Soledad O’Brien is in for Anderson tonight. Some of the topics:

- Florida state Democratic leaders said they’ve given up holding a do-over primary. So what next?
- The government is helping bail out Bear Sterns, the investment bank that became the latest casualty in the mortgage crisis.
- John McCain makes a trip to Iraq - his first since becoming the probably Republican nominee.

We’ll start posting comments at 10p ET and stop at 11p ET.

Thank you for subbing tonight, Soledad. It is always great to see you, you are terrific at this.

Lorie Ann, Buellton, California   March 17th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Happy St. Patricks Day. I wonder if not redoing Florida will be a lawsuit waiting to happen?

Missy   March 17th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Soledad, thank you for subbing again tonight. You are the best.

janice   March 17th, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Have a good show Soledad!!

Mari   March 17th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Hey Soledad, where’s Anderson?

McCain in Iraq…what a joke. SO safe that he couldn’t be on the ground until it was COMPLETELY swept of weapons and enemies and couldn’t walk through without a crowd of people around him.

It’s just McSame.

Terri - Canada   March 17th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Happy St. Patty’s day!!

So Florida is off the totals..that was the right thing to do! You can’t let people break the rules and expect to get away with it. You have to respect the rules that are made for you. Floridians got taught that lesson loud and clear.
Guaranteed they won’t break the rules again! Live and learn.

Sebbe   March 17th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Florida should be seated as they voted. Michigan should re-vote. Sit the delegates. Go Hillary!!

Sarah, Atlanta, GA   March 17th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Soledad, great to see you in the anchor chair.

Megan O. Toronto, ON, Canada   March 17th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Wow John King, Michael Ware and Peter Bergen……awesome!!!!!!!!

Megan Dresslar   March 17th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Hello Bloggers!
Happy St. Partick’s Day!
Welcome back Soledad!

Rose, San Bernardino, Ca   March 17th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Happy St. Patrick’s Day all, Everybodys Irish today. Hi Sodedad.

Dwayne - Concerned Citzen   March 17th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Is there anyone from FL on? What do average citizens there think of the FL primary issue?

Michael, NC   March 17th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

yay soledad!!! time for the deadly duo of women. Anderson better watch out or his post will be surrendered.

Jennifer - Michigan   March 17th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Terri-Canada,
Sounds like a Love & Logic strategy. Heavy dose of empathy, and let the consequences do the teaching.

Megan Dresslar   March 17th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Mari,
Anderson is taking night off tonight.

Chuck Alabama   March 17th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Soledad, Just wondering how many of the DNC members in FL are Obama supporters?

Sebbe   March 17th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

I like how Obama celebrated St. Pats by changing his signs for the day to O’Bama. That was cute.

julie   March 17th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Hi Soledad! The Florida primary is a mess! They have to be fair to both candidates!

Mark A, NC   March 17th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

I thought President Clinton was going to be on?

Megan O. Toronto, ON, Canada   March 17th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Toobin, Crowley and Borger as well. And I am sure Erica will be up soon. The gang is all her but Anderson but I love when you’re on Soledad because you really get involved in the blog

Sebbe   March 17th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Candy Crowley. Also another favorite, always happy when she is on. She is truly gifted at giving her analysis without sounding biased against one camp or another.

Rachael   March 17th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

It seems a little shady that Florida is always the state that has problems with its ballots.

Cindy   March 17th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Soledad….Glad to see you back. I love you subbing for Anderson!!

I think Florida did the right thing by deciding not to have a re-vote.

Cynthia, Ga.

Megan Dresslar   March 17th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Michael in NC,
you are funny! LOL I am agree with you…

Gretchen   March 17th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

25 electoral votes for John McCain and we haven’t even had the convention! Well done Howard Dean! Best thing to happen to Republicans since, well I don’t remember when.

Brent   March 17th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

There are 2 things that are bothering me about the coverage of this situation. First, why are the motives of governor Crist for doing this, knowing the consequences, not further being scrutinized? Second, how many people didn’t even bother voting because they knew their vote wouldn’t count.

LL Barra/ Woodstock,NY   March 17th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Hoping for a good show tonite. Florida really can’t win for losing. Those rules for the early primary got in because the Dems were voting for Election Reform and that earlier primary date was buried in the packet. Hard Cheese now. I bet Floridians will be smarting for years over this screw up. First the hanging chad now the chad that never was.

Jennifer - Michigan   March 17th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

I really like Candy, she’s so intelligent. She is good.

Michael, NC   March 17th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Im sure lots of people are upset about the decision by the fla dnc but i am so glad that some headway is being made…theres just no way to make everyone happy. how do some fla voters feel?

Megan O. Toronto, ON, Canada   March 17th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

This may be a stupid question but can’t they take the number of Michigan and Florida delegates away from the 2,024 total if their delegates are not seated?

Sebbe   March 17th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

I agree with Jeffrey Toobin. These are political parties not the “government” as some people think. No court should be involved.

Cindy   March 17th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

I think they should halve the delegates and be done with it.

Cynthia, Ga.

Terri - Canada   March 17th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Jennifer, guaranteed they’ll have a special task force or some kind of board to make sure the rules are followed next time. It’s a very unfortunate way to learn the rules, but they should have read the rulebook before they held their own election and figured they could call their own shots outside of the party guidelines.

Gretchen   March 17th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Megan, they are out. That is the number without FL or MI.

janice   March 17th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Candy - you’re great - my fave reporter on 360 - keep up the great work!!

Chuck Alabama   March 17th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

HA HA.

The “black church” sees this differently. Where’s the “UNITY” in that? Why don’t we all just see this man for what he is? He is a bigot.

Now Obama is going to tell us he slept in church for 20 years. I, for one, am not that gullible.

Brent   March 17th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Hey Candy, its hard to get “this” behind him when you people do nothing but talk about it while there are about 500 more important things to discuss.

Sebbe   March 17th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Right or wrong on Trinity Church (Rev. Wright) this is a nightmare. I don’t know that they can move on from this with certain demographics of this country.

Jennifer - Michigan   March 17th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

I agree, live and learn as you say.

Sheryl, IL   March 17th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Florida didn’t follow the rules, they should not be seated. But if they do seat them there is only one fair way….I’m sure Hillary will agree.
Give each candidate 50 % of the delegates and no super delegates. The super delegates should not be seated, they didn’t follow the rules and should of taken charge of the situation.

That’s the only fair way to do it, since both candidates agreed not to campaign there. However, alot of people didn’t vote because they knew their vote would not count toward the Presidential race.
But they need to get this taken care of sooner rather than later.

Dwayne , CA   March 17th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Halving the delegates would have no effect on the overall count. Don’t count them. The end result is the same. The larger goal here is electing a Democrat. Both camps have to think of the larger prize and come up with a solution (spin, spin) that will make both camp’s supports happy regardless of who wins the nomination.

julie   March 17th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

I am sooo disapointed in CNN’s continuing on this Rev. Wright rant and the race issue. Other news sources have dropped this. Why does CNN continue to focus on this!! Please…move on!

soledad o'brien   March 17th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

so crazed today, i forgot to wear green. my daughter was sooo upset–she forgot to wear green too. high drama.

Mark A, NC   March 17th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Green is NOT Bush’s color!!!

Sebbe   March 17th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Yes there is a lot of more bad news waiting to come out. McCain is an honerable person (well for a republican), but scary to think of his as the next president.

Megan O. Toronto, ON, Canada   March 17th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

So if Florida and Michigan were still in the Democratic nominee would need 2400 or so delegates. The Democrat side is so complicated on so many levels

Rose, San Bernardino, Ca   March 17th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

I think that Senator Obama needs to make up his mind. What kind of country is he going to lead? If he wants someboby like Mr. Wright to advise him.

Jolene   March 17th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Hi Soledad! Why aren’t you wearing green today? Sounds like a good show tonight.

Gretchen   March 17th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

I agree with Julie. Let’s move onto the Weather Underground story. Why drag it out? Just get all of it out of the way now.

Dan   March 17th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Does the media verify the legitimacy of the polls? Especially the polls by CNN. The timing of CNN polls seem suspicious. They always come up with the polls contradicting other polls. All these polls end up supporting Obama. The timing of the polls are questionable as well. CNN does its polls much ahead of the primary, so they can claim the swing by undecided voters. CNN was the only one to put Obama leading in California. They were the first ones to put Obama ahead in Texas as well. Both the states eventually went for Clinton. But these polls do shift the momentum.

Brian Persaud   March 17th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

I agree, Obama really does need to “personalize” his explanation. If he ever wants to get past it he needs to give clear and specific answers. If he doesn’t I think this slip up definitely has the potential to hurt him.

Bob   March 17th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Good job of not even showing the viewers Reverend Wright on video, how safe and biased.
Obama and Dem supporters like CNN may try to wash this over, but look out for the tidal wave.

ender   March 17th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

candy- what do U think of a national primary day for all states. let the politicians campaign in jan and feb, since not much is going on in those months :P … then early March all the states weigh in on the same day . Do U think it would work?

Megan O. Toronto, ON, Canada   March 17th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Soledad just tell your daughter she was being an individual and not following the crowd. That may work :P

Stacy   March 17th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

Soledad, oh, I hope your daughter didn’t get pinched.

Shane, KY   March 17th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

Florida didn’t get a do-over. Wonder if the same can be said about the execs at Bear Stearns?

Gretchen   March 17th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

Soledad–too funny! Sorry for you both…

Liz - Florida   March 17th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

Seat Floirda -If not, I am sitting out in November. Neither candidate campained in Florida so there was no advantage. Mich. should redo because all names were not on the ballot.

soledad o'brien   March 17th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

julie–obama (o’bama) is giving a major speech on race–and i agree with gloria, clearly there’s more to be said and more he wants to say. so i gotta disagree with ya.

ender   March 17th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Oh sorry HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY - everyone’s a little green around the edges today, eh?!

Grammy Barb   March 17th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

How can you disenfranchise the voters of 2 states because of the assinine moves of some top level “leaders” in the Democratic party? Since when does any American feel it’s OK to punish the many for the sins of a few?

Paolo   March 17th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Hi Soledad,

I have a feeling Florida and the Democrats’ relationship will work this way unless either one will lift a finger to solve this: Florida says to the Democrats “you punish us in the primaries, we will punish you in the general election.”

Who agrees?

tommy upton   March 17th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

they campained in florida..we watch you and other national shows and watched the debates. thats bull that they did not campain here.
florida voted and it should count.hillery won. and she should get all the delegets. if she dont and oboma gets the nomation then it will not be a true account of what the country wants.and she will have been robed by oboma. and why did you cut the blog off about oboma ???
what is it with the meida…why dont you want the american people to here the truth about oboma.???
what is going on ???If oboma gets the nomation then McCane has my vote..I just cannot vote for a fake like oboma.

Katie   March 17th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

I can’t say I’m shocked to hear about this wall street bail out, but I’m still outraged and disgusted. I’d love to get a government bailout for taking my company into the ground. Everyone loves to tout the free market until they’re the ones who are on the receiving end of a hand out. What ever happened to the free market being the best solution Bush?

Sophie Jones   March 17th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

The economy is in the toilet, lives and resources continue to be lost in a sensless war and all you can talk about is Obama’s crazy preacher. The MEDIA is helping the Republicans destroy this country!

Liz - Ontario, Canada   March 17th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Have I ever seen Obama with two American flags behind him, or this is the first time?

Dwayne , CA   March 17th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

I am really amazed how willing people blogging and pundits on the show are to attribute so much of one’s persona on those that have advised them. My parents have probably had more impact on me as a person and I don’t agree with nor follow a load of the things they’ve conveyed.

That said, it is possible to receive counsel and to pick and chose what one takes away from the encounter. I haven’t attended this church and agree that the delivery was difficult to hear. However, let’s judge the candidates on their own statements and words.

rob   March 17th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

I’m afraid if they ( the DNC) does not find away to seat the Florida and Michigan delegates, I will be voting for John McCain.

soledad o'brien   March 17th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

when you’re seven you dont want to be an individual. what’s an individual at 7? haha

Pam   March 17th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Please think about the fact that the majoirty of the American people are not interested in anyones pastor or where they go church. Certainly, it is important that Barak Obama insure everyone that what his minister says are not his words or beleifs. Most of us do not follow every word that a minister speaks. Look at Mike Huckabee! What is important is to have a President that cares more for We The People than he does for himself. I think that we all have a right to that decision.

Rose, San Bernardino, Ca   March 17th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Who is going to bail the people out of trouble? Let Bear Sterns bail themself out see how they like losing their family homes ect?

Kay   March 17th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Is anyone familiar with the expression, “agree to disagree”? How many of you on this blog have family and/or friends with whom you have extremely different opinions and ideas ? Will you be cutting any of them out of your life? Give Sen. Obama credit for being able to maintain a relationship with Rev. Wright in the face of extreme differences of opinion. If you look at how the Senator has lived his life as a public servant, bringing people together to achieve common goals, it is obvious that he is his own person. He has no problem following his own mind, while keeping the lines of communication open to those of a different mindset. A quality that could come in handy during foreign relations as Commander In Chief. Here is another expression for you…”keep your enemies close”.

joe Borsuk   March 17th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

i think that you are judged by with whom you associate. voters are smart enough to know the difference between a casual aquaintence, and a close associate.

kev   March 17th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Has anyone did any research on what the minister was talking about ?I’m sure some of it is true but we don’t have to hate each other if it is plus he’s not running for office anyway!

Bob   March 17th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Obama’s 20 year close relationship, still a parishioner, and doing I never heard these many anti-USA, anti-white staements, are beyond belief.
Your guests are trying their best to not give this away. Great spin, that is out of control.

bill ingram   March 17th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

hi soledad how can anybody vote for obama after listening to his mentor of 20 years spewing hate mongering anti- american rants? his explanation is not credible. plus there are new contradictions in his explanation with regard to rezko. is his candidacy imploding?

Andrea in FL   March 17th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Obama’s speech tomorrow will be very important. Up until now I would have easily voted for him in Nov. but now I would have trouble doing that even the idea of McCain winning scaresme to death. Every message board I go to and every face to face convo I have had about this matter as followed the same course… people who previously supported Obama are now at the very LEAST are torn. Most say they now feel he is a racist if this the pastor he follows. Whether it is true or not, Obama has a problem now and a big one. Too bad the media has been so soft on him up til now. It would have been better for this to have been heavily reported much sooner.

Janelle, WY   March 17th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

Come on people! Wright made some bad comments during TWO sermons…it’s not like every sermon was like that. Look at tapes of other sermons, and the live broadcasting on the internet from the church…the church preaches God, love, unity, etc. You can’t tell me that a Reverend, preacher, priest, etc. has never made an offensive comment in other churches? I’m glad Obama is addressing race tomorrow…this whole uproar shows race is clearly still an issue in America.

Megan O. Toronto, ON, Canada   March 17th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

Erica - Love the green. Hope your friends in Atlanta are doing better after the weekend

Paul   March 17th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

No we shouldn’t leave the Obama pastor story - this is about the character of a man we are electing president. I for one don’t want a president associated with a church that preaches hate and lies !
What about the new minister who thinks this is ok ? And Sen. Obama is going to contimue with him and this church ?

Mary in Oklahoma   March 17th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

In the race in Florida, if Senator Obama has been leading in the vote and then these votes and delegates would not count at the convention, ever y equal rights attorney in the country would be marching down to the courthouse to protest, yelling UNFAIR. And one way or another, Senator Obama would get his delegates.

But since Senator Clinton received the votes, they will be ignored and her Florida delegates will not be seated or heard. HOW FAIR IS THAT? It was the Republican Florida Legislators that changed the date.

Chas   March 17th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

Florida no vote? Once again, the Democrats are snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Brendan   March 17th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

Your intro said that the government used out tax dollars to bail out wall street, but what are they doing for you. This implies that tax dollars are being wasted to do this and don’t help average people. You know better. You know that if these banks fail, average Americans will be the most hurt.
I agree that that bailout should not allow the executives to get huge payouts as result though. That is disgraceful.

Sophia   March 17th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

Great show tonight, Soledad.
Did John Edwards ever announce who he was endorsing and to whom his delegates would go?

Dwayne , CA   March 17th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

Agreed Sophie. It feels like backlash for the Sen. Clinton comments earlier about the media giving Sen. Obama a pass in the media.

Dr. Naomi Ramer   March 17th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

Give Hiliary 50% of the delegates in Florida and Barak obama 33%. In otherwords Hiliary got almost 900,000 votes as compared to Barak Obama’s 500,000. There were 2 other candiates on the ballot (17%). She won fair and square. Neither Candidate campaigned. Stop cheating Hiliary!!! Why was John McCain awarded delegates in Florida? Whats good for the Republicans is good for the Democrats.

erica hill   March 17th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

happy st patrick’s day, 360 bloggers! hope you all had a good wkd

Melissa   March 17th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

I personally would love to have primary do-over. The only reason I did not vote in the primary was because I knew the delegates would not be seated. To seat 50 % of the delegates according to the votes that were cast would not be fair to the entire voting population.

Joe VA   March 17th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

We need to know more about Barack and the Trinity Church. He has not been vetted we need to know who he is. Anyone can stand up there and so how great things will be.

I am concerned there are more skeletons in the closet. We need to learn more.

Terri - Canada   March 17th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

That’s hilarious! Then again, heard a story at work where an 8 yr old makes Powerpoint presentations for school. Since when are kids THAT grown up? yikes lol.

Audra C.   March 17th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

CNN, NBC, ABC, CBS -get over Jerimiah Wright!!!!! Go to a Black Church yourself and see first hand; or better stil try being Black just one day in America. Focus on things that matter to most to Americans. Trust me, it’s not about Obama’s minister!!!

You news people are making too much of something that doesn’t matter! You are more racially divisive that Jerimiah could ever be!! You only want ratings and viewers. Stop hating on Barack and get over it for God’s sake and our sakes too!!!!L!!L!J@J@KJ

Julio   March 17th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Cnn, keep playing Wright’s video. Do not give an easy pass agin to Obama. He is been laying all this time. For example, he said that he did not know that Mr.Renzko was involved in any wrongdoing, but the media found out that it was a lie. Also, he said that he never heard about his pastor statements, but it was a lie as well. If someone is running a campaing of hope, well we hope he stops telling lies.

Jennifer - Michigan   March 17th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Hi Erica,
What’s that crazy guy doing in the grocery store? What a NUT!

alex parson   March 17th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Good Evening

I know Senator Obama will be a great President and he will stand and be firm on the controversial comments of his former pastor wright.

I am a ordain minister, but Senator Obama is running for President of the United States and I am sure once again he will stand firm.

Thank you

Alex Parson

Cathy in VT   March 17th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Soledad, good to see you back. Agree, Obama needs to personalize his explanation. You know I am looking forward to seeing what he says tomorrow but at this point I am inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt at this point as Obama’s “own” actions are not consistent with the small blips we’ve seen from Rev. Wright. Happy St Patrick’s Day!!

Chuck Alabama   March 17th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Anyone else remember the 80s S&L debacle? Wasn’t Neil Bush a major player in that fiasco? Where’s he been the last 7 years anyway? Seems the Bush family has a terrible time with their, excuse me, OUR money.

ARM loans never should have been allowed in the first place. People who gambled on those loans lost the bet. I’m sorry for them, but, I don’t think the lenders or the borrowers deserve a bailout.

EJ - Ohio   March 17th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

McGreevy should be ashamed of himself. He only threw that out to get back at Dina. He already caused her enough trouble. His excuse is “she should’ve known I was gay” - gimme a break

He’s just slinging mud now over the divorce

adreen/Canada   March 17th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

As an impartial observer I have to say ENOUGH! Enough describing people as black , white, male, female or any combination of the aforementioned, I would have thought that this many decades after Martin Luther King’s speech “I have a dream” this dream would have been realized.
The american people would be offended by how the news media has fed their own pocket books by playing the race card for ratings. Why is it Senator McCain is NEVER described as the ” white male republican candidate”? The answer is simple it doesn’t boost ratings!
How about we just call them “the senator from illinois and the senator from New york”? Get over it!

Life-long Democrat   March 17th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

I’m a Florida Democrat. Floridians voted in record numbers in a fair election on January 29th. If the Democratic Party refuses to seat all of our delegates in the proportion decided by the voters, I will leave Democratic Party and vote Republican in November. I hope Deomcrats around the country will join me in protest of this unconstitutional, arrogant move by the DNC.

Carlos   March 17th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

I have been following the race issue for a long time. I believe Senator Obama is a decent qualified person to become our next President, I believe that Senator Clinton is also a decent very qualified person to also become our next President what I don’t quite understand is why we do not want to accept that yes in the 21 century in America there are still racial problems, that Hillary has won all the primaries including the ones that do not count in where the majority of voters are Hispanics and that Obama has won the ones where African American are the majority. Why are we so afraid to face what is the real problem…yes race…yes there is polarization…yes we all feel in a way victim of that discrimination. I have a hard time believing that or we talk about the big “white” or should I say “black” elephant in the room and try to be authentic about the issues or as a result if Obama wins the nomination Hispanics that usually have been swingers are going to vote in majority for Senator McCain. I do not think that will be the case with african american that have been authentic democrats and in a certain way are behind their candidate now but eventually will not vote for McCain because of the same racial issues…So wins as a result?

Jason, Riverview, FL   March 17th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

Julie… Its all on Obama’s Judgement… He wants people to trust his JUDGEMENT… Now Rev. Wright is example of HIS Judgement. He only “DUMPED” the Rev. on FRIDAY after this thing blew up in his face on FRIDAY. HE knew Rev. Wright was a controversial figure. It was brought up earlier in the campaign; but he instead “HIS BAD JUDGEMENT” let is what lead him to this mess. The CLINTON Campaign is right to stay out of this mess. By the way anyone noticed how Roland Martin is Defending Obama’s judgements on EVERY issue?

Jayson Texas   March 17th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

I think obama is pretty much done even with the speech tomorrow i think he cant explain 20 years of a close realationship with his religous “mentor” and the fact that he is lying to the american people i knew this was going to happen when people finally got to know the real obama it would be over and as for flordia seat the delegates obma ran a tv ad in flordia i think someone broke the rules michigan should re vote love the show happy st patricks day…

I’m a dem, but I have to say that main stream media has been shameless as far as Obama is concerned, and unfortunately that includes CNN

How will Obama disavow what his minister said when he was the official spiritual advisor to the Obama campaign?

B   March 17th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

I do not see anyone talking about Pastor wright comments about the army Tushegee test of blacks with Syphilis, plutonium, some military with LSD and spraying chemical over major cities with result people became sick. I saw it on documentaries and 60 minutes. Those things are true

All I can say is I don’t envy the next president who will have his/her hands full with the deteriorating economy…

nan   March 17th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

Why does Senator Obama deny that he knew of this Reverand’s commentary and yet at the same time he very clearly already had distanced himself from the Reverand months ago? Why won’t any of the reporters ask Obama this simple question? Why would he have distanced himself if he did NOT know about Wright’s inflammatory, mean rhetoric? There would have been no reason to whatsover–unless he was witness to them. So Obama has been caught in a lie; and more signficantly, I am concerned that this is the kind of person–with these values and beliefs–whom Obama has adopted as his symbolic father and has called his spiritual father. It makes me wonder what both he and Michelereally believe since Obama has bulit his platform on the notion that he supports the opposite of this divisive approach to life and race.

Here’s another thing that I question. Here you have Wright, who can delay his retirement so that, in his lifetime, not only can he get the stand on the dais at Obama’s inauguration and have the first black president be a long-standing member of his congregation. But no–for some reason he decides to retire just around the time that Obama decides to run. Don’t any of the these investigative reporters want to probe this futher? It is clear that this retirement was a joint decision–and that therefore Obama’s claim that he didn’t know of the Reverand’s rhetoric is completely untrue. In his speech tomorrow he will try to spin it as “White people don’t understand this kind of African American social justice conversation” but the real scary issue is that this Reverand, and the principles and values that drive his rhetoric, may possibly be aligned with Obama’s–otherwise for what possible reason would Obama allow this man to influence him and his family?

Janelle, WY   March 17th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

Just seat the Florida delegates, but only give them 1/2 the vote (so really you are seating half).

Brian from Los Angeles   March 17th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

How ironic. of all parties, that the Democratic party has proven again that their vote doesn’t count.

Why did Howard Dean and company have the gal to ask people in Michigan and Florida to go to the polls when their vote would never count? If their vote doesn’t count, why did he allow the primaries to be run at all in those states?

I really feel the Hillary supporters have a lot to be upset about in this election process. Now that we know about Rev. Wright, Rezko, the wishy washy comments Barack made about Nafta and the Iraq war, I bet many in the party are now questioning the quality of candidate that they appear to have chosen, and many are regretting it.

I wonder how many early voters of Barack in the early primaries, would now change their mind and vote for Hillary instead after learning more about Barack’s real background. If just, one hundred delegates choose to change their mind, Hillary would be nominated instead.

Democrats are showing this nation the kind of leadership we will all have to endure if they are elected. Not to mention, what they would do to our pocketbooks with higher taxes.

Jennifer - Michigan   March 17th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

That’s unbelieveable!

Dwayne , CA   March 17th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

Paul, let’s get real. Again, the delivery was “rough” but what are the lies that were said? That Sen. Clinton was not called the N-word (she probably wasn’t), that she’s not from a single parent home. Not wrong on the count either. That she’s probably never been passed by a cab because of her race. That’s probably safe too.

Let’s keep it in perspective. If you step away from the way the message was delivered there are some thought provocative statements.

Jolene   March 17th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

Cedric Richardson, Palo Alto, CA   March 17th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

I’m concerned that no matter what Obama says, the liberal media will not let his attempt to distance himself rest. This is the nature of politics. I do believe that those that were looking for a reason to back off Obama they got one.

Douglas   March 17th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

Solidad, I am a sorry to say this because I had high hopes for Obama but here is what I am hearing and I have been all over the Internet. No matter what Obama says tomorrow the damage is done. I am seeing everywhere I has been people saying 2 things. First, the white people that has already voted wish they had there vote back and if he is the nominee will vote for Mccain. Second, the white voters that have yet to vote are really upset and won’t vote for him in the remaining states. The blogging all over the net is incredible. Blogs that normally get 100 hits are getting 1500 to 2000 hits. That is not good for Obama. Trust me this is huge and it could be a campaign breaker.

White North Americans can only talk about discriminations; people of color live discrimination. We (white North Americans) must keep this in the forefront when analyzing Rev. Wright.

Here is the big issue. Just like an olympic athlete that wins, but is found out later for cheating, Obama’ and the media by hiding his minister until most of the primaries have been contested is similar. Voters in earlier states were not given this fact. This is why Obama will have an immense problem in the general, even if he gets the Dem nomination.

Soledad:
If CNN is going after ratings using the Wright issue,tThis whole Rev. Wright thing can be a teachable moment. Instead of focusing on the words, we need to look at the larger issue at hand. There is a tremendous difference between how the majority culture and the African American culture see history and the world. This is the meta-narrative in this whole situation. the press is being the press, sadly. How this story is being covered and reported is another story within the story. Why not have Cornell West or Michael Eric Dyson as guests to speak to the deeper issues here at hand. thecountry would benefit.

Bern -Mississippi   March 17th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

It sounds like Gloria wants to place too a heavy burden on Obama. He is not responsible for what His pastor says. His pastor is responsible. He cannot “explain” his pastor and should not be asked to. That said, objectively, everything Rev. Wright said is in fact true. Americans, whatever the race or culture, have to confront the past in order to embrace the future. Mindlessly acting offended and outraged when someone like Rev. Wright points out our problems does nothing to move us forward.

Consider the two people closest to Senator Obama.

Pastor Wight and Michelle Obama alike put out a vibe suggesting deep racial anger and they are not terribly good at hiding it.

Isn’t it about time someone with a microphone asked them about this?

How about getting the candidate to state definitively his stance on reparations for slavery, an issue on which Obama has voiced contrdictory views?

–Bill in Tennessee

Laurie   March 17th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

Well Obama’s church sounds more like a political church rather than a faith-based church. I’m a African American female and I have been going to church at least 40 years. I never been under the pastorship of someone who preaches hate and annimosity as Rev. Wright did. When they spoke of racial injustice or black empowerment, they did it from a standpoint of love, as Martin Luther King Jr. did and not with the hate or anger Malcom X.

I personnally would have stopped gong to a church that presented the messages of Obams’s pastor. Because when I go to the church, the focus is on Christ (faith-based) and not political. Social justice comes in because Jesus was for social justice..

And I’m sorry, when you know someone real close for 20 years, you’ve heard this message before…in the pulpit and at the dinner table. Come on, don’t take us for fools.

Katie   March 17th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

Instead of bailing people out by creating more federal jobs, lets use our precious tax dollars to put more money into the pockets of rich, greedy CEOs.

Allison   March 17th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

This information with Rev. Wright needs to cease. People need to be educated on the black church. Many Pastors incorporate social issues into their sermons. We are all indiviuals who think independently of our Pastors. There is information you accept and information you discard. My character has nothing to do with what my Pastor says. Barack Obama is a man of character and people need to stop trying to find information they feel would tarnish just who he is. I guess is hard for some people to conceive that he is a good and honest man.

Lesli   March 17th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

Bear Stearns - what a laugh.

Your balance sheets may not have changed, but what about the people who have been taken advantage of by these lying mortgage brokers.

The middle class will be paying for this mess for years and that middle class will be shrinking because of this mess.

skm   March 17th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

The bailout helps wall-street.. but it concentrates wealth in wealthier hands.. and the poorer have to start over from the bottom. (This was the voice I heard in Mississippi from a friend.)

Mississippi is outraged that the government comes to rescue so quickly in this case, but they are still waiting for government’s assistance on post-Katrina Relief.. I understand their frustration.

I also understand that this bailout was necessary for the sake of the entire USA.

Let’s though get the plea of Mississippi fellow to AC.. I think he may have a kind ear for their plight. (p.s., I am not from MS.. rather just have made a lot of friends there since Katrina.). AC, Thanks.

Rene   March 17th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

I’d like someone to tell me what Senator Clinton has done that makes her “vetted” fr the presidency. Also we keep looking for skeletons in Senator Obama’s closet, but why arent the known skeletons in Senator Clintons closet being addressed? We are holding Senator Obama accountable for things said by his pastor, why arent we holding Senator Clinton accountable for comments made by Geraldine Ferraro her close friend and advisor for over 20 years?

Alison what worried me about the words of Pastor Wright was how the people in the crowd reacted and cheered as he spoke. This didn’t show me a group of free thinking individuals. I would hope that many people would have left when they heard this sermon - yes even black people - because they want to move on past this. I would hope that black people can recognize the discrimination he voiced in his sermon.

Brendan   March 17th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

Both Erica and Soledad should be fired for laughing and making fun of the naked man in the supermarket, who obviously suffers from mental illness, and was very likely in the midst of a psychotic or manic episode. People don’t walk naked into a market and destroy when they are drunk.. Their giggling and jokes about a sick person is ignorant, and very disappointing coming from a major news network. Having had a sister who suffered from schizophrenia before committing suicide at age 31, I am disappointed at CNN’s insensitivity towards those suffering from mental illness. If you want to make jokes about sick people, go work for Saturday Night Live.

Hillary demanded that Barak not only reject, but also denounce, his pastors comments, and he did. I would like to see someone, anyone, demand that Hillary denounce and reject the abuse of presidential pardons, George W. Bush with Scooter Libby, and Bill Clinton with Mark Rich, the latter because it prostituted the judicial process since the pardon was granted even before Mr. Rich even stood trial. What a slap in the face to those of us who like to think that we are a nation of laws not of privilege. Or does Hillary agree with such behavior, and should she not also be expected to reject and denounce the immoral behaviior demonstrated by her husband while he was President, or is she one who condones such behavior, in which case her morals come into question.

Monica   March 17th, 2008 10:36 pm ET

Y’know about this Obama pastor stuff. It’s a bittersweet controversy. Before this whole Pastor Wright media obsession, Obama was fighting a viral email campaign labeling him a Muslim. Now, everyone and their dog knows Obama’s been a member of a Christian church for 20 years, was married there and had his two daughters baptized there.
And I’m surprised that so many interviewers are asking Obama if he would’ve left the church had he heard these sermons. The huge majority of people who attend church know that there is a very social component to church membership. There are friendships with other congregants, volunteer projects, committees, youth groups, family ties. Church membership doesn’t solely depend on what the pastor says from week to week.

Mavis - Stone Mountain, GA   March 17th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Has anyone listened to more than just the 30 second clips that CNN, Fox5News and others continue to show? Probably not. Some of us enjoy basking in the negative and not looking at the entire picture. African-Americans and other cultures have attended churches for years where the pastors preach social and political gospel. However, that does not mean that the congregation always agrees with the way the pastor views a particular subject. Barack Obama is a unique individual and if you think about it, there must be something outstanding about Rev Wright because (according to those who know all) he befriended, mentored and guided Mr. Obama into a god-fearing, unifying, compassionate, trustworthy (not like some others), hope inspiring and awesome man. He’s different and some people in this country still don’t like people that are different from them. As Julie stated earlier…..let’s move on!!

Gretchen   March 17th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Erica–I think the big problem happened when the federal government abdicated responsibility for banking regulation to the States. It led to states making completely unworkable banking policies to attract the industry. States like North Dakota had an easy avenue to finally attract business–make really high maximum interest rates, functionaly deregulate lending and the banks will come be your states biggest employers. Now we have a massive credit crisis. If the Feds had done their jobs years ago, we would have a very different picture today. While sloth doesn’t trump greed as a sin, let’s not pretend it’s innocent either.

Dwayne , CA   March 17th, 2008 10:38 pm ET

You dont see the state of Pennsylvania pushing their election date up because they want to be FIRST! Florida and the DNC need to get a grip and start thinking about the voters and the issues

Darrell Joyce   March 17th, 2008 10:39 pm ET

Governor Spitzer cheating on his wife while in office is no different than Bill Clinton betraying Hillary. Bill made Hillary one of the most disgraced women in the world with his behavior, yet the media choose not to link them to the story of Gov. Spitzer. Former Governor Macgreevy, Hugh Grant, and Charlie Sheen, among others had their names mentioned, but the media carefully left Hillary Clinton out of it. I find that odd.

20 years of sermons, but you take several sound bites? If your child robs a bank, or joins a cult. Does that mean you share his views since they lived under your roof for the time you knew nothing of it? Senator Obama should not, and cannot be held responsible for the words of another man. Many of us have or still work for companies with racist hiring practices. Do we just up and walk off the job with mortgages and other responsibilities once we get a hint of it?

Brent   March 17th, 2008 10:39 pm ET

I noticed neither John Mccain nor John King didn’t mention a few facts about Baghdad as to why the situation is better.
1. The city has been ethnically cleansed
2. There have been security walls put up blocking different groups off from each other.
3. Al sadr’s ceasefire (he’s still anti american and anti occupation)

With all due respect what does Gloria Borger add to a discussion on Iraq and Foreign policy.

Judge Obama by his actions. There is nothing is his history to show he is racist- quite the contrary! Let’s not forget his mother was white, and he was raised by his white grandparents. Obama is in a unique position to see race from two perspectives…

Patricia Robinson   March 17th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

Obama !
Before his time
I ask what kind of heart and blood did God give these men-for them to bring hope to the masses today and back then.
This kind of man only is birthed every now and then, in this life-stepping forward with unconditional courage and might.
I can bring up Moses, Lincoln, J.F.K-trying to show the world there’s another way.
Strong men staring in the face of death-making they’re way, in spite of the mess.
MLking stood up marched and was killed-because he wouldn’t let the naysayer’s brake his will.
Strong men and women rise up when there’s a need-special people God sends to cushion the blow and lead.
Obama is one of those standing tall-even though those who want to hurt him keep his back against the wall.
Obama is trying to show us that black isn’t only about ghetto and crime-remember there’s only a few that served before they’re time.
Obama is trying to show us, life isn’t about fusing and fights-its about pulling together to make things that are wrong right.
He is here to show the other side of the black man-not that others haven’t strengthened up enough to stand.
Its just that some people shine and some don’t -some people lead and some wont.
This is why when the call comes its time to do-because what Obama is doing, is to help me and you.
Putting his life on the line-remember! to many Obama is way before his time.
Obama is stepping out in peace, gleaming with faith and might-trying to bring us together in spite of the under dogs hype.
In spite of the fact that most associate blacks with drugs, filth, and crime-I say Obama, came just in the knick of time.

Another thought. I continue to be amazed when some white folks get all offended because somebody reminds us of this country’s history. We are the only nation to ever use atomic weapons on civilians. Twice. We are a nation who systematically and institutionally openly discriminated for centuries against any person who was not white and male. Our country did sanction slavery and tolerated Jim Crow. This stuff happened folks and the hurt and pain are still there for many of us. Remember, we are not even a full generation removed from segregation. Frankly, Obama represents a chance for all Americans to be honest to ourselves, recognizing the short comings we all have, and move toward a better society. If some folks don’t want to support Obama solely because of Rev. Wright, then I say they deserve what they might end up getting in November.

Why does Gloria sound like she is chairing Barack’s strategy committee? Is CNN on his payroll? Oh, yes, he has a lot of money.
Is he paying for his airtime tomorrow? The fact that he is on the news is OLD news since when.. So, why are you giving him so much airtime?

We dont want to see him anymore. We are SICK OF HIS LIES.

I feel naucious thinking of how much damage he has done to the civil reform in this country. I dont need to see him defend/shed tears/say mia culpa/I forgot/didnt know.. GUILTY! We dont need any more of this. PLEASE STOP GIVING HIM AIRTIME AND BEING PARTY TO HIS SELF-SERVING HOODWINKING BUSINESS.

Why are we being sold this SURGE? We never wanted the SURGE… and I am a US Army Soldier…Active duty. The surge was designed to help the Iraq Gov. Oh thats right…they HAVE NOT done that. How is GEN Petraus going to spin this one to the US people? President Bush got rid of Admiral Fallon, Petraus’s Boss; for being out spoken about our involvement in these countries.

This past weekend CNN reported that the Whitehouse said that Iraq was involved in Al Qaeda prior to war being declared. Now it has been announce that this has been found to be false.

I can’t believe that this whole fiasco which has cost so much money was based on lies and innuendo. Lies and innuendo have cost almost 4,000 US service lives and countless Iraqi lives.

That is the saddest thing I’ve ever heard. If Bush is the Commander in Chief - shouldn’t he step down for perpetrating such a bunch of lies. Isn’t that where the buck stops.

I agree with Michael Ware, you can’t just walk away from this war without consequences. Regardless of whether we should have went to war or not, we cannot just leave the Iraqi people high and dry. BTW, Arwa’s SIU this past weekend was excellent. I enjoyed it.

Thank you Laurie for you insight.

As a Catholic I went to church regularly.
I sat in churches and listened to pastors support birth control, communism and Fascism. I can show you a Catholic church that to this day has a Fresco of Mussolini on a horse in the church.
I have never supported birth control; communism or Fascism does that make me a hypocrite??? I still consider myself a Catholic.

Ticked, Michael Ware is not anti-American. But he is a great reporter.

Michael Ware is always on target. I’m not so sure that the Dem’s can pull out the troops like they are promising.
