Campbell, your tribute to Tim Russert at the end of your program this evening was very touching. Thank you. What a great loss this is.

Hannah Storm   June 13th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

The sudden passing of Tim Russert is just shocking. I was watching CNN.com LIVE at work when the news broke and I literally said Oh my god. Although I was not a regular viewer of Meet the Press, I knew who Tim was and respected him for his work. He truly was a huge voice in political news and he will be greatly missed.

My thoughts and prayers go to Maureen, Luke and Big Russ along with the entire Russert family.

Jolene   June 13th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Hi bloggers! Such a depressing day. Tim Russert was truly respected in the business and will be missed by all. CNN has been doing an excellent job remembering him.

Megan Dresslar,   June 13th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Hello Campbell, Erica, and Bloggers!!
I am so sad and shocked Tim Russert pass away tonight, He was my favorite anchor.........

Cindy   June 13th, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Hey Campbell...glad you are back.

It is so extremely sad to hear of Tim's passing. He was a great journalists and a great man. He'll be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Minou, New York City   June 13th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Campbell, at the end of your show, you brought tears to my eyes.
My deepest condolences to you and to everyone who knew him and loved him.
What a loss.

Jolene   June 13th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Campbell, I too watched the end of your program tonight and your tribute Tim Russert . I would have sent your show an email but I couldn’t find a link. Tim writing a letter to your newborn son was very touching to me. Your words brought tears to my eye. I’m sure you will treasure that letter forever. Thanks for sharing.

sara. .minneapolis   June 13th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Megan, you liked him more than Anderson?!

Seriously though, it's so surprising and sad that Tim passed away so suddendly like this. I'll always remember him with that whiteboard that crazy night in 2000.

EJ (USA)   June 13th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

It would be interesting to hear what many other reporters think on the workaholic aspect of this story. I wonder how they handle that intense type of stress and the few hours of sleep – especially in an election year like this one.

Megan Dresslar,   June 13th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

My hearts go to Tim Russert's family and NBC crew............Thanks Cnn doing great job to remembering him....

Gary   June 13th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Tim Russert was a fair journalist. He came from the Democrat party but unlike others he was able to put aside his politics and be a true journalist. He will be missed.

Jo Ann, Ohio   June 13th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Campbell, Your tribute to Tim Russert was beautiful! He was a truly gifted and dedicated journalist! Those of us from the Cleveland area were always proud to know that Tim attended John Carroll University here. He can never be replaced.

Tracey - Boston   June 13th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Campbell,

Your composure is outstanding...

Hannah Storm   June 13th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

It is amazing that with all the work Tim and Wolf did they had time to go to Wizards games......so many great stories and memories of Tim have been shared tonight

Megan Dresslar,   June 13th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Yes, I do I like him as more Anderson........ Sara......

Kathy, Chicago   June 13th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

I only started to watch Mr Russert during these Democratic Primaries. I enjoyed channel surfing Sunday mornings and looked forward to his guests, questions and integrity. He always presented things a different way, but always an honest way. he has been taken in the prime of his life and will truely be missed.

Jolene   June 13th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Tim was a big Notre Dame fan too. He would often visit South Bend, IN and go to their games. Very committed to his religion also.

Tracey - Boston   June 13th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Listening to Ted Koppel talking about Mr. Russert's schedule...I thought of Anderson and his lack of being about to relax. it is bothersome.

Joe Klimchak   June 13th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Ten years ago, while in my late twenties, I met Tim at a golf course while vacationing in Nantucket. I approached him to let him know how much I appreciated and admired his work and added that I had met him previously at the 1994 All Star Game in Pittsburgh. His face lit up and he began talking to me with such an openess and interest you would have thought that I was the celebrity. Never before have I met anyone as kind, professional, engaging and grounded as Tim Russert. His family is in my prayers.

Steve Boyd   June 13th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Campbell, if this is not published, I hope, at least you will read it. I haven’t always agreed with the way that you present things, but I must say, that [your final comments on the Election Center] was absolutely breath taking, and heartbreaking at the same time.

I know that you had to dig very deep to get those words out, it was visibly hard, but you got it done. Your message was clearly stated and vastly received. From a journalistic perspective, you really humanized yourself tonight, and also showed how well Tim Russett taught you.

He was obviously a mentor, a friend and a trusted colleague of yours and many others. Everything you said was from the heart, and left me speechless. You should be proud of yourself, as I am sure Tim is.

Farewell to a Great Journalist, and a Greater Man.

Steve, A Sad Canadian Tonight.

Hannah Storm   June 13th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

I heard on one of the networks that Tim got to meet with the Pope while in Rome this week.....as someone who so loved their religion it is nice it got to do that again before today

Megan Dresslar   June 13th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Can I ask a question for doctor? is really massive heart attack really fatal?

Erica Hill
CNN
  June 13th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

hi, everyone - thanks for blogging tonight.
it is a very sad day.

Cindy   June 13th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

@ Tracey-Boston..I thought the same thing. Anderson needs to take time off big time before his working too much takes its toll on him.

Cindy...Ga.

Jana, Indiana   June 13th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Tracy, I too, have been thinking of Anderson and his hectic schedule today and the way he and others don't slow down. Life is to short for all of us.

Campbell I saw your piece at the end of your show. You did a great job in telling your feelings about Tim.

Jolene   June 13th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Nice story, Wolf, about you and Tim meeting the Pope. I would probably act like a kid if I ever got the chance to meet the Pope too!

Megan Dresslar   June 13th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Joe,
You're so lucky today........ you met Tim at golf place...... that is so great!

Hannah Storm   June 13th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Hey Erica.....indeed a sad day.

Did you ever have an opportunity to meet Tim out and about in the media circles?

Jo Ann, Ohio   June 13th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

"Big Russ" was a wonderful book! It truly revealed Tim to be not only a dedicated journalist and a loving family man, but also someone who remembered his working class roots and never thought himself to be above others. He was an extremely decent human being.

Karen Ohio   June 13th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

I heard about Tim's passing on the radio on the way home from work and couldn't believe it. I watched your show earlier Campbell and was moved by moved by your words at the end. He must have been a wonderful person to have known. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

Megan Dresslar   June 13th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Hi Erica,
I agree, that is so sad day for us...... we will never forget him forever again.

Renee   June 13th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

TR – Another wonderful man who left two books. Makes you want to get writing more down on paper.

Mike, Syracuse, NY   June 13th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

He showed an impartiality that seems to be hard to find these days. I didn't realize his earlier political background until all the coverage today.

Ken in NC   June 13th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Good evening Campbell. I am deeply saddened at the death of Tim Russert. Tonight will be another of sad news but I'm sure he would want all to go on as he did each and every day. I watched Meet The Press almost every Sunday . He will be missed. Our prayers are with you all and with his family in this time of loss.

Mike, Syracuse, NY   June 13th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

That's really scary, that you can have a normal stress test and then drop dead an hour later.

Tracey - Boston   June 13th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

I'm sorry...did the Dr. say the did an autopsy already or this diagnosis is based on a previous patient???

Susan - North Haven, CT   June 13th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

There are no words to express the loss of Tim Russert... it's unthinkable that this man will not be here for this year's election.

I will pray for his family, his colleagues, and for all of those who knew him personally. It's so sad.

Megan Dresslar   June 13th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Yes, Mike in NY....
That's true........ really hard time to stress.... very scary for me.....

tony   June 13th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

I echo Jana and Tracey's thoughts....I hope Anderson, Erica, Wolf, Campbell, and others are taking care of themselves, especially during this crazy and hectic campaign season.

Sunday mornings will not be the same....May Tim Russert rest in peace among the angels.

Renee   June 13th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Campbell, it was nice your son received a beautiful letter from Tim upon his birth. That was a nice story on LK tonight.

Gary   June 13th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Mike, indeed, his impartiality was a hallmark of his journalism. I think it was because of his early training. In the old days, journalists believed in a code of ethics. They reported the news and did not create the news. Russert was excelllent at asking questions which were designed to get the information and not distort it.

Mike, Syracuse, NY   June 13th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

I'm sure you could have never gotten him to slow down, as he was doing what he loved.

Jolene   June 13th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Boy, it was hard hearing the Doctor describe what happened to Tim. He's in God's hands now.

Hannah Storm   June 13th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Campbell you are doing a great job, we can hear the emotion in your voice but you are keeping it together so well

EJ (USA)   June 13th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

There are no words to express the loss of Tim Russert… it’s unthinkable that this man will not be here for this year’s election.

I liked the way David Bloom's widow put it earlier - that Tim now already knows how this election will turn out – and his loved ones can find some comfort in that. Bloom's passing (due to a pulmonary embolism) 5 years ago shocked me too – not long after the war started.

Mike, Syracuse, NY   June 13th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

Gary, it's a very small group. When can you listen to a reporter and have 100% confidence in what he or she says? Walter Cronkite had the same credibility.

Minou, New York City   June 13th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

Oh, that makes me so sad! His father survives him! A parent should never have to live through their own child's death! How sad.

Tracey - Boston   June 13th, 2008 10:24 pm ET

@Hannah

You can see it in her eyes as well...looks like she is going to flow like Niagara Falls

Jolene   June 13th, 2008 10:24 pm ET

I think Tim's death is starting to hit home with most of us. Hang in their Campbell, you are doing great tonight!

Bren from Atlanta   June 13th, 2008 10:24 pm ET

My sincere condolences to the family and friends and colleagues of Mr. Russert. His honest, down-to-earth, where the rubber meets the road integrity was the hallmark of his career in broadcasting. His legacy of holding the steely truth as his banner will live long in the hearts of his comrades and especially his family. I pray for especially for his son and his father going into this Father's Day weekend. Also for those who will carry the banner of truth going forward... Anderson...I'm so thankful for men such as yourself, who will get the truth for us and present it for what it is, not matter what..."where the rubber meets the road"...for that is what Tim's legacy truly is.

Megan Dresslar   June 13th, 2008 10:24 pm ET

Yes, Hannah........
Campbell, I know you and Tim were best friends, I hear you feel hard time lost your friend too emotion for you.....

Renee   June 13th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

Minou, did you see the story that Tim did on "Big Russ" on NBC? They showed it again tonight and it was a real teary one.

Steve Boyd   June 13th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

Erica, you are right, it is a sad day. You know, you folks have some of the hardest job on the planet. They say that it is difficult for policians during campaigns because everything they say adn do is srutinized. Well, many of you folks in the journalistic community live such a life year around in many cases days at a time with little in the way of rest. It isn't easy for politicians, and it can't be easy for any of you.

I make this point to accentuate just what a difficult job Tim had, yet how well he did it. His personal views were virtually invisible, he was a tiger, but a fair one, and he passed his expertise on to all those that he could.

The degree of professionalism and integrity he showed is matched only by the out pouring if acknowledgement he has received today.

Let's all try and believe that he has heard every word, and said, thank you, and good night.

We, the followers, have all suffered a loss today. But. let me offer my sorrow for your loss, to journalists everywhere.

Steve, Canada

Linda, Los Angeles   June 13th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

My heart goes out to the Russert family. This news is just so sad and heartbreaking. He is one of the people who has made me interested in politics. Meet the Press is one of my TIVO favorites. Always curious as to what the topic of the morning will be.

He will be greatly missed.

Hannah Storm   June 13th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

@ Tracey – your right and on the webcam when she is not on air she is just sitting still, almost reflective

Megan Dresslar   June 13th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

EJ USA
I remember David Bloom so well on tv 5 years ago....... he was best reporter in the world......

Jana, Indiana   June 13th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

Mike, You are right, there is a small group, Tim, Walter Cronkite and I think you can put Anderson in that same group that has credibility

Mary, Tooele County, Utah   June 13th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

I was shocked and moved to tears when I heard about Tim. He has been a role model for me both professionally and as a Catholic. It is frightening to think that such a vibrant person could go so quickly with no warning. Peace be with Tim and the family he loved so deeply.

Susan - North Haven, CT   June 13th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

It's my understanding that Tim DID take care of himself. I heard Keith Olberman speaking earlier about Tim having passed a stress test with "flying colors" on April 29th, and had just worked out on his treadmill this morning.

I think today, for as sad it is, was God's will.

Renee   June 13th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

If anyone is looking for a Father's Day gift this weekend, I would highly recommend both of Tim's books. They are both wonderful.

If your Dad is gone like mine, both are wonderful books to bring back good, fun memories.

Megan Dresslar   June 13th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

Mike in NY,
i agree.... never forgot him forever long time......

Kayle   June 13th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

This is news that is just unbelievable. Tim was one of the most talented men of our time, struck down in his prime. It feels like Sunday morning I'll wake up, turn on the tv and he'll be there.

Lilibeth   June 13th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

I don't know him personally, but it feels as though I'm losing a friend. He just seemed so nice, so genuine, so humble...just a really nice guy. That's what I liked about Mr. Russert. I will truly miss him.

Susan - North Haven, CT   June 13th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

EJ USA – David Bloom... I cried for a week when he passed away.

I hadn't thought about Tim now knowing who wins the election! Larry King was supposed to have John Edwards on his show last night... don't know what happened. But anyway – Larry should get Edwards rebooked ASAP so Tim can channel through and tell us what's going to happen!

Jolene   June 13th, 2008 10:38 pm ET

Wow, looking at the map, looks like AC and 360 crew have been jumping all over Africa. They must be exhausted.

Megan Dresslar   June 13th, 2008 10:38 pm ET

Yes, Kayle.....
I agree with you........ I always watch tim'a show each Sunday morning... it struck me most inspires.......

Cindy   June 13th, 2008 10:39 pm ET

That was a great report from Anderson. Can't wait to see the next on Monday!

Cindy...Ga.

Jo Ann, Ohio   June 13th, 2008 10:39 pm ET

Jana, I agree with you on both counts. This campaign season seems to be much more stressful than others and I hope that Anderson will allow some quality time for himself.

I also agree that Anderson has the potential to be considered one of the best in journalism.

EJ (USA)   June 13th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

I just love Anderson. I think many of us started to worry (more) about him when we heard about Tim's passing today.

Erica Hill
CNN
  June 13th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

Lilbeth, I think many people feel that way. I never had the privilege of meeting him, but I so enjoyed watching him.

The love, admiration and respect so many share for him is a testament to the man tim russert was. what an incredible example he set for his son, and for so many others.

Hannah Storm   June 13th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

no wonder we have not seen Anderson since Monday....he has been going all around Africa.....no time to stop

Mike, Syracuse, NY   June 13th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

I didn't realize that they traced the HIV virus all the way back to the very first infection. What's still in the jungle waiting to come out?

Jack   June 13th, 2008 10:41 pm ET

Good evening!
Good work on paying homage to Tim Russert...., well done and touching!
Jack

Missy   June 13th, 2008 10:41 pm ET

It sounds like Anderson will still be over there next week as well? Great report. Nice to have an update.

Gary   June 13th, 2008 10:41 pm ET

Mike, Russert was also very good at moderating political debates. He allowed the participants to express themselves and he did so with respect.

Megan Dresslar   June 13th, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Cool!!!!! I miss Anderson so much...... he is doing great!!!! excellent job in Africa...... I agree with you Jolene, I know AC really tired his trip.......

Jo Ann, Ohio   June 13th, 2008 10:42 pm ET

They don't "think" this virus can be transmitted from person to person, but Anderson is standing there without gloves or a mask!

Cheryl Wade, Rialto, CA   June 13th, 2008 10:43 pm ET

At work today, before I learned of the death of Tim Russert, I was thinking about him. With Father's Day fast approaching, I always look forward to Tim's show on that day because he always acknowledged his dad and the influence his dad had on his life, but he also always, always, acknowledged his own kids and said 'I love being your dad'. Oh, my, how I will miss hearing that this Father's Day.

Minou, New York City   June 13th, 2008 10:44 pm ET

The businesses that suffer from this flood will have a rough time. What will they do?

Cindy   June 13th, 2008 10:44 pm ET

It is so sad that all of those people in Iowa are losing everything to the flooding. I hope it stops soon.

Gary goes anywhere doesn't he? LOL

Cindy..Ga.

Jolene   June 13th, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Gary Tuchman, you are crazy wading in that water! But, your dedication is appreciated.

Bindu   June 13th, 2008 10:45 pm ET

Gary, please stay away from water. You never know if there are any broken power lines in the water, and the last thing we want today is another shocker! We love you very much Gary, so please for all your viewers sake, be more sensible and get out of the water!

Bindu   June 13th, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Being a journalism major, Tim Russert is almost god like for people like me. When I got a pop up this afternoon about the breaking news, I just could not believe what I had just read. I kept going back and forth between different websites and it has just begin to sink in and its very painful. I cannot imagine a Sunday morning without Mr. Russert on my TV. He is the true journalist they talk about in Journalism class – objective, to the point, clear, well prepared and always worked to bring the truth to light! You will live as a legend Mr. Russert. We will greatly miss you! There will never be anyone that can replace you! RIP! My thoughts and prayers are with you family! If its so difficult for people like me to whom you became family through TV, I can only imagine what must be going through them that had the honor to share their lives with you.

Jana, Indiana   June 13th, 2008 10:46 pm ET

I hope Gary takes percautions when he is walking in that fast moving water and stays safe.

Denzel   June 13th, 2008 10:47 pm ET

Campbell its hard to watch you this evening, because I see you have just lost a close friend. We all are feeling the loss of tim,and the love of politics he brought to all of us everyday.I know you will always cheerish that Hand written note, that he wrote too your son.We will never forget him.Amen

Jo Ann, Ohio   June 13th, 2008 10:48 pm ET

Another excellent report by Gary! I can't believe how high that water is! I am not surprised to see that Gary's rebellious nature is giving the cops headaches.

Minou, New York City   June 13th, 2008 10:48 pm ET

Jo Ann, I agree. It's not smart to be so close to victims of an unknown virus. If they don't know how it's transmitted, Anderson and folks should not be near the sick . Not just because they can become sick, but also because they can bring the virus back to the US....who knows what the incubation time is on some of those viruses, you know?

Megan Dresslar   June 13th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Lilibeth and Gary,
I agree both of you too. you're right about that too, he was best moderating political debates.
I don't know personally Tim well, just I only watch on tv in my life.....

Jolene   June 13th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Oh, I just saw the promo for Monday's PIP report! I hope the report is as exciting as the promo indicates.

Kathy, Chicago   June 13th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Campbell, I didn't realize that you were so close To Tim. I am so sorry for your loss. Thanks for going on tonight.

Jo Ann, Ohio   June 13th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Jana, Have you ever known Gary to be cautious? Not if it gets in the way of bringing us a report!

Hannah Storm   June 13th, 2008 10:51 pm ET

It is so sad watching Tim's co-workers try to keep it together......it is so hard to do that

kim-chicago   June 13th, 2008 10:54 pm ET

Sunday morning just won't be the same...he will be missed.

EJ (USA)   June 13th, 2008 10:54 pm ET

It is so sad watching Tim’s co-workers try to keep it together……it is so hard to do that

I know – but I'm glad that they didn't hold back. Keith O. was just crying away and Andrea looked like she'd been crying all day. My heart goes out to them.

David Gergen   June 13th, 2008 10:55 pm ET

Hello all - It is inspiring to read your comments tonight about Tim Russert. That someone so dedicated to the highest standards of journalism - and someone so dedicated to his family, family and country - could win your hearts in the way that he so clearly has gives great reassurances about the future. Tim was always an optimist and would be the most reassured of all by what you have written.

David

Steve Boyd   June 13th, 2008 10:56 pm ET

Generally, I have to say, CNN has done an absolutely terrific job at covering the tragic weather condition across much of the US. Inclusive coverage, warnings when possible, compassion and very appropriate behaviour in the presence of those suffering personal tragedies.

All humans are curious to some degree, but I think in this case, the coverage was not satisfying in specifically that way. Instead, it gave people (me for sure) the opportunity to feel compassion for those that were, and are suffering, I feel gifted in that way.
Great job guys and gals!

Cindy   June 13th, 2008 10:56 pm ET

Great show tonight...LOVED the report from Anderson. See you all Monday. Have a great weekend Campbell.

Cindy...Ga.

Minou, New York City   June 13th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Jo Ann, Ohio   June 13th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Good night Campbell, Erica, Gary, Jana, and Anderson wherever you are. Have a great weekend.

Jolene   June 13th, 2008 10:58 pm ET

Hi David: I'm glad our comments inspire you as your comments do to us. Great show remembering a great man. Hope everyone has a reflective and inspiring weekend! Nite all!

I miss Anderson so much....... Please come home Anderson....

Susan - North Haven, CT   June 13th, 2008 10:58 pm ET

Okay Campbell... you have me in tears here. I can see that you will always cherish your memories of Tim.

You have your very own Guardian Angel now... Take care.

Ken in NC   June 13th, 2008 10:58 pm ET

Campbell, it's kind of funny in a sad way. Tim gave you your break and now you are demostrating your strengths and abilityies he saw in you tonight on the show while I am sitting in my home with tears in my eyes and thinking of how I have only had tears like this for two others. They were President Kennedy and Rev Martin Luther King Jr.

EJ (USA)   June 13th, 2008 10:58 pm ET

Goodnight – nice coverage on Tim Russert, Campbell. Very moving. Thanks. (Goodnight David Gergen, Erica, all!)

Happy Father's Day to the Dads!
