Two guns, two shooters. State authorities believe two weapons were used in the shooting death of two young girls over the weekend. The best friends, 11 and 13, were found in a ditch along a country road on Sunday night, each child shot multiple times. The grandfather of one of the victims discovered their bodies. Authorities are now trying to determine whether they stumbled into a bad situation, or if these girls may have been targeted.

There is a $25,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest or conviction.

A few international stories to check out this afternoon:

A really moving piece from Kyiung Lah about a Japanese man who has saved more than 100 lives, by convincing them not to jump to their deaths...
In Japan, one person commits suicide every 15 minutes. Each life lost is one too many.
_________

In the UK, a new counterterrorism bill approved today allows suspects to be held without charges for up to six weeks – the max prior to this bill was four weeks. Civil liberties groups and others are outraged.
_________

New information about the family born of heinous incest in Austria. The 19-year-old is now out of a coma and making great strides.
_________

And finally…

Tough to forget how Pluto was dropped from planet status – and a bit harshly, IMHO. I’m nostalgic for the little planet’s place in our solar lineup… like hot chocolate after sledding and pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving, it was always part of the puzzle. Until, of course, it wasn’t. Poor Pluto, kicked out of classrooms, textbooks and mobiles, demoted to “dwarf planet” status. Today I’m happy to report a little vindication for our friend, the former planet.

The International Astronomical Union – the group that names objects in the solar system - will now call all distant dwarf planets “plutoids”.

There are a few rules for plutoid status – obviously, these objects cant be a planet, they must also be father from the sun than Neptune and have their own gravity.

Could it have been one shooter with 2 guns? Just asking.

I saw the story of the two girls that were shot and killed yesterday. It seems to me too that they must have walked into some criminal action that unfortunately got them killed. It is extremely sad! I hope that with the reward that is being offered that someone will come forward and help to solve this awful case.

Hi Erica,
So much sad news. I think what happened to those two girls is a tragedy. What is going on in this world! Most days, I can't comprehend the horrible things we see and hear every day on the news.
As far as Pluto being booted to the bumped pile..Not to worry, Pluto..You still have that Disney connection! How many planets can say with confidence, I'm going to Disneyland and have it be true...Not many! Plutoid's, yep, sounds real good..
P.S. Julie in San Diego, CA.. Thanks for asking, my tomatoes are doing well.

What kind of person(s) shoot(s) innocent children? what did they ever do to deserve that?

What is going on in our world that death is better than life in such large numbers? It is becoming more common place. What is going on there that it is so pervasive?

What would happen to a person in the UK if they were innocent yet held? I can understand someone truly guilty or seemed to be guilty enough but to be innocent and held would be torture.

Why do freaks like Fritzel get away with crazy stuff like this? What is going to happen to these children/grandchildren? How are they going to adjust to the fact that they are incestuous? And do they have any real health issues being so closely related?

Pluto, poor underdog, at least it gets some acknowledgment as being more than just a hunk of junk out in space.

Erica,

This is getting bad in life. I mean how in the world could two young girls like that have done anything to have warranted the actions of this truly sick person or people? My faith in humanity is really starting to wane.

Sorry, just got distracted by a tornado being in the area. Have to really watch the weather tonight. Looks like the area I live in is going to get pounded tonight. I just hope that everything turns out okay tonight. No more tornado's in Omaha, thank you...

Okay now back to the subject at hand. Society. What is going on. I just can't figure it out. It is good to know that there is someone out there even if it is in Japan that is doing all they can to save lives. That is a very heartening to see. I just wish there were more people like him in the world. I know I have done my bit over the years, helping hundreds of people in car accidents and house fires. Never did it for a living but was just a person that was in the right place in the right time.

Erica, The offer of the tomato's still stands if there is a way to get them to you... Keep up the good work and kick Campbell out of the big chair tonight... LOL...

Erica:
Whether it was random or planned murders, two young lives were wasted at the hands of individual(s) with no value for human life.

Prayers are needed for Skyla and Taylor's families.

Interesting Erica!

Usually, Asian cultures have a stigma against seeking psychiatric help and there are suicide practices inbedded in the culture.

In the United States, it proofs that anti-depressants don't neccesarily prevent suicide (or homicidal suicide – massacre shootings), usually during discontinuation of these meds.

Senseless…the killing of those two girls. Sadly, nothing shocks me anymore, Erica. I used to cry myself to sleep after watching the news. Now, everytime I see stories like this, I pray for everyone…those who died and those who mourn their deaths.

I’m glad Kerstin Fritzl is doing better. I also pray for this family…that they continue to heal. I do hope the public gives them the privacy they need.

“Plutoid”…awww…I like the word…how cute is that…

See you later,

I grew up in rural Oklahoma and would walk several miles to my friend's house or grandmother's house and never think twice about it. Times have changed. It is scary. Those girls were very innocent victims and I hope they find the criminal (s) involved.

Ruby   June 11th, 2008 8:01 pm ET

Hi Erica, it's hard to find words to express feelings on what happen to the 2 girls, people seem to do un~human thing like nothing.. prayers to their familys..

The story of the two girls is horrible. I feel for the families. I just hope it doesn't turn out to be a neighbor or family member that did it. That would just be terrible. It reminds me of the tragedy that struck my community about 2 years ago. It was the worst crime I have ever heard of, and the killer was the little girl's neighbor. Incredibly sad.

Erica: Did you ever see the Pluto t-shirts on the internet? There is a real cute one I ordered for the kids in the Science club. It is at the Think Geek website.

Art   June 11th, 2008 9:10 pm ET

I don't know why but I believe they will find 2 teenage boys are responsible. They will probably be known as troublemakers in that area. God bless them and their families.

Erica,

What a terrible thing for a grandfather to find – his grandchild shot and dead. How horrible for him and how horrible for both families of the girls. My thoughts are with them.

I'm amused that Pluto got vindicated by the astronomers naming bodies like it plutoids. I still think of Pluto as a planet – too many years I suppose of believing it was!

I'm watching the 360 coverage on the tornadoes – that area of the country just can't catch a break lately. Here in Alabama we are having storms today but not severe ones so far. I hope that area gets good weather and dries out soon.
