine some conservative dems might be willing to vote for McCain, so I think it’s less far fetched than some of the commentators want people to believe. PS - Candy and Anderson, you guys look great tonight! |
| MaryBeth |
June 17th, 2008 10:41 pm ET Jo Ann: I agree. I think she looks fine. But they did the same thing to Hillary. She was very outspoken in the beginning (Bill’s first term) and then they quieted her down. |
| Sahira |
June 17th, 2008 10:41 pm ET There is no way you can compare Michelle Obama with Jackie Kennedy. Jackie Kennedy was very elegant and classy looking. From tapes I’ve seen and heard, she was also very soft spoken. |
| Christina, Windber, PA |
June 17th, 2008 10:41 pm ET I think there’s no comparison between Michelle Obama and Jackie Kennedy. |
| Max, Dallas, TX |
June 17th, 2008 10:42 pm ET Michelle is an amazing woman. I think all this talk of a “makeover” is unfair. If there is any force to make her a docile, shrunken slip of a thing the media often portrays women to be, I have confidence that she will rightfully fight it. She knows who she is and deserves an untampered platform to clue us all in. |
| Gary |
June 17th, 2008 10:42 pm ET Anderson…she is not the first lady YET. |
| La Mar |
June 17th, 2008 10:42 pm ET Lifting the ban on off shore drilling wowwwww George McCain |

June 17th, 2008 10:43 pm ET Roland is absolutely right! Society has trouble with strong women. |
| Cindy |
June 17th, 2008 10:43 pm ET I agree with Roland…men can’t deal with M. Obama’s strength. Cindy..Ga. |
| Lorie Ann, Buellton, California |
June 17th, 2008 10:43 pm ET I think if Michelle Obama becomes first lady, she should flat out declare there will be no makeover. I don’t think this has anything to do with race. |
| Kimether - Atlanta, GA |
June 17th, 2008 10:43 pm ET Independent black women are traditiionally viewed as angry. This is not a new stereotype. Those who know that will not be fooled by the right wingers. |
| MaryBeth |
June 17th, 2008 10:43 pm ET Go Roland!!! I love him!!! He’s so plain spoken!!! “Angry black woman” indeed. How about a 21st Century Woman!!! Wow!!! Michelle looks AWESOME in that teal strapless corset dress!!! |
| kathy |
June 17th, 2008 10:43 pm ET she is angry,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,rolland WHY do you always have to say black i am really sick of this BLACK stuff |
| Robin |
June 17th, 2008 10:44 pm ET I totally agree with with Roland Martin!! |
| Mechelle-- Oklahoma |
June 17th, 2008 10:44 pm ET I agree with Roland. Both potential first ladies are more outspoken than we are used to. Why all this fuss about Michelle Obama and there is nothing really said about Cindy McCain? |
| Jo Ann, Ohio |
June 17th, 2008 10:44 pm ET I don’t think this is about race. Look at the nasty things that were said about Hillary Clinton when Bill Clinton was running for office. |
| Susan - North Haven, CT |
June 17th, 2008 10:44 pm ET Michelle comes off as a fake to me. She, like her husband, loves to hear herself talk - conceded and arrogant. She’s not someone I would want to be friends with. |
| Janice |
June 17th, 2008 10:44 pm ET It makes me sick to hear MO compared to J. Kennedy. No comparison. I can’t even imagine her in the White House. |
CNN |
June 17th, 2008 10:44 pm ET how impt is a first lady to you when you vote for president? does a candidate’s spouse affect your view of that person as a potential president? how much influence do you think first ladies have? |
| CaseyJPS - California |
June 17th, 2008 10:44 pm ET JoAnn- In this case, I would say the makeover is so she “fits” a pre-conceived notion of what a first-lady should be. |
| kathy |
June 17th, 2008 10:45 pm ET gary you are right she is not yet the first lady hopefully she wont be |
| Jolene |
June 17th, 2008 10:45 pm ET Obama gets accused of being “elite” so why would they want to spiff up Michelle so much….so she can be accused of being elite too? |
| Julie |
June 17th, 2008 10:45 pm ET I think that Michelle Obama is a classy lady, regardless of the party. Welcome to the good old boys club Michelle! It is gratifying as a woman to see a strong female role model. |
| Greg |
June 17th, 2008 10:46 pm ET She showed here true colors at the beginning of the presidential race. |
| Clyde |
June 17th, 2008 10:46 pm ET The First Lady (or spouse) is extremely important. In many ways they directly reflect the views of the President. There wouldn’t be a marriage if there weren’t similar values to begin with. |
| Mike, Syracuse, NY |
June 17th, 2008 10:46 pm ET If Michelle Obama plays the traditional role that’s fine. If she is proactive and speaks up that’s fine too. But if she does the later, she’s fair game to be hammered for what she says. |
| kathy |
June 17th, 2008 10:47 pm ET erica |
| Lou |
June 17th, 2008 10:47 pm ET I think that first ladies have alot of influence. After all they are the ones closest to the President. |
| Tracey - Boston |
June 17th, 2008 10:47 pm ET Erica I don’t think it should sway how a person votes…there is no real power for the first lady…it doesn’t matter. |
| Megan Dresslar |
June 17th, 2008 10:47 pm ET I agree with bloggers and Roland too |
| CaseyJPS - California |
June 17th, 2008 10:47 pm ET Any potential First-Lady and President couldn’t get this far down the road without seeing eye-to-eye on many of the most important issues. They would have to have similar values, just to start with. |
| Claire |
June 17th, 2008 10:47 pm ET Society today has changed. Woman aren’t just baking cookies and “standing by their man”. Woman are allowed to be their own person now and the First Lady should be allowed to be who they are and not a typical 50’s house wife. |
| Francesca Elm |
June 17th, 2008 10:47 pm ET First ladies don’t affect my vote, I don’t think most people vote against a candidate because of their wife. But then again people didn’t vote for Howard Dean because he let out a yell |
| Marie Rose; Maryland |
June 17th, 2008 10:47 pm ET To answer Erica, the spouse of the candidate has no impact on my vote. |
| Bianca |
June 17th, 2008 10:47 pm ET Michelle Obama’s pearls strangely remind me Wilma from the Flintstones… |
| Sara, Oklahoma |
June 17th, 2008 10:47 pm ET Exactly! Obama is a bi-racial man. Not black. He is half. That is why I do not understand why this campaign has had so many problems about race. Its 2008 folks, time to see past color. |
| Jacqui Chan |
June 17th, 2008 10:48 pm ET good point, Roland and Barack himself are the only people who I have heard refer to Barack as bi-racial, not black |
| Jolene |
June 17th, 2008 10:48 pm ET Erica: The First Lady can have an influence on the President so they are fair game and it will matter. |
| Kimether - Atlanta, GA |
June 17th, 2008 10:49 pm ET A candidate’s spouse does have the power to influence people’s voting decision. It’s easer for them to hurt their spouse’s campaign than help. Michelle is doing a great job thus far. Like Bill, she can really work those small group events very well, despite having some negativity thrown her way on the larger media scale. |
| Megan Dresslar |
June 17th, 2008 10:49 pm ET I agree with you Gary, |
| Jim |
June 17th, 2008 10:49 pm ET Erica, I could care less about the first spouse when it comes to whom I am going to vote for. All that matters is the critical issues - Energy policy, the national debt, etc. |
| Sahira |
June 17th, 2008 10:49 pm ET Roland, There is difference being strong and being arrogant or obnoxious. |
| Mike, Syracuse, NY |
June 17th, 2008 10:49 pm ET Erica, first ladies have a HUGE influence. They are the ones that get the last word every night. |
| Maryann, Brooklyn, NY |
June 17th, 2008 10:49 pm ET Hey Erica, for me, I didn’t think it mattered much until now; someone like Michelle Obama, I think could make a real difference: not only contribute to the “presidency” but maybe tackle some critical issues all on her own…. |
| Jana, Indiana |
June 17th, 2008 10:49 pm ET Good night all bloggers and Anderson. Glad you made it back safely. Good show tonight. |
| MaryBeth |
June 17th, 2008 10:50 pm ET They actually dumbed down Jackie O. She was a lot smarter than they let on. She was a strong woman, but they downplayed that because that is not what a presidential wife should be. She should be the proto-typical housewife (read trophy wife). That’s all for me. I have to get up at 4am tomorrow. See you all tomorrow night! |
| Lou |
June 17th, 2008 10:50 pm ET Sara, I could not agree with you more |
| Jo Ann, Ohio |
June 17th, 2008 10:50 pm ET CaseyJPS - California; I agree, but I don’t think it is right. It is not fair to strip away someone’s authenticity to serve a purpose, nor is it fair to the people they are trying to fool. |
| Janna |
June 17th, 2008 10:50 pm ET Erica, personally I don’t think it has any effect on an election’s outcome. The first spouse is a cheerleader, not a decision maker. |
| Cindy |
June 17th, 2008 10:51 pm ET I knew Samuel wasn’t dead!! I hope that they catch him soon! Cindy..Ga. |
| Susan - North Haven, CT |
June 17th, 2008 10:51 pm ET ERICA - First ladies can make or break the likeablility of a potential president. |
| La Mar |
June 17th, 2008 10:51 pm ET Why the comparison why not compare her to Barbera Busch ? |
| Jana, Indiana |
June 17th, 2008 10:52 pm ET Good night all bloggers and Anderson. Glad you made it back safely. Good show tonight. |
| CaseyJPS - California |
June 17th, 2008 10:52 pm ET Sara, Oklahoma-That’s a good point and I’m glad you reminded me. With all the racial focus I had forgotten Obama is bi-racial, which makes most of the conversation and debate irrelevant, don’t you think? |
| kim-chicago |
June 17th, 2008 10:53 pm ET For me it is important to see that Barack Obama treats his wife as an equal. I feel they have a great deal of respect for one another. It seems like an intelligent, caring relationship and I think she is a great role model for those two girls. |
| Jacqui Chan |
June 17th, 2008 10:53 pm ET so obviously fake what a convenient time to decide to kill oneself and leave no evidence |

June 17th, 2008 10:54 pm ET I knew that guy wasnt dead. I knew it. Hes too smart for that. He loves to be in control and have the freedom to do as he pleases. He has to have money somewhere hidden. He helped the feds to keep tabs on them while he was busy planning his getaway. |

June 17th, 2008 10:54 pm ET JoAnn, Ohio> |
| Jo Ann, Ohio |
June 17th, 2008 10:54 pm ET Erica, I think the only reason people pay attention to a spouse is because it says something about the judgment of the person doing the choosing. The selection of a life partner is one of the most important choices anyone can make. Saying that, I don’t think first ladies have much influence. |
| Mary H. St. Louis, MO |
June 17th, 2008 10:54 pm ET Good show tonight. AC, great to have you back in the studio. Get some rest. The blog party is over for tonight… |
