**Watch Joe John’s Keeping Them Honest report tonight at 10pm**

We’re looking into a kind of congressional earmark whodunit. It’s a story about an order for a brand new highway interchange that just sort of appeared in a piece of federal legislation—after the legislation had already passed in a final vote.
The price tag? Ten million dollars.
It was basically a gift to the people of Lee County, Florida. And when they see it, people tend to ask what did we do to deserve this gift? Then they start asking—do we really want this gift?
But another problem is this: No one is sure how the interchange got into the legislation. The guy suspected of putting it there Congressman Don Young of Alaska (not Florida!), one of the masters of earmarking.
Young’s office seemed to take credit a few weeks ago, saying the bill was supposed to include it. But yesterday Young seemed to say he wasn’t involved.
People on the Hill are itching to get an investigation going on this.. But it may turn out that the only way Congress can find out what happened is to get itself investigated.

May 1st, 2008 10:04 pm ET Congress ought to investigate itself and I hope they are embarrassed and ashamed of how much money they waste. Annie Kate |

May 1st, 2008 10:31 pm ET Perhaps he mixed up the Coconut Rd in Florida with the needed road to the airport in Ketchikan, AK. so everone would not have to swim tho ice cold water to catch a plane. Some people keep saying this bridge/road is a road/bridge to nowhere in Alaska. After Katrina they even rebuilt the road./bridge to the casino in New Orleans. After all, gotta keep those gamblers happy. |

May 1st, 2008 10:57 pm ET WHAT??? I just caught the end of the $10,000,000 interchange addition to the Transportation legislation story. What the hell is going on in Washington? Forget the investigations. Lets all just vote the idiots out! Don Young…start packing and looking for a job. Lets also look into haulting all benefits for life for some of these yahoos. These are critical times. If some of the members of Congress have the nerve to actually try to pass something like this off, on the sly, they should be fired without any kind of benefits what so ever. |

May 1st, 2008 11:46 pm ET MOST IN CONGRESS who push for add-ons that cost us taxpayers billion$ in our hard-earned money are democrats. most in congress who want to end earmarks are republicans. so which way are you voting? |

May 1st, 2008 11:54 pm ET I get sick of the national media- that is suppose to be people with intelligence that continue to mis-state the “bridge to nowhere”- as somewhere in the frozen north- with about a minute of research those young people would know - and probably do know- ( but does ot make as good a story ) it is a much needed bridge to the airport in Ketchikan Alaska- if one of those fast paced news folks ended up at the airport- after the last ferry left- would think no where- or better yet- miss their plane due to the ferry leaving without them. Or get stuck due to weather on either side- they would not think it was a “bridge to no where”- an airport is certainly “somewhere”. An Alaskan-non-Ketchikan Resident- that has been stuck- Ruth |

May 1st, 2008 11:58 pm ET I wonder what “gift” Mr Young received for giving Florida such a pretty present. Beware of pork in a barrel, it’s usually bound with strings. Lorie Ann, Buellton, Calif. |

May 2nd, 2008 1:55 am ET A good expose of questionable back room dealings. Although I believe most Washington activity is legitimate and most legislators are honest public servants, the system allows insane spending to continue. Of course these tiny amounts are not the key problem, rather massive social welfare and military budgets in which a million bridge fiascos are buried every year. |

May 2nd, 2008 12:34 pm ET “Ear marks”, “riders”, and other tactics used in Congress to get things enacted which would not otherwise pass are a long and disgusting tradition. If the average American understood about these things, they would see their past and present Congressmen and Presidents in very different light. These tactics need to be banned, pure and simple. |

May 4th, 2008 9:10 am ET THIS 10 MILLION DOLLAR “GIFT” THAT NOBODY NEEDS OR MANTS IS ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF A CONGRESSMAN WHO DOES SOMETHING STUPID AND THEN DENIES OR BLAMES IT ON SOMEONE ELSE. THE SO-CALLED “EARMARKS” PROBLEM IS YET TO BE SOLVED WHERE CONGRESSMEN INSERT MILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF “EARMARKS” (ADDITIONAL MONEY) INTO BILLS ABOUT TO BE PASSED IN CONGRESS FOR THEIR HOME STATE |
