good evening everyone

Megan O. Toronto, ON, Canada   May 16th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Hello Anderson, Erica and bloggees

Happy Friday before along weekend to my fellow Canadians :)

Andrew, Lafayette IN   May 16th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

good evening anderson, erica.. looking forward to the show..

Maureen T   May 16th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Good evening Andy! TGIF!

carmen   May 16th, 2008 10:01 pm ET

McCain is a sheep in wolf’s clothing. Really disappointed in him.

CaseyJPS - California   May 16th, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Greetings from America’s Desert Playground 360 Bloggers!

Sarah, Atlanta GA   May 16th, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Hi Anderson, sounds like an interesting program tonite. Can’t wait to see the piece about Warren Jeffs.

Paris   May 16th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Lie, you did take it personal and so did the rest of your party.
Israelis like it.
Bush never said democrats.

deann   May 16th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Everytime I hear Obama talk, the more and more impressed I am. The republicans are in seriuos trouble

CaseyJPS - California   May 16th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

In McCain’s speech in Columbus yesterday there were no specifics on how he would achieve any point he made. Especially no indication
of how the war will be won and we have to wait until 2013 to bring home most of the troops.

Paris   May 16th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

John McCain only stated the facts.
You only said that today.

McCain said we will deal with them one way or another. Never said
I will have a presidential meeting.

Stop lying Obama.

MaryBeth   May 16th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

I don’t understand what the big deal is about just talking to people. It’s not like he’s making deals or anything…what’s the harm in just talking? We might learn something.

Mike, Syracuse NY   May 16th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

I think the proper reference would have been to say surrender instead of appeasement.

Jolene   May 16th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Hello bloggers! Glad it’s Friday. Sounds like Bush started another war this week….we got the battle between Bush, McCain, and Obama. It’s fascinating to say the least.

kathy in ohio   May 16th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

how come obama can never respond to anything right away it always takes him 1,2,3, days to respond

Paolo   May 16th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Good evening everyone,

It is now clearly Obama vs. McCain. National security is an issue where Obama clearly has his work cut out for him as it has consistently been McCain’s strength.

deann   May 16th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

McCain will have a hard time campaigning against Obama - He would have hard an easier time with Hilary.

Lisa, TN   May 16th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Democrats unite. This is what we will need to knock out the republicans.

Obama/Clinton ‘08

carmen   May 16th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Someone please increase his daily prune rations, McCain is so full of it. He wants to shoot first and talk later. Wrong, wrong, wrong

Jo Ann, Ohio   May 16th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Hi Anderson and everyone!

Obama is doing a lot of grand standing here. Even if Bush did not mean to include him in his remarks Obama’s own website says that he would agree to meet with leaders like Ahmadinejad without preconditions. In fact, he said the same thing during the You Tube debates.

eva   May 16th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

I can’t wait for the Obama McCain debate. Anderson please make sure you host that debate, we want no one else specially after the last fiasco ( abc).
Ps. Boy isn’t Jason Taylor hot? He is nothing but seam and class. He remind me of the king in The king and I ( the cartoon). He made me watch reality TV.

Mike, Syracuse NY   May 16th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Casey, Obama says he’ll end the war iimmediately. How will he do that? The only way is pull out unconditionally and let whatever will happen, happen in Iraq.

Sharon from Indy   May 16th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Again, the Karl Rove Effect is in the works. Using fear and manipulative information, the Republicans are on the road to use misinformation for the presidential race.

june   May 16th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Shame on Huckabee—isn’t he a minister? To make a stupid remark about shooting at Obama…please, that was a stupid remark.

Lisa - Ft. Lauderdale   May 16th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Since Bush has pushed democracy around the world , Hezbollah and Hamas representatives have actually been elected to lead in Palestine and Lebanon - wow, now we have freely elected terrorists governing in the Middle East - his foreign policies have also strengthened Iran’s power - McCain is in favor of following Bush’s policies and they are a disaster for our country - we are not safer and if we don’t stop with our arrogant foreign policy we will have more attacks like 9/11 in the future

CaseyJPS - California   May 16th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Accordng to McCain the U.S. must maintain a military presence meaning we could be there for another 50 years, although he clearly stated previously that maintaining a presence was not part of his plan. This also means that the occupation of IRAQ has to be cleaned up by another administration, somewhere down the road.

kathy in ohio   May 16th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

God i hope Obama isnt the president

Yvonne   May 16th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

The Republicans are not looking good at all.

MaryBeth   May 16th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

It’s great to know that McCain can repeat what Obama wants to do…but not say what he is going to do.

And Huckabee’s comments are horrible!!! Karl Rove should be hogtied…

Fay, CA   May 16th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Has everyone forgotten about Hillary Clinton?

That was a pretty shameful comment by Huckabee about shooting Obama.

Jolene   May 16th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Ok, I admit I chuckled at the trip over a chair comment by Huckabee but the gun reference was a bit off. At least he apologized.

Andrew, Lafayette IN   May 16th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

I wonder if Obama will make it to the primary. The GOP is just starting…

Maureen T   May 16th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

It’s interesting how the Republicans can say what they like at the NRA meeting! Mike Huckabee’s smart remark wasn’t funny either!

Claire   May 16th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Speak for yourself, Carl Rove. No one needs an assault rifle. I don’t think our founding father’s meant for people to own those types of guns.

Cindy   May 16th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Obama may have bitten off more than he can chew. The Reps are going after him good!

deann   May 16th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

I hope the republicans continue stumping the fear mongering politics throughout the rest of the campaign - they have not learned the american people are more afraid of republicans than Iran or N. Korea!!

Mike, Syracuse NY   May 16th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Easy Kathy, Obama’s not ready for prime time, so he needs his staff to caucus before answering any issue. I hope they’ll all be there on cots next to his bed for that 3 AM phone call.

CaseyJPS - California   May 16th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Not communicating is NOT the answer. That’s just ignorant and more fear-mongering (sp?).

Jolene   May 16th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Republicans may be at an all time low right now but there is no place to go but up now.

Tracey - Boston   May 16th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Mike, Syracuse

Casey, Obama says he’ll end the war iimmediately. How will he do that? The only way is pull out unconditionally and let whatever will happen, happen in Iraq.

Obama did say more recently that he would listen to what the military has to say about withdrawal!!! Which is wise.

Sharon from Indy   May 16th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Does McCain really want to connect himself with President Bush? He is the most unpopular president in history? Who is giving this man advice?

carmen   May 16th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

MaryBeth, I agree with you. I guess these guys are the Republican versions of Carville and Davis LOL They are ridiculous

EJ   May 16th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

I think Huckabee didn’t mean to say that. He’s a funny guy and he was trying to make a joke. I think Huckabee is a sincere guy.

MaryBeth   May 16th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

That gun comment, how many ppl in that room were not white, I wonder?

CaseyJPS - California   May 16th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

I wonder where the additional armed forces will come from to permanently occupy IRAQ? Oh yeah, we’re doing such a great job with retaining our service people with such great healthcare and education programs that I’m certain they’ll all want to be first in line for 20 consecutive tours of duty. McCain’s rhetoric relies on the selflessness of our youth to keep our military forces replenished. And, remember McCain is currently refusing to support the current G.I. bill.

Mike, Syracuse NY   May 16th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

McCain’s military presense is not in a combat role, or an occupation. It’s similar to what we have done since 1945 in Germany and Japan. We have troops there right now, and it’s maintained stability and helped 2 former facist states to become strog democracies.

Tracey - Boston   May 16th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Lisa - Ft. Lauderdale

I agree…Bush did not like it when Hamas won the elections…

Sharon from Indy   May 16th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

If this is the beginning of the final presidential campaign fireworks, it is going to get very hot under the collar the next six months.

kathy in ohio   May 16th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Fay
i havnt forgot about Hillary and i dont think her 17 million plus have either I think this will hurt obama in nov………..sorry i just cannot get behind obama

Fay, CA   May 16th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Let’s hope the American public has had enough of the Bush Administration and it’s disastrous policies and will not be taken in again by the likes of Karl Rove or John McCain, who doesn’t seem all that different from Bush.

Paula, Colorado   May 16th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Anderson,

Hi. Happy Friday!
The Republicans look weak ganging up on Barack Obama over comments that came from their own Party.

Cindy   May 16th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

With all of this fighting between Obama and McCain I can’t wait to see them in a debate!!

Megan Dresslar   May 16th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Hello Anderson, Erica and all!
Happy Friday!!!!! I was so surprised Jeff wanted get out of jail, I said, no way.

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   May 16th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

I think the Democrats are capable of just as much dirty pool as the Republicans. November feels like it’s a lifetime away. Batten down the hatches.

Jacqueline   May 16th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Sharon,

I totally agree. I believe Bush was signaling to the radicals to position themselves. Now, like many other Blacks, I am beginning to fear for Obama.

Lisa - Ft. Lauderdale   May 16th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Huckabee’s comment was horrible - I’m glad he apologized but everyone knows that Obama had to have secret service protection earlier than prior presidential candidates because the reality is that there are some crazy, hateful racists who go ballistic at the idea of a black President - it is not a joking matter - as much as I vehemently dislike Bush, I wouldn’t even make a joke about someone pointing a gun at him - and I’m pretty irreverant - it’s just crossing a line that should never be crossed

Rose from Southern Calif   May 16th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Hi Anderson Taking a look at the Obama and McCain campaign what a fight!

Teresa from Oklahoma   May 16th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

I was a registered Republican, but I have switched over. I hope Obama can make good on what he is saying. It gives me so much hope. I want my children to know what the American dream is about.

Claire   May 16th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

I’m sick of the Republicans using fear. It’s no better than what the Soviet Union and others used to do. Instill a fear of things and people will respond to you because you think you know better. I don’t buy it and never will.

Bonnie   May 16th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Karl Rove knows what he is doing–getting rid of assault rifles are fighting words for the NRA.

Kyle in San Diego, CA   May 16th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Obama is finally, TRULY “fired up and ready to go.” He’s been restrained against Hillary, but now he’s able to use all that pent up frustration and let loose on the republicans.

Maureen T   May 16th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Don’t underestimate Barack Obama.

Kristina- la   May 16th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

God i HOPE obama is president!!!

Cynthia   May 16th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

That’s funny Carmen.

Sharon, Karl Rove has his own set of problems and should be dealing with them.

Kay   May 16th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

God I hope Obama IS president. We need something different.

Kathy   May 16th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

as for the victims and tehir families in China my heart goes out to them. Als oto the victims and their families in Myanmar God help them all.

Raymond   May 16th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

I think this is a perfect opertunity for Clinton to get out of the race. She can use the excuse of be charged up to insure that Demecrats beat the Bush/McCain campain. The entire republican army are going after Obama and She would look like a hero sacraficing for the greater Demacrat party.

Sharon from Indy   May 16th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Republicans are worn out and outdated. Let the new breed of leadership come in. The mayday of fundamental conservatism is over.

CaseyJPS - California   May 16th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Mike, Syracuse>ANYTHING we do in IRAQ is an occupation. That’s what happens after you invade a country and stay there.

MaryBeth   May 16th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

This GOP is so NOT the Republican party of Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt.

Chanel   May 16th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Believe it or not, I feel bad for Huckabee because I’m sure he didn’t mean it like it sounded. It was a bad joke, and he apologized immediately.

deborah,OH   May 16th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Good evening Anderson, Erica, & all. Looks like an interesting show so far.
I agree with JoAnn about the grand standing going on, but then I guess everybody is trying very hard to make their point, good or not so good.

Joe   May 16th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

With all the knowledge and expertise in Foreign Policy that McCain and Bush had, what the heck di s they achieve? Dragged the country back and lowered our international status to the pit?

RJ   May 16th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

there might be alot about Mc Cain, but what do we know about OBAMA?

Elizabeth Brown   May 16th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

I am not sure if this is the right place, but I can not understand how anyone who is intelligent can believe that we shouldn’t sit down with all leaders regardless of what they believe or who they represent. The gift of being human is the engagement of a dialog with others in an effort to restore peace and justice in the world.

Erica Hill
CNN

Happy Friday everyone

Lisa - Ft. Lauderdale   May 16th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

I think the Republicans are right - we should be fearful - we should fear that they will continue to run this country into the ground if we don’t all wake up and start having intelligent debates and think for ourselves instead of repeating talking head soundbites

Yvonne   May 16th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

What’s great about politics in 2008 is that people are well informed and not easily fooled by the Republican Machine. Obama is proving that the attack machine is now an old clunker.

CaseyJPS - California   May 16th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Hi Erica! Glad to see you. It doesn’t sound like we’re all that happy tonight, does it?

Brad   May 16th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

I am a Canadian. When your biggest trading partner and closest friend starts to privately send out messages to the world that the US foreign policy isolates itself and no longer speaks for Canada even remotely,it’s time for the US to wake up from its Bush slumber and elect somebody who gets the principal “keep your friends close and your enemies closer”. I pray for a democratic victory. It is possible, and necessary to negotiate with Iran, Syria et al.

Rose from Southern Calif   May 16th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Dirty campaigning will not do it this time for the Republican party time is changing. The Bush Administration took care of that.

Fay, CA   May 16th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Kathy in Ohio–it just seems that Hillary is being left out of the equation–neither Obama or McCain mentioned her name in their speeches.

MaryBeth   May 16th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Don’t dictators and tyrants lead by fear? When did this become a dictatorship run by Karl Rove?

priscilla   May 16th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Anderson please whatever Huckebee said today is no joke. he should be ashame. apology or not he is a minister and i think is high time his sermon should be checked. if anything should happen to BO they should hold Huckebee respondsible. there is no joke about wishing someone dead. presidents have been gunned in this country. this is stupid

Vilmarie   May 16th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Happy Friday Anderson and Erica!

The personal attacks and allegations in any campaign is just plain ‘ole low. Lets keep it intelligent and not base the campaign and debates on sensitive topics that cause fear to voters. Fear is not what will make voters vote on Election Day.

V.

Cynthia   May 16th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

A debate between McCain and Obama will definitely be interesting.

Cindy   May 16th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

McCain will be the next pres if Obama gets the nomination!

Sharon from Indy   May 16th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Good evening Erica!

CaseyJPS - California   May 16th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Right on David Gergen! Thank you for the level-headed, well-grounded commentary (as always).

Betty   May 16th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

As a dem. I thought McCain did a great job going against Obama today. Many of us dems will back McCain for the election no matter what happens.Obama is weak and does not know what time a day it is when it comes to experience to run this country. So if we can’t have Clinton in the race we will back McCain all the way.

Megan Dresslar   May 16th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

That right! I agree with Kathy.
My hearts go out to China people and Maynmar too.

EJ   May 16th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

Yeah, Huckabee just comes across as a very sincere guy. He probably feels so bad about that. I know he didn’t mean it like that.

Teresa from Oklahoma   May 16th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

I am so sick of policticians blaming one another and never accepting responsibilty. It has been years since anything any good came out of Washington. I am ready to give the guy a chance. I would rather let him try and fail than not try at all.

Paris   May 16th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

And McCain’s age is ok to joke about?

Tracey - Boston   May 16th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

The whole reason why the candidates have security is because the shooting of Robert Kennedy in 1968.

Jana, Indiana   May 16th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

I was so disappointed in Huckabee’s comment. I thought he had more class than that.

kelly in mo   May 16th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

OK, It looks like maybe some folks don’t realize that if we pull out immediately the terrorists over there will claim that they WON, because they will claim they run the Americans out…. that is also the reason the President cannot sit down with TERRORISTS without preconditions. They are Terrorists…….. they don’t negotiate. Obama just stammers when asked what he would do. And now he is claiming he didn’t say he would talk with them with no preconditions, but clearly he did! and Hillary called him on it when they debated, it’s on you tube.

Jen in Mex.   May 16th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

If a regular joe made a joke like Huckabee, you know he would at least be taking in for questioning. You can’t talk like that at airports, even joking, and it shouldn’t be allowed by politicians. Good grief!

Jamie L   May 16th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

Being from Arizona,

I personally like John McCain, but he has a lot of baggage that will come forward once the Democrats settle and really go after him.

He’s just plain out of touch.

This country needs a fresh, intelligent leader who inpires our country and the global market, especially regarding foreign policies.

O’boma is the clear choice.

Lisa, TN   May 16th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

To those who said they would vote for McCain if their Democratic candidate didn’t get the nomination, you better think again.

Obama/Clinton ‘08

Rose from Southern Calif   May 16th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Kathy…Obama thinks before he opens his mouth, not like President Bush can keep his mouth close. And acting like he is John Wayne.

Tyrone   May 16th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Yes. It was an off hand remark and he apologized. Everyone else was taking some jabs at Obama, and this was a jab gone bad. Only those haven’t said a stupid remark in their life should still be “outraged” by this.

On another note. If Mr Gergen thinks that Obama should link McCain to Bush, then McCain should link Obama to his Pastor and to William Ayers, etc. Isn’t that fair game?

Paolo   May 16th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

David is right. One reason I see why McCain has done well in the polls is that he appeals to moderates more than President Bush. They key to a democratic victory in the fall is to equate a McCain presidency to a “3rd Bush term.” Marcus is also right, coming into the fall, democrats need to address their relative perceived weakness in national security.

Kyle in San Diego, CA   May 16th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

This not-speaking-to-certain-foreign-leaders argument is a losing one. If the man wants to speak with them, let him speak to them. That’s his approach. Obama isn’t saying that’s ALL he’d do, but if that’s how he wants to start his approach, so be it. It’s Bush’s “cowboy” approach that has lessened our standing around the world. Don’t we teach our children to try to talk things out first?

I thought everyone was created equal. If so, why does everyone have to be extra careful about what they say about him or to him? Huckabee was reacting in the moment.

Andrew, Lafayette IN   May 16th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

The republican machine may be old… and a clunker, but I’m sure they’ll figure out a way to modernize their attacks. Give them time. We’ve got nearly 6 months till Nov.

Jolene   May 16th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

I just love watching the strategies each party takes. It will definitely be very interesting seeing these unfold as we approach the general election.

Shirley   May 16th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

I am outraged at the Mc Cain political team, when they continue to spue racial poison. Mike Huckabee’s outrageous comment offended me. And he is suppose to a man of God, he owes me an apology. That’s what’s wrong with the current adminstration day. And Mr Mike Huckabee your comments were just as offensive as Pastor Wright’s comments. Men that say they are called by God should stay in their place, if they can’t continue to be governed by God. The bible says ” Life and death are in the power of the tongue. Huckabee watch your mouth.

Michael D   May 16th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

Paris

Two wars, Gas prices at record levels. Economy in peril. What’s McCain plain? Four more years of failed Bush/McCain policy.

I like to retire sometime during my lifetime. Not pay for a war we have no business fighting.

carmen   May 16th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

MCCain looks older than his mother already!

Cindy   May 16th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

Age is just a number! McCain is in great health so that should not even be a factor in this election. We have way worse things to worry about.

june   May 16th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

The Republicans have totally screwed up our foreign affairs..it couldn’t be worse. They have stirred up more terrorists.
Can’t wait for Obama!

Kyle in San Diego, CA   May 16th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

The good thing is… we’ll never have to find out if McCain is too old to be president.

kim-chicago   May 16th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

Have all the republicans “lost their bearings”…first George Bush makes his outrageous statements, then begs Saudi Arabia and gets dismissed…followed by Huckabee who was totally offensive during his NRA speech…then John Mcain parrots Bush…why would anyone align themselves with George Bush right now…talk about poor judgement!!

I don’t think the democrats have to worry about taking the republicans down they are doing a great job on their own…

Jacqui Chan   May 16th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

does anyone know, how old is the oldest President we’ve ever had (when he went into office)
McCain’s Mom is really adorable and very intelligent, well spoken…

Cynthia   May 16th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

Cindy, why would you think that Obama can’t win if Democrats go out and vote in the large numbers that they have voted in the primary?

Teresa from Oklahoma   May 16th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

Hello Erica, I love watching you and Anderson. You guys are great together. So informative. Keep up the good work.

deann   May 16th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

It is also reckless to instill fear and ignore america’s enemies - especially if our enemies are armed to the teeth.

Diplomatic engagement is a must in today’s world.

Rose from Southern Calif   May 16th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

McCain in his 70’s he had Cancer right? That should be the concern instead not his age. And we should not start attacking family member that needs not to be said.

Megan Dresslar   May 16th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

Hi Erica!
we have fun blog time time tonight! :)

Chanel   May 16th, 2008 10:24 pm ET

I don’t think Obama was referring to McCain’s age when commenting on his bearings. I’m pretty sure he was referring to his rumored “anger problem.” Isn’t there a clip on his original statement?

Raymond   May 16th, 2008 10:24 pm ET

The NRA rally and the issues weve seen this week looked like the entire Republican party against one man. We need to see more Democrats fighting with Obama.

Fay, CA   May 16th, 2008 10:24 pm ET

I’m a little more worried about McCain’s supposed hair-trigger temper than his age.

Kay   May 16th, 2008 10:24 pm ET

John McCain is too old to be President.

Yvonne   May 16th, 2008 10:24 pm ET

Did John McCain get a psychological check up when he returned from the war?

CaseyJPS - California   May 16th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

I think the age thing is a really, really low point in this campaign. After aging, what’s next? Too young (oh yeah, I think I’ve heard that already), too big, too small….

Sara, Oklahoma   May 16th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

Okay, so if McCain is the president, would he be the oldest president in history? If not, why the controversy?

Lisa - Ft. Lauderdale   May 16th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

How are we supposed to believe in a foreign policy of an administration that has changed the excuse for going to war at least three times? Remember, we attacked Iraq because they had WMD, not they don’t have ‘em? Ok, well we are going because of 9/11? Oh, they had nothing to do with that? Ok, then we went to war because Saddam was a bad guy and we need to spread democracy…not to mention that democracy spread at gunpoint isn’t really democracy, but let’s not question, let’s just act tough with the world….that’s the answer… it’s ridiculous - if this country falls for this baloney AGAIN - I just won’t be able to take it….

Jo Ann, Ohio   May 16th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

If McCain selects a younger competent VP I dont’ think anyone will have a problem voting for him in the Fall. Age is irrelevant, It all depends on your attitude. I have a lot of young friends who seem very old and I have a lot of older relatives that could dance me under the table.

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   May 16th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

So Obama is a little young and McCain is a little old. It makes little difference, unless people “choose” to harp on it.

Bonnie   May 16th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

If McCain is too old, and Obama too young–I guess that means Hillary wins!!

Michelle in Los Angeles   May 16th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

By saying Obama has no experience are they not referencing age? So if that is so, then McCain’s age does matter. 72 wow. That plus a little stress, most certain to come with the Presidency is sure to weaken his mind.

Look this man is old, lacking in intelligence on the economy(our #1 issue), and he is four more years of Bush. Surely we can see the facts, that he is no good for America.

Sharon from Indy   May 16th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

Please, please, can the candidates get back to the issues faced by the American people like poverty, the educational dropout rate, droughts, foreclosures, etc.

deann   May 16th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

Try spending 5 years as a Vietnamese prisoner of war - You would look a little older than your age too!!

Bill   May 16th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

I would like to ask a question. What amount of national security and foreign relations experience did President Bush had before he took office? And also,What national security experience do Sen. Mc Cain have?If it is because of his military days, well as far as I know he was captured and locked up all through the war.

Jolene   May 16th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

McCain doesn’t have to worry so much about his age, more about his temper. Eventhough calling that kid a “little jerk” for asking him the “age” question was a good comeback.

Paolo   May 16th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

I personally don’t have an issue with someone’s age for being president. In fact, in terms of gaining wisdom, it may be good.

Betty Ann, Nacogdoches,TX   May 16th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

Was the oldest presient Ronadl Regan?

Anne   May 16th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

John McCain’s has nothing to do with his capabilities. It should not be considered no more so than the capabilities of someone who is black or female being president. And my 85 year old very active mother would walk miles around the world, and challenge anyone to a debate on social issues and be able to stand her ground without seeming old or feeble. It is a shame that we continue to look at the older individuals as less than capable.

Jen in Mex.   May 16th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

If race is an issue, if gender is an issue, then age can be an issue too. As much as I respect McCain for his service to his country, and his obvious drive to become president, I still want a younger person who will have to live a long time with whatever legacy his presidency will leave.

priscilla   May 16th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

Anderson what Huckebee said should not be treated lightly. rememeber Virginia Tech. that’s how it starts. he should not encourage any thinking of that sought. i have said my peace. anything should happen to BO is Huckebee and the republican party. good night folks.

Rose from Southern Calif   May 16th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

China’s pain is so great with children in parents arms and crying walking away from the school that once stand. What will happen to the american’s business there have they been destoryed too?

Megan O. Toronto, ON, Canada   May 16th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

I did that when I was a kid….hit the garage across the street. The key was in the engine though

Maureen T   May 16th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

A 5 year old driver! What were they thinking!?

Mike, Syracuse NY   May 16th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

When someone wants to destroy you and your way of life, you can’t sit down and talk to them.

EJ   May 16th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

Ronald Reagan was the oldest. I think McCain would be fine but lets not pretend that age doesn’t cause the body to “deteriorate” over the years - especially in older years.

Many people around Reagan said they could see the effect of his Alzheimers in his last years in office.

McCain is also not as sharp as he was in 2000. Noticeably.

Jacqueline   May 16th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

CaseyJPS - California
“Right on David Gergen! Thank you for the level-headed, well-grounded commentary (as always).”

Casey, isn’t he always? That Gergen guy, now he is someone I’d trust answering the phone at 3 AM :-)

Kathy from Indiana   May 16th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

My opinion of why John McCain doesn’t want any kind of National Health Care is that he doesn’t have a clue what health care costs. He has had Health Care all of his life, from the day he was born.

Cynthia   May 16th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

I agree with Deann.

Tracey - Boston   May 16th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

Reagan was the oldest. He was 72 when he left. If mccain is president he will enter at 72 and leave at 80

EJ   May 16th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

Obama is not that young. Clinton was younger than Obama.

Andrew, Lafayette IN   May 16th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

Hillary is in the middle. She’s 60, right? She’s just right!

Genevieve M, TX   May 16th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

How did that little kid reach the pedals? I was 17 before I was tall enough to reach the pedals on the family van!

Tracey - Boston   May 16th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

If MCain serves 8 years…god forbide

John from NJ   May 16th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

McCain is healthy with great genes. His age is just like the McBush type of line, merely distractions for dems. It is not an issue for 60% plus out there and those that think it is it is way down on their list.

Sharon from Indy   May 16th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

Kim,
It is more than poor judgment, it is desperation from the Republican Party. As a lame duck president, Bush is doing more damage than good for the John McCain.

Jolene   May 16th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

McCain’s mother does appear to be very sharp for her age. It would be very smart for McCain to bring her on the campaign trail with him. She appears to be very likeable. What better person to tell us some stories about McCain!

Geoff   May 16th, 2008 10:32 pm ET

Jacqui - the oldest person to take office was Reagan…he was 70

Christina, Windber, PA   May 16th, 2008 10:32 pm ET

Obama is a “little young” and McCain is a “little old”, so that makes Hillary “just right”!

Megan O. Toronto, ON, Canada   May 16th, 2008 10:32 pm ET

the polygimst raid was 6 weeks ago…….where the heck did the time go???

Jamie L   May 16th, 2008 10:32 pm ET

Being from Arizona and having lunch with a prominent citizen who has alzheimer’s….

McCain’s mind is slipping and will continue to worsen….

Enough said.

Megan Dresslar   May 16th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

I agree with you Kay, McCain is too old for next nominee president.

EJ   May 16th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

Those people saying that age is not a factor, would you be saying the same thing if McCain were 82 years old? Lets not pretend that age is not a factor.

Mike, Syracuse NY   May 16th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

Interesting that all those who criticize Republican fear mongering also call McCain Bush’s third term. What’’s that if not fear mongering?

deann   May 16th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

How is it that if polygamy is a crime in this country - groups like the FLDS are allowed to continue to prosper???

Sara, Oklahoma   May 16th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

Has Gary been in Arizona since the raid?

Mike, Syracuse NY   May 16th, 2008 10:36 pm ET

Boy, these ‘believers’ talk like they’ve been brainwashed.

Fay, CA   May 16th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

What difference does it make if there are “only” five underage mothers in FLDS? It’s still completely wrong.

Lisa - Ft. Lauderdale   May 16th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Heather   May 16th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Its hard to prosecute when you cant get accurate records on age. Its just strange people existing like this in 2008.

Mike, Syracuse NY   May 16th, 2008 10:38 pm ET

Deann, I think they get around the law with one legal marraige and multiple ’spiritual’ marriages.

Sharon from Indy   May 16th, 2008 10:39 pm ET

Will China’s Olympic “Bird Nest” stadium sustain an earthquake?

They live in remote areas and remain very self-suffiicient. They fly under the radar screen for the most part, with virtually no contact with the “outside” world.

Rose from Southern Calif   May 16th, 2008 10:39 pm ET

So, what, if there’s is just 5 or1000 teens under the age of 18 is who is haviing SEX with older men should be enough too throw the men away in jail. That’s a good reason.

Sara.RO   May 16th, 2008 10:39 pm ET

The age is not important.
How it comes if McCain will choose as VP a person around 30 . Perfect balance …

You Know Rover speaks about Obama not wearing flag pin but McCain goes to the NRA and speak with NO flag pin. Rover check out McCain he never wears one WHY? Phoenix, AZ

MaryBeth   May 16th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

Even the Catholics realize age is a factor!!! You can’t become pope if you’re 80 or older.

Jolene   May 16th, 2008 10:41 pm ET

It will be very disappointing if these FLDS child custody hearings do not uncover any abuse. I suppose they are taking one case at a time which just seems to drag this out for even more weeks.

Dennis   May 16th, 2008 10:42 pm ET

these people should be charge and convicted of crimes.

Jolene   May 16th, 2008 10:43 pm ET

“Not enough women to go around” Is that true Anderson? Seems to me that there are plenty of women, they are all making babies faster than I can blink an eye.

Julliet   May 16th, 2008 10:44 pm ET

I agree too McCain is too old. What is the retiring age in America? Why would we want someone who is supposed to be retired in the white house.

CaseyJPS - California   May 16th, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Jolene>There is definitely brainwashing going on here, so it’s a roll of the dice whether we will get the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth…

kim-chicago   May 16th, 2008 10:45 pm ET

I don’t think the number of years you have lived is important…right now what is important is that you are in tune with the world as it exists at this moment…that you are current, relevant and forward thinking. i think that is why Obama has connected with so many young people and McCain appears old-school.

Jacqui Chan   May 16th, 2008 10:45 pm ET

I am surprised that the even keep any written records since it can be incriminating and they are already very weary of “outsiders”

Edward   May 16th, 2008 10:46 pm ET

You know the president should know better than to talk about leaders in this country to overseas leaders. Phoenix, AZ

Shirley   May 16th, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Polygamy, is no different then pimps claiming to be men of God, using women and telling them it is because they love them, and in this case that it’s God’s will. One under age mother is enough, to talk all the children. If I abuse one of my children, the law will take all my children.

deann   May 16th, 2008 10:46 pm ET

At what point does common sense come into this - 400 children in harms way, whatever the harm, need to be removed from the parents and the situation.

Jo Ann, Ohio   May 16th, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Would someone explain why these men must have so many women? Since they are throwing out the boys, it isn’t like they don’t have enough males around.

This “religion” is nothing more than a man made excuse for these oversexed guys to have a harem.

Bill   May 16th, 2008 10:46 pm ET

It looks like a good program lineup. What I’ve seen so far backs up this opinion.

Rose from Southern Calif   May 16th, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Religion shouldn’t a reason to abuse a human being!

MaryBeth   May 16th, 2008 10:47 pm ET

Will the parents who have lost children in the Chinese earthquake be allowed to have another child? With the “one child” policy…does that include children who have died? Can you have another child if a previous one dies?

EJ   May 16th, 2008 10:47 pm ET

I have watched Huckabee long enough to know that he would never intentionally say anything like that or believe it. He has a natural comedian in him and it was a joke that went wrong - that he didn’t realize until it was too late. I don’t think his thinking was anywhere near what it came out sounding like. Although that isn’t an excuse - I know his apology was sincere.

june   May 16th, 2008 10:47 pm ET

I will vote for Obama. But I do not want to see McCain’s age brought up…any more than I want to see race brought up.

Jacqui Chan   May 16th, 2008 10:48 pm ET

BURIED ALIVE! - that is literally a nightmare - those poor people and there were or still are thousands in that situation

Trevor   May 16th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

TX has gotten DNA evidence from many/most/all of the kids. I hope it gets the same from the mothers and also the fathers, who by now have likely cut and run to UT and AZ. The DNA results ought to be coming in fairly soon. I wonder about pinpointing the age of the females, though, since the births happened, as I understand it, onsite at the compound, and records might therefore be a bit dodgy.

Megan Dresslar   May 16th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Sara in Ok,
Yes, Gary had already in few days ago.

sarah B....Durham,NC   May 16th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

i think the question with the FDLS and returning the children home is what type of “environment” will they be living in?? is it a “healthy environment”?? i hope that CPS or Mental Health Dept will keep case files open and keep investigations on going to see the impact on these childrens’ minds will occur.

KELLY ANN, north jersey   May 16th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Huckabee is a little strange, what a horrible comment he made today about Obama having a gun pointed at him.

CaseyJPS - California   May 16th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Honestly EJ, when he said that (and I get the joke part) he sounded like he was coming down to Karl Rove’s level, which is about as low as you can go in politics.

Sharon from Indy   May 16th, 2008 10:51 pm ET

900 children died! Something is very wrong in China!

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   May 16th, 2008 10:51 pm ET

That’s what is so sad about earthquakes. The damaged ruins take so long to get through, that time is lost and some people can’t hold on that long. What an awful tragedy.

Mike, Syracuse NY   May 16th, 2008 10:51 pm ET

It looks like enforcement of building codes is nonexistant in China. i wonder how much is due to corruption and payoffs.

Julliet   May 16th, 2008 10:51 pm ET

I pray for these people involved in the earthquake in China for the God Lord to comfort them.

Genevieve M, TX   May 16th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

I am tearing up listening to the parents cry as they discover their childrens’ bodies under the rubble of the collapsed school buliding.

KELLY ANN, north jersey   May 16th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

maybe if china was not so communist and allowed citizens to leave the damn country there wouldn’t be so many deaths. People are packed like sardines in china

Jana, Indiana   May 16th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

It is so heartbreaking for those people in China.

Good night Anderson and all. Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Yvonne   May 16th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

This is devastating. We need to design earthquake proof buildings.

Jo Ann, Ohio   May 16th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

MaryBeth; I think I had heard that they cannot, but I hope that I am wrong. Can you imagine losing your only child and not being permitted to have another? How sad for those families.

Rose from Southern Calif   May 16th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

Is the China’s government let these parents to have anymore children? For China don’t let families have more then one child per home.

Megan Dresslar   May 16th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

That good news for China people! I am glad kids got out of rubble building! that is amazing!

Fay, CA   May 16th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

The report from China is just devastating–I can’t even imagine the horror of seeing your child buried under that collapsed school–no one should have to go through anything like this, especially when something could’ve been done to make the buildings stronger.

CaseyJPS - California   May 16th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

I know this isn’t practical, but can we have these really shocking and sad stories at the top of the hour, so we can leave with happier stories at the end of the hour? It’s hard to not let this squash your spirit, honestly. I can’t even explain how I feel when I see this…I guess just numb.

kim-chicago   May 16th, 2008 10:53 pm ET

I agree with you EJ I don’t think there was any evil intent…but it was an extreme case of bad judgement…and a frightening seed to plant!!

Jacqui Chan   May 16th, 2008 10:53 pm ET

it is shameful that they live on or near a fault zone yet the government did not have strict guidelines for buildings, especially the schools!

John from NJ   May 16th, 2008 10:53 pm ET

Huckabee was just guilty of a “say something funny in front of a gun crowd” to quickly. He’s a good guy.

Genevieve M, TX   May 16th, 2008 10:54 pm ET

Boycotting Starbucks for it’s logo? Give me a break. Those people need a time out.

Sahira   May 16th, 2008 10:54 pm ET

Can you imagine how scary that must have been, being trapped beneath that rubble for so long? Then to be rescued and find out your family is gone. It’s heartbreaking.

How many people know someone who was pregnant at the age of 16? or maybe it was you?? Did the police come to your door and arrest your parents because you got pregnant? I am not taking sides, but there are always two sides to every story. It is possible that not all the people in the camps were taking part in child abuse.

Amazing story from China. No words to express all the feelings one has.

Have a good weekend! See you Monday night!

KellyI, SF   May 16th, 2008 10:56 pm ET

Watching the earthquake report out of China breaks your heart. It’s ironic that in California there is always a campaign asking you if you could survive 72 hours without assistance because it might take that long for help to reach you. At least we live in houses, work in buildings and go to schools that don’t fall down on top of us.

Jo Ann, Ohio   May 16th, 2008 10:57 pm ET
