Tonight, we start in Eldorado with new details from inside the reclusive polygamist compound. Hundreds of children are in state custody and their mothers say they’re being persecuted for practicing an unpopular religion. We also have new pictures taken by members of the sect that show authorities entering the compound in armored personnel carriers and carrying automatic weapons.

The Pope landed at Andrews Air Force Base this afternoon where he was greeted personally by President Bush. It's the first time ever an American president has traveled out to Andrews to welcome a foreign leader and it's the first papal visit since the sex abuse scandal exploded. Find out what the Pope said about that.

We’ll have an up close look at Sen. Barack Obama and who he is and how he became that person. This is the first in a series of in depth pieces on all three candidates.

Finally, Heisman trophy winner Herschel Walker and his battle with mental illness. The NFL superstar says he doesn't even remember winning the Heisman trophy because he was too busy struggling with a mental disorder. It’s called dissociative identity disorder and Dr. Sanjay Gupta will have all the details.

And be sure to check out our new live web camera from the 360° studio. The shot features a behind the scenes look at the set. We’ll turn the camera on at 945p ET and turn it off at 11p ET. LINK TO THE BLOG CAMERA

We’ll start posting comments to this blog at 10p ET and stop at 11p ET.

good evening everyone. It's nice to be back in New York and back on the blog!

Megan O. Toronto, ON, Canada   April 15th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Hello Anderson, Erica and Bloggers.

Look who is back in the NYC studio....welcome home Anderson!

Looking forward to a great Tuesday show

Rose from Southern Calif   April 15th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Hi, Anderson and bloggers...

Ready to talk about Eldorado, The pope and and Obama plus Mr. Walker not at the same time, of course.

Brian Persaud   April 15th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Great to have you back Coop! Looking forward to the pope segment, this polygamy story is just too depressing.

Rachel from Toronto   April 15th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

welcome back anderson! we've missed you a lot!

Megan O. Toronto, ON, Canada   April 15th, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Was a tank really needed???

carmen   April 15th, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Good evening all.... yeah the pope, at last a politician of a different kind.

EJ - Ohio   April 15th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Anderson is here – the party can start

Minou, New York City   April 15th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

body armor, weapons? that seems excessive to me. were they really expecting those people to have a secret arsenal stashed away somewhere?

Andrea from Canada   April 15th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Hey Anderson! Looking forward to this evening's show!

Terri   April 15th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Hi Anderson, Erica and bloggers

Ara   April 15th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Great to have you back AC! Looking forward to the show tonight

Lilibeth   April 15th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Welcome back to NY, Anderson. Those images in the compound in El Dorado are unreal...

pati mc., camp hill, pa   April 15th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Hi Anderson!

Good to see you back in NY. Love the new tie. ;)

Gary is making me nervous, please assure us that he is safe and is not being constantly harrassed. Poor Gary, and he is like the nicest guy ever!

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   April 15th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

The mothers of these children were victims themselves growing up in the sect. I don't think all the mothers should lose their children. Each case should be reviewed and a witch hunt avoided.

MartaK-Florida   April 15th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

As much as I abhor how these polygamists live and the allegations, I believe these mothers when they say the police lied to them and tricked them when they removed the kids. Police do that to regular people on the outside too.

Sarah, Atlanta, GA   April 15th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Hey Anderson, sounds like a great program tonite. A tank seems a little excessive.

Brian Persaud   April 15th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

They have every right to bring in all that protection in, the authorities would have no idea what exactly the compound could be equipped with. If they are crazy enough to allow children to be raped, they may be crazy enough to challenge the police.

Michael in Lafayette, IN   April 15th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Hundreds of lawyers for the kids, lawyers for the families, lawyers for the state....this is going to be expensive for the state of Texas.

Terri   April 15th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

They were just being prepared...remember Waco

Megan Dresslar   April 15th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Hi Anderson, Erica and bloggers!
Welcome back Anderson ! Missed you!

Lesli   April 15th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Remember – last night that woman Catherine – was concerned about her children seeing guns. She didn't even mention tanks. What gives with the tanks – they must have worried this could turn into another Waco Tx problem.

Rose from Southern Calif   April 15th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Do authorites know who called to say she was being abuse?

Megan O. Toronto, ON, Canada   April 15th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Seem these women seem to be nothing like Kathleen

Anderson I hope you did not catch anything on your plane. I heard a volcano erupted in Columbia.....guess it was upset you left but we needed you back here

Claire in Birmingham, AL   April 15th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Welcome home Anderson!

This whole thing with the ranch is incredibly creepy. It's way too rehearsed between the members, everyone says the same thing almost verbatim. It's just....weird.

EJ - Ohio   April 15th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

They probably welcome the attention of people who are not treating them like property – people who actually want to know how they are thinking and feeling.

I'm glad at least 6 of the women chose not to come back.

Michael   April 15th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Great to see you Anderson.... Looking good as ever!

MartaK-Florida   April 15th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

the women don't HAVE last names in those cults. The reporter said he couldn't get any of them to tell him their last names. That's why none answered. You're not a "person" if you're a female in those cults. You're property....and broodmares.

Zenta, New York, NY   April 15th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Good evening, Anderson!

Alexander   April 15th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Hey there bloggers, and hello there, Erica. How are you doing? I'm looking forward to an interesting program tonight.:)

Lilibeth   April 15th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Those women...I feel sorry for them for they are so brainwashed. The authorities did the right thing in taking the kids away from that compound...they're just trying to protect them.

Brian Persaud   April 15th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

"Its not real common". Is that the defense? Even if thats true, one time is more than enough. I don't see the point in interviewing these wives, they have so many mental issues, its not like they have their own views to share.

pati mc., camp hill, pa   April 15th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

OMG Terri – I was thinking the exact same thing. Somehow I feel this does not bode well.

Lesli   April 15th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Although I understand what David is saying, I cannot understand why there isn't supervised visitation for these children and the family.

AJ from Minneapolis   April 15th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Welcome back AC!! The polygamist women seem so weird and brainwashed..They act like they dont want any help from the government....

Jessica   April 15th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Hey guys! Are you going to do a story on the pope's visit?

Tony   April 15th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Hello Erica from Portugal!
You look gorgeous tonight.
I love the 360 webcam.

carmen   April 15th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

These women are all dressed alike and have the same hair style. I am sure their pain as mothers is real, but their sameness is frightenng.

Krisse, Berkeley, CA   April 15th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

I don't get how something like this exists in the United States.

I am all for religious freedom, but where is the line?

Brandi down the bayou.   April 15th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

I believe the American Psychology Associations guidelines for determining child abuse recommends that the child be removed from both parents when it is a parent who is accused of being the abuser. The children are more likely to give honest responses without the parents present.

Ara   April 15th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

I am against this whole issue – but looking at some of the women, does make feel that there could be a few exceptions to the norm. Some of these Mom's may really care about their kids.

EJ - Ohio   April 15th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

I think the tanks were because they had no idea what to expect (especially with trying to remove 400 kids).

They didn't know if they would be in danger or not... so better safe than sorry I guess.

Rose from Southern Calif   April 15th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

If i heard right the authorites had somebody working inside the compound as a undercover?

Megan Dresslar   April 15th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

I agree with Megan O., Anderson......

Megan O. Toronto, ON, Canada   April 15th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

more then 100 kids......DANG!!!!!!

so I guess it is happening up here in Canada too

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   April 15th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

These woman were probably" married" themselves at 14. They are just feeling society coming down on their lives and are no doubt going to go underground and hide for good.

Brian Persaud   April 15th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Is Ms.Hill taking her vacation now? She's usually the first to comment :)

Betty Ann   April 15th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Thank GOD those children were rescued from the abusive cult.
This is a scary and dangerous situation.

Chuck in Alabama   April 15th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Evening all!!

Jolene   April 15th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

I realize these women sound like they are programmed but I'm sure this whole ordeal is overwhelming to them. I find it interesting that they are putting trust in the media, though.

Claire in Birmingham, AL   April 15th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Them saying "it's not that common" about 16-year-olds marrying only means that it DOES happen.

Ara   April 15th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

There comes the creepy picture of Jeffs! Weirdo!

Kathy, Chicago   April 15th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

I like the tie AC. I'm not so sure they really need weapons for women and children. The courts will be crazy on Thurs.

Sarah, Atlanta, GA   April 15th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

AJ from Minneapolis, I agree with you about the polygamist women seem brainwashed. They are out of it. It's like they don't have emotions and are like robots.

pati mc., camp hill, pa   April 15th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Frogive me folks, but I simply cannot begin to undestand how this is going on in America. This man has 2 dozen wives and over 100 children? Who supoports them all? Do 24 women take care of 100 children? If so how? This is so beyond words to me.

Lilibeth   April 15th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

What I want to know is how do these men support their many wives and children? I just find that unbelievable.

Megan O. Toronto, ON, Canada   April 15th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Brian....Erica is there. she is standing by the big wall......got to love web cam

Megan Dresslar   April 15th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Hi EJ, and bloggers.......
How are you doing?
I am doing great!

Monica   April 15th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Hi Coop!
The other day one blogger asked Erica something about politics, then she said she would never put her name on a ballot. Does reporting about the FLDS give you any feeling toward religion in general? Is it a journalist thing to feel indifferent towards the events covered, especially religion and politics?

Lesli   April 15th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

I cannot understand why any of these women would have elected to leave there children behind. Visitation should be offered and maintained for the good of the children. To me its a type of abuse to put these children in the situation they are in. The mother's should not have been returned.

Were they given a choice of a) go back, or b) go to a shelter – were they offered a chance to see their children?

I agree with the young women, that if there are children who were not being abused – then this separation is a type of abuse.

I understand that this situation has come about because of the abuse but was this the best way this could have been handled.

Jo Ann, Ohio   April 15th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

This compound looks like some bizarre movie set. These women do sound deceptive, as though they are reading from a pre-prepared script. This looks like more than just a different lifestyle choice.

Unfortunately, Jeffs was not the only nutty one.

carmen   April 15th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

My heart breaks for those children who obviously have been subjected to much both with life in the compound and being removed from there.

Sandra   April 15th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Where are the men now in all of this? What happens with these kids?

Yen   April 15th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Lilibeth, I was wondering the same thing.

Brian Persaud   April 15th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Brandi down the bayou.> Thank you! I agree with you completely. I keep hearing sympathy for the mothers, but they are separated for the child's safety. If they were so concerned about their child's safety, they wouldn't let their sons and daughters go through all that.

Didn't someone, perhaps Gergen, mention last night that some authorities were members of the Church?

Bonnie   April 15th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

A man with over 100 children says "I'm not a very good Dad." Wow and to think he may still have more!!

EJ - Ohio   April 15th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

" I realize these women sound like they are programmed but I’m sure this whole ordeal is overwhelming to them. I find it interesting that they are putting trust in the media, though."

I think they tune into tv and cell phones more than they want their "husbands" to know. They know the media is one way to fight a battle.

Michael in Lafayette, IN   April 15th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

What is the difference between polygamy and adultery?

Rory   April 15th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Why do these groups feel the need to marry underage girls?
A grown woman is one thing but these are barely teens.

Sahira   April 15th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

I feel sorry for all the mothers who had their children taken away from them. Their world looks so shady who knows what happens to all the kids there.

EJ - Ohio   April 15th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Hey Megan D. – glad you are doing well!

pati mc., camp hill, pa   April 15th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Hello Erica! So good to see you and Anderson back in the same place. The best team ever! (just saying....) Now we just need some WWTT and The Shot and it will feel like home again.

Tammy   April 15th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Hi everyone. This story just seems more and more like a huge set up every day. The scripting, suddenly using the media for the cause, and the "poor me" victim roles...bleh. I think this is all just a diversion from abuse, breaking the law by engaging in polygamy, and perversion of religion for one's own gain.

Betty Ann   April 15th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Hi Erica!
Very interesting Stats on polygamist!
You are so cool girlfriend!

kristin chicago, il   April 15th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Hey anderson!! happy tuesday!

Andrea from Canada   April 15th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

How can he be a good Dad. I think he would at least have to kow his children's names to be a good Dad, and I highly doubt he does. I wonder how much time he spends with them. Poor kids.

Kim   April 15th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

I guess very young girls are less likely to disagree with their husbands than more mature partners... it's about power and being the boss in a marriage, more a sign of immaturity in the men if you ask me

Erica Hill
CNN
  April 15th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Ooh, we can't escape you with that webcam! :-)
Evening, everyone

elisa, NY   April 15th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

maybe they marry the underage girls b/c they are young and therefore "purer"

Peter   April 15th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

ENOUGH! Poor, pitiful mothers... who allow their children to be raped by old, nasty men. Give me a break. Why even run this side of the story? What do you expect the law to do? Who will come to the aid of these young women? What is going on in the world today? Yes, many questions...but again the Pope is here for a reason.

Terri   April 15th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

pati mc–this totally shocks me too! I can not believe this is so wide spread. It is so wrong. I just can not understand these women but I guess if you're born into it and haven't been exposed to the outside world, but what about the families we've heard about where the children go to public school and some of the "wives" go to work...that I just to not get.

Megan O. Toronto, ON, Canada   April 15th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Anderson you really do love to spin your blackberry.....is it like a nervous habit???

Renee   April 15th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Pati, we are paying for all these kids. It is legalized welfare plus food stamps etc. Plus under federal tax law all of these preachers and prophets have very special tax laws. Basically they pay less than most all of us on the blog! Happy Tax Day!

R.J. in Toronto   April 15th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

The fellow from Bountiful DID make a valid point with the adultery vs polygamy comparison. We must be mindful of other's beliefs, and keep the best interests of the children at the heart of everything that is done.

I've been softening my heart towards the women of Eldorado, because they must be going through such anguish, as are their children.

Betty Ann   April 15th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Hi Anderson!
You are so cool too!
I can't wait to hear about the Pope and the sexual abuse scandal~
I hope he addresses the issue!

Connie B   April 15th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

In looking at the polygomist sects, especially after the comments of one of the wives yesterday about her 'college degree', what education do these children/wives received? If they are getting college degrees, from where, in what? If these people were really educated, would many still be there?

Megan Dresslar   April 15th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Thanks! EJ.......

carmen   April 15th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

why is it that these big men can father dozens of children and keep these women in control and when a raid happens or their children are taken they are nowhere in site?

Michael Svoboda   April 15th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Polygamy is a distasteful way of men using their so-called religion to marry more than one woman. This is just another way that polygamist men have gotten around the laws of only marrying one woman; in other words it's just an excuse to 'cheat' with other women by saying their religion allows it. I'm glad the Texas authorities raided the FLDS ranch and they should also investigate all the others around the country.

Erica Hill

Jo Ann, Ohio   April 15th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Brian Persaud: Gary mentioned that FLDS members worked for local law enforcement.

Minou, New York City   April 15th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Brian P. : why ? because they grew up believing this is the right way to live! it's as simple as that.

AJ from Minneapolis   April 15th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

What the polygamist feel to realize is that no one cares if they practice their religion, the general public is just concearned with the abuse, marriage, and births of the underage girls.....

Melinda from Texas   April 15th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Hi everyone.
I'm from Texas and definitely not a Polygamist...but I lived in San Angelo, TX at the time the ranch in Eldorado was started.

Lesli   April 15th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

Brian P

I am worried for the children being separated from their parents and the effect this will have on them. If some of them were not being abused they have been now – emotionally.

Please remember that these women are a product of this cult and have no authority or identity of their own. They must do as they are told to satisfy the whims of men and they are brainwashed to believe this is an acceptable way to live their lives.

Chuck in Alabama   April 15th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

"Shepherd One" Good one Anderson!!

Steve in Manila   April 15th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

Sad, sad state of affairs for the children. The system thinks the parents have abused them, the parents think the state is abusing them .. poor little kids, they have no idea whats going on but methinks they will be traumatized for years to come.

Richie Amanya, Toronto   April 15th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

the pope deciding the US elections? that's rather sad...why can't the US get over religion?

Bonnie   April 15th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

How come there isn't a religion that is just the opposite. One woman has 10 husbands or should I say "brother husbands"!!!!

Rory   April 15th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

Megan O. Toronto, ON, Canada   April 15th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Erica.....is it so cold that even Anderson is drinking hot water :P

Brandi down the bayou.   April 15th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Why you are welcome Brian! The simple presence of either parent could sway the childs reaction to a question. I actually believe the APA backed that up with some research too, its on their web page.

Also, if these are the beliefs of everyone on the ranch, then all the children are in danger, they may not have been abused yet, but it will come if they are left there. Their society may not fit the "norm" and they may have freedom of religion, but to abuse another human being is inexcusable, no matter what religion.

Rachel from Toronto   April 15th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

i was so surprised to hear that the FDLS came to Canada in the 1940's. And also, none of the men are being interviewed... weird.

Melinda from Texas   April 15th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

I have to say, although I do not agree with the underage marriages or any kind of maltreatment to children in any culture or situation, I can't say that these kids are in any better hands with CPS!

Wes, Victoria, BC   April 15th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Hey Anderson and Erica, who's controlling the webcam??? You're not even in the frame right now! How's about giving all us "bloggers" (such a stupid word) a wave on the webcam (once it's back on you!)??

Kassy   April 15th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Oh wow the FLDS. This is just too sad. I grew up about 30 miles outside of Colorado City, AZ and so I have had quite a few experiences with the ppl of the FLDS faith. They are doing what they have been told to , keep sweet and quite. This is so they don't have further actions taken to them. And the stats just shown. K so the poverty levels are quite off. They WORK the system. The majority have the nicest cars around. Keep up the good work and YEAH that Anderson is back :D

R.J. in Toronto   April 15th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Erica, Toronto has quite a chill going on as well. But the days are clear & nice, so the nights must be clear and cool.

Michael in Lafayette, IN   April 15th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Wow, I thought those people in Texas were strange. Then I saw all those men wearing strange clothes kissing some man's hand. Very odd.

Monica   April 15th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Bonnie,
There is, its called Hollywood!!

Megan Dresslar   April 15th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Hi Erica,
you are so great! Thanks for information FLDS..........

Linda Weekley   April 15th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

I've been watching these interviews with the "mothers" in Texas, and it begs the question: "Where are the fathers?" Putting the women out to spin the public seems even more suspicious when the men seem to be invisible. And, of the women I've seen interviewed, I have seen no tears – even though some have tried to simulate "tearful distress". Yes, their answers are extremely evasive and suspicious, to say the least. I sincerely hope that the state of Texas does the right thing by these children, and I doubt that sending them home will be the "right thing".

carmen   April 15th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

Erica, your getting more hot water for Tea or Hot water bottle?

Kathy, Chicago   April 15th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

This Pope doesn't seem to have the charisma that John Paul had.

Kim   April 15th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

I actually think it's good that the Pope is addressing the issue directly... the church used to always have a tendency to just stay silent on any wrongdoings perpetrated by priests before

Karoline, Los Angeles, CA   April 15th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

I truly agree with those who think the Pope's visit and comments are too little too late regarding all the pedophile priests.

Renee   April 15th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

Erica: When my assistant drinks hot water she calls it "pretend tea." ie: no caffeine It has been pretend tea for 10 years at my office.

Just wondering.....is anyone feeling a Lifetime movie out of this sect set in TX? I feel it coming with Lindsey Wagner as "head mom." Let's have Rocky play the head FBI officer.

The Vatican plans visits to fit their own politics. This trip to America is no exception. Bet on it.

Kimberly, Richmond VA   April 15th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

I disagree with how the FLDS lives, but why are these children being taken away from their mothers and questioned outside of the presence of their parents? Was all of this the result of an anonymous call into the police? I think that there is more to this story and a good Constitutional or Civil Rights attorney needs to represent the mothers and children of FLDS. Their rights are being violated based on an accusation. Anderson, call Barack Obama!

Tom   April 15th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

I think the government of Texas probably was correct. But, I think there method of going in there like tough guys was probably counterproductive and traumatic to the kids. Also, if the kids are eventually taken away and put in foster care that may actually be worse. We treat our pets in this country better than we treat kids in foster care.

It's acutally always cold in studios - need to keep the temp down b/c there is a lot of sensitive equipment in here and the lights get v. hot. Some nights it just feels colder than others...must be because it's Spring. Did you ever notice your office is always colder in the summer and the air is cranked up?

Tasha   April 15th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

About polygamy. Doesn't the Bible say in the New Testament that one man should be joined with one woman, I'm not so sure. If that is true then that would make polygamy adultery and a sin. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Also is AC married, I just noticed his silver hair and realized I haven't heard him talk about kids before.

Karin in Florida   April 15th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Has anyone ever considerd the fact that the "cult members" are all related to each other? The women shown sure look all pretty similar and is no one concerned about incest and the problems it can bring by reproducing within the same extended family?

fiona   April 15th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

i believe the polygamist should allow exposure to the "outside world"and if afterwards their followers are still with them, then they are genuine, not locking them up without a choice,.if they only knew better they will choose otherwise.

Christina, Windber, PA   April 15th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

I don't think the Pope's statement does much to heal the wounds the priests have inflicted. A good first step would be to stop punishing church goers by closing so many churches. Yes money may be short, but it's because they don't excommunicate these priests. They should not be allowed to stay in the priesthood after committing such acts.

melissa   April 15th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Even if a person could condone others for choosing their "right" to polygamy one has to consider the probable "inbreeding" that may be occurring in these sects . With one man having many wives-and those wives having many children. what is the chances that one wife would have a son and a different wife (same husband) would have a daughter and those two end up marrying or consumating?? they would both have the same father???! THIS thought is as disturbing as any of the multiple wives. The chances of inbreeding going on in those communities is higher than in normal society. and its probably happening and has happened. something to think about when people are making their decisions on whether or not this is even healthy for our society or the individuals living in that sect. This can't be healthy for those children to grow up and have a sibling as a possible partner. they only marry or have sex with the people in their own sect. and many many of them share the same fathers....

What are we going to do with all these children? Are they old enough to tell us what it is they want for themselves? I myself could never imagine living like this but how do you help these girls and boys? The law is one thing but the truth of what these children feel and know is something very different. If they are really that closed out of the rest of the world then were do we start?

Sam Reynolds   April 15th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

What I found most interesting in this polygamist case is the acceptance of the women towards the practice. Quite clearly the misogyny is going un noticed in their minds. I especially found the report on Bountiful, BC interesting as in is only a few hours away from my hometown of Kelowna.

Carla Ontario Canada   April 15th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

Where are the young teenage boys. Are young men allowed to marry. This has not be reported.

Susan   April 15th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

Anderson,
I'd like to see a story about how the children are being treated, what legal rights the children have beyond "representation by attorneys", where they are being housed, schooled and emotionally supported.

Second, how about a story about the missing fathers?

Thanks!

J.Perez   April 15th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

The millionaire polygamist's question, "Is polygamy worse than adultery?", was an interesting end to that interview. food for thought. How much damage has been done to families and children because of that? Granted, children (16 and under) being involved in any santified(?) sexual practice just wrong.

Lesli, yes, these women are a product of a cult and have no authority or identity of their own. They are brainwashed to believe that this is acceptable, and that is why it is important that they are separated from their children. They are a risk just as much as the men that have trained them to think that it is acceptable.

I find it interesting that it has taken so long for the authorities to go in and rescue these children–that being said it only took Texas four years and yet Arizona and Utah have done nothing....Good on you Texas. It's not the act of polygamy that concerns me its the abuse of women and children and the rape and forced marriages of young underaged children with old men...After all what's the point in going into countries such as Afghanistan to free women from such enslavement brought on by the Taliban and yet we allow this to happen in First world countries like America and Canada...

These comments that Barack made are old news. I feel like Hillary has taken this election to a teenage school girl's fight on the playground. Katie   April 15th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

Hello all.

Sorry to just jump in, but Brian Persaud, what do you suggest for the children instead? There are SO MANY of them. I know the brainwashing is terrible, but ultimately, ALL parents have a certain amount of control over their children. When they're adults, they'll be able to make their own decision whether or not they WANT to assimilate into society. I know polygamy is illegal, and I do not personally approve of it (at ALL), but taking the children away from everything they know and throwing their lives into chaos? I don't know if it's better.

Then again, in this situation, I can't really see a clear CORRECT direction to take. It's just sad from every angle.

Christine   April 15th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

carol   April 15th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

I can't believe it has taken this long. Abuses in the cult have been known and talked about for over 25 yrs. that I can remember. And yet no one does anything. Not when young girls are given to old men to rape. Not when young boys are expelled from the cult so they don't compete for said young girls. Not when children do not go to school.

In this country it is fine to believe what you want. Even if it is a cult. Have as many children as you want. But it is not your right to abuse. Nor is it a right to abuse the rest of us. By that I mean, these "men" have one legal wife. The rest are "single" and they and their children many many times are on the welfare system. Have as many kids as you want but ... pay for them.

Even LDS familys that are not into polygamy can't support their children, you and I do.

Chuck in Alabama   April 15th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

been a better way to go with the sex abuse charges. The Church would
have been better off admitting it early on, doing something about it
and people would be able to move on and heal.

Lesli   April 15th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

Christine

I beg to differ. Perhaps some of these cases are just made up, but there has been proof that these things have happened. Imagine if only one in ten women come forward after being raped then what percentage of men come forward after being abused as children. I'll be the number is even smaller say one in twenty?

If only half of the cases are real this was still a very big problem, and because it was so hidden it was allowed to continue.

Terri   April 15th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

Anderson, I feel the Catholic church has been treated badly, I would like to know how many preists there have been and the number of abusive one and see what percentage it is...I bet if you were to look into other religions or any profession you would find most have a similar number of abusers.

Max, Dallas, TX   April 15th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

Never heard "I loves my pope" before!
I just like his shoes.
Otherwise, the church disgusts me. They actively work to cover up the damage and abuse inflicted upon children. I remember Thomas Roberts' "Sins of the Father" piece and my view of the church has never been more clear.

Megan Dresslar   April 15th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

Michael,
Anderson is having problem his picture or blog or computer, He will reload tomorrow, I hope.

Hi Anderson, Great to see you back!. Hi Erica you did a great job of doing the show Friday night when Anderson was away, hope they let you do the show on your own more often when Anderson's away, you were much so much better then the fill-in!

erica helped me figure out how to get my picture back. Erica is much more computer savvy than i am.

Kim   April 15th, 2008 10:36 pm ET

What I like about Obama is that he actually knows about dealing with different cultures and living in another country and that his biography reflects what he is speaking about

Steve in Manila   April 15th, 2008 10:36 pm ET

With this old world of ours getting smaller by the day I think Obama's upbringing may make him a very sensitive and aware chief exec. For years I've thought America needs two presidents .. 1 for domestic issues and 1 for foreign affairs .. with Barack maybe 1 will do after all.

Deborah Bolton   April 15th, 2008 10:36 pm ET

I do not agree with a religion that promotes polygamist marriage; however, I fear that a dangerous precedent is being set, when mothers and children can be separated by the state. It seems to me their rights are being violated. What a horrible experience for them. Will they be offered counseling for post traumatic syndrome?
Where is the girl that claimed she was raped and beaten? Remove that young women from her "husband", and leave the children with their mothers, in homes where they are comfortable and loved.

What a travesty of justice! Will Christian parents be next or the Amish? Are homeschoolers going to be persecuted? Where does interference with the family stop?

Kayle   April 15th, 2008 10:36 pm ET

I always found it interesting how much Obama struggled with his racial identity. I am half black but I grew up in a white family and town, but I always felt racialy secure because of my diversity. I guess it really matters on how a person looks at it.

Rose from Southern Calif   April 15th, 2008 10:36 pm ET

Anderson...you don't need a picture to let us know you are here.

Brian Persaud   April 15th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Katie> Oh I agree with you. But like you said, what is the correct way to handle this situation? I don't think there is any good option, its just the better of many evils. But for the time being, during investigations, I really do feel like the children should be separated .

Karoline, Los Angeles, CA   April 15th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Christine, I think it's great that you have a faith and you admire the Pope, but those kids who are now adults really were molested.

People do not put themselves through such public exposure of such a shocking nature unless something real happened. Plus, most of the priests were serial abusers. They didn't just do it once-like textbook pedophiles they went from one victim to another.

I thought those former victims who came forward were some of the bravest people I've ever seen in my life. They took on the whole, giant church, the legal system, and Catholics like you who didn't want to hear it.

Let's hope it's done now and the church has learned its lessons.

Betty Ann   April 15th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Hillary won't come on AC 360?
Why is that Anderson?

Billi   April 15th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Nice report, Anderson.

Are you saying in your report that Senator Obama spent "a few years" as a community organizer? I thought he said he spent many more years than that doing so.

Joe   April 15th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Can anybody tell me why Barack would lie about how his parents met? He said they met at a march in Selma, AL in 1965. He was born in 1961.

Megan O. Toronto, ON, Canada   April 15th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Michael Svoboda   April 15th, 2008 10:39 pm ET

Great story Anderson. I support Obama. I think he has what it takes to bring this nation together; to unite it once again. Bush has definitely divided this nation by beginning a war that has killed over 3,000+ U.S. Troops alone and have caused major problems around the world. The rest of the world practically hates the U.S. for this. Obama brings along diversity with his campaign as well as a strong sense of accomplishment . Not all presidential candidates, I believe, need to have experience. Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.

Susan, Royersford   April 15th, 2008 10:39 pm ET

I am a Social Studies teacher. I have watched the politics of the day with fascination. One vocabulary term students is learning is mudslinging. The same tactics that were used when Adams was running against Jackson. I marvel at how history truly repeats itself.

Jolene   April 15th, 2008 10:39 pm ET

But Anderson, Erica may be more computer savvy than you but you are the "blackberry" guru. Am I right? You do a mean twirl...:)

Brandi down the bayou.   April 15th, 2008 10:39 pm ET

Oh. PLEASE get AC his photo back!! lol We dont want him to have photo envy, it could damage him emotionally for the rest of his life! lol

Brian, again, you are right, the younger the child is, the more recovery made and the easier it is on them. I would rather see them removed now, at the young ages, than when they are older after long term abuse has occurred.

Oh, not sure who this one is for, but all those women have the same thing as everyone else in this world, FREE WILL. They choose to let their children be abused and to accept it.

Libbeatle   April 15th, 2008 10:39 pm ET

I think that Obama represents the cultural diversity that makes up our country. He represents how the future will be and never once have I heard how his campaign has hit financial troubles. That should be a indication on a small scale how he should help manage the country finance-wise.

Jennifer NC   April 15th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

The candidates have started airing commercials here in NC and interestingly Obama's is not completely truthful. Hillary's is though.
Can't wait to see what else they have in store for us over the next several weeks before the primary.

pati mc., camp hill, pa   April 15th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

Anderson, your piece on Obama was terrific. I assume you will do the same for the others and I cannot wait to see them. It's been tfar too long since you have done a report like that. Love it.

Brian Persaud   April 15th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

A man in a hurry to get to that next office......interesting quote.

Anderson, your forgot to mention that Obama ran against Allan Keyes in the Senate election he won. In fact, Keyes jumped in because there was no one else to run against Obama.

elisa, NY   April 15th, 2008 10:44 pm ET

i agree that there is wrong doing in the catholic church, as there is in most large orgs, but not all of them do cover ups and not every priest is a child molester. like every thing else i think people need to be aware of the issue but not blame everyone or give up hope in the whole church

EJ - Ohio   April 15th, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Libbeatle   April 15th, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Erica is definately the blog hero for tonight!!! :-)

Alex   April 15th, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Senator Obama is running for president and the fact that there are so many negatives coming out of closets says a lot about his character. The story of Larry Sinclair in which there are allegations of Senator Obama’s lude and inappropriate behavior seems to be one of those things coming out in the internet. However the media and the press, which have a responsibility to report and inform American citizens of pivotal information that affects our very day life, failed to question a candidate who strives to be one of the most powerful leader for this election.

J.Perez   April 15th, 2008 10:44 pm ET

You'd better figure out how Anderson. Lord knows what Erica might Photoshop to you next time. (lol). You were missed terribly, but I'm glad you took a well deserved vacation in Lindo Colomibia.

AJ from Minneapolis   April 15th, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Heather from Colorado   April 15th, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Anderson,
I agree with Jolene............ she is right, I see you have blackberry than computer.......

Lesli   April 15th, 2008 10:45 pm ET

Anderson

If you think you've taken a lot of flack for being pro Obama before, this piece may just cement it for the Clinton supporters.

I'm glad Obama has done so well for himself, but as his wife said – he has been given much and much is expected. He was given much and he has succeeded because he is smart and personable. He must have had a great grandmother to raise such a great young man.

I still don't feel he is ready. I still feel he is all talk and no experience and this could be costly to the American people. Do Americans really want a baby politician cutting his teeth in the White House because they are tired of the corruption and the status quo?

carmen   April 15th, 2008 10:45 pm ET

He is sooooooooooooooooooooo smart; And can become America's Sexiest President.

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   April 15th, 2008 10:45 pm ET

Billi   April 15th, 2008 10:45 pm ET

He did go silent on the war after he was in the Senate. Anderson, you are providing some very interesting insights into this candidate!

Beth in CT   April 15th, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Nice piece on Barack Obama – haven't seen any photos from his youth.

Regarding the sexual abuse issue – how can you possibly be suspect of anyone who is brave enough to come forward and admit such a thing. What could they have to gain by lying about it? And even if someone would be low enough to feign such a thing, every case has to be taken seriously and addressed or, for the victims, the issue stays hidden like it had for all these years.

Brian Persaud   April 15th, 2008 10:46 pm ET

AC/Erica> So I assume Thursday there will be a segment on Hillary?

Marie_ Palm Springs, CA   April 15th, 2008 10:47 pm ET

And they call him an elitist? AC I’m so happy you’re doing a story on Obama.
So many have misinformation, incorrect information, and obviously the wrong idea about Sen. Obama and where he came from. Obama is certainly not an elitist, but a man who has worked very hard to get where he is today. I cling to hope, that Obama will be our next President.

Kim   April 15th, 2008 10:47 pm ET

Anderson, Erica, do you guys have even a second to yourselves during the show with anchoring, rewriting segments and blogging?

kristin   April 15th, 2008 10:47 pm ET

P.S. Erica so I decided to try this hot water thing... I actually like it, maybe it will help me cut back on my coffee consumption... !

Anderson, how did you decide who was going first – and what nights they would be on?

Jeff   April 15th, 2008 10:48 pm ET

Maureen T   April 15th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Katie   April 15th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

I must be the only one finding it hard to multitask – refreshing this page, and trying to actually interact, at the same time as trying to watch and listen to the show.

Kristin, I don't think you're alone there. I kept leaning towards Clinton, then coming back to Obama...now I'm determined to sit on the fence until it's election time. The Democratic party is exhibiting so much infighting...I'd rather just wait until they sort it out themselves.

Judy   April 15th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Hi Anderson,
I am enjoying your retrospective of Obama and how he got to where he is today. Please, Please no more polygamy!! We have had this for the entire last week and now it continues. Have pity on the viewer who really enjoys politics. I know there is a lull now but please think of something else. That story is just boring.
By the way....looking quite dapper tonite, especially the tie.

Marie_ Palm Springs, CA   April 15th, 2008 10:50 pm ET

AC I find it hard to believe your not good with computers. You have to type a million words a minute! I LOVE THE RADIOHEAD!!! Always a great intro! Who picks the music? 2 THUMBS WAY UP!!! =0)

Going to throw this out (and maybe get slammed in return-who knows?)-isn't it a bit late to put all the facts out about the three candidates after the candidates have done enough damage to each other and various media outlets have done enough damage ripping these three apart so that the American people will never believe anything again about these people without the proverbial grain of salt? I'm at a point where every story has a spin to it when I hear it concerning these candidates. Nothing personal against the reporters, but I just watch some shows where the agendas are pretty obvious. Not so much here but wouldn't this have been better before the blood letting started?

Saera El Paso, TX   April 15th, 2008 10:51 pm ET

Kristin and Katie.....think carefully about who can win against a Republican before you make a final decision about your Democratic choice. Kerry was ahead in the polls at first and you know how that turned out. Nice guys don't always win.

AJ from Minneapolis   April 15th, 2008 10:55 pm ET

E.Bolton

i agree with you..

Jan   April 15th, 2008 10:55 pm ET

I am a little skeptical about what I'm hearing from the sect women – it seems like the women are being pushed to the forefront to speak about this, while the men most likely tell them what to say. I am suspicious the women could be enablers of the abuse.

Just look at what happened in the cult – "children of god" – love, religion, and brainwashed mothers have enabled children to be abused before and this is a situation where the state does need to step in, investigate, and find out what's truly going on behind closed doors at the compound.

EJ - Ohio   April 15th, 2008 10:55 pm ET

"Btw, how do they find out if someone has multiple personality disorder?"

I think one of the symptoms is that the person starts losing time, blacking out – not remembering how they ended up where they are right now.

Anderson,

Hi–welcome back! Your profile of Barack Obama is great. Though someone gave me his first book awhile back, it seems he went from the DNC in 2004 to his candidacy for President without a lot of public–national–exposure. Your segments go beyond what is seen in the ongoing campaign–your report is fascinating.

Jeff   April 15th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Buster rules! 100 and still drinking and running. GO BUSTER!

Christine   April 15th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Anderson – how many do believe are real? I'm sorry but it seemed like every other day people were coming out sorry don't buy it. I always, as a child, ran to the priest who came to my home when I was six to give last rights to my father, never did I feel anything wrong with it. He looked after me like a priest would. Some maybe, but not all the stories are true.

Kim   April 15th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Megan: I noticed that too, you would think since there is a delay, the web cam would stay on longer.

Great documentary on Obama. Its a real story of hope, the fruit of hard work and determination. It made me realize that Hillary's campaign is riding on the coattails of a former President. All her candidacy does is send a message to young women that in order to be President you first need to be a First Lady. Obama is the real deal.

A blogger denying the Catholic Church sexual abuse of children?
