Bernstein: Hillary Clinton: Truth or Consequences

Hillary Clinton has many admirable qualities, but candor and openness and transparency and a commitment to well-established fact have not been notable among them.  The indisputable elements of  her Bosnian adventure affirm (again) the reluctant conclusion I reached in the final chapter of A Woman In Charge, my biography of her published last June:

Hillary Clinton

“Since her Arkansas years [I wrote], Hillary Rodham Clinton has always had a difficult relationship with the truth... [J]udged against the facts, she has often chosen to obfuscate, omit, and avoid.  It is an understatement by now that she has been known to apprehend truths about herself and the events of her life that others do not exactly share. " [italics added]

As I noted:

“Almost always, something holds her back from telling the whole story, as if she doesn’t trust the reader, listener, friend, interviewer, constituent—or perhaps herself—to understand the true significance of events…”

The Bosnian episode is a watershed event, because it indelibly brings to mind so many examples of this tendency– from the White House years and, worse, from Hillary Clinton’s take-no-prisoners presidential campaign. Her record as a public person is replete with “misstatements” and elisions and retracted and redacted and revoked assertions...

When the facts surrounding such characteristic episodes finally get sorted out - usually long after they have been challenged - the  mysteries and contradictions are often dealt with by Hillary Clinton and her apparat in a blizzard of footnotes, addenda, revision, and disingenuous re-explanation: as occurred in regard to the draconian secrecy she imposed on her health-care task force (and its failed efforts in 1993-94); explanations of what could have been dutifully acknowledged, and deserved to be dismissed as a minor conflict of interest - once and for all - in Whitewater; or her recent Michigan-Florida migration from acceptance of the DNC’s refusal to recognize those states’ convention delegations (when it looked like she had the nomination sewn up) to her re-evaluation of  the matter as a grave denial of basic human rights, after she fell impossibly behind in the delegate count.
The latest episode - the sniper fire she so vividly remembered and described in chilling detail to buttress her claims of  foreign policy “experience” - like the peace she didn’t bring to Northern Ireland, recalls another famous instance of faulty recollection during a crucial period in her odyssey. On January 15, 1995, she had just published her book, It Takes a Village, intended to herald a redemptive “come back” after the ravages of health care; Whitewater; the Travel Office firings she had ordered (but denied ordering); the disastrous staffing of the White House by the First Lady, not the President - all among   the egregious errors  that had led  to the election of the Newt Gingrich Congress in 1994.On her book tour, she was asked on National Public Radio about the re-emergence of dormant Whitewater questions that week, when the so-called “missing billing records” had been found. Hillary stated with unequivocal certainty that she had consistently made public all the relevant documents related to Whitewater, including “every document we had,” to the editors of the New York Times before the newspaper’s original Whitewater story ran during Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign.

Even her closest aides - as in the case of the Bosnian episode18 years later - could not imagine what possessed her to say such a thing.  It was simply not true, as her lawyers and the editors of the Times (like CBS in the latest instance) recognized, leading to huge stories about her latest twisting of the facts. “Oh my God, we didn’t,” said Susan Thomasas, Hillary’s great friend, who was left to explain to the White House lawyers exactly how Hillary’s aides had carefully cherry-picked documents accessed for the Times in the presidential campaign.  The White House was forced - once again - to acknowledge the first lady had been ‘mistaken;” her book tour was overwhelmed by the matter, and Times’ columnist  Bill Safire that month coined the memorable characterization of Hillary Clinton as “a congenital liar.”

“Hillary values context; she does see the big picture. Hers, in fact, is not the mind of a conventional politician,”  I wrote in A Woman In Charge. “But when it comes to herself, she sees with something less than candor and lucidity. She sees, like so many others, what she wants to see.”

The book concludes with this paragraph:

“As Hillary has continued to speak from the protective shell of her own making, and packaged herself for the widest possible consumption, she has misrepresented not just facts but often her essential self.  Great politicians have always been marked by the consistency of their core beliefs, their strength of character in advocacy, and the self-knowledge that informs bold leadership. Almost always, Hillary has stood for good things. Yet there is a disconnect between her convictions and her words and actions. This is where Hillary disappoints. But the jury remains out. She still has time to prove her case, to effectuate those things that make her special, not fear them or camouflage them. We would all be the better for it, because what lies within may have the potential to change the world, if only a little.”

The jury - armed with definitive evidence like the CBS tape of  Hillary Clinton’s Bosnian adventure - seems on the verge of returning a negative verdict on her candidacy.

Hillary lied to make herself look better. She claims she mispoke partly due to exhaustion, but CNN showed clips of her telling elements (niper fire, cork screw landing) of the same false story on three seperate occasions in the last few months.

Some don't seem to understand that it isn't a good thing to lie about your expirience when that's your only differentiating campaign tool.

There's no doubt that Hillary hasn't ben 100% clean on other comments (I'm sure Obama hasn't either) too and she dos have a long standing record of exactly that.

Commenting on Rev Wright the same day was an obvious political play. Seemingly play #1 in the Clinton playbook.

The worst part of all of this isn't that she's lieing about her experience, because unless your a Clinton disciple you probably realized that was going on. The worst part is that this lie may have gone unnoticed if it weren't for comedian Sinbad (he was on the same trip) pointing it out.

The truth is Hillary has no meaningful experience, PERIOD. And apparently no integrity. If the media is so pro obama why is it that everyone said Barrack lied when he did not, then turn around and say that Hillary misspoke, when it's obvious she lied. You mean to tell me that you are running for president and it is no big deal to you when you let untruths fly out your mouth on three occasions? Not the kind of qualities I'm looking for in my next president.

Even her explanation of her "minor blip" was hillaryous! It's impossible to speak "millions of words" in a single day – look it up.
    Talk about over-exaggertion.

In the U.S. Military, we call those people "losers" and take care of them appropriately.

I'm going to have a heart attack before she is done! Someone please step in and stop her. I wrote Edwards the day he left the campaign and asked him to step up and help this country. Please contact him and ask him to support Obama. I feel it is the only way we can get her to stop!

Facts seem to be at odds with Hillary Clinton. Unfortunately, her love-hate relationship with facts is taking up so much more of the news cycle than the refreshing truthful campaign of Obama–especially his speech on race. By throwing a stick, Hillary's campaign has effectively distracted the press AGAIN from actually giving us the context behind the news. The "journalists" of today are more interested in the cat-fight aspect between the two camps instead of simply broadcasting the facts. This story needs to be shown much more prominently in order for the American public to see exactly how much of a sham she is.

And one more note: Hillary has said that she would've disassociated herself from Rev. Wright because of the ideas and behaviors he was exhibiting. Why did she not disassociate herself from President Clinton when it was proven that his ideas and behaviors were just as bad? The only answer is that she stuck by him because of her relentless pursuit of power. She is condemning Obama because his pastor had somewhat militant views on black and white relations, yet keeps Bill around (even though his definitions of "sexual contact" and "is" differ from pretty much every person in the country) because she believes that she can ride his coattails all the way to Pennsylvania Avenue.

Therefore, I believe that Obama is the right choice for President. Either him or Al Gore. Or both.

There is a definite credibility problem with someone who cannot remember if they were being shot at. In her effort to make herself bigger than she is..... She exaggerated. Having been a flyer in the military for 26 years, I have unfortunately seen others there are only there for a photo op to portray themselves as a dignitary. With our gullible public watching every move, it is unfortunate that the truth never becomes public. We often believe what we want to see. What a fake!

Hillary is conniving period. Something about her makes me not want to trust her. Obama is straight and I love him for that. In the book Blink, Malcolm Gladwell says that your gut instinct and intuition will allow you to judge a person within the first several seconds. This applies to college professors – the book revealed that a student's first impression about a professor is strongly correlated with how a professor is judged at the end of the semester. Likewise, thumbs down to Hillary, thumbs up to Obama. Ignore the pro-Hillary comments early in this comments column since it's Hillary's PR that is trying to help her save face.

It's interesting how both Hillary and Bill get a "pass" on their actions when the truth comes out. They are both power hungry liars, plain and simple. We don't need them. Let's be done with the whole Clinton / Bush era. It's been one of the most divisive stretches in our history.

MISTRUTHS? MISSTATEMENTS? come on....what is a mistruth? a mistruth is a lie. say what it is media.
The news is washing this story down the drain. Shame. Obama is being raked over the coals for something HE did not say...some one else said. He is not responsible for what someone else says, be it his priest, his Rabi, or his mother!
But what H Clinton said came out of her own mouth and they were LIES. She did not do this once but many time! She also had another incident in Ireland that another reporter mentioned as an embelished story... come on folks!
She is a liar!.HE is a liar and so is she.
She blames the 'mis statements' on her memory and not being perfect..then laughs.ok then...who wants a president whos memory is shot and who has little regard for the truth? How would America ever know the truth about what she does, or does not do?
No...she lies, she embelishes and she must be living in a fantasy world where she is the hero.
And what is with the media? No headlines? no calling it what it is...she lied...why is the media washing this and NOT calling it a lie? I am disgusted but do not ever think, media, that the public did not catch this..they are listening and taking notes!

I saw three clips on Larry King Live last night that showed Hillary Clinton talk about dodging sniper fire at the airport in Bosnia. I also saw the actual footage of her arrival on the airport tarmac in Bosnia. Let me be blunt. Her tale of sniper fire was not a mistake, but a blatant lie. Will Ms Clinton's new campaign slogan be, 'No one died when Hillary lied"?

I cant believe how many people feel that Hillary Clinton is being picked on and singled out...Her entire poilitcal life has been shrouded in lies and deceit and she has been brought into court on a consistent basis over the last 20 years for questioning...

She brought this all on herself...Ask yourselves, "If she was such an honest, upstanding politician, why havent people left her alone?"

    Poor Poor Hillary....

This was a very powerful article! And sadly, it's the truth. All political banter aside, Hillary Clinton is a dangerous invidual whom we shouldn't even be considering being in charge of our country. There is something psychologically wrong with her. I say narcissism, but I'm not one in a position to diagnose. The Democrats so inclined to be afraid to go against her need to find the courage to do so, and all the Democrats need to find a way to end this primary process NOW. Give Barack Obama the nomination so there's time for the party to recover before November. The division she is causing now is not healthy or helpful.

This most recent lie...just think about it. Did she make it up and knowingly lie or did she really make a mistake and thought there was sniper fire? Strange also that no one who traveled with her would have corrected her (her daughter, Sinbad, Sheryl Crowe). Or if they did, why didn't she save face before having the truth force her to fess up? She knowingly lies and only tells the truth when forced to. Very very dangerous woman!

    cynthia,

character and honesty DO matter. We need leaders who have a moral compass and can offer good judgement.

A leader who lies and is so insecure that she must fabricate stories is no leader – she is a farce.

put away the rose colored glasses and see Billary for what she is – an insecure, lying meglo-maniac who will stop at nothing to win the presidency – including trashing the democratic party for her selfish agenda.

I voted for Hillary in the primary, and now regret that I did.

While the Bosnian story may not be critical, in and of itself, when combined with other recent developments, it paints a disturbing picture.

My greatest concern arises from Hillary's "3 a.m. phone call to the commander-in-chief" business. This shows a greater concern for her own skin than with getting her party elected; such a statement is bound to hurt any Democratic presidential candidate and help McCain, and she should have realized as much.

At one time, I thought Hillary would be more electable than Obama. I no longer do. Between her unpleasant personality and her tendency to stretch the truth, she offers serious potential liabilities to the Democrats. Her flip-flop on Iraq and general center-right voting record doesn't help much, either.

No doubt about it, she is a woman of great ability, but that ability would be best utilized in a Cabinet position or some other advisory capacity. Unlike her husband, she is not a people person. . .and boy is that showing now.

I don't care about the Bosnia thing, it just doesn't matter. I don't think she lied, she just saw the incident as a little dangerous. On the other hand, we have Obama who has out-right lied about things, called his grandmother a typical white person(what exactly does that mean?). I find him to be racist. Bernnut is crazy and hates the Clintons so much that he just can't let go. Who cares what he has to say anyway. He thinks because of his past we care about his rantings and that is exactally what they are...rantings. Ignore the fool.

Hillary is clearly a liar. She has lied about her "experience" across the board, and this is well documented, especially now that her White House papers have been released. Anyone still wonder why she stalled their release?

After 8 years of presidential lies from Bush, we do NOT need another LIAR in the White House.

Give me a break! Of course we will find some inaccuracies in her record from what she remembers. This happened a decade ago, WHO CARES. Did it affect foreign policy? NO. Did it affect the Bosnians? NO. I'm certain there are plenty of inaccuracies in Obama's life, but then again where was he and who was he 10 years ago? And now that Hillary is questioning Obama's relationship with his pastor, they say "how can she stoop so low"? At least its current and relavent to his morals and the CURRENT issues at hand.

Many of us, politicians certainly included, embellish certain things. But for a candidate to "remember" running across the tarmac under sniper fire? I don't think there's a remote possibility you'd forget those circumstances if they were true. It's like watching George Bush/Karl Rove/et al insist that black is white all over again. No thank you. I had come around to really respect Hillary, but not anymore. I think we all just got a glimpse of the Real Hillary, and I don't like it one bit.

Annie Kate: Shouldn’t your piece be labeled as an op-ed piece or commentary as well? It seems that everyone has a view that's biased. It took only one sentence to see where you were headed. Deflection is not an answer as well. You rather have a liar, a documented one at that who has made $ from this story than someone who attends church that had a pastor who said things that were controversial. Not the candidate but the Pastor. It is good he has a place of worship though. What church does Hillary go to again? It eludes me as it does her. There's nothing worse than a made up war story and trust me as a Veteran it's a show stopper. What ever happened to being as good as your word. She promised 200K jobs to Buffalo and it's -30K. She said this was based upon Gore being elected as President! In the end as being born and raised upstate I'm not really proud of her representing my state. Hey maybe Hillary is like Obama. I am just fed up with the Love Affair between Obama and the media. Hillary Clinton and her family are the most hated family in America. Why? Some of the things that have come from the Obama campaign and contributors are no better if not worst. You can say the torture they go through when reporting anything negative about that campaign. America has not had a chance to get to kbnow this man. They candy coat if not even ignore stories to help us got to know him and that angers me. I am very suspicious of their motives ,is it a Love Affair or just tryinmg to stick it to the Clinton's. I am tired of the treatment of the Clinton's I was no great fan but watching a family just ripped to pieces by the media , every word that comes out of their mouth is scrutinized word for word when everyone else gets a pass. Let's be real, they are all politicians and they all will do whatever it takes to win. Not just the clintons. The media (MSNBC) should just come out the closet and endorse Obama. It is hilarious I don't think they even realize they are doing it, they just can't help themselves.

Sure it is old news when it comes to Obama and his pastor saying God **** America. But Hillary's tax returns of six years ago to current is not old news. CNN is very partial to Obama and is not fair to Hillary. This article is spectulation and implying Hillary is not telling the truth and there is just no facts to support this. Obama is desperate to try to find something on Hillary and he has not been able to do that. Yet Obama can say he will not disclose his information as like his relationship with TonY RESIN and that is all of that subject. Hillary
has shown pure class during this election WHILE OBAMA HAS BEEN NOTHING LESS THAN DEVIOUS TOWARDS HER. I would never vote for Obama because of his conduct. If Obama does get the nomination, mostly due to CNN's running Hillary's name in the mudd and brainwashing their viewers, I will vote for McCain or just not vote. I support Hillary but if Hillary is not chosen for the nominate, I will not vote for Obama although I have been a democrat for forty-three years. Just like Obama can make insenuations towards Hillary Clinton but when Hillary comes back on one of them, the Obama campaigns says they are disappointed. It is dirty politics as usual. WHAT IS IT WITH CNN ARE THEY JUST NOT WANTING A WOMAN TO BE PRESIDENT? WHY IS CNN DOING EVERYTHING IN THEIR POWER TO MAKE HILLARY LOOK BAD, EVEN ALLOWING ARTICLES LIKE THIS ONE WITH NO TRUTH. WHY WOULD CNN ALLOW JOURNALIST TO DISTORT THE TRUTH LIKE THIS.

The truth is Obama doesn't have anything on Hillary that he can sucessully use and they are so hoping Hillary will says something they can use against her. They dissect all her words, comments, praying to get something. Obama has destoyed his reputation with ppl like Wright, FARRAKIN, Tony RESIN, and being photographed with the Kenyon Ritual outfit, etc. So the Obama compaign wants Hillary to talk person. Hillary has kept to the issues. Whereas Obama has had to explain himself. To be it is a shame that Obama has bought racism into this campaign. Because we had enough problems before this all came up. If a black person wanted to run for President, a qualified black person should have been selected. Not Obama. Obama has issues with his religion, where he was a muslim until 20 years ago where he says he converted to Christian, yet has been attending a church where muslim leaders come to speak and is awarded in his church. And they we have Obama' pastor of 20 yrs cursing America. The pastor Obama said has inspired him. What kind of idiots are voting for this man? When the right black man or woman runs for President, one who loves all ppl and most of all loves "this Country, the UNITED STATES, I will be very open minded to vote for them. But Obama is not that person. It only proves through articles like this one how devious he is. I surely wouldn't want a person as devious as obama and his campaign. Obama is playing unfair and CNN is catering to him. Thumbs down for CNN.

"The only ass you can save is your own." I heard that in Al-Anon a long time ago. It's so appropriate for Hillary and Barack at this point in their campaigns. They both lied to the American people. She beefed up the Bosnia trip. He can't seem to remember when he went to church to hear key sermons. If I have to choose between a person creating a myth to make her foreign policy exploits exciting or a person lying about when he went to church to learn about and experience the God he claims to believe in so much, I'm going with the first one. Lying about your career moves is one thing. Lying about church, your pastor, and your faith to save yourself is a new level of sleeze that even the worst killers in the Mafia know better than to touch. Neither candidate has given a good enough answer as to why they did what they did on these issues as well as the other lies they've been caught in during their political careers. I think telling the truth might just help them save their own asses with those who find very little of what they say remotely believable at this point. What I believe to be most amusing, though, is that the media continues to fuel this fire creating more damage and division among voters when you'd think everyone would be trying to come together to attempt to win in November. I'd love to know when Americans are going to smarten up and see this for the travesty that it is.

    Carl,

Shouldn't your piece be labeled as an op-ed piece or commentary;; your article isn't a presentation of facts but an interpretation of facts by yourself. Some of what you say may be accurate but isn't it time for the press and the commentators to let the voters make up their own mind? Why this pressing need to push HRC out of the election now? There are still primaries to be had and if I were one of the voters in those primaries I would want a choice – not a coronation.

We all at some point or another tell lies. We all see ourselves as we want to be rather than how others see us. Its just human. While I would prefer that everyone stuck with the truth I know that its not going to happen and to be quite truthful I'm far more comfortable with Hilliary's exaggerations and misstatements than I am with OBama attending a church for 20 years where the pastor exhorts the Christian god to damn America. While that may be old news as Anderson said last night – the memory echoes still.

I personally feel that the reporter from Pittsburgh was planted at the press conference to ask Hillary the question about Obama's pastor. It was too well calculated with her reading from her notes, as not to forget anything that would make Obama look bad before the voting takes place in Pennsylvania

First of all the press conference was for Hillary to answer questions concerning her misspoke words on Bosnia. The words were not misspoken, Hillary out right LIED!!! What part don't the news get?
A lie is a lie not matter how you look at it. At least (3) times she told the same story about her experience in Bosnia. As the saying goes,
"a picture is worth a thousand words". Own up, Hillary...you LIED.

The one who is perfect should throw the first stone. Hillary is not perfect. Barack isn't perfect. I'm not perfect. No one is. So when Republicans keep the White House, I know who is at fault. Not Hillary. Not Obama. Not McCain. The Media. If the Media would be unbiased, we would all be happy with either/or candidate. Now, I know that if Hillary loses the nomination, I'm voting Republican. And thank you Media.

Hillary may not be perfect, but neither are you. Her pro's overpower her few cons.

Congratulations on a calm and even summary of a very serious issue. This pattern of behavior is consistent with "magical thinking," and is not only ominous in a leader with ultimate responsibility, but is indicative of a potential DSM (psychiatric) category of thinking disorder.

Ms. Clinton's pastor speaking about Rev Wright this morning:

""The Reverend Jeremiah Wright is an outstanding church leader whom I have heard speak a number of times," Snyder wrote. "He has served for decades as a profound voice for justice and inclusion in our society. To evaluate his dynamic ministry on the basis of two or three sound bites does a grave injustice to Dr. Wright, the members of his congregation, and the African-American church which has been the spiritual refuge of a people that has suffered from discrimination, disadvantage, and violence. Dr. Wright, a member of an integrated denomination, has been an agent of racial reconciliation while proclaiming perceptions and truths uncomfortable for some white people to hear. Those of us who are white Americans would do well to listen carefully to Dr. Wright rather than to use a few of his quotes to polarize."

    Carl,

Currently being involved in a sticky situation at work which could have been avoided with a little transparency and honest mea culpa, your words resonate with me. The last thing I want is another President who sees his or her own reality and is not forthcoming.

On a more personal note, I must say that my daughters accuse me of embelishing history in much the same way that Hillary seems to do. They say, mom, it didn't happen that way. I say, it didn't? I sure could have passed a lie detector test that it did. 🙂 Then again, I am not running for President so I am allowed.

What does it matter that she embellished her trip to Bosnia? It isn't hurting anything! All of them embellish on a lot of things! Why are you all picking on her!? I bet if you searched through Obama's trash you'd find stuff he lied about!

Give it a rest and get back to the real issues PLEASE!!
We do not care about this!! All of your picking through and analyzing this crap to death every night on 360 is taking away from the time that we could be hearing about the real issues that matter! Get over it!!

I was thinking about Hillery's comments about Obama's minister, and I thought it was somewhat ironic that she would bring up this again. What did she say, if it were her choice she would not have him as her minister? Well, lets look at Hillery and Bill. The only reason I see that she stayed with "Cheaten" B. Clinton is that she was power hungery and needed him to get into politics, with her eye on being president. She stayed with him through his cheating, and even continues to support him after his comments interjecting race over the last few months into the primary. On both accounts she needs him, because on her own she has no real experience and would not be a senator today, let alone in the primary. The way I see it, Obama needed his preacher to get into office. I do not know of any other way he would have gotten the support of the community he needed without the ministers backing. I see no difference in Hill and obama, execpt that Obama has some loyalty to his minister, a nd I can respect him for this. Hill and Bill only use people for what they can get out of people, and then get rid of them.
