So Where Are Barack’s Prior Tax Returns…double standard?
Posted: 02:06 PM ET

Lanny J. Davis
Editor’s Note: Lanny J. Davis, a Washington attorney, is a supporter of and fundraiser for Senator Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. From 1996 to 1998, he served as Special Counsel to President Bill Clinton. He is the author of “Scandal: How ‘Gotcha’ Politics is Destroying America.”

So after all the huffing and puffing about President and Senator Clinton releasing their 2000-2007 tax returns, she did — meaning all returns for the last 30 years have now been released.  And what happened?  A lot more huffing and puffing about the nine-figure income President Clinton and Mrs. Clinton made in the last eight years, most of it from their books.  And lots of “questions raised” — innuendo there — but no sign of hard evidence of anything wrong or bad.  Surprise.

And then the big omission from every story written or commented on by anti-Clinton journalists and pundits:  The undisputed fact that when President Clinton left office in 2000, after more than 20 years in public office starting with his service as Arkansas Attorney General in 1978, he left the White House with virtually no money in the bank and owing millions of dollars of legal fees. A negative net worth.  Unusual for a politician? Shows he didn’t exploit public office for private gain after all those years?   Funny how so few reporters reported that.  Wonder why.  Sign of bias? Shocking suggestion.

But remember all those headlines and words written about the Clintons’ penchant for “secrecy,” and “non-transparency,” and all the charges made by the Obama campaign on conference calls and by their surrogates on TV (including Jamal Simmons on CNN many times) challenging the Clintons to release their tax returns?

So now…when Senator Obama (so far) has been reported to have “declined to release his 1998-99 tax returns” (or, for that matter, the years before):

Message to the Great Media Machine out there — Hello? Are you there?  Why not ask Senator Obama why he is “declining” (at last as of now) to release his tax returns prior to 2000? Why? Possibly a double standard here?  Possibly?

Message to the Obama Conference Callers and the Obama Talking Points Surrogates — Hello? Are you there?  After demanding “transparency” from the Clintons, any conference calls planned to explain why there is — at least as of now — non-transparency by Senator Obama?  Possibly a double standard here?  Possibly?

Anyone out there who wants to answer these questions honestly — without applying a double standard?

I am patient.  I can wait for answers from Chris Matthews and others who don’t mind beating up on the Clintons, but somehow apply different standards when it comes to Senator Obama.

Hi Lanny, I am the tax accountant for Barrack & Michelle . You can have a copy after Penna, Indiana, North Carolina & Puerto Rico primaries. Please be patient.

I have been blogging almost every day trying to get the double standard noticed in a lot of things, but my blogs hardly make it on. The most frustrating thing about this election is the obvious bias of most media personalities for Obama. We cannot afford to have people with the power of the media at their disposal swaying voters. It is no better than the German propaganda of the late 1930’s and 1940’s under Hitler.

lee from Treasure Island Fl   April 17th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

Larry,
We have not seen ear marks, Clinton Foundations Donor List, and Clinon Library Donor Lists…
Obama’s tax returns from 8 years ago. compare to what the DONOR LIST WILL REVEAL
do not talk about TRANSPARENCY.
The public and the media have been asking for these for years…but have gotten no where. And you squabble over Obama’s Illinois Senate tax returns, and as a civil rights lawyer on the streets of Chicago. As a taxpayer…I am more concerned about what favors are owed to the DONORS who paid thousands or more to the Clintons, from places like China, Dubai, United Arab Emeries, Saudi, Colombia etc… Think about it…

Slater   April 17th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Could we please get this circulated to other media portals; such as U Tube, MSNBC, blogs…this really needs to be known.

You said it in your headline - Obama is pulling a double standard. He is making statements and demands of his running mate for the shock value and the “Clinton” reaction value.

The media can say what it wants. The media can propound that he is ahead in the race. However in the fabric on the ground level of America, he is losing his footing, and McCain, a bigger monster than Clinton, is tripping him all along the way.

Obama has succeeded through his elitist, selfish tactics to hand the presidency to McCain.

dillander   April 17th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

Here we go again. Get your facts straight before you sling mud! Obama released 7 years of tax returns on Mar 26th and released his 2007 tax return on April 15th! What is it with you people. You obviously have nothing to talk about as far as policy is concerned and take to spreading nasty stories like this.

Shame on you.

Tammy   April 17th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

I find it interesting that his returns won’t be available until after the primaries are over. If if smells like a skunk and looks like a skunk…Can anybody say cover-up? I want to know who he owes favors to now as a result of the cash he’s had donated to him in order to run. I think all candidates should cough up donor lists. It’s only fair game.

Yvonne   April 17th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

Hillary is 60 years old. She has 30 years of tax returns. Give Obama a break. He was only 16, 30 years ago. Tax returns from age 38 and up should be enough for any Presidential candidate should be enough. At age 38 Obama was living in an apartment with his wife still paying off student loans. Give me a break.

Jim   April 17th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

Lanny, it is the same standard - I have not heard much from the media about the Clinton’s 2007 filing, and the Paul v Clinton matter has received little attention other than from bloggers.

Just more smoke and mirrors to take people’s minds off the math.

TESA P   April 17th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Lanny here is a question for you.

Your candidate stated that she was deeply hurt when Dr. King was assasinated. However, she wrote a paper while in college that her husband, while he was president sealed, meaning no one was suppose to read the contents of this paper.

LANNY, WHAT WAS IN THIS PAPER THAT SHE DOES NOT WANT OTHERS TO SEE???

sources from the school have stated that in fact Mrs Clinton was strictly against Civil rights, against Dr King and against a number of other issues.

SO MY QUESTON IS THIS: WILL SHE RELEASE THIS PAPER, AND WHY NOT???????????????

Joanne   April 17th, 2008 3:18 pm ET

I am from Pa and there are quite a few who are “bitter”, because Washington isn’t listening to us. Hillary isn’t listening either. She keeps slamming Obama instead of focusing on the issues… She is running for her husband’s sake… another four years of White water…and another Monica story…How can she answer the phone at 3am when she is hung over from crown royal?

AZM   April 17th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Yvonne..
You make a good point I agree… however if that’s all there is too it why not just release them?

And you must admit… going from that apartment and school loans to a 1.6 Million dollar home is pretty good… I’d love to have that financial advisor… wouldn’t you?

Cynthia   April 17th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

Lanny you can bet the Obama’s made less than the Clintons. What would be more interesting is the donor list to the Clinton Library.

Bev Tn of Tonawanda NY   April 17th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

Lanny: Great article as usual. Reading these comments from the Clinton haters - they all manage to find something to crab about, i.e., Tesa P. where on earth did you dig that one up? “Sources” - why don’t you reveal who those sources are? Why don’t they identify themselves????? All you people must stay up late at night to think of things to say against the Clintons. Get a life.

Keith   April 17th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

Lanny,

There was a time when I had the greastest respect for you but your constant support of the most corrupt, lying, mismanaged Clinton campaign has changed that. What exactly do you think you are going to find in the years you are asking about? This is laughable, your canidate has not disclosed the most important year, 2007, it is important for us to know who has and is paying Bill Clinton, what influence do they expect to garner? How many more Colombian conflicts exist? Who did bill pardon? The list goes on.

Lanny, wise up and save your integrity before you are taken down by the SS Clinton.

Cathy   April 17th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

Lanny, give it up! The constant finger pointing is getting old! I believe the Obama’s have released their taxes for the period covering his senatorial years to present, which is all that was probably expected of Sen. Clinton. By the way, are their 2007 returns going to be forthcoming???

JAY   April 17th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

Where are the Clintons 2007?

Sharon Ohio   April 17th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

Obama only demands when he think he can get someone to remove an opponent from the running.

He does not want anyone to have anything on him.

Yes he has a Double Standard, Michelle has her own Standards

Susan   April 17th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

Lanny:

I admire your loyalty to the Clintons. All this is to late. The numbers are against her. The country has to move on and get over all this bickering. We can not solve our problems as a divided country.

AZM…write a Bestseller.

Jan from Wood Dale, IL   April 17th, 2008 5:41 pm ET

Obama may be hesitant to reveal his 1997 - 1999 tax returns because he may have violated the IL Governmental Ethics Act (last changed in 1995) 5 ILCS 420/2-110 Section 2-110 Honoraria (a) which states: No member of the General Assembly shall accept any honorarium. On Obama’s 2000 Schedule C-EZ, he reported that he received $16,500 as a “Foundation Director/Educational Speaker”, and on his 2002 Schedule C, Obama reported receiving $34,491 for “Legal Services/Speaking fees” which were paid in cash. He does not indicate from whom he received this from.

Obama’s income as a lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School is reported separately on his W-2’s, and is allowable as part of his private profession or occupation if unrelated to his legislative duties.

Frances   April 17th, 2008 7:42 pm ET

He hasn’t released him because he doesn’t need to display where millions came from during that time like Billary and McBush!

Annie Kate   April 17th, 2008 8:53 pm ET

Before everyone gets hot under the collar about Clinton’s 2007 tax returns, remember that those returns were only just due this month on the 15th. And if an extension was filed they are due at the end of that extension. Perhaps the reason Clinton didn’t release her 2007 returns is that they aren’t done yet much less filed. Once the returns are done and filed with the IRS I would imagine the Clinton’s will release them too.

The news media is biased toward newsworthy issues as Lanny clearly demonstrates.

The donor lists are newsworthy and Obama’s old tax returns are less so.

Lanny is sounding petulant, illogical, and desperate.

LaKeisha Chestnut   April 17th, 2008 9:18 pm ET

Lanny,
Have you been reading lately? Sen. Obama released his tax returns from 2000 to 2006 on his website. He also released his 2007 tax return. I am sick of all these Clinton surrogates attacking someone because they want Hillary to win so bad. This is why I got into politics 10 years ago, see change happen. Next time when you decide to write something, please get your fact together. I will be posting this article on my blog on the Barack Obama website.

Francis D.   April 17th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Good for you Lanny. I believe that Senator Obama’s tax returns from the past will indicate that Senator Obama received income from unlawful sources. Senator Clinton has been investigated for years. Much money was spent during her husband’s presidency. Nothing was ever found. She released her calendar as first lady. Nothing found. Tax returns. Nothing found. Senator Obama is hiding something which is why there is pressure for Senator Clinton to quit. Lanny, I would like to announce to you, and if CNN will print this, to the world, that I am completely against Senator Obama and will never vote for him. If Senator Clinton is forced to quit and does not run as an independent, I am going to start a write in campaign for her. I hope you Lanny and other Senator Clinton supporters will do the same. Senator Clinton is the only one who is qualified to run against Senator McCain.

Major J.   April 17th, 2008 10:47 pm ET

Good Lanny:

Thank you for making that point. Obama is almost never held to the standard that Senator Clinton is. It’s time for him to measure up.

Question: now that Clinton’s pastor has been convicted of child
molestation, will we see the same furor directed at Hillary that Obama
endured?

Roger, Michigan, US   April 18th, 2008 10:11 am ET

Hey Lanny! Just wanted to let you know I love the book you authored. Ya know, the one called. “Scandal: How ‘Gotcha’ Politics is Destroying America.”

So I guess it’s cool to play “Gotcha” to only the ones you oppose? C’mon, Lanny…stop with your own hypocrisy.

Jessie   April 18th, 2008 11:58 am ET

Mr. Davis, your statement that Clintons left the White House without any money, suggesting their prudency, is pathetic. You yourself mentioned that they have spent their money on legal fees (I guess, you have received part of it as one of their lawyers). But the cost of former president Clinton’s impeachment (because of the obvious sex scandal and legal issues related to it) goes much beyond their money - in my opinion, consequences are seen in the years after that. I have good reason to believe that you, as a lawyer, are a person of high integrity and decency, and I find it difficult to understand why you are trying to engage in the “gotcha” politics out of loyalty to Clintons? There is life after elections - think about it and take care of your professional stature before is too late.

Lanny Davis   April 18th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

I rarely if ever offer a comment to comments to a blog I write. But this is an exception:
Isn’t it amazing that not one critic of what I wrote answered the basic question I asked: Why won’t Obama release his tax returns now? The same qustion he and his campaign were asking Senator Clinton for the last two months?
Isn’t it interesting everyone one of the critical comments ducked my question and changed the subject?
Does that prove my point about a double standard?
Or, perhaps, did the first commenter have it right: There is a cynical double standard, i.e., he will not release his tax returns until after all the primaries are over.
Isn’t this double standard interesting — applied by the most venemous and sanctimonious of the critics when attacking Senator clinton nd yet they don’t recognize it as hypocrisy?

Liz-Ontario   April 18th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Lanny, I don’t know you, but I respect you. I am happy that Senator Clinton has someone like you to stand up for her.
As for the Obama tax returns, it could reveal many things that the American people wouldn’t be happy about. It could reveal donations to organizations that supported terrorists before 2001. Is it true? I don’t know. Is it possible? What we know about Obama today…it is possible.

You go Hillary. America cannot “afford” anyone but you as President at this time. Obama has too much “extremist” baggage. McCain, well we know what the Republicans can do for the country.

Mischelle from Illinois   April 18th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

Mr. Davis,
Thank you and I AGREE! Mr. Obama is very seccretive when it comes to his past. He is NOT an open book like Senator Clinton and there are probalby many, many things that he does not want the public to find out that would be reveealed by releasing ALL of his tax records from prior to 2000. He also would then be forced to ANSWER to the associations that he has had in the past.

I am following the Tony Resko trial here in Illinios, my little town was one of them that was at the center of the hospital board scandal that Levine caused. Resko WAS and IS a sleeze-ball and if Obama had more to do with him than he has admitted to previously, WE NEED to know about it NOW!

He has already admitted to MORE money raised by Resko than he previous stated ,and he did so very reluctantly. A typical politician with a lot to hide. Ps. I don’t like Kool-aid!

Sharon, Seattle   April 18th, 2008 10:53 pm ET

Hi Lanny,

The returns that you’re looking for have been pored over by the Illinois press. I’m sure if you jump started yourself into 2008 you could Google and possibly find them.

Keep moving though, nothing nasty to see there. Quit looking for more trouble where there isn’t any.

xtina, chicago IL   April 18th, 2008 11:18 pm ET

to Taj above: why is Obama’s camp waiting until the three state primaries are done before releasing the remaining tax returns? What’re they hiding?

James   April 19th, 2008 11:00 pm ET

When Hillary Clinton gave her first speach at the beginning of the canpaigning she made no reference to CHANGE. After Barack Obama spoke all of a sudden Hillary was all for change, and copied everything she had heard Obama say. She has lied repeatedly, every state she has campaigned in she has claimed to have lived, worked, gone to school or has family living there. How can we trust her being president and have to question when she speaks if she is telling the truth or telling another lie. Where is the 15,000,000 not accounted for on their tax return. When is the list of contributors for the Clinton Library going to be made public, and the money Bill is being paid for selling his name too middle east companys. All the questions why Obama is not wearing a flag pin on his lapel. Hillary nor John McClain wear one. What about that??????
